  • Raw Dog Food Diet Episode 1
    So you’ve done a little bit of research, heard people talking about a Raw Dog Food Diet, but you’re too bit scared to make the switch? If it all seems really complicated and expensive don’t worry. By the end of this blog you’ll have the simple 5 step BASE formula to take their food to the next level!
    Change is scary, and I know you love your dog a lot. Otherwise, you’d just be tossing some cheap supermarket store food in a bowl instead of reading this. So, here is a simple set of guidelines that will help clear up some questions you may have so you can move your dog to a safe, high-quality diet. After all, a healthy, happy pet lives longer, has less illness, and things like allergies, dental issues, and costly vet visits.
    So if you’re thinking of switching to raw, then I applaud you! And I admire that you’re doing your research first and not just jumping in … An unbalanced raw diet done wrong can harm your dog. But don’t worry about that … if you follow these rules, you won’t go wrong.
    The BARF Formula
    It’s a simple formula based on the 70/10/10/10 Model
    70% Meat
    10% Offal
    10% Bone
    10% Vegetables and Fruits.
    This is the MOST important thing to remember when creating your own Raw Meals!!

    Liver from ruminant animals is super high in copper. Some nutritionists recommend feeding high ruminant livers like beef at only 2 to 3 percent. First sign of copper storage is mildy elevated ALT. This happened go my dog. I reduced the copper and he is fine now.

    • @ChicaandCo
      @ChicaandCo  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thank you for highlighting the Copper levels in SOME livers. it is important to rotate through different types of offal as they have different nutrient values - for instance, Beef and Lamb Liver has an approximate Copper content of 9.8mg/100g, whereas Chicken Liver has a very low approximate level of around. 0.5mg/100gm. If Copper is of concern to your dog then Chicken and Pork livers would be a good option. As I mentioned in this video it is VITAL to rotate your meats and offals and not just stay to one type - this is how deficiencies occur and the diet becomes unbalanced. Thank you so much for your comment - please keep them coming this channel is a safe inclusive space for all dog lovers - no matter what style of feeding you choose!

      @ChicaandCo Rotation can definitely be helpful in preventing unbalances. I have been feeding homemade raw to my two dogs for over 13 years. They are now 15 years old and both are very healthy. Thank you for trying to educate people. I am always trying to learn more. For several years, I did feed mainly beef liver and kidney at 5 percent each and this seemed to be enough over time to raise their ALT levels. I now feed ruminant liver at only 2 percent and other livers closer to 5. I also feed a variety of other organs.

    Is there a similar recipe or diet plan for cats? With dangerous, life threatening issues associated with a host of pre-fab pet foods, I now have 2 dogs and 2 cats for whom I need to prepare meals. I have no idea where to start for my cats. Finding ingredients for my dogs is proving to be a challenge.

    As you’re formulating the percentage components, are you measure percentages based on weight? Also, if we’re feeding raw, how do we ensure the raw animal products are bacteria-free?

    • @ChicaandCo
      @ChicaandCo  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, you need to weigh your dog. From this calculate what 2 or 3 percent is and this is the amount to feed. Then you work out the weight of 70%, 10% etcetera. Check out the how much to feed your dog video for more detail.
      All food has bacteria, you just need to ensure the food is fresh, smells good and your utensils are all clean. Check out the Feeding Raw Safely Video for more on this.

      One of the main benefits of feeding raw meat is actually introducing healthy bacteria. We've been so programmed to feel raw meat is "contaminated" unless we cook it. Raw meat (and other foods) keep a healthy gut, from mouth to "exit". You will notice this because your dogs breath will no longer smell bad and you'll see smaller, healthy poops. As opposed to being bulky with fillers and inappropriate grains. Some poop talk, sorry but ever notice dog poop that's obviously sat on the ground for a long time and it's turned pale and almost like sawdust? This is from a poor quality commercial diet. I've seen almost white poops while out walking in my rural area. At the other end, the teeth will become cleaner. The bacteria raw meats provide create a natural balance in the mouth where plaque doesn't form into tartar, let alone build up. I have Great Danes so like to also use CoQ10 enzymes (capsules, opened up and sprinkled on meals) as it also loosens existing plaque, as well as great for heart health.
      So, bacteria is a good thing... Not to be mistaken for contaminates that are harmful for dogs or cats.
      I have to admit that while I've fed raw diets to my cats... Sadly I haven't found a way to afford to feed my Danes raw diets. Not in the part if the world I live (rural Canada) which sounds ironic given I live around farms. Yet to buy most of the protein sources, I can't even afford to to eat meat or fish myself most of the time. There used to be a couple local butchers where you could buy higher quality meat cheaper than the grocery stores but they have all gone out of business. I've found a company in my province that sells the meats/organs/bone mix for $60 for 20lbs but I still would have to drive over an hour to the closest town they ship to. So, living in Canada... the cost of the gas, plus shipping cost on top are ridiculous, especially for someone on a pension. I'm not giving up but it's hard to wrap my budget and brain around a raw diet for dogs over 170lbs. Frustrating! I'd happily do without to provide it to my dogs.

      @@leianehiltz2486 some excellent points! I love that you know what COQ10 is! You've given me a great idea for a new video..... how to feed giant breed dogs without giant budgets! Thank you for your comments, we hope that by bringing qualified animal nutrition advice, tips and tricks more and more people will have healthy and happy pets!

      @ChicaandCo Happy to add a point or 2. I'd absolutely love some ideas that would help make it possible for me to apply it to the giants. Spent my life working to extend quality and quantity of life. Especially now as I'm encountering my 1st severe environmental allergy rescue Boy. Throwing all I know at healing him vs the hugely expensive and dangerous veterinary approach (apoquel ÷ antibiotics= high risk of cancer as well as $900/month for the drugs. The companionship of pets should never be a privilege of just the well to do. I've been volunteer for over 30yrs now and much of that's been helping others keep their pets with a little education and support. Now the shoes on the other foot

    I have a male 90lbs Doberman want to get off kibble I cook for him also but I just want to start raw feeding he loves it anyways I just don’t know the amount I should be feeding him for his size and do the veggies need to b cooked?

    • @ChicaandCo
      @ChicaandCo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For adult dogs over 18 months they should be eating appropriately 2% to 4% of their current body weight. 90lbs or 40 kilos should be eating around 28 ounces or 800gm of food. This is applicable to raw food only, kibble quantities vary greatly depending on the quality. Generally you need to feed more kibble than raw, but follow the manufacturer recommended quantity. If you have a super active dog, aim for 4%, a couch potato 2%. Keep an eye out for the next video, it's about this very topic and I go into much more detail!

    What about including iodine?

    • @ChicaandCo
      @ChicaandCo  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi @In9475 high levels of iodine is found naturally in green leafy vegetables, beef liver or if you feel that your dog has an iodine deficiency after doing bloodwork you can supplement with seaweed or kelp. Hope this helps.

    This seems scary. Switching to a raw diet would be to up their level of health, not make them sick. I guess what I would need are recipes I could shop for and feed my dogs. I have a 9-month old Boston Terrier weighing 18-pounds. My other dog has kidney disease and is stuck eating commercially prepared kidney function kibble.

      I’m planning on a new pup sometime this year, I find it scary as well, I need actual recipes and amounts to get started, I have not seen anyone offering that. Also do you grind up the food and bone like farmers fresh food or do they just eat it like that . How many times a day do they eat it? Do you have to run to market daily or do you freeze ? Until I find anwser to understand really what I’m doing I’m afraid of not doing right by a new dog uh. I’ve watched many videos and still not really clear .
