I just caught the matinee and it's funny how many of the changes you didn't like that i loved, its great to hear another perspective! I could talk about this for hours too, super fascinating!

I couldn't agree more with you. I just attended the show last night in Toronto, and not surprisingly in the intermission I heard quite a few people talking about their disappointment and others simply left. In the years of attending musicals I have never experience people getting up and leaving the show before the end. Was I disappointed?, YES!, but Ido have to admit the props, the garments, the lighting were impresive!, would i recommend the play?, unfortunately, NO!.

Yeah, I had very high hopes for a stage adaptation. Hopefully one day we’ll see a revamped version of the show fans of the original movie will vibe with more.

As a massive lover of the movie, and someone who dreamed of having Aaron tveit play Christian on Broadway years before it hey played the role, the amount of disappointment I felt when I listened to the cast album and eventually a bootleg video of the show, it’s devastatingly sad how much I hate the stage version. All the song additions were not good and the love story felt non existent, and satine as a character was so bland compared to the movie version. It’s so sad how something could have been so good and ended up being so bad. Rip to come what may reprise 😢

It was VERY hard for me not to turn this into a 2 hour analysis of the production. I hope one day they’ll re-work the show with fans of the movie coming to see it in mind. I never got to see it on broadway but the production has changed slightly for the national tour according to another colleague of mine so it might still be possible we see a revamped version one day. 😕

Ahhh sweet vindication. I felt insane when I saw this with colleagues and no one had any thoughts beyond, well it's a jukebox musical *shrug*

I enjoyed the movie and was looking forward to the stage production, but it is now one of my least favourite shows. The costumes, sets and dancing is great but I agree the music let it down, along with the story. The movie had an original song with Come What May, and the the stage show would have benefited with added original music. The updated jukebox list made the show feel tacky and like a joke. Other inclusions were too recent and well-known, including songs from Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Adele and Lady Gaga. There was even a joke about Bad Romance's 'Gaga ooh la la' which was not needed because it is not a Lady Gaga show. The show dragged on and I could not wait for it to end, same with quite a few of the people around me. Yes Moulin Rouge the Musical won quite a few Tony Awards, but that was also in a year where shows did not open due to Covid 19, so the only other competitors were Tina and Jagged Little Pill, and Aaron Tveit was the lone nominee for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. I hated the show!

@@ryanb4940 I'm pleased you enjoyed the show and were able to identify with its tackiness.
