"My hope is in the Lord who gave Himself for me." This strong statement of faith opens and closes this thoughtful and meaningful anthem and becomes the sure foundation upon which both the text and the accompaniment are built. Marianne Forman studied with three
composers whose music we love to sing (Craig Courtney, Dan Forrest, and Howard Helvey), and as an active church musician, she arranges and composes pieces for her congregation, choir, and instrumentalists on a nearly weekly basis. She also teaches private piano lessons from her home in sunny San Diego, where she resides with her husband and four children. The words are by Norman J. Clayton (1903 - 1992), a life-long church organist who began at leading worship at age 12. In order to create songs worthy of his Lord, he made it his practice to memorize scripture, so his songs would have a strong Biblical basis. His texts reflect his evangelical emphasis, focused on the saving work of Christ and the sweetness of relationship with God through Him.
My hope is in the Lord, who gave Himself for me,
And paid the price of all my sin at Calvary.
For me He died; for me He lives,
And everlasting life and light He freely gives.
No merit of my own, His anger to suppress.
My only hope is found in Jesus’ righteousness.
For me He died; for me He lives,
And everlasting life and light He freely gives.
And now for me He stands before the Father’s throne.
He shows His wounded hands and names me as His own!
For me He died; for me He lives,
And everlasting life and light He freely gives.
His grace has planned it all, ‘tis mine but to believe
And recognize His work of love and Christ receive.
For me He died; for me He lives,
And everlasting life and light He freely gives.
My hope is in the Lord, who gave Himself for me.
(Words by Norman J. Clayton, 1945)
