On the subject of toiletries specifically for woman - bring tampons. You can find lots of different types of pads but tampons are nearly non-existent. So if you are particularly attached to specific brand bring enough supplies for the amount of time you are in China for. I live in a 3rd tier city so I don't know if tampons are more plentiful in 1st tier cities (Beijing, Shanghai) or not.
I will be visiting China for the first time next Tuesday (Chengdu and Shanghai). Where does one obtain "food poisoning pills" from? Is there an Over The Counter version?
Good to know you continuing your good life in gz. I am living in shenzhen and now in Germany at present. Maybe we can hangout someday when you are available. post more videos, I like your comments, keep it up.
Apparently my experience in China is different... all I really need to worry about is air sickness--to and fro. (BARF) oh yeah, and they also have Chinese Medicine if you will take the trouble to buy prescription herbs, boil them in water, then drink the brew. Last of all, the smog. Most Chinese are used to it but I always end up with lead in my lungs after a month in Beijing.
You two are simply wonderful! Informative, engaging and inspiring. I'm moving to Beijing in Sept to teach math at an offshore school and my bf would like to do some business there. Thank you so much for creating this talk-blog! You rule. Peace.
Hey Guys, thanks for all the videos. I'm moving to Guangzhou (I was happy to hear you guys mention it specifically since it seems like Guangzhou doesn't have much of a presence on youtube - except for the football team). The advice has been really helpful, but I've tried looking around for food poisoning pills but I can't find them anywhere. I was just wondering if you had any recommendations for what pills to get.
very informative. I advice you to write the text of "these things" in the video everytime you say it, to stress your points better. it could be more clearly to understand while watch it :)
nice video guys. However, I just came back from Shenzhen, China. Most of the items that you're saying that you won't find in this country, you can get them at Walmart. And of course I am talking about Walmart's in China. I'm very surprised that you couldn't have access to these things....
sweet, im going to qingdao up north . but am about a couple hours from san diego now living in hesperia the high desert an hour north of orange county . cheers ! :)
I have been in China for a total of 14 months and never had food poisoning and I have been from east to South north and west and eat the same as normal Chinese.
You mentioned deodorant. I use organic coconut oil from head to toe. Takes care of practically everything plus all the other health benefits that come with it. I've gone deodorant free for three straight years now. Lol.
i plan to move to china soon so this is great advise thank you so much and i have 2 question first are you two brothers and seconed do you guys live in china.
I'd recommend the Charles Schwab debit card, no atm fees or transaction fees on any ATM. I used it in China and HK for 6 months, no fees no matter what bank atm I used
I would have liked this video a lot more if you had used a lapel/personal mic instead of bouncing your voice off of several surfaces along with the direct path from mouth to mic. Audio is usually quite important in video presentations. I hope you learned that lesson with this video. When in doubt, use a personal mic. Always be in doubt, and have windscreens for the mics handy. Good journey.
Hey Krissy, there are 3 ways that we've used to transfer money out of China. 1. Wire transfer from Chinese bank to US bank - Obviously not as straight forward as it sounds - Almost ALWAYS takes at least 5 days - Crazy paperwork due to Chinese banking laws - Let them mess up one English to Chinese to English translation and you're money going to be held by the US bank or eventually sent back 2. Chinese PayPal to US PayPal transfer You need to set up a PayPal account in China and link it to your Chinese bank account and then create another PayPal account (different email address) and link that to your US bank account. That way you basically transfer funds to yourself between the two accounts and once it hits the US PayPal push it from there to your US bank account. - Withdrawal from Chinese bank account to US PayPal is instant - Sometimes takes 3 days or so hit US bank account - PayPal fees are high - Not sure what the limits are but we've transferred over $1k at a time - Less hassle than going to bank 3. Uphold Financial Services They basically perform mostly instant international transactions for free. Just getting started with them but we're hearing good things. Check them out: uphold.com/
You can get pretty much everything on Taobao or jingdong. One interesting thing I'm Chinese and live in the states now, I don't feel anything different in the toothpaste! Lol.
I'm leaving to China tomorrow from Australia. I'm only going for 10 days but are food poisoning pills really necessary even after getting a typhoid shot from the doctor? The trip is organised by a travel agent and from the itinerary it seems we're eating at high end restaurants. We're only visiting Beijing and Shanghai as well. Anyway great video guys!
nice video guy btw what brand of food poisoning pills did you guys buy? I'm headed to china in 2wks and don't want to regretting anything. Thanks guys!
Hey guys.. I know it's an old video.. I hope you're still around cuz I do have a question.. I know google is banned in china.. I don't have an I phone I have an android phone.. so Would it be able to work just fine? Or should I get an I phone?? By the way I'm not gonna be living there I just want to go on a business trip for a week or so..
That's mostly for the street BBQ places that you need to watch out for that. More established restaurants you should be fine. -Luke P.S. Street BBQ is great!
Speak of buying deodorant in China, in many major cities, you should look for a shop called Watsons, which is a Hong Kong based company. This is where you definitely can find and buy deodorant. But still, you might not find as much variety of deodorants as you wish.
Are you guys still in China? I you still sourcing products in China for sale in USA? Are you still doing KIck Starter. Are you still doing a club for investors? I am coming to Wuhan China to teach at the University there in September.
Good advice, especially about the food poisoning pills. (God I wish I had those last time I was there). However, as far as some lotions and tooth pastes I haven't found an issue getting the same or equivalent stuff I use in the US, in China. Maybe I just am lucky.
YOu can buy a vitamin form of active charcoal over the counter, that will absorb most food poisoning. No real side effects, unlike the DRUGS from your MD
I am not sure, I am considering it. Where are you located, will you help get a Z visa or just use tourist visa? What qualifications do you need? Are they firm? When do you hire, until you fill a spot or only beginning of school? What is the pay and what benefits are included(housing, utilities, etc)? Do you treat teachers well?
I was on chinese-forums recently and I read that there are electronics stores/stalls that can unlock your phone (iphone5s in my case) for you- I was wondering if this is still true
Have you guys ever heard of melaleuca? It's an online shopping club and they have two manufactures in China. You can buy deodorant, vitamins, cleaners, shampoos, moisturizers, toothpaste etc. and it's shipped yo you. Let me know if you're interested. Would skype or message to answer questions (also have WeChat).
i will tell you something funny that happening here in the state's as well, I've seen a lot more spray over handheld. Hmm another business opp a vit store, but i thought china had a lot of that? Umm wth i should just open up a drugstore at this rate next to my tall clothing store.
What brand of food poisoning meds did you bring? I see several listed and would be disappointed if I had bought an inferior brand. Sorry, I didn't search all the comments so I apologize in advance for repeating
You've provided great content in many of your videos thus far, but something occurred to me as I watched this particular installment. Are you guys doing advertising/marketing for Apple? If not, then kindly remove the cheap-Chinese-manufactured-Apple-laptop from front & center in the screen. Also... get appropriate microphones for when you do your indoor video productions. The audio is "off mic" in this video (requiring viewers to crank their volumes up to MAX to hear your discourse on the subject). Carry on...
Pepto Bismol is a prophylactic for pre-exposure (per the CDC), immodium, and I also recommend activated charcoal pills to strategically remove 'everything' from your digestive tract in the event of an 'encounter' (you do NOT use them indiscriminately!). But the pre-0ccupation with food poisoning is nonsensical. Visit the POPULAR vendors (it will be obvious) and observe the hygiene of street food vendors before buying - like at a State Fair in the US - and employ a bit of common sense and you will be fine. The histrionics regarding food poisoning is exactly that! I've been here for 3.5 years and have had NO problems.
The height thing is a crock. Deodorant thing only for speed sticks. Its plentiful (or available as are vitamins, milk, cheese and the like) unless you live in the Himalayas or a desert. Where the hell are you two dumbos living? Toothpaste? Same as home. The whole video is a farce
Day Dreamer Largely agreed!!! While toothpaste (Crest and Colgate) is indeed COMMON and VERY reasonably priced, cheap plastic razors seem non-existent (but even more exorbitantly priced (than in the US) Western 'name brand' razors are available. Bring the cheap blue razors from home. Deodorant/antiperspirant - even in stores that 'cater' to expats such as Carrefour or Metro - is rare at best. There is an 'unusual'(to be polite) deodorant, but no anti-perpirant.Bring it. You might also bring a small amount of naproxyn, Pepto Bismal, benedryl, chloroseptic, and a basic antihistamine simply to dry up symptomatic sniffles (aside from benedryl). And this 'we are all going to die from food poisoning' obsessive hysteria...where in hell are you guys eating???? KFC? If you simply wash ALL food prior to eating you should not have a problem. frequent the BUSY local establishments and you will be fine. Again, a few Pepto Bismal for 'prophylactic' protection (per the CDC) as a preventative measure if you anticipate exploring street food, and a few activated charcoal pills can resolve any issue. But simple care largely eliminates the problem. One of the larger sources of confusion for expats will be the separation of what we call drug stores in the West from the cosmetic sections. They are typically sold in different stores in China and not simply in separate sections of a department store. And you had better have a friend who can read Chinese to frequent the 'drug' stores! As far as their dietary recommendations - in a word - anecdotal faddist Nonsense. ALL vitamins are readily available in a complete balance whole food plant based low fat low sugar regimen which is EASILY and CHEAPLY available by cooking vegies easily sourced at neighborhood wet markets. See the work of Caldwell Esselstyn, T. Colin Campbell, John McDougall and the research summaries at NutritionFacts. org. The ONLY regimen PROVEN and vetted tpo prevent, arrest and reverse modern degenerative diseases including terminal heart disease. No faddist hype. (See Make Yourself Heart Attack Proof by C. Esselstyn here on TH-cam) DO NOT TAKE isolate d or multivitamins. Read the published research linked in the pertinent NutritionFacts.org research summaries regarding vitamins. The ONLY vitamins you need are B12 and vitamin D. The fact is that eating well and healthily in China is EASY and CHEAP (and as I do not eat meat, eggs, dairy or oil, I can speak from experience!) With simply a rice cooker (and a slow cooker for beans if you are Really fancy) one can eat great with the plethora of readily available fresh green leafy veggies and fruit. Fruit 'stands' are everywhere along the neighborhood streets and wet markets (think 'farmer's markets') are in every neighborhood. Note, the wet markets are often 'hidden' in a large center section of building complexes where the perimeter is dominated by small shops, where the market is accessed down a long corridor leading to the center section of the building. I know, it sounds confusing, but when you find them, you will understand. Ask for help - they are worth it! Plus, milk is EVERY freaking where - unfortunately. Most is high temp pasteurized and does not require refrigeration. A Western marketing joke pulled on a lactose intolerant Asian population. Dairy is NOT a good source of calcium and actually leads to the leeching of calcium from the bones and muscles, as well as being a primary source of the carcinogen casein. But hey, don't lisen to me, review the work above (primarily T. Colin Campbell's "Animal Protein - Milk and Dairy - Cause Cancer" available here on TH-cam.) Milk is great for babies of the same species. Plenty of calcium is available in whole dark green leafy veggies. And fresh spinach is freaking CHEAP in the wet markets here. Food poisoning....LOL! Having been here 2 years and I have had one small but as a result of eating raw vegies. Bring a handful of activated charcoal tablets in the event of gastrointestinal distress. Forget the rest. Pepto Bismal, per the CDC, is effective as a preventative prophylactic IF you are planning to eat a bunch of street food. Forget your US phone. Period. Get a Chinese compatible DUAL SIM phone and use one SIM for the phone/voice service and the other SIM for data (preferably from China Unicom). My suggestion if you want more than a bare bones phone, save money and get a Chinese version of the ASUS zenfone2 or OnePlusOne. While Western Internet speeds may be faster, the fact is that the US is a 3rd world country in terms of cellular.

BOA debit card. Thank you!!
Cometita Blin Blin Not anymore! That has changed. You should be using a Charles Schwab card now.
Deodorant can be found at Quchenshi(屈臣氏) or other cosmetic store, around 29-39yuan/bottle.
Thats the first good news I've heard about having a Bank of America account internationally like EVER.
I'd recommend the Charles Schwab debit card, no atm fees or transaction fees on any ATM. I used it in China and HK for 6 months, no fees no matter what bank atm I used

You don't need a visa to stay in Hong Kong less than 90 days.......correct?
If you're an American... correct.
Enter China most countries don't need a visa to visit Hong Kong. I am from the Caribbean and I don't require one.
Dark green veg has a lot of calcium
Whatever you forget at the states, you can find them on Chinese Amazon Taobao.

Hey guys.. I know it's an old video.. I hope you're still around cuz I do have a question.. I know google is banned in china.. I don't have an I phone I have an android phone.. so Would it be able to work just fine? Or should I get an I phone?? By the way I'm not gonna be living there I just want to go on a business trip for a week or so..
have you encountered the sewer oil scandal? Im scared to order anything fried in china lol
That's mostly for the street BBQ places that you need to watch out for that.
More established restaurants you should be fine.
-Luke
P.S. Street BBQ is great!
What do you guys mean by food poisoning pills? Immodium? Can you name a brand?
I would count on Immodium and accompany those with Pepcid AC and Gas X. When in doubt, carry it all. Lol.
Speak of buying deodorant in China, in many major cities, you should look for a shop called Watsons, which is a Hong Kong based company. This is where you definitely can find and buy deodorant.

Is there anybody interested in teaching position in China? I can help, we need teachers here.
Do you treat teachers well?

strong antibiotics
OMG! Too much rambling aimless chat. Your list should take 5 minutes tops to cover. Nice echo recoding in the living room.
How can you bring large amounts of anything to China? ? I mean Airport will only allow what fits in a ziploc bag
+DonD512 You can bring as much as you want up to the import limit in your checked luggage.
From Nanning, Guangxi - You didn't mention spices for cooking American food. They are extremely difficult to find here. Taco seasoning, what's that?
BOA.. I got that
Hong Kong is not China? You could get into big trouble saying that.
i will tell you something funny that happening here in the state's as well, I've seen a lot more spray over handheld. Hmm another business opp a vit store, but i thought china had a lot of that? Umm wth i should just open up a drugstore at this rate next to my tall clothing store.
What do you mean by an unlocked phone?
That it is not courier locked aka works only with the sim inside

Chinese people don't wear deodorant really, people rarely have strong BO.
