Hi Adam. it pleased me what you have pointed out to be something difficult to overcome. On many clips mechanics use an impact wrench to undo that NASTY nut on top.therefore few people got it to undo it WITHOUT THAT impact wrench. thank you. ps: no! too much talking never hurts Larry!
if anyone needs more clearance away from the top strut 22MM nut , , Lowes also sells a hollow pass through 3 inch extension as well (1/2" DR) by Kobalt extreme ....I hope this will help !
I bought Proxxon 23810 Slim-Line Double Box End Wrench Set with 75 Degree Offset Heads with Holder on Amazon worked great for the large nut but the Koni 11mm hold down nut is an odd size it seems to be a little smaller than 11mm and every socket and wrench I have was a sloppy fit, so If you have adjustable Koni Yellow shocks the best solution is a 11mm 6 point socket, a 12 point can and will round off the 11mm hold down nut if you torque too hard (don't ask how I know) and then you're screwed. I contacted Koni to verify the size after the fact and they said 11mm but it's the smallest 11mm I've seen...more like 10.5mm a lot of play there. Not very confidence inspiring to say the least. Adam... Very well done video. BTW, I love the ride of the Koni just perfect but that 11mm nut is a design (flaw)? IMO
Thanks for posting Adam! Don't like buying all the specialty "single" use tools, or worse yet hearing,, "dealer only crap",, Not sure if I would have thought of using a spark plug socket, Perfect Thanks!
Amazon sells a half height top washer thay closes that gap up. I'm sure a small gap is normal but not mine with a 3/4 inch gap. It mashed that cup to a pulp from going over bumps and hammering up and down.
Adam, Good tip on the Lowes Cobalt ratchet/socket but couldn't quite understand what exactly you called it? Guess I'll have to go check it out as that set-up would cover both styles (and more) Also, Koni is pronounced Co-Knee not Connie must be from the east coast? Basten or Jersy? haha Keep makin' the good videos
60 degree angled box wrench will also work. That's what I used when I did mine. It was like $15 at harbor freight and comes with 8 wrenches all different sizes.
I don't suggest impact at least don't use it for tightening, very likely you'll damage strut bearing. Stuck with hand tools on this unless you want to do it over.
Yes, it necessary to go thru what doesn't work cuz otherwise us with little time and money don't have to waste time and money trying tools that might work but won't. Like the 45° wrench, I was about to buy that thinking it might work... This is a very valuable video!
great video. went out and bought the kit from lowes and after a good fight, got the job done. thank you very much

Nice video, my 99.5 jetta had a 21mm nut. I used the 13/16th spark plug socket and 7mm allen wrench. Worked perfectly. Thank-you

Thanks, I have Koni Red on my 2000 Beetle, struts are fine, need to freshen up my boot and bearing especially on my drivers side.
Thank you so much. This was blowing my mind
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Made my day man thanks
I have a 1/2 inch gap between the tower and strut mount. I recently replaced the front suspension just wondering if thats normal
Sione F it's normal just make sure the gap isn't to big
Amazon sells a half height top washer thay closes that gap up. I'm sure a small gap is normal but not mine with a 3/4 inch gap.
It mashed that cup to a pulp from going over bumps and hammering up and down.
Huge thanks man!
Good info bro. Greatly appreciated
Awesome information!
Thanks, you nailed it.
I'm very interested to know more about the "L wrench". Can you share the brand and possible sources?
Did VW put the same front suspension in all MK4 Golf models? I have a V5 but can only get a used suspension leg from a 1.6 :(
I used the stock rate springs. I did notice the car sat a little higher after I changed the springs and shocks.
GREAT VIDEO
What size Is the Allen key we heard the size of the socket 20 times in one video
7mm
After extensive search, I haven't been able to find a pass-thru socket in 21mm or 22mm size. Very frustrating...

pass through socket
lol..I guess I'm not the only one hearing Connie,,hahaha
how do you get to the top nut on the rear shock
would a 75 degree 21mm wrench work?
60 degree angled box wrench will also work. That's what I used when I did mine. It was like $15 at harbor freight and comes with 8 wrenches all different sizes.
13/16" sockets are too small for some shock nuts. Perhaps work with factory ones.
I just put a gas torch on the socket spanner and bend it to 90 degrees
Thank you
thank you man! :D
I used the socket and Allen key and the Allen key snapped inside anyone help me out plz what can I do now?
gracias muy descriptivo
There is a cheap set of offset wrenches on Amazon.
an electric impact wrench will do it in a second
I don't suggest impact at least don't use it for tightening, very likely you'll damage strut bearing. Stuck with hand tools on this unless you want to do it over.
Dude I wanted to watch a video about how to take it apart, not what tools to use
You didnt remove anything actually. You know that, right?
Jujubokar Of course not, he was done lol he's showing HOW he did it. He knows we all already know how to turn a wrench lol
Pain in the ass cant find that dumb socket.
Way to much time talking about what won't work. Just take the strut off

@@bassmunk I agree, other videos don't tell you how to keep it from spinning while you crack the nut. Well, they used an impact gun, maybe that helps.
