I haven't been through the tunnels since 2004. Thank you for taking me on the journey. We used to go see my sister her husband and kids. My boys enjoyed the road trip. I found the tunnels most fascinating parts of the turnpike.

Ahh nothing better than riding through mountains with metal🎸🎸in background especially since we have none here to ride through. On a family summer vacation road trip on Pa.pike going in one end of tunnel was sunny🌞and dry and other end out was pouring rain☔minds all blown😵never forget that😵and no radio signal inside them.

Absolutely fascinating. I drove the PA turnpike frequently when I lived in the area. I actually lived very close to the Willow Grove entrance to the turnpike. What an exciting ride. Thank you for posting this.

So many hours of my childhood were spent traversing the PA turnpike when my family traveled from Baltimore to Butler 3 times or so per year (I'm the only member of my immediate family who wasn't born in Butler. Dad got transferred to Baltimore and I'm the baby.)

Many a trip through those tunnels going from Cleveland to Elkton MD back in the 70's. All the Howard Johnson's at the rest areas and Exxon gas. Cross the Susquehanna river, get off at Harrisburg and head south. Crossing that bridge you would see 3-mile island off to one side. Never thought anything of it, prior to 1979 anyways.

I love driving through tunnels. We don’t have mane near me since the land is so flat. The big exception is the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, connecting Michigan and Ontario.

If they so shut down Allegany Tunnel in the near future I can see tons of people hoping to sneak in and explore it the same way alot of us do at the Abandoned Pa Turnpike.

As originally designed in 1937, there were nine turnpike tunnels. From west to east: Laurel Hill was built and bypassed in the mid-60's. Quemahoning and Negro Mountain tunnels were bypassed during construction in the 30's. Allegheny Mountain still exists. Rays Hill and Sideling Hill were abandoned and bypassed in the late 60's. Tuscarora, Kittatinny and Blue Mountain still exist. All became twin tunnels in the 60's when backups of five miles and more were common at the two-lane tunnels. With the Turnpike Commission rebuilding the original Turnpike and expanding it to six lanes, the four-lane tunnels are becoming obsolete and are deteriorating a bit, but still safe to drive. Allegheny is to be either bypassed or expanded and rebuilt soon; plans for rebuilding the other three tunnels are underway.

@@g.t.richardson6311 I77 in Virginia has 2 tunnels through similar bridges, East River Mountain and Big Walker Mountain, which are in the Valley and Ridge province of the Appalachians, just like Tuscarora, Kittatiny and Blue Mountain are in PA. The Allegheny Tunnel is actually through the Allegheny Front, which is an escarpment, not part of the Valley and Ridge.

Thank you so much! I'm traveling by fifth wheel from the Pacific Northwest to Pennsylvania in a few months and trying to decide which route to take. It's good to get a preview of what I'll encounter. I've been through tunnels so narrow they gave me the heebie-jeebies, but these look okay even though the Allegheny seems really long.

I heard that a truck driver was recently killed in the Lehigh Tunnel. I think an electric beam or a slab of concrete fell from the ceiling and went through his windshield. You think maybe this will force PA to adress the aging tunnels and come up with possible solutions?

If they decide to bypass the Allegheny tunnel. They should put 4 miles of road way on each side and call it the Abandoned Turnpike West and make it a bike and hike trail too. Provided they make sure the tunnel wont collapse and kill anyone. But it would be unique being an abandoned double tunnel.
