Great video! Love that Vermont slate. You know, I don't do it anymore, but my father taught me to sharpen knives by hand-holding an "oil stone". I did that for years. It took me a while to get the "feel" of sharpening when not holding the stone.
Like you, I am a knife guy, and I like to sharpen in hand. I can manage slurry better, my touch is lighter and I have better feel of what’s going on. I can read the stone and edge better. When I am having issues I make myself be more disciplined and use two hands. I just don’t really enjoy honing that way, but I know it’s probably the best coarse to take.
Beautiful pale stone you started with Eric , I love slates, surprisingly good shaves I've had from cheap simple slates. Lovely honing technique 👌. I also stand when honing ,and lubricants definitely help me on slate. Nice early wedge 😊.
Thanks 👍
Slate hones are very underrated, undervalued and unappreciated. They are super easy off of a synthetic progression, and most give a beautiful shave feeling. Glad too see your series cover some great slate options. Take care.
I really enjoy the music and camera angle Eric! Great honing, I’m glad you’re enjoying the 10k arata. I know I’m enjoying my 10k ss2 as well. Only 10k I don’t like anymore are those suehiro that come broken 😂 cheers my friend
I had a Rockstar show up in two pieces, that was my last shapton I purchase. Thanks for watching
@@BigEShaves ah right it was the rockstar! I’m slowly moving from shapton to Naniwa, the only shapton I really like and probably won’t leave is the 5k which works like a workhorse but I’m already looking at a naniwa 3k for bevel setting ish
I was looking at that Vermont a while back on GSG. I like the size and the price is pretty nice too. That Arata looked very nice to hone on.
I got mine in a trade, not sure where I came from exactly but I like it. Nice wide stone. I now w believer in these Arata stones. Can’t see me going back to Shapton or Super Stones, I have really been enjoying them. 10k is about as high as I ever need to go on a synthetic anyhow.
@@BigEShaves I’ve been looking into moving away from my Shapton Pro’s and wanted to find something nicer. Not that Shapton Pro is bad. Been looking at those Rockstar, Arata, and those synthetic Arkansas stones from RHP. I might get a 3K Arata just to see what it’s like compared to the Shapton Pro.
@@Johnny-Five I have been looking at those Prada Synthetic Arks as well. I would imagine I end up with a set at some time. I ordered a 10k Rockstar and it showed up broke in half. While I had it I tried to hone on it a bit and I did not like the feel. I am sure they are great stones, they just not for me.
Where did you get your slate stones? I would like to try out the Vermont green/purple slates.
Thanks for your videos.
I traded for those, so they came from an individual, but you can find them on eBay, Griffith Shave goods lists some periodically. Email me (in my channel description) I can send you some eBay links to trusted sellers.
@@BigEShaves I sent you an email for the links for trusted sellers. Thank you.
Nice honing. Packing peanut…👍
Looks to me like you have been involved with some kind of repetitive manual activity.
It’s been a rough week 🥴.
Hi Eric. Nice 👍 you're saying the feedback is better on this vermont slate than on the la lune. Do you like the edge off of this vermont slate better than the la lune? Have a good rest of your weekend
They are very similar, I have 2 La Lunes. One is a door stop, pretty useless, like honing on glass tile. The other is pretty good, it has range, less glassy, with faint feedback. To be honest, very similar feel to a Yellow Lake.
The Vermont has feedback when honing on slurry it feels nice to hone on. The end result, polish level and shave feel is similar to the La Lune. If I had to choose a top five for slates, the La Lune would be way down the list.
@@BigEShaves Wow such variety. which slates would be up the list?
@@borbelyhaz321 Thuringian and Water Of Ayr are my favorites. I find them very similar when it comes to feel when honing and the resulting shave. But in truth, I like most slates I have tried.
