I'm sure my friends think I am crazy but I have been sharing all your videos. I think this is the most important one but I have been watching you for months and this is the first time I have seen this basic mobility video. So many of us can't do it all of it. I can do most of it. I am blessed to be able to do so at 65. Here's to aging gracefully
I'm 68, just found a few of your videos and this seems to be just what I need. I want and need to increase my flexibility. I'll be checking out more of your videos. It is good that you provide the starting points, because as you age these simple things are not a simple as they used to be or you expect them to be. It sneaks up on you.
Thanks for the great exercises to loosen up all of us gargoyles, and reminding us we can still fly, once we loosen and strengthen our disused and underused muscles! Most of us would be happy to shed the rock dust; your videos and demos make it straightforward to improve, no matter what level we're at currently. I'm telling all my friends, of all ages, to check out your channel. Thanks again.❤️💪
These two are fantastic, the videos are a real eye opener and everything he says and his approach makes perfect sense. Super helpful videos Tom, thanks very much!
Thank you! I started over a year ago while pumping gas to be pro active and started to standing on one leg. Started with a few seconds now EVERY chance i get while standing in line I'm like a flamingo. One leg is how I stand and roll each foot in circles. Now I will start turning my head and I'm 61. These tests are priceless. Thanks for making the world a better place.
Love the humor and fun you bring! Also love the positive "you can do this" attitude. I have learned so much and it has helped me tremendously. Thanks so much!
Cross leg - Can do, but can't push my knees all the way to the floor. Getting up - Need one hand Bow position - Not a chance, not even close. Hurts my lower spine when I try and my right shoulder. Leg stand - No problem My current (known) issues: Extreme tight muscles pretty much my entire body. Several physio therapists have told me I am the "worst case" they've ever had when it comes to short tight muscles and inflexibility due to that. I have a lot of pain in my back left hip area and get jolts of pain in my groin area when doing certain movements. Can barely touch my hands behind my back due to shoulder and pec-stiffness. Can't reach past my knees when folding over due to my entire back side (back, but, thighs and calves) having such tight muscles. This also causes a very bad pelvic tilt. I am the desk gargoyle of your nightmares 👿
I hope you checked out the Playlists on this channel. If not go! Just after I week I found my issues and have more flexibility than I had as an athlete. Now I'm working to strengthen these muscles and I and feelin it! Good luck
Just found you today. Love your approach. Any chance we could get a follow up to this video with a few exercises or ideas on each test to progress. I'm like you were and cannot sit cross legged without hands behind me. Also cannot reach my ankles without major squirming. Lots of work ahead of me. Thanks for all the great info!
I started sleeping on the floor about a year ago as it is much better for my vestibular migraine & an additional benefit I have notice I a great improvement in my ease of getting up from floor level.
Fiona Watson fantastic! Something I wouldn’t have though of for migraines! Great to hear! I think my wife would kill me if I threw our bed out one day though 🤣🤣
Oh dear. Everyone seems to be able to do it. I couldn’t do the keg stands fir more than 20s each, so have to work in that. Left leg definitely weaker. Also I could only grab my right leg, not my left. I did hurt my back 3 weeks ago but I don’t think that’s the issue here. Have some work ahead of me.
Hi Tom...I'm 55, been working out since I was 12, lifting, american football, karate, running, stretching, kettlebell, steel mace, you name it I've probably tried it. I've been saying for the past 25 yrs. or so, that flexibility is, for me, the most important part of the three aspects of physical fitness. Your videos are fantastic!! Thank you so much. Are their any videos for someone who has had a hip replacement? Thanks!!
I have the I have very short arms for my structure. I can’t even begin to do the boat pose even with months of practice and daily yoga. I can only grab 1 foot ever.
sometimes structure does limit us! An alternative is the tabletop position, where you're on all fours, but with your front facing upwards and pushing your hips up so your torso is flat 😄
Well I can sit criss cross straight up all day, that ones good. I can get up off the floor with one hand pretty quick. Lots of the ways Jenny is getting up with no hands, seem to require that same move I struggle with kneeling. Maybe it's part ankle flexion, or maybe quad tightness? I can't get my butt near my heels, and even squatting (with weight at gym) my depth is a huge struggle even in squat shoes. The bow..nope, not even close. Not even if I bend to the side to grab one leg. Standing on one foot is fine. Any suggestions on what is tight and how to fix it? Should everyone be able to get their butt near their heels even if they have big legs?
not everyone will get it to touch, but getting it close enough to be able to stand from the floor is ideal! The link I sent on your other comment might help open up the quads in that position, or you can start with this one! th-cam.com/video/CL0ntPqXHUQ/w-d-xo.html
what if i can't do the bow position? How can i work on this? I can do the standing on one leg perfectly and the first one (getting up) is getting a lot better (i can do it without hands, but not as flexibel as Jenny yet).
I only passed the one leg test. My legs immediately cramp being bent trying to grab my feet. And as for rhe first one, my knees are way up, no where near floor. Not sure what main issue is (hips, knees) or what to focus on first to correct these issues.
2:15 You've described exactly my issue I'm struggling on daily basis. But I can't find any advices on your channel how to work on it for my daily routine. Could you please suggest me any videos with excercises that would best address this issue? (I have issues with hips as well as with pelvic alignment)
Maksymilian Piechota the more recent sciatica one would be beneficial! If you are that limited though you would definitely benefit from The Simplistic Mobility Method 😄
The way she got up from being cross legged looked like sorcery. I've literally never seen anyone get up like that. Her feet were still crossed and she was pretty much still sitting down and then she just stood up. How? How is that possible?
I could do this in my twenties, thirties and, just, in my forties! More weight and no yoga means it seems incredible that I once could! But I aim to do it again 😊👍
I've just found your video, I have been practicing the single leg stand for a while now, I do 1 60 seconds on each leg x3. I was diagnosed with osteopenia last year and have been trying to improve my bone health and fitness. Would your videos be suitable for people with osteopenia. Love the interactions between the two of you.🎉
Hi Tom! 1st & 3rd no problem at all, but on the 2nd one hamstrings feel about to pull. Can't get to my legs. Pec and biceps seem to be working good. Any advice or drills? Greetings from Spain. Keep it up!
Hey! Would use a strap or towel and just focus on doing one side at a time! Also stretch out your sides as sometimes that can hinder your ability to reach down too! 😄
I surprisingly passed the moves! I have terrible pain left hip, diagnosed osteoarthritis. Walking is often painful( and the day after a walk ) and also side step movement. Because I passed these movements quite easily I'm wondering if pain could be a strength issue as well as arthritis. What do you suggest? Do you have videos to build strength in that area?
These are great videos !! Finally someone who understands that a beginner or average person is not someone who is ready to audition for the Cirque de Soleil !! :-) I am ok with the cross-legged sitting and pretty good at the one leg stance but the grabbing my ankles thing (and the possibly related sitting on my heels pose) is not possible for me. Does that mean it's my quadriceps which are super tight ?
Really good point!! Can be because of quads for the knee sit and lower back/hamstrings for toe touch but main thing to focus on is just spending time with those movements, whatever the limitation actually is will figure itself out!
Classical Indian Dance (Bharatnatyam) Superpower: I can stand on one foot with arms just hanging at the sides watching a live tennis match and not lose balance at any moment!! 😂😂😂 And it's much easier when barefoot

great way to access myself thank you!

Our clockwork hips one is great for replacements as you can work on ranges with little weight going through the joint and build that up gradually
I am going to get up and practice these right now. Thank you
Best way to do things! 😄 otherwise you forget then never get round to it 💪🏼

This was funny. I can stand on a leg just fine, I can sit upright, but grabbing my leg as described😂 Had loads of laughter trying to do it.
It is the hardest of the 3! Well done though 💪💪

arthritic left knee, cant sit back on haunches. 80% range of motion.

you can start with a tabletop bridge or crab position! it hits very similar elements without being as intense!

Yep! Better moving hips help a lot!

Good hip mobility and knee strength! Weight is a factor too
