A merchant can travel at any place, at any time. Their business can be related to clothing, materials, Tonics, spices and many other variety of goods. So no, he’s not a farmer.

According to some recent dialogues, baraka was formally one of Sindel's troops. He became a merchant when he retired. And after all of that service to Outworld, he got thrown out by Sindel when he caught Tarkat. Surprised he didn't turn against the empire after how sindel treated him.
If that’s true it shows why he doesn’t hold a grudge against everyone. He will understand what is necessary to protect the throne and people he once swore to guard.
He knows how Tarkat can take families after all his whole family died of Tarkat and only he survived so yeah poor lad knows and that's why he leads trying to help the others.

Despite his massive downgrade into his very being. Used to be a part of a very powerful demonic race to being a victim of a horrifying disease. Baraka has had a huge character comeback. I’m so glad he actually has a significant role & place in the story rather than just being an enemy ally & jobber. Despite mk1’s MANY FLAWS. This was not one of them. They actually went in the right direction with this one.
