If Aro decided to destroy the family, they know Alice would see it since she is watching him. The easiest way was to let Jane decide to allow Victoria to act out her plan and they pick up the pieces. The members only show up to save face...like "oh we were about to step in to stop this but you guys beat us to it" kinda thing. Otherwise other vampires may accuse the Volturi of corruption and attempt to overthrow their leadership

I noticed reactors keep commenting on the violent nightmares that Bella is having, and her reactions to them in her sleep. Seriously people? Because being hunted by a vampire, led to believe her mother was doomed by said vampire, being tortured and nearly turned by said vampire, would not be enough to give somebody PTSD nightmares? Especially after a traumatic event like somebody leaving you that you expected to be there for the rest of your life? Is the story badly written? Yes.
