Third year dental student here doing my first Class V tomorrow and this video helped a lot. I love how short and straightforward it is! I look forward to watching your future videos :)
I love these videos - i love that you share your tips and tricks. In the long run, if you dont mind creating a video OR even just a comment below this lol would be greatly appreciated. I love this community of dentists who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise! 1. Restorability- when to work on a tooth or to take it out 2. Cavity prep - how to detect the type of carious dentin, design 3. Your technique of using restorative materials (composite, glass ionomer..) keep em coming!
Great suggestions! Believe it or not, for interproximals, I still do a lot of "ideal" type preps like you learn in school, even with composite. I use a lot of caries indicator stain too. The one I use is called snoop, but there are other brands. Restorability is such a tough question sometimes!! That's really a great idea for a video.
Just saw a great video clip from Dr. Lane Ochi. If you don’t know who he is, definitely look him up! He mentioned how the cervical of the shade guide teeth is lower in value and higher in chroma, and even recommended cutting that part off of the shade tabs. I have never cut it off, but over the years have learned to ignore it and focus on the main body/incisal edge of the tooth when matching shade. Never thought about cutting it off!
I'm a dental technician in Dallas Texas thanks for your video I love making teeth with lots of characterisation but now in days all people want are bleach shades, Saludos.
Great video Doc! I actually practice this same technique when using the vita classic shade guide. I've even messed with taking a B/W picture of the possible shade tabs and compare this with a B/W photo of the tooth being restored. There are a lot of potential factors with this, such as operatory lighting, but it works for me as a quick back up to help support my selection.
Generally, if you need to change the shade of a porcelain restoration, you would have to send it back to the lab. A lot of good lab technicians will actually see the patient at the lab for a custom shade match. Usually, that is not necessary, but for something difficuly like matching a single front tooth, it can make a huge difference
I am getting veneers and I have bright whites with blue eyes porcelain color skin. Every one says not to do a bleach shade but my original teeth are white and I'm bleaching my lowers.. could I get away with bl2 but it looks grey to me which scares me. Not sure where to go with this..
One thing I have learned is that patients will never "learn to love" anything they don't like on day one. If you don't feel great about the shade, I would definitely talk to your dentist. You may be able to try the BL shade in temporaries. If you are bleaching the lowers it might be better to bleach first, then choose your shade for the uppers. You can usually get away with the uppers being a little bit lighter than the lowers, but you will probably be disappointed if your lowers end up lighter than your uppers. Honestly, I would discuss your concerns with your dentist and not move forward with anything until you are on the same page. And it is not a popular thing to say, but I never feel bad if a patient wants to get a second opinion. Some dentists do a lot of cosmetic work and are very skilled at it. Other dentists do not do as much cosmetic dentistry. Personally, I do not do a lot of cosmetic dentistry even though I have had some training in it. I think I use a BL maybe once a year. Good luck!
I believe 1M1 is still considered a natural shade, but it is lighter than B1. I would say whatever you decide, make sure you are 100% with the veneers at try in before the dentists cements them - believe it or not, replacing veneers (because someone doesn't like the shape or shade) is WAY more work than prepping the teeth for veneers in the first place, and it is much more harder on the teeth. Good luck!!
I am C1 and getting a three part bridge on one pre molar and two molars. He said if I’m whitening I should do it beforehand but that would mean I’d need to whiten forever . I wanted to get my natural of C1 and have the premolar B1 so if I decide to whiten later it would be ok. When I was looking at them they looked so similar!! Is it a big jump? You can see my premolar when I smile prominently. If B1 is not an option what is the next lighter option if the rest of my natural teeth are C1? I don’t want to have yellow teeth when I’m older but I don’t want a drastic difference between the premolar and my front teeth. I’m plagued with this decision. I was hoping I could get a lighter shade that would be a subtle difference from the rest and when looking at the color chart they all look similar so I’m confused
C1 isn’t really too dark, and as you go toward the back teeth tend to darken a little bit (a slightly dark molar will look a lot better than a slightly light molar). I’m sure you will be fine either way..but definitely let your dentist know if you have concerns on the shade!
It's not necessarily too bright, but if you are only veneering front teeth, you want to make sure you match the teeth you are not veneering. A B1 canine next to an A3 premolar is going to look pretty noticeable!
Can you make a video on how you handle stress, burnout, and physical strain as a dentist. I’m a pre dental student I that would help a lot! Just shared you channel with my pre dental chapter at my university and they loved it, thank you.
Thanks so much for sharing!! Honestly, with burnout, fatigue, stress being so common in dentistry, that's one of the reasons I started this channel and even why it's titled "Beyond Dentistry". The idea is that there is so much more to life than just your career. I really like that idea for a video or even a series. Thanks so much!
Did he ever do a video on this topic? I am looking for something like that since I really need it. The burnout and anxiety from Dentistry is killing me 😮
OKAY THE EDITING THOUGH🔥
Simran thanks so much bro!!
4th year dental student from Australia, I love your videos! They are so helpful and you are always so charismatic and passionate!
Thank you!! That really means a lot!!!

Pretty cool and simple tip! Thank you
Thank you!!
Thank you! Shared it with my team!
Thanks so much Dr. M!! I enjoyed your office's video on your infection control protocol. I need to look into surgically clean air!
Excellent information Dr. White!
Thanks so much!! Your lab is amazing!
Incredibly explained. 10/10
Thank you Justin!
Fantastic little video, as per usual!
Thank you doc!

Aaron thank you so much!! I’ve done the same thing with B/W pictures 😂
Hey thanks for the value chart. That’s a great tool. I’ll get my porcelain team to rearrange their guides.
Wow, that was VERY helpful!
Thank you so much!
Do they have any sort of paint !?
I enjoyed your explanation. Thank you.
What if color is not a good match before bonding? Will dentist send it back to lab for redo?

What’s the difference between vipi and vita shade colors?
Hi Dr! What do you think about shade 1M1? Is this a natural shade? If not what shade is best for natural, I don’t want bleach color:)
I believe 1M1 is still considered a natural shade, but it is lighter than B1.

You iust illuminated me bro good job
Thanks Asaad!!
How C1 is #6 and behind
B, A and D2, is perplexing to me!
C1 is clearly on par with A1.
I do Not understand this??
I am C1 and getting a three part bridge on one pre molar and two molars. He said if I’m whitening I should do it beforehand but that would mean I’d need to whiten forever . I wanted to get my natural of C1 and have the premolar B1 so if I decide to whiten later it would be ok. When I was looking at them they looked so similar!! Is it a big jump? The video quality 👌👌
Thanks so much!
What is the value and chroma of darker color tooth?
D
You make it simple
Is B1 too bright for veneer?
It's not necessarily too bright, but if you are only veneering front teeth, you want to make sure you match the teeth you are not veneering. A B1 canine next to an A3 premolar is going to look pretty noticeable!
I did b1 no regrets
What shade are your teeth?
did you memorize the sequence of the value by heart? ;)
