I saw her live and you can have no idea of the impact she has with the very first note she utters! Totally overwhelming sound the likes of which you simply don't hear. Her presence is equally mesmerizing. It's not so much acting as being. Also even though she was at the end of her career and her body very female, somehow she BECAME Tancredi ( which is what I saw her in ). She was sexy in a manly way.
Operas like "Semiramide" are not really "mainstream opera. This is an opera that was extinct for many, many years. The reason is simple: there are relatively few singers who can successfully sing this music. Whereas most operas have traditional tenors, Rossini wrote some great operas with roles for contraltos who had coloratura techniques. The most outstanding recent example was Marilyn Horne, who specialized in these roles. Such low female voices are very rare to begin with. I saw this opera in Chicago in 1971 (as a teenager) when Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne performed it. It was a never-to-be-forgotten evening which I'll never forget. In fact, I went and saw it again twice because I knew that I'd never hear it's like again.
@@leninvazquez-toledo601 helllll no, Semiramide is suuuuper exciting! Those impossible duets, the quintetwith huge chorus omgggg ARSACE's LAST ARIA!!! Amazing...
Spettacolare ! ! !
For the music of Rossini, the 19th century had the mezzo, Scalchi, and the contralto, Albinoni, while the 20th century had Horne and Podles. Will the 21st century have any of comparable splendor?
@@rodolfolomelig8349 Good point. Her singing straddled both 20th and 21st centuries. Let's see if we have another contralto of this quality in the present century.
In fairness, in this performance she is actually acceptable. It was only later that she became a total disgrace. But still -- the totally disconnected high notes, the crude acting (shaking her head as if that were acting). She may be world famous in Poland, but otherwise ... she's world famous in Poland.
Sublime. Perfetta. Senso dello stile incomparabile. Grandissima Podles!
Stupenda!

Da anni non provavo un simile entusiasmo. Grandiosa.

Adoro questa grandissima cantante. Fantastica, sublime, divina.
Magnífica! Incomparável! Soberba!
Voices like hers are rare. VERY rare!!! She is a force of nature, and using ALL her skills!! Wonderful.
Not nearly rare enough.
😇 What a voice!
Imponente. ¡Cómo me habría gustado oírla en vivo!
Rip great alto

The one and only Ewa. Her singing is a miracle.
Sublime !
Rest in peace, Ms. Podleś 😢

Yeah, it’s hard to cast, but also it’s very boring. I love the opera, but I have to admit, it’s not what one would call conventionally entertaining.

RIP! 😢
A LA MAESTRÍA EN EL CANTO A QUE NOS TIENE ACOSTUMBRADO EWA PODLES, EN ESTA VERSIÓN, SE AGREGA LA LOZANÍA DE UNA VOZ JOVEN Y EXCELENTE.
COLORATURA PERFETTA
Brava! Luv all the recent posts, especially Podles~! Much more of her should be on youtube.
Bravissima

Bravissima.

Does anyone know the rest of the cast and conductor?
I'd also like to know whether a video of the complete performance exists.
If so, please post it.

Ewa Podles sung for 20 years of the twenty first century, longer than she did in the 20th.

I prefer her to Marilyn Horne
@PolishViking it's a matter of personal taste
Podles is too throaty and Horne is too nasal. Listen to Zara Dolukhanova or Ebe Stignani.
Podles` coloraturas have always been a killer unlike her acting skills ;-)
Not the best, but I think she is better than the "mezzo soprano" in the Met production of Semiramide in 2018.
Singers like this is why people hate opera.

@@robertharvey8536 Well I don't go to opera for the acting. Her voice is one in a billion.
Can we hear you do it better??
