    Pentatonic + Sixes&Nines = Diatonic
    Diatonic - Sixes&Nines = Pentatonic
    When playing in minor pentatonic, if the IV chord is major, use Dorian. If the IV chord is minor, us Aeolian (Natural minor scale).
    That is all I know.

    Hi Claus, I've loved, loved, loved some of your youtube lessons. I am a fan! However, this lesson was like a frenetic mad hatter trying to reveal a pearl of wisdom from pockets full of jumbled and crinkled up paper.
    I certainly understand what you were teaching, but in my humble opinion, this presentation could have benefited from a significant degree of tightening-up and pre-record button organization.
    Again, I am a fan. Even recently referred a talented guitar friend to your vids. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    A Dorian isn't going to work over a C Major chord progression because the F# will clash against the F Major chord in your progression. That's fairly basis stuff tbh.

      Igor Lebich - How advanced are you my friend? Have you tried just messing with chord shapes alone and different chord positions and arpeggios and then just adding some extra notes in between, ''Ornaments'', here and there for colour before you move to different scale shapes? I apologize if you are passed that point already but, if not, it is how I started and it helped me a great deal and helped my improvising, my rhythm playing and helped me speed things up a lot. So, by the time I started to experiment with scales, different modes, ethnic scale shapes, passing notes and finally chromatics, I understood exactly what would fit perfectly over each chord change, what were the good notes to use for tension and what kinds of dissonance I could use whilst still sounding catchy, melodic and adding some of that ''Wonky'' sounding cartoony stuff! LOL. Just taking my time to flesh things out bit by bit and by understanding why it sounded good in the first place and by understanding it I could then ''superimpose'' these ideas onto all kinds of musical genres and really rip.

    The E pent with the D major over top of it is the exact same as E pent with a C# minor over it with the addition of two G#'s located on the A and G string. Not sure about all this theory?

I got mine in mint condition, like new off the shelf it looked when i got it. I paid him next to nothing for it. I got very lucky with that guitar. Now someone is trying to buy it off of me for $400.00 and i refused to sale it!

    When you say "blues scale" are you simply referring to the minor pentatonic? Or do you mean the minor pentatonic with the flat fifth ("blue note") added?

  • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist
    @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    So a question for you Claus?
    When I started both the pentatonic and then major scale I quickly started seeing the pattern almost visually and one or the other are fairly easy. However when doing these overlays as you're doing, things get a bit confused. What do you normally find in development, you learn eventually to see the layers or do you as a guitarist at some point start figuring out notes more by formula than by visual mapping??

    playing D over E? I thought Dorian means to emphasisize the second note in a given scale (in E that's F#) AND staying in the key of E (4 sharps). Playing D would mean to use only 2 sharps(!)

    Is there a theoretical reason why Dorian works sometimes but not others when playing a minor chord progression?

    • @gtrdoc911
      @gtrdoc911 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How about this. Check out the IV chord. By this I mean e.g. if playing in A check out if the IV chord of the progression is major or minor i.e. D or D minor. If it's D, must use A Dorian. Why? cos it has 3rd (f sharp) of the D in it's progression. If it's Dm, use the A minor scale cos it has the flatted third (f). That's one of the main points he makes in this vid that I hadn't ever realized before. There is only ONE note difference b/w the minor (Aeolian) scale and the same note Dorian scale.

    • @anxiousmindmusic
      @anxiousmindmusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just about got there through trial and error, and now I find this :) Dorian on the iv just sounds right

    • @gtrdoc911
      @gtrdoc911 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a friendly question. When you write"iv" instead of "IV" it usually implies the minor chord. So are you saying in the key of A when you play a Dm the Dorian scale sounds good over that? Cause, as I said, the Dorian scale has a normal 3rd and the Aeolian (minor) scale has a flatted third thus to my ears, the Aeolian sounds much better over the Dm.

    You played most chord progressions in the key of A and used position one of A minor pentatonic with additional notes and of course A major pentatonic. I understand C major and A minor relativety. However in your last example you played a chord progression in the key of C. Why did you not play in position one of the C minor pentatonic as in the first examples instead of staying in position one of A minor pentatonic.
