Hanging a Hummingbird Feeder - Family Plot

  • Debbie Bruce from Wild Birds Unlimited shows how to hang two different hummingbird feeders and talks about maintaining them.
Debbie brought two ways to hang a feeder. First, she shows a freestanding pole that can be pushed into the ground. She also shows a hanger that can be stuck to a window with suction cups.
Hummingbirds drink nectar which is 4 parts water and 1 part white table sugar. Don’t use honey or a sugar substitute. Ants like to get the sugar too, so Debbie shows how an ant trap will keep the ants out of the feeder. Hummingbirds will avoid nectar that is contaminated with ants.
Change the nectar every 3-5 days even if there is some left. If the weather is hot it will need to be changed more often. Also, If the nectar gets cloudy it needs to be changed.
It is important to regularly clean hummingbird feeders. Wash them in soapy water. You can also use a mild bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water).
Leave the feeders out with nectar in them until late in the fall. The hummingbirds will migrate south even if there is still food available. Leaving the feeder up will give much needed energy to late migrating birds.

Put petroleum jelly around base of Shepard's Hook to prevent ants from climbing up it.

I have a 2 inch deep ant moat that I put 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in. Oil doesn't evaporate and its surface tension is much lower than water's. Ants used to actually skitter across the water moat and still make it to the feeder. Sorry other birds but I have several alternate water sources for them in my garden.

How cold of nectar can they drink?

I love seeing the hummers every year. A few years ago we had many of them. Last year we only had a few. I haven't seen any this year except for the 3 that seem to live here all the time. I live in Texas City, TX by Galveston. Do you think that the hurricane had a lot to do with them being late or not showing up? I cleaned all my feeders and filled them, but tomorrow I guess I will have to dump, clean, and refill the feeders.

yes, they likely migrated farther north last year due to the storm. We also had a north east ice storm in April 2018 so our hummers stayed farther south.
