here's what happened on Gone Girl! Cruise

  • Gone Girl redefined the suspense thriller genre when it was released ten years ago, and would go on to sell over a million copies worldwide. Now in 2022, author Gillian Flynn hosted a Gone Girl! cruise with Avalon Waterways through the Danube River in Europe. Naturally, I tried it so you don't have to.

When I was in college kids used to sneak alcohol on the streets in water bottles. I was a nerd and brought a water bottle to stay hydrated with all the dancing that I planned to do. I accidentally looked like I fit in with the “cool kids” while hanging out in front of the frat houses.
Even now that I am older I got through dry spells. Sprite/ sparkling water in a small glass look like a vodka tonic.
I almost always bring San Pellegrino to my friends events. The non drinkers get to have more options and the people drinking get to use it for mixed drinks.

Just ordering club soda (maybe with some sort of fruit slice if you need it) works too. I had a friend in college who would do this all the time because she wasn't a good drinker/didn't enjoy drinking and wanted to avoid guys coming up to her asking if they could buy a drink because they saw she didn't have one.

I had to stop drinking because of potential med interactions, and I just drink coke, and tell people it's a rum and coke. This is only if I'm around people I don't know well and they're being assholes though, my actual friends are really good about it thankfully.

I noticed a few years ago musicians and minor celebrities started doing these cruise things, so it makes me realize now that it's a concerted effort by the cruise industry to try to bring younger people on board. It's really quite brilliant as I would never have thought to even consider a cruise but hearing of one tied to a somebody I'm a fan of suddenly makes it an option if it weren't for that price.

I used to work in this field. There are whole travel agencies that just book various degrees of famous or at least famous folks to lead thermed tours. Generally *The Star" and maybe their plus attend completely for free with airfare. They may also get a small fee or bonuses for filling up the tour.
This gets interesting because some companies plan a tour with the star, set up an itinerary specific to the theme and usually set up some sort of structured activity on the boat or hotel where you taking a class, workshop, open mic or even a themed dinner and a show with a chat afterwards that matches the trip theme. There are clear times about when you can interact and when they may need some space. You may also have additional guest come in and present adjacent topics.
There are also companies where their trip and itinerary is always the same for whatever country or region they are in. Same stops, hotels, meals etc. all cookie cutter then they just have the star show up and they stick a label on it.. You are literally just going on a cruise or tour with that person and depending on how social they are you may see alot of them and chat or the star may be shy or even cranky and that's that. These companies don't tend to tell their stars anymore then they tell passengers. The second kind tend to be pretty frustrating to both the star and the guest.

Girl, I was in Vienna and visited this church and there was a tour, i thought "nice! Let's do this!" And before I know it, we're going down to a cellar and looking at some very dead people in open caskets from the 18th century. The guide was so cheerful, like "it's really dry so they are mummified!!!11!!!" It was completely unexpected and was not advertised like this at all.... So it might be an Austria thing

So people here are used to it and expect it will happen. But it is quite hard when you have a specific trigger since they don't tell you what the story/tour is going to be about and you get triggered.

i love that every time i hear about a solo cruiser's experience on a river boat it's that they are temporarily being adopted by worried elderly couples. i think a river cruise would be nice cos i love old people and it seems a lot less daunting than a giant boat in the middle of the ocean with a ton of screaming children.
i do wish that they'd try and cater a bit to solo cruisers. there are so many of us who want to go on these things, but can't afford to basically pay for two tickets plus air fare just for ourselves. i don't think just advertising to a younger crowd is enough, i think they need to be marketing towards people who LIKE traveling alone or who don't have people to travel with but still want these really unique experiences. i think they'd be pleasantly surprised by how many of us there are.

River Cruiuses are marketed to the elderly in the US. It makes sense due to the price but I was surprised to see my 62y/o father and I were the youngest on the boat by far. Majority of the cruise was 75-80+ which makes sense due to the price. I've heard there are budget river cruises that are more popular with younger European adults but the airfare definitely makes it inaccessible for most Americans. I LOVED my Danube cruise but you have to enjoy a slower paced vacay. I wish more people knew about it in the US they're fantastic!

In Austria Danube cruises are mostly targeted at elderly people as well. For younger people there are usually sort of party boats with drinking and partying, but tbh I don’t know anyone my age and from my social circle who actually went on one of those ever 😅 (I’m in my mid 20s now)

I like that you brought up the issues with marketing and social media recently. I’m in a few smaller video game fandoms and it’s definitely much easier to maintain hype for a title when the developers or merch companies are actively sharing info about merch drops or new developments and events relating to the games. People really like having something concrete they can link other people to, or having an official post to share around because they don’t have to do the work themselves. It’s also why I think companies doing influencer marketing need to pay the influencers for their work, normal customers aren’t going to put in the effort needed to get your product seen because its *hard.*

I would definitely go on a Fashion History cruise if it was hosted by Bernadette Banner, Cathy Hay, and the like. If the cruise line could get special access to museums where you can get an up close look at some old clothes, I’d love that. If there were daytime workshops on historical sewing and If the last night of the cruise was a dress up ball, I’d be all over that. Millennials, they say, love experiences and niche hobbies. I’d say start booking drag queens but that might alienate their older audience.

Amanda, I so agree! These cruise lines need better marketing if they are trying to reach younger audiences, specifically "book-talk" girlies or readers in general. I am going to Egypt in Feb and looked into the Nile River cruises and I thought doing the Agatha Christie, "Death on the Nile" river cruise would be fun but.... they seriously over priced that cruise in comparison to the other non-movie themed ships. And just like you said, the iterneary is no different than the other standard river cruise ships so its like... why charge six times as much? Nobody is who does their research is going to book that cruise.

As a German I was honestly pretty surprised to hear that you travelled that far for a cruise, because yeah, even over here these are considered an old people activity. And nobody suspects to see an American there. I would know because my parents, after my dad retired, went on one and right now I'm wondering if they basically took the same route as you did, just without the "theme cruise" thing going on.
Regarding your suggestion with branching out to romance themed cruises I totally agree. They could even target family saga/romance book fans quite nicely, at least here in Germany because "family saga/romance in X big European city" is a big thing in YA so the marketing potential is there. They'd just have to give unaffiliated passangers the option to, well, not get dragged into it if they don't want to. Or they really do make it into an exclusive cruise.

The real issue is we can’t really do a river cruise thing in our own country. Like what… a Mississippi River cruise? 😂 I mean I guess you could visit various states but um that’s not quite a European river tour. So yeah, if we want to tour many countries we have to go abroad! Even Mexico can be a several hour plane ride depending on the state you’re in. Same for Canada. Either way we have to fly for ages so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Another reason for the low attendance was the long European drought and the problem of low river levels which seriously affected commercial traffic. Girl I went on a cruise when I was 22 with my same aged friend and her family, we were the youngest adults on the ship and you would’ve thought we were famous! It’s crazy! You’re like a novelty being a 20 something cruiser lol
Truly though cruise couples are literally the happiest people I’ve ever met. There was an older man and his wife, obviously retired, that did 2-3 cruises a year for the past few years since they’d retired and they were the sweetest people alive, at one point we went through a hurricane that made literally the whole boat motion sick, all but me and my friend and like 3 other people, and the next day when I saw this couple the man was joking about how that was the worst weather and boat turbulence they’d ever been through and the husband looks at his wife and goes “darlin if we had to go, heading to paradise with you would be just about the best way I could think of going” and she was playing coy like response was “Mr. Jerald you’re such a ham”
Literally the cutest happiest couple ever… some people just have good relationships!!!! I’m glad you enjoyed that part as much as I did when I went on one

Just wanted to very gently mention that it's important to Ukrainians that Westerners use 'Ukraine' rather than 'The Ukraine'. 'The' in English is used for territory that is not politically defined, and given that Ukraine is a sovereign country with defined borders, we leave out the 'the'. Okay #1 I was also 'adopted' during a trip once when I went to a meet-and-greet for some of my favorite musicians and a family who went to almost all their shows figured out I was there solo. 10/10 made the experience a better one.
#2 You're actually right about the red flag by not participating in the group, at least from a tourist/visitor perspective. One of my relatives stayed in a Vegas casino while researching a culinary education program running there. They don't drink/gamble/smoke, so they did a little shopping and avoided the actual casino floor unless they had to walk through it. One evening, they were checking out the aquarium area, and a security guard started pulling them (metaphorically) to see different animals there. It felt like he was stalling for time. When my relative finally got back to their hotel room, there were clear signs the room had been rifled through to check for anything suspicious.

This is fascinating. I have never heard of this river cruise line (yet get inundated by Viking cruise’s media all the time). They definitely need to partner with some booktok creators for some of these cruises. It would be cool if they did some other niche cruises… something like partnering with critical role and have a bit of a LARP event or have the cast play a live one shot. Heck I would go on a “magical” cruise inspired by Harry Potter but notably lacking J.K. Rowling. Maybe have one of the former cast members be the draw… or just let the experience be a draw. I know Twilight isn’t as popular as it once was, but a twilight inspired cruise in Italy would make a lot of sense. Have one the dinners in medieval castle that is “home to vampires”. There are so many options.

When I saw the title I immediately thought 1) of course Amanda decided to commit to a European cruise for the content and 2) it would be more of a murder mystery cruise, especially given the importance of the clues in gone girl. Instead it was like, well Gillian’s coming on holiday and I guess she’ll also do some of the average book tour stop activities, but on a boat.
Interesting. It feels like it definitely has potential but if you’re going to the effort of having a draw card - maybe make more of the cruise based around that instead of just - surprise she’s here I guess

I always viewed river cruising as a rather good value for money vacation. Checking randomly with one of the river cruise companies geared towards a mostly German clientele, I can find a river cruise with a similar itinerary (minus the storytelling aspect, of course) from € 599.00 per person, depending on when one wants to go. Without airfare, of course, and I expect this to go up with the way inflation and everything else is going at the moment.

It mostly seemed like an easy way for people with mobility issues to see multiple countries and cities, but as a 21 year old, I was bored, and it wasn't my favorite European vacation. In my opinion, if you're in your 20s/30s, you're better off staying in a good hostel. They're super cheap and have all sorts of tours included. "Do people knows you are here", pretty creepy at the same time kind words to ask to stranger on cruise.

I love all the themed experiences you go to so we don’t have to. These are some of my favorite videos because I’m always curious about these things but never want to waste my own money.

John green will be so pleased that someone went on a weirdly specific themed cruise.

I know exactly which murderer they talked about. He stayed at the infamous Cecil Hotel which is a whole story in and of itself. That would definitely be something to have thrust upon you unexpectedly😬

"Welcome to the cruise; we're going to have to watch out for decapitations..." That's an oddly fitting introduction for the theme.

Thanks Swell! Can you also do the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise? It's a cruise with old metal bands who do concerts on the ship, and it's also mostly old people 🙃

OLD? Yes you get older bands like Saxon. But So many new bands play as well. Striker the agonist unless the archers etc. I’ve always wanted to go

@@madeline3868 I saw a recording of Candlemass's set on the cruise. I'd love to see them someday, but the band looked like they were about to fall asleep

@@winterburden given the amount of booze consumed on that ship I imagine they were hungover. Not a candlemas fan myself but I wouldn’t base my perceptions of other bands on cruise off them

When you mentioned scanning the cards to see who's on and off the ships and nobody gets left behind my mind went "to make sure nobody is gone girl."
I've heard of this Cruise company they used to do TV ads when I was a kid.
