  • Sleigh runner conversions were an option for light buggies. I have a set of sleigh runners to rebuild and have steam bent some oak for new runners. The back two are okay, but after I have the front two rebuilt I will show how these runners are attached to the buggy and how they replace the wheels for wintertime use.

Wow thanks. I only went sleigh riding once and that was in Utah at Christmas time. It was a ride I will remember all my life. I was 12 years old at the time. My Dad his sister, and my Brother and my cousins went on the two bench sleigh. a Pursheron was pulling and we got to ride for 45 minutes. The horse had huge bells on his harness. I am 76 years old and still can see that sleigh in my mind.

I never get tired of watching David doing
anything. I think I watched the Borax series
3 times. And, learned something every time.
My computer monitor has a TV tuner in it.
I do NOT know why I spent extra for the
tuner. I'd rather re-watch good stuff on the
Tube, than watch the garbage on broadcast
TV. Most of what I watch, is some kind of
"makers." (I also watch history stuff. History
      guy is GREAT.)

As always, I love watching a true craftsman (craftsperson?) at his/her trade. Your videos have inspired me to build a wagon for my twin 3 year old grandsons to pull around behind them, collecting rocks, hauling toys etc. I have a small collection of woodworking tools that I use restoring old cars, trucks and tractors. Since my wagon project won't be nearly as involved as the ones you take on, my saws, drills, and, sanders, should be up to the task. It's basically just building a box that I'll attach to the frame of an "all terrain" yard wagon which I bought at my local big box home center. Sure, I'll have more money invested in the yellow pine, stain and hardware to build the box than I paid for the whole wagon that I bought. However, the enjoyment that the boys will get from it will far outweigh the cost! I'll also have a spare plastic body for my lawn wagon in case mine cracks! Win/win situation right?

I'm a retired service tech but my hobbies include bushcraft, woodworking, and blacksmithing. I've learned a lot from watching your videos and I've only watched the ones about sleighs.Things like adjusting bends in the metal I've been doing differently your way is easier and quicker. You must have been doing this kind of work for a long time to be as good at it as you are.

The runner's design looks very much like a winter toy that I had as a kid - a single ski with metal runner and a seat bolted on where the hub is located. It was lightweight and fast, and was also used as a seat when sitting around the bonfire at the top of the hill. We called it a 'Go-Devil'. (Oh, and if you wax or oil that handsaw blade, it'll cut much easier. Same for a handplane too.)

Here in Texas we see cutters/sleigh occasionally covered with dust and junk in old barns. I am always surprised because you would only have the chance to use them here about every ten years. On top of that you can usually wait a day and it will melt off. So, I can see how owning a set of these wold be a much more economical arraignment than owning a cutter that rarely gets used. Especially if you were a Doctor or someone who might be called out in an emergency or delivery in any weather. Just convert your daily driver in minutes into a cutter when the need arises. Pretty smart thinking to me.

You seem to have a tool to just about anything. For example the adjustable tool you used to bend the steel strap. You are a lucky man to have such a workshop. You are right about people thinking somethings are simple little jobs. Most people don't have any idea how much effort goes into design of "simple" things.

Any one else had the lyrics of "To Grandma's House We Go" in their head while watching this.
I remember seeing pictures of my Grandma sitting in a Ford Model T converted with front runners and rear tracks during a trip to Canada in the late 1920's. Must have been an idea passed on from these old buggy conversions.

Like you mentioned it was not a complicated project, however it does take time and effort to get it right and functional. Thanks for sharing this video as well as all your others, like you on Ed mentioned who need broadcast TV when we have craftsmanship like your to watch without the annoying ads that often run a third length of the program! Enjoy your holidays with your family, my best wishes for a great new year, Robert.

Thanks, Mr. Dave, another delight!! And 'tis the season to be be fabricating a logging sleigh... Seems like the pieces I saw of Dad's sleigh (or snow wagon!!) didn't have iron runners, even... But it was heavy duty, seems the main "cross beams" were at least 4" X 6" the rear runners were pulled by 'X' chains from the heels of the front runners.. But the memory does suffer some.. perhaps it was appropriate to haul tree length firewood up to 16' or 20' long out of the woods to home where it was buzzed up.
Also seems like Dad thought the construction was white oak... (an excellent choice, too)
    Happy Happy!!

Also, when you see a lot of nuts, bolts, cast and stamped parts your looking at the latter days of mailorder flatpack kits, even if only the running gear or fittings.
