HOLY MOLY when she said, "your surroundings stress you out." I recently discovered these feelings for myself not realizing where this stress was coming from and hearing it come out of someone else's mouth is mind-blowing to me.
Yep, for years I couldn't work out why I would feel anxious and overwhelmed when walking into my house. Fast forward four years of decluttering and the feeling has gone away. I didn't realize these feelings were caused by having too much stuff.
I still live at my mom's house and the thing is, she's a huge hoarder (food, clothes, random items, I mean, EVERYTHING), and I didn't really realize it when I was younger but now that I do chores like an adult (not just """cleaning""" my bedroom lol) and actually care about my environment, it stresses me out so much... It's a weird way to put it but I feel like everything being so full around makes my mind unable to relax? Like, I can't relax in such a full space. It's not even messy, it's just that we have too many things; things we don't need, superficial things, things that take space that we don't even use...! It's crazy. Both my mom and my sister are hoarders and they are often wondering "how I can live having so little things" haha. I actually have just enough ! I use everything I have until I can't anymore and need a new one. Plus, I treat myself once in a while and it's enough for me. In my opinion, being too materialistic and always feeling the NEED to have/buy something means you're trying to fill some kind of void (I think that's the case with my mom and my sister anyway). Feeling good in your head/body and learning to appreciate and be satisfied with what you have is essential to be healthy in my opinion. I can't wait to have a home on my own where I can feel comfortable !
my mother's the same as yours! I'm trying to make her read KonMarie book, just to have a light start about her own possessions, but she doesn't want to give away clothes or books. I think that it is something deeper than a simple amount of objects, it's something psychological...
Hang on a minute. Why does everyone who works shifts beat themselves up about achieving things on their days off? I've just found your channel, I should be asleep pre night shifts!! I'm very guilty of most of the things you mentioned, on my days off I'm running a house, looking after a three year old and exhausted! I get very little time to be alone and deal with clutter. Enjoy your life and don't feel you need to be busy. You of all people should realise that life is precious and live for the moment.
Literally almost all of these apply to me. I'm loving your honest chats about this. I cleaned out one of my "moving boxes" that I haven't touched in the year since I moved while I watched this. Feels good. I still have a long way to go but making steps... I'd love to see any advice about how to find places to put things that don't really have a place but still get a lot of use.
That's a new and really good suggestion I'll add it, thank you! I have a home/place for everything to get when it's put away. It doesn't have to be perfect!
Great talk. Decision fatigue and analysis paralysis is certainly a thing. Mine is getting better in my decluttering journey. I heart minimalism. 💕 I think a list of good questions are very helpful to people getting started in decluttering. I like yours, “will I use this every week?” I had to get as clear as possible about why I wanted to live with fewer items to let them go. I think many people are stuck. They want minimalism but don’t want it *more than* keeping all their items. You have to arrive at wanting minimalism more to be able to let it go. I cheer everyone one here. Keep studying your intentions and your fears. You can overcome. You can be clutter free! ⭐️
ForgiveAndLove09 I can relate to that, I've gotten to a point with minimalism I kind of feel a little stuck. If for some reason I had to live out of a suitcase tomorrow I basically know what I would need and not need, but I still have a lot more right now just because I don't have a reason to live out of a suitcase.
Janell Kristina Yes, we do gather easily but the good thing is you are aware of what you really need for peaceful living. As minimalist we continue to edit our possessions and I try to embrace the different phases of the journey. Thankfully they all have something to teach us. : ) An editing question I use is: would I carry this in a 3month backpack trip. Peace ⭐️
Wow, this hit home. My mums a hoarder as well. When I moved out she had famula tins of pencil shavings and one of coke bottle lids that she was going to use one day. I'm pleased to say I went the opposite direction. I'm still on my minimalist journey and am not where I want to be yet, but am getting closer.
I started last February & I'm not surprised how disciplined I've been. I even cut my hair & it's grown so much in it's natural state. I really enjoyed this video! Tfs!!
You basically described by life and my apartment. I’m kind of a hoarder and I dream of having a clean apartment. It will be great if you can give more concrete and easy steps to declutter and minimize. Thanks!
Storage isn't the solution long term but if you can move things out of your main living space, you can start to feel some of the benefits of living in a less crowded space. Think how much you think you need and cut it in half and then box up everything else, and then in a month evaluate. I put away a ton of pans and plates and even silverware and cups and I don't miss them at all. I might even move then on, eventually. It's not strictly minimalist, but some things you can rotate, like clothes, if you like variety but want to cut down on consumerism. Cut your wardrobe down to something crazy like 14 items and pack everything up and see how you feel about your tiny wardrobe. Honestly, I may be a faux minimalist, but I think it's better to experiment and find your comfort zone before you just sell everything you own. (And end up buying replacements) of course if you have the funds and don't care about the environment you can give everything away and start from scratch. But I think if you don't change your mindset you'll just be in the same place before long. Also changing your mindset about *acquiring* new things, is so under rated. Getting rid of things won't do you any good if you keep bringing new things in. Some people really aren't cut out to be minimalists. Some don't like bare surfaces and do like having things in their space. So you for learn what's gonna be right for you.
You...are a breath of fresh air. You are vibrating at a frequency that is both constructive and problem solving, in a radically simplistic yet highly advanced fashion. "That" is extremely beautiful, in fact I think it's true beauty. I am just saying "thank you" for all of your work on improving/ manifesting genuine "humanity" which is synonymous with "good health." In my observation.
I definitely have a minor hoarding problem, but it's because I grew up thinking my family couldn't afford things, when in reality, they discouraged me from buying unnecessary things (young dumb me didn't see that). But that's translated into my "what if" personality. What if I can use this thing later. What if I can repurpose or upcycle this? I don't like the idea of going out to buy something I could've already had if I just hadn't thrown it away in the past. Plus I have a difficult time parting with anything remotely sentimental...ugggh
Oh my God, I am every single one. Aaagh! I haven't even got kids or pets to blame! But I've been living in the same apartment for 18 years. The more you move the easier it is to be minimalist, for obvious reasons. The older and more settled you get the more you accumulate. It just happens when you're living life. Hobbies especially can take up a lot of paraphernalia, but I'm not the type of person to just sit & watch TV every day. I like to make things, draw, paint, make jewellery & clothes, but they do take up a lot of space. But yeah, you can feel trapped by "stuff"... I need to have a clear out!!
You don't have to find the time to clear everything out at once! If you feel overtaken by stuff, just start by getting rid of one thing every day. Start really looking at the things you have. My parents recently downsized and they had this problem, where they didn't even know what they had because it just fades into the background of your living space. Start noticing that decorative collection of baskets on top of your kitchen cabinets, or something on your bathroom counter that's been there so long you don't even see it anymore. Then think, do I really need this thing? Do I use it? Do I love it? If you don't, find another home for it. Grab a big cardboard box and put one thing in it every day, and when it's full, take it to a donation center. It'll get easier and easier as you do it more and more, and before you know it, you'll start thinking before you even bring things into your home in the first place, and you'll start being able to breathe.
I can relate: My whole family were hoarders, I feel guilty when I throw stuff out. I feel like a minimalist trapped in a hoarder's body. The many unfinished projects can also be related to ADHD: always full of ideas, never finish anything. I have several guitars, and other hobby items. Always used to put pressure on myself how I should finish one thing before the next, but if you allow yourself to enjoy them rather than turning them into a nagging task, they won't feel like clutter in quite the same way... You look very beautiful and minimalist too, by the way! Your short hair really brings out your face.
I like the idea of spending less on things i wont use weekly and more on things I use weekly thats a good point 😍😍😍 i LOVE this video. Knick knacks and trinkets are the devil!!! 😱 i call them dust collectors. Yeah def do the decluttering how to for ppl who dont know where to start.
Wow! Saying I'm a hoarder is hot button word for me. I'm about 75% of what you said. I refuse to be a hoarder but I'm realizing I am an organized hoarder 🤦🏾♀️. I have to get rid of stuff.
Yessss I needed this. I've been minimizing for over a year and have really let a lot go but I need to let go of more cause I keep putting stuff on my chair and it's driving me crazy lol.
I just started watching your videos. I've seen about 6 now. You are wise beyond your years and I enjoy you sharing that wisdom. Makes me think. Thanks for what you do.
Everything you said applied to me and I want to change but I'm overwhelmed and I don't even want to think about starting because every corner of every room in this house needs decluttering and I feel it's going to be emotionally challenging
Wow, so spot on. Your videos are excellent Janell. Thank you. I have one more for you. "You're more comfortable in a hotel room than in your own home :-( " I have been trying to purge my belongings for years and know how overwhelming it can be when it's at a point where it takes weeks (months) not hours. My "stuff" is literally killing me through stress and wasted time. I'm determined to get through the purge process this time and transition to a simpler way of living.
I got a great tip to think of before buying something: say you buy a game for $50. Are you going to play it through to completion 50 times? If not, it's not worth it. Or wait until it's on sale.
As a gamer, I usually try not to buy a game unless I know I'll get an hour of gameplay for every dollar spent. I'm a fan of RPGs that can take 100+ hours to fully complete, so I generally get my money's worth, but I doubt I would play them through fifty times in a lifetime! XD
But, in reality, it's your clutter that's actually inducing the anxiety, not the video - the video is just a reminder... I wonder if it might be necessary to face that anxiety in order to actually eliminate the root cause... 🤔 And btw, I have a big problem with too much stuff and hoarding myself, so I know how you feel... And I haven't been able to deal with my stuff yet, but I feel I need to face the anxiety, rather than continue living in a cluttered mess that constantly stresses me out, just because I'm anxious about the prospect of dealing with it... 😔
My mom was a mini hoarder and had a junk room so I can kind of relate on that. But I have never been a hoarder or had too much stuff at one time. I think I wanted more better for myself so I tended to lean more on the neat, clean, and organized side. The mantra at the end is a good one to live by! Thanks for that!
This past week, I've been obsessed with decluttering my life. Every few months I have this impulse to just start shedding stuff. Now that I've found your videos I'm like ready to give my house away lmao 😂😂
Hi from France ! Thank you for this video, I just discovered your channel and I already learned a lot of things ! I grew up in a very cluttered environment myself and as soon as I moved in my own home, I gave away a lot of stuff. But your video showed me that I can do way better, and now I have a lot of ideas to make my own space less stressful !
I stumbled upon your page last week and gosh am I glad I did. I adore you and your views and just everything about you. I can’t stop watching. 🖤 thank you for being so enlightened and sharing your thoughts.
Yep, yep, yep! I knew that many of these would apply to me and a number of them do. My biggest thing is having to do a major decluttering of surfaces before people can come over and not being able to find things. Never finding what I am looking for is a huge thing for me. GAH! And, I declutter regularly. I am at the Goodwill donation centre almost weekly yet still have So. Much Stuff. Ugh.
I love black mirror! I love all your videos you are such a down to earth person, I know for sure if I knew you on a personal level we would be great friends. I also grew up with parents of hoarders and I do see how it can effect all aspects of my life, I do try to live minimally, some days can be a struggle and harder than others. Your videos are definitely a great resource that I enjoy watching from time to time! Thank you for making them 🙏
When you said sentimental stuff like going to the movies and keeping a ticket I hollered. That's so me *screams internally*. How did you know??? #allthefeels. I love your channel.
true story for me: growing up in my mom’s house she was a huge hoarder. not like boxes everywhere but there wasn’t a bare piece of floor without a rug on it or a bare wall without something covering it. Junk everywhere; spilling out of drawers, etc. I used to get headaches everyday when I lived there. Moved out and no more headaches. I wouldn’t say I’m minimalist but I don’t own that many things. It’s crazy what it can do to your mind.
Thank you. I hoard a lot of things. I am slowly getting rid of my things and cutting down on my purchases. It Isn't easy but I am doing this one day at a time.
Some of these definitely apply to me. I'm a recovering hoarder, though I'm more of a binge-and-purger when it comes to my stuff. I definitely need to find "homes" for my things, or get rid of more.
I know the feeling like your not doing enough with your free time! After I graduated from nursing school and started working Baylor weekend shifts I feel like I have 5 days a week where I’m trying to think of things to occupy my time because I was used to having no free time at all between school and work
Ahhhh... the end part was the best. ♡ I can't quite point out what makes your videos inspired me, but I do know one thing. You have such a beautiful and deep soul. You are really my inspiration. Thank you for just existing. ♡
Thank you soooo much for this video. I needed this! You are truly an inspiration! I’m so grateful & excited to start decluttering & start living my life! 💖💕
My mom just sold her house and I could not believe all the stuff she had stored in 4 bedrooms. I am going to purge some of my things before the new year. Thank you!
Mail is a big one for me. I recycle most. But don't stay on top of the stuff with info on it that needs shredding. So end up with backlogs of stuff that needs attention, or even opening 😱
I have too much stuff. But I also shop from my storage instead of the store. Pretty much the only thing that I need that I don't have is a dressy/professional winter coat and bookshelves.
I have way too many unread books and unplayed/unfinished video games. I told myself I'd whittle my way through them all eventually but just looking at them all stresses me tf out. So I sucked it up, got rid of the ones I knew I'd never touch, and the ones I've kept I get rid of the second I'm done.
I wouldn't say im a hoarder but i also wouldnt say im a minilmist... but i don't keep a lot of things that hold "sentimental value" but i like to keep tickets cause we go to movies and tavel a little more than average people. I have a specific jar for those things though and its kind of a cute little decorative piece
Yes, please let us know how you suggest one should get to a proper minimalist stage. I've thought about moving out with nothing (but essentials) and just running out and buying things as I need them. Do you think that would work?
A few weeks ago I felt like I couldn't breathe freely in my apartment so I started to declutter and got rid of 3 moving boxes full of stuff. Still trying to sell some furniture because I hate just throwing it away but unfortunately I haven't been successful yet. But as soon as that'll be gone I'll be happier. Even now after the decluttering I feel like I can breathe again.
Growing up our home was clean but definitely not organized. Like my mom put junk in drawers, cabinets, closets and the basement. Omg as I got older I would declutter our basement and throw things in the alley while my parents were at work. By my senior year the basement was almost empty 😂😂😂. She knew I was throwing stuff out but bc she had so much she couldn't tell me what exactly was missing.
Omg junk room - you just sent me back in time when mother used my bedroom (which I was using) to store all junk in. I couldn't do anything there - there were piles of plastic bags everywhere. It was awful.
I read the book The Magic of Tidying Up and started getting rid of things that I never use. It's really hard though because I have a husband and two kids. My husband tends to hold onto things, he didn't have much growing up. Well the kids are kids and they want as many toys as possible. I"m trying to teach them that they don't need what they don't play with. I just don't know how to get my husband to understand. He's not even materialistic, he just has a bunch of stuff like art things that he hasn't used for 5+ years.
The only couple things I’m guilty of are the laundry thing where I throw the dirty clothes back with the clean clothes, and a junk drawer....am I a minimalist and don’t even know it 🤔
I need to get rid of soo much stuff omg. I have hella clothes and I always feel like I don’t have anything to wear. I barely have space so I keep my stuff on the floor. I need to get rid of old stuff and buy things I actually need like socks and undies instead of sweaters and dresses etc. little lotions too
I can relate to this...hmmm I love my mom... I do.. but when I clean house I want to throw every clutter but since it’s not my stuff and mom don’t want to throw or give things but never used it for years and every year there will be more and more... before our house is very spacey ... now I don’t know where all those spaces are...oh yeah mom is addicted to plastic containers and now it’s piling going up with lots of things she wants to keep forever! 🤣 sorry ! It’s like I rant here ...
How do we find time to finish those art projects? My room is cluttered, yes, but my biggest issue is having a cluttered schedule. Just like my room, I don't have space for friends to hang out.
Ugh i feel like i am constantly decluttering. And its not even my stuff. It took me 3 years to declutter the basement at my grandfathers house and now everyone has new projects. Everytime i try to throw things out theres more. I just dont understand how to get rid of it so i can clean my mind to pay attention to my own stuff. I dont know what to do besides just move out and come over to slowly declutter their things
I'm the opposite, I throw away too much stuff that I end up needing :( on the contrary, I ALWAYS declutter my clothes but somehow it never ends and I keep finding things that I wanna get rid of
I am slowly getting rid of stuff. I started with purses last year. I would carry a purse for a month and at the end of the month if I hated carrying if it got donated. Usually the purse got donated. I also found out the type of purse I liked. I can not carry a tiny purse mostly because I just need reading glasses and they just dont fit in tiny purses. I am doing the same thing with my clothes, shoes etc.
i live in a 26foot trailer atm. It seems cluttered here. ive gone through and gotten rid of clothing we dont use, shoes, papers and "stuff". still feels crowded here. LOL. but i know that when we move into our apartment in a few weeks that what we actually have wont be much -at all- so i am currently just trying to be patient LOL.
A lot of these things sound like my girlfriend, only I'm the one constantly reorganizing and making room because she refuses to get rid of anything and keeps bringing more things in the house.
HOLY MOLY when she said, "your surroundings stress you out."

elo I live with my mum and she is a hoarder too!
Tammy B they def are!
This video came straight for my jugular 😭😭😭
For reallll like damn. Im so offended lmao
i just minimalized my closet last year and i think i can do it one more time.. best feeling ever.
I grew up with the same feeling of claustrophobia with how much stuff we had - completely understand and am sending you many 🤗
This was definitely my life! Minimalism is liberation...truly! I have people like you to thank!

This explains me, ohmygosh 😂😅
Cheryl Patel I relate to this so much. I’d rather feel like I’m over prepared for stuff than have to make a purchase.
So maybe you aren't a minimalist? That's OK too you know ;)
Oh my God, I am every single one. Aaagh! I haven't even got kids or pets to blame! But I've been living in the same apartment for 18 years. I never thought about the moving-things-to-get-to-other-things issue. It's so true! Thanks for these great tips!

XD
I had to stop at 2:07! Yes yes yes. On to the next vid, just hearing you describe my clutter is anxiety inducing😢
But, in reality, it's your clutter that's actually inducing the anxiety, not the video - the video is just a reminder... I wonder if it might be necessary to face that anxiety in order to actually eliminate the root cause... 🤔
And btw, I have a big problem with too much stuff and hoarding myself, so I know how you feel... And I haven't been able to deal with my stuff yet, but I feel I need to face the anxiety, rather than continue living in a cluttered mess that constantly stresses me out, just because I'm anxious about the prospect of dealing with it... 😔
Gosh you are so sorted at such a young age! Wise girl! U have enough! You do enough! You are enough! Amazing thought! Thank you
My mom was a mini hoarder and had a junk room so I can kind of relate on that.
Thank you for making them 🙏
You got me @ "feel like your always moving" omg thats so me help me 🤣
Your videos are great. I try to live a minimalist life and seeing your videos are very inspiring to me. Keep up the great work.
When you said sentimental stuff like going to the movies and keeping a ticket I hollered. That's so me *screams internally*. How did you know??? #allthefeels. I love your channel.
Literally watching all of your videos right now! I am now realizing the things I need to change in my own life.
My mom is basically a boarderline hoarder too and I’m in nursing school, and I love travelling, this girl gets me so much 🥰
true story for me: growing up in my mom’s house she was a huge hoarder. not like boxes everywhere but there wasn’t a bare piece of floor without a rug on it or a bare wall without something covering it. Junk everywhere; spilling out of drawers, etc. I used to get headaches everyday when I lived there. Moved out and no more headaches. I wouldn’t say I’m minimalist but I don’t own that many things. It’s crazy what it can do to your mind.
Wow a lot of these hit me right. I need to get rid of a lot! Good videos!
I feel similarities. I happened upon your videos for a reason. Thank you for your courage. ❤
I like what you said about office supplies, I'm retired but bought a pack of Halloween pencils at dollar store yesterday , they were so cute!!
I can't quite point out what makes your videos inspired me, but I do know one thing. You have such a beautiful and deep soul. You are really my inspiration. Thank you for just existing. ♡
What were you doing in my house? Lol! In process of purging. Blame the new moon. 😁
Another great video Janell👍🏼Thank you for sharing so much of yourself, you are so aspiring 😉💕
'I do enough' was very empowering coz at the back of my mind, I'm always thinking that I'm not doing enough..
The “rewashing piles of clean clothes” thing hit home, as well as buying fancy clothes that I’ll never wear.
Thank you!
I used to do that with my laundry I'm throwing all of my clothes out the window lol !! Kidding I am minimizing 👍 thanks for the video !
I started to feel attacked when you brought up the unfinished projects and problematic buying of organizers 😭 lmao
I used to keep movie tickets too...then a few months later I’d randomly find it on the closet floor to throw it in the trash 😂
Mail is a big one for me. I recycle most. But don't stay on top of the stuff with info on it that needs shredding. So end up with backlogs of stuff that needs attention, or even opening 😱
I have too much stuff. But I also shop from my storage instead of the store.
Pretty much the only thing that I need that I don't have is a dressy/professional winter coat and bookshelves.
every single point hut me... Definitely I have a lot of stuff... Thank you sooooo much for make me realise... ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have way too many unread books and unplayed/unfinished video games. I told myself I'd whittle my way through them all eventually but just looking at them all stresses me tf out. So I sucked it up, got rid of the ones I knew I'd never touch, and the ones I've kept I get rid of the second I'm done.
I'm really relieved that I don't have that much stuff according to your video!!!!
"Hobbies " stop it your killing me i have a drawer and boxes full 😂
I wouldn't say im a hoarder but i also wouldnt say im a minilmist... but i don't keep a lot of things that hold "sentimental value" but i like to keep tickets cause we go to movies and tavel a little more than average people. I have a specific jar for those things though and its kind of a cute little decorative piece
I have so many sentimental T shirts I dont wear, so Im getting them turned into a quilt!
Girl, you are so on point. Subscribing just because of that
Made me smile at the end. Looove
This is so inspiring and motivating! Thank youuu
Oh my gosh, I love you 💕 I’m going to declutter my apt right now. I have so much stuff I don’t need 😒
Yes, please let us know how you suggest one should get to a proper minimalist stage. I've thought about moving out with nothing (but essentials) and just running out and buying things as I need them. Do you think that would work?
I definitely enjoyed your video…great tips! 😇
hey my moms a hoarder too lol i’m so glad i’m moving out soon😂 i get really anxious just coming home from school and i never let friends come over
A few weeks ago I felt like I couldn't breathe freely in my apartment so I started to declutter and got rid of 3 moving boxes full of stuff. Still trying to sell some furniture because I hate just throwing it away but unfortunately I haven't been successful yet. But as soon as that'll be gone I'll be happier. Even now after the decluttering I feel like I can breathe again.
I was nodding so much watching this!!! 😂
Your video made me laugh and almost cry. I am totally watching your videos for more inspiration to minimize my life.
"I have enough, I do enough, I am enough" ~repeat~ I really need this thanks!
Omg junk room - you just sent me back in time when mother used my bedroom (which I was using) to store all junk in. I couldn't do anything there - there were piles of plastic bags everywhere. It was awful.
well i need stuff to fill the void. it's not like i'm in a relationship or anything or in a situation where i'm happy
Thank you! These are good thoughts.
My new favorite TH-camr. I watched one video now I’m addicted
I need to get rid of old stuff and buy things I actually need like socks and undies instead of sweaters and dresses etc. little lotions too
I would love to have a step by step decluttering guide!
When this video makes you realize you have TOO MUCH STUFF... lol ugh especially with kids. Wayyy too much.
How do we find time to finish those art projects? My room is cluttered, yes, but my biggest issue is having a cluttered schedule. Just like my room, I don't have space for friends to hang out.
I feel personally attacked. Lol but seriously all of these are me. You have opened my eyes D:
This sounds like you’re describing MY mom! Are we drawn to minimalism because of our upbringing? Anyways, so glad to have found minimalism!
I love all your plants! 😍 What's the name of the one on your rigth?
I would love to know some tips to get rid of things that you think you're going to use or wear for X occasion.
Wonderful insight, thank you !
OMG you described me over and over again! :-(
I had to stop watching after 1 minute cause I KNOW I apply to each and every thing you said. In that ONE MINUTE. 😂 Decluttering. Tomorrow. 😑
Free t shirts are hell ✌🏼🖤 (this and “we’re giving away shit just pay shipping” cheapperies)
A lot of these things sound like my girlfriend, only I'm the one constantly reorganizing and making room because she refuses to get rid of anything and keeps bringing more things in the house.
