- Learning how to hit a pickleball one-handed backhand stroke with correct technique is much easier when you break it down into smaller steps.
This allows you to learn each chunk of the one-handed backhand technique much better and as you finally connect them all together your backhand will flow much smoother.
Here's a brief overview of the whole process of the one-handed backhand pickleball drive.
1. The Grip - we'll use a very simple method for finding the right grip.
2. The Unit Turn - the unit turn will help you get into the right position before you even start moving your feet.
3. The Backswing - there is not much of a backswing in the one-handed backhand, but coiling the body is key.
4. The Uncoiling - this is where many players lose out on power so make sure you get this one right.
5. The Contact - we'll look at optimal contact and the role of the wrist.
6. The Follow-Through - specific key points of the follow-through will be covered.
Learning how to hit a one-handed backhand pickleball stroke is hopefully now a much easier process for you but do keep in mind that changing technique takes time.

Love the video. Happily subscribed. Thanks for the no nonsense, calm explanation.
Very helpful, thanks. What a stunning backdrop as well!
Great vid, thanks!
If you want more in depth instructional videos let me know in the comments!
I thought Andrew Tate is now teaching pickleball :D
That instructional video was very well done. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Great explanation and demonstration! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
GREAT VIDEO......Cross court VS down the line would be a good video as well using the backhand.
Thanks! Very few instructors address the one handed backhand. They all encourage the two handed. I’m a one handed because of my one handed tennis background but have been struggling a bit with it in pickleball. The 45 degree and depth comment helped and taking paddle back with paddle head up is different for me. I usually drop my paddle head and hit up for topspin like a tennis stroke but can never seem to get any power. Paddle head up may make a difference. I’ll try this!
You are welcome, I hope it helps!
Great, , good see step by step mechanics
Do you have videos on other shot mechanics
Great job Randy. You are looking good!
Thank you! Hope to see you guys when back in town.
That's a traditional background with full follow through that will leave you vulnerable for a quick return. Today's PB one handed backhand is more compact with the paddle stoping point in front of you...ready for the return.
They are all looking good when the ball travels at 25mph. Let do it when the ball going at 50mph
Yes. It’s a one handed backhand technique breakdown for a groundstroke drive on an ideal ball. In the video, there is a segment that mentioned that these are just guidelines and based on the situation the backswing, swing path and follow through and other factors will need to be adjusted based on the oncoming ball and your shot selection.
In future videos, I will dive more into specific scenarios. Thanks for watching.
This was a wonderfully helpful video.
In 12 hours and 40 minutes, I'll be out on the court giving it a try.
Why don't people play pickleball at 3:40 am?
I want to try it out now...
...grrrr.
How is your one handed backhand now?
Do you use a continental grip for that or the tennis backhand grip
Is he using a Western Grip for the backhand?
Hey! Which paddle are you using?
Thank you for breaking it down. It should improve my stroke. Question if you are closer to the next then would you not want more wrist action to get the ball over and across the net? For mid court to perhaps back line I can imagine the stroke you have demonstrated is the correct one. But closer to the net you probably need more of a flick of the wrist or two handed stroke to get the ball over. Am I wrong?
You are correct. The breakdown in the video is for a hard baseline drive. When you move into the court you will have to make adjustments, limiting your backswing, and your swing path through the ball to keep it in the court.
They are all looking good when the ball travels at 225mph. Let do it when the ball going at 50mph
Dude it's just beginning steps. You naturally speed this process up as you get higher rank.
You all act like hitting a pickleball requires the same techniques as hitting a a tennis ball!!!! It’s a plastic ball that makes a lot of noise!!!!!
Quality technique doesn’t hurt. But you are right that players can still have fun and play quite well with grips and stroke mechanics that I may not endorse.
