this album is a solid 10 for me. all of the songs are individually appealing, they fit together as a whole piece of work, and fiona sounds like a force of nature. it is one of my favourite albums ever, for sure.
This album was way ahead of its time. I love how raw this album is, and it helped me through hard times. I listen to this album to this day start to finish without skipping a track.
Jonathan is dope! When she says, just tolerate my little fists tugging on your forest chest. Very emotional. Piano is so dark and haunting until it's playful. The drums roll in in a very violent machine gun style then disappear. The whole album is very punch you in the face then hold yu and sing you to sleep. Dark, violent, and loving.
I hope a new album comes out soon. All 4 albums are perfect. Best line is from Extraordinary Machine - “I think he let me down when he didn’t disappoint me”.
@@jamespatrick74 No way you earnestly replied to a 4 year old sarcastic comment. This was after he gave Fetch The Bolt Cutters a 7 and it set off a wave of discourse about him being a misogynist and not "getting" music from a women's perspective. So I commented on this to point out the absurdity of that because he gave Fiona an even higher score here.
I feel like Jonathan is a very underrate song. The beauty is in it's deceptive simplicity. Put on a pair of good headphones, turn it up, and close your eyes. She managed to make a song using a whirring machine in the background. The little turns in the melody of the chorus that mirror the piano are very characteristic of how I think she would actually say that phrase to somebody in that situation in speech. If you picture what she's talking about in the song while listening to it, it fits that kind of atmosphere perfectly. It's simplistic, because she's in a comfortable silence with an ex who she's having a moment with, and it's like she's saying how she hopes he's happy even if they aren't together anymore in her head as they stand there starring at each other without speaking during their first encounter post break up. I've heard the same review about the song by everybody since the album came out, and I really think if you think there isn't enough contrast between the verse/chorus you aren't getting the song. Granted, I'm a huge Fiona fan, so I've listened so many times, and each time the album grows on me more and more. "Hot Knife" I think is just a preference type of thing if you like it. When I first herd the album, that was my least favorite song, an it was a big fav of most on the internet. It grew on me... a lot. "Left Alone" and "Werewolf" are my favorites. I enjoy your reviews and you put into words my feelings about Lana Del Rey in a way nobody i talk to seems to agree with. :)
Jonathan is easily my fave track on the record along with Werewolf. that piano chords progression is pure perfection (on the contrary, I think Every Single Night is by far not one of the best tracks on the record and aside from the lyrics I'm not sure why it's so popular)
Hey I know you mentioned something about how Fiona looped/layer tracks on hot knife, but in her NPR interview she says that she actually had her sister as a guest singer on the track and that they shared a mic and everything.
I love that you mentioned her new maturity. Like how he bit off her head as a shark but she admits to providing a full wound. Fiona is a pure poet. Every word is thought out. It's impossible to not feel her intensity and emotion, possible at the cost of her sanity. LOVE YOU FIONA!!
+ConfusedVirgo I listened this album back in 2012 and since then, I'm a big fan of hers and I've found all her albums to be very wonderful. When The Pawn is my favorite, tho. :)
i LOVE this album. she exceeded all my expectations. lyrically, "Regret" is my absolute favorite: i can actually see and feel what she is singing on that track and i am both disgusted and touched. musically, "Hot Knife" is the best because it is pure harmonizing vocals accompanied by piano and organic percussion. it also kind of captures the ecstasy one feels when experiencing a new romance.
This album is pretty uncommon among popular artists. I mean, it`s stripped down and definitly not overproduced. It`s not pretensious and even minimalistic at times. Her voice sounds more and more "experienced" and the atmosphere in the grooves, sounds and percussions is almost Tom Waits-ish at times. I fucn love this woman. Best album so far.
@@lowlypieceofdata7542 it's more challenging than The Idler Wheel tbh. I kept skipping tracks on FTBC cuz I can't stand the mess. But, somehow overall I appreciated the hard work. 8/10 for me
Funny you mentioned Tom Waits, I often feel like she’s the female version of Tom. Never giving in to trends, always honest, not contrived, relying on feeling, always interesting, never boring. Poetic, understated but in the grandest, most animalistic way possible without wanting it. She just is, and this sets her and Tom apart, at the very tip of the songwriters Mount Rushmore.
The multitracking on "Hot Knife" is brilliant, especially while listening to it on a hi fi turntable. Every track has its own complete space in the sound stage.
I legit saw this album cover in the CD section at the public library and went into it without any knowledge of who Fiona Apple is and I was thoroughly impressed. Crazy how the cover art is just as good as the album is
At first listen, I wasn't digging this album, as it is SO different from Tidal and When The Pawn. However, after each listen, it grows on me more and more.
The Idler Wheel... is my first 10/10 record of the year. Your review touched on all aspects of the album that I appreciate, I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it too Anthony. =)
Preach! I think people are making a mistake in just comparing stripped down sound to stripped down sound and seeing FTBC as an extension of Idler Wheel. It's not. Idler Wheel still had very elaborate melody development, the songs were wholesome while difficult and abrasive in the best possible sense of the words. I don't get that from much of FTBC. Even the more drawn out songs like I Want You To Love Me compare at best to maybe Periphery.
man this album is good, ive never heard a artist getting this in touch with their emotions like this. Although my favorite song by her is off of extrodinary machine, this one still hits home. The battle between her and herself in the song "every single night" is insane
Fiona is hands down one of the most poetic, creative and just plain genius lyricists around. I can’t think of anybody who can match her incredible talent and artistic intelligence. Truly an underrated and iconic artist.
Fiona Apple is, and always has been, one of my favorite artists. It just worries me how dark and moody her songs are. Don't get me wrong; she writes her best music when she's sad. I just hope she's doing okay, in her personal life, ya know? I saw some recent pictures of her where she was looking a little...gaunt. Nevertheless, The Idler Wheel is a beautiful masterpiece. Very insightful review, Anthony. (As per usual.)
Your right on the money, the whole album easily pulls in you in once you put it on, I've been a fan of hers since I was in high school, i'm 30 now and she still amazes me with her passion for words and music, in conclusion Fiona rocks!

Oh boy, if Anthony didn’t like the multi layering of the song Hot Knife in this album, I wonder what he’ll think of this new Fiona album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which is getting universal acclaim.
You mentioned the last track had her layering her voice, but actually her sister was singing that song with her! From Wikipedia: "Her older sister, Amber, sings cabaret under the stage name Maude Maggart." And I believe you'll see her credits in the liner notes.
Ya... you're good at this :) I LOVE Fiona's music, but you certainly have a far more detailed relationship to her work. You should review Two Gallants!
