    I think you are the FIRST PERSON I have seen on youtube with a thermostat on their heat mats! You also fertilize your developed seedlings. I give them a very weak liquid fertilizer at about 2 or 3 weeks. I am on a much much smaller scale than you. I just started sowing seeds with 7/8 potting soil with thin layer of seed starting mix on top so I don't have to uppot so soon....Love your garden and your videos....Where do you get that super coarse vermiculite from? The journey has been awesome so far....

    Hey, Travis. This is a side subject, so please bear with me. I read somewhere recently that there was a big recall on air fryers. You may have heard about it already. My Motto is always, "better safe than sorry." Apparently, the Cosori air fryer and other air fryers are heating up and causing fires. If you have one that is a danger, you can get a new one - for free - from the Company that they are made at. Hope this helps you and/or someone else who reads this. Keep up the good work! GOD bless you and your whole family!~Sincerely with much Respect. ^Dr. Lady S.^

    • @LazyDogFarm

    • @LazyDogFarm

      I'd till it several times, then put a tarp on it for a few weeks. Pull back the tarp, till it again and water well. Put the tarp back on and keep repeating that cycle 3-4 times. It will eventually get rid of it, but it takes a good bit of disturbance and light exclusion.

    >it would keep the temperature of the ground considerably lower,
    >it would suppress weeds because the cover crop would still be covering, >there would be less need for the multiple runs of the chicken tractor

    Between nut sedge and bermuda grass all over, I am planting above ground in planters, no weeds now! Nut sedge has a pea sized nodule that can last for years in hibernation, and when started up, can spread laterally above and below ground. I have seen roots go 6 inches under ground laterally! Victory seeds adopted a dwarf tomato project done with volunteers around the nation working in cooperation with a university extension service. So, these determinant, dwarf varieties ought to be low maintenance, weed free, above ground. I will be putting in dwarf Kodiak King and Hanna's Prize. We will see what happens. I will plant a few indeterminate varieties, and the way to do that is to dig a pit deeper than the bermudas and nut sedge, put in clean soil, and line it with a plastic barrier below and above ground to keep the bad stuff out, and then when the tomatoes are mature enough, put in cardboard around the plants, then cover with pine straw mulch. For the plastic ligner, we had vinyl plank ripped up from the kitchen floor to replace, so this will be the barrier I will put in each pit. That way, we should have something like an in ground, bottomless planter to use for a few years before they get invaded by bermuda and nut sedge. What a nightmare!

    • @JunkyardGardener
      @JunkyardGardener ปีที่แล้ว

      Nut sedge and Bermuda is about standard for a gardeners #1 nemesis.ill tell you if you cultivate or lightly till the top few inches and pluck up as much of that Bermuda as you can . tarp it a few months Force that nut sedge to germinate then stirrup hoe or wheel hoe remove any remanence of bermuda you uncover. and retarp.compost heavy and re tarp.youll get it under control!. I also recommend a cover crop of sorghum Sudan planted thick as you can get it with a good tarping after.within a season you'll have the upper hand. A good wheel hoe and tarps are a investment but are hard to beat and worth every penny !

    My land has tons of bramble roots... it was logged. I'd love to be able to run a tiller in it without it jamming up! I was going to dump good soil on it, but it would only feed the weeds. The land is hilly, so raised beds would be really difficult, but might be the only option at this point. 🤔

  • @ajb.822

    Yes. I have had to move a few times, so, have started 2 no-till gardens now (my 1st one had been plowed and tilled when we 1st moved in, this was just before I'd learned why not to, and I did have more weed pressure I think due to that. Anyways, since then I have used black plastic or a tarp ( not as good but better than nothing) to kill off grass on parts, but since it was already May or June those times, I also had to get going, and have used cardboard and/or construction paper rolls, held down by bricks as I went, doing a pass or 2 at a time then adding hay, grass clippings or whatever I had as mulch as I went. The paper tears very easily if walking on it when wet, without decent layer of mulch on top. Esp. where the grass had been thin/weak anyways ( my new rental, very, very unhealthy soil :( ! ), &/or I'd been able to weaken it by mowing a few times over a day or 2 then covering asap, I didn't have too much able to push up through. When It does, and I can't pull it out by the roots well enough, I cover it with cardboard and mulch. Then, if it comes through again, it's weaker plus the ground is softer by then, and it comes out.
