      True. The torpedoes aren't actually launched from the tubes; they're ejected by high-pressure air, then their propellers start. Over 20kts of speed will push the torps back into the tubes and jam the tubes up.

      I am not sure about the physics of the game model, but it was probably more to do with that hit he too earlier. An impact like that would have knocked the tubes out of alignment causing the weapon to jam and not shoot.

    • @Seris.
      @Seris. 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Michael Grimm Being hit in the bow doesn't actually impair you from launching torpedoes unless they damage your tubes which is a separate "module/room" I don't know what to call it. The reason for the tubes was indeed the speed he was going at.

    "And that's how WW3 started, my mutated grandchildren... all due to a single submarine commander."

    • @imba1426
      @imba1426 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Actually, WW3 could have started if not for a russian submarine. The story was russian made a new solar radar to detect missiles but it is NEW. The used it and found out that a missile is coming in from the US and russian commanders ordered the submarine to counterattack. The commander of the submarine refuse to execute order because he thought that US wont start a WW3 with a single missile. It was later found out that the radar detected missile was actually a faulty detect of the the radioactive signal by the sunrise. And that is how WW3 is dodged by a russian submarine. Do Google it for a more factual data :)

    • @shp27493
      @shp27493 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@imba1426 actually, you're wrong. The radar malfunctioned and the operator realized it. The operator didn’t report the missile because he realized USA would not attack USSR with 5(not 1, 5 missiles were detected falsely) missiles only.
      The incident you are talking about happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis. A soviet submarine carrying a Nuclear warhead tipped torpedo was intercepted and ordered to surface by US navy ships. The submarine commanders (Flotila commander, submarine captain and a political officer) voted on whether to fire that torpedo or not and finally decided to not fire and radio Moscow first. That's how the world was saved two times in two decades.

  • @Mirr0r_man
    @Mirr0r_man 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Jingles - the reason you lost the torpedo tubes has nothing to do with the torpedo damage you took earlier - it would have happened anyway (even if you had been undamaged) because you cannot open your torpedo tube doors and fire at high speed - you need to be down to below 20 knots to fire - not running at flank!

    • @Quick_Bisquick
      @Quick_Bisquick 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Grimm I meant like reloading in the spec ops mission you have to load the seals and it only allows for 4 torpedoes (the one's in the tubes) to be loaded. jingle's loads a Moss when he already had a torp in the tube.

    • @MIkegrimm2
      @MIkegrimm2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess that just a game mechanics thing, Normally you don't put Seals out from the torpedo tube only. The preferred method is via the FWD escape hatch, that way you can get at least 2 seals out at a time.

    • @Quick_Bisquick
      @Quick_Bisquick 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael Grimm The game has the seal team take up 22 slots so you only have 4 weapon slots those being the tubes when you get to the circle it just auto realeses the team with no animation if he had the team load then you would see the icon in the plank space of the stores tab. My justification of loosing all weapons is the team bunks in the weapons bay so they can't haul the weapons.

    A little tip to avoid torpedo : "You don't want to have the same depth as the torpedoes. If the torpedo is shallow go deep, if the torpedo is deep go shallow. If the torpedo lock on to you drop noise maker and when the torpedo do a countermeasure(where the torpedo will peel to the side and come back around) you want to have change your depth, either go shallow or deep. And don't worry about making cavitation when dodging torpedo because they know you're there. Also dodging torpedo is all about those dodging preparation long before shit hits the fan.

      @@SaltiDawg2008 when a submarine torpedo tube fires, it floods with water from both the door and the water ram, however, when moving at high speed, the force of the ocean water will overpower the water ram, causing damage to the tube, making it inoperable; lower the speed, less pressure from the water flowing into the tube from the outside in
      it may also cause damage to the torpedo tube door, which would render it impossible to use, as there's an interlock to keep the breach door from opening if the muzzle is open

    The thing I like about submarine combat is that it’s a lot like how I imagine space combat would be.
    * You’re sealed inside a pressurized sardine can that cannot under any circumstances be allowed to open, on pain of horrible death.
    * You can’t see anything. Your only option for determining what is outside is by interpreting the various signals picked up by your equipment and hoping you get it right.

    Thumbs up so that JIngles can see this! We must provide our gnome overlord the power of knowledge!
    I've had this game for a couple weeks too, Jingles, and I've gone to the trouble of making a big note page that I can quickly reference during engagements with what I consider to be very important information.
    Firstly: Cavitation
    I have a list of cavitation speeds relative to helm bells that I've checked out myself, and verified against a few other people (TH-camrs, forums, etc.)
    Cavitation occers:
    -@10kts if above 100ft
    -@20kts if above 300ft
    -@26kts if above 450ft
    -@33kts if above 560ft
    Cavitation is pretty simple. Don't do it. Unless your life depends on it, then do it. Speed > Stealth when dodging fish. Whip off that scarf and crank the torpedo beat if you've got wake-chasers!
    Secondly: Signiature #'s
    That weird list of numbers beside your waterfall display in the target ID page actually are pretty important, but they aren't super intuitive.
    Ownship:
    This section is an estimate of the sensitivity of your sensors vs the contact/target you are currently prosecuting. Your active bow sonar is top, your passive on-board sensors are second, and your towed array is listed third. Any negative numbers mean that this sensor is not providing any information about your target (no feed), while positive numbers are (feed strength). You can use this against your target's relative bearing to decide for yourself how far away your target is, without waiting for your sonar team to do it for you. For example, if the target appears to be moving slowly on your tracking map, but the signal is very high, then chances are, he's very close to you. Conversely, if the target is moving very quickly, but the signal is weak, then chances are he is very far away. Once you get used to tracking signal strengths over your array of sensors, you can begin to make educated guesses about things. For example, if you are cruising along at 300ft, just above a 310ft layer at5 kts, your towed array might have arced below the layer. When you pick up a contact, you can use the sensitivity of your onboard passives (above the layer) against your towed array (below the layer) to decide on which side of the layer your target is on, and how best to maneuver against him.
    Target:
    This is an estimation of the sensitivity of your enemy's sensor abilities. THIS IS CONTINGENT ON THE CLASSIFICATION YOU GIVE THE TARGET. IF YOU PICK THE WRONG ONE, YOU COULD BE GROSSLY OVER OR UNDERESTIMATING THEIR ABILITIES TO DETECT YOU. So don't be a silly goose, get this one right lol Take the time to gather as much info about a target as you can! Same as above, Active sensors are top, onboard passive are second, and towed arrays are bottom. Some ships/boats may not possess a towed array, or any subsurface detection gear at all, and because this changes depending on how you classify the target, again, take the time to get it right, and don't trust a semi-solid guess. ***I'm not too sure about the following, as this part has been the hardest for me to verify thus far, but*** any negative values in these fields mean that you are effectively invisible to that sensor. Anything between 0-10 means that while this sensor cannot detect you, it can be used to supplement any sensor powerful enough that can, helping the enemy zero your location faster. Anything with a value above 10 can and probably already has located you.
    Additionally, some small reminders!
    -No torpedoes over 20 kts! >:(
    -Always retract masts before you dive, don't be that guy. Everyone will laugh at your "entering port steam of shame" with your bent-backwards masts.
    -Water is pumped out easier the higher you go, but you don't necessarily need to surface to clear a compartment. I successfully controlled two flooding compartments at once at 100ft. You don't sink, and you don't attract any more angry Russians. It's a win-win.
    -Being detected by active sonar is contingent upon a few variables. LIke every other sensor, ducts, layers, ambient noise, and other environmental can affect how easily you are detected. But active sonars in particular can be affected by your aspect in relation to the active emitter. If you are presenting a broadside, you will have a detection modifier of 0. If the enemy sonar has a value of 10 or higher and he pings, he will see you. If you are bow-stern onto him (or offering as small a profile as possible to the emitter, you can cut down on his return by as much as 3/4s. If he has an active value of 20, your profile can reduce that to 5, which is well below the detection threshold of 10, keeping you safe.
    This is all information I've gathered watching TH-camrs like Jive Turkey (#crew) and others, as well as surfing forums and other sources online, and then verified myself by actually using the data. I can't take credit for finding all of this out, but I certainly trust it, and hopefully, it will help you out too!
    Good luck, Jingles! I'm looking forward to more Cold Waters content!

    A Few Tips:
    1) Noisemaker decoys and Knuckles only work if they're between you and the torpedo tracking you (their tracking you is indicated by the yellow light w/ torpedo symbol in top right of UI).
    2) Don't forget to change the weapon presets before you launch. Notably the search depth for torpedoes (Same/Shallow/Deep), but also the two others (active/passive seeker & search pattern after active). The torpedo won't go to the preset search depth until it reaches it's activation point, and torpedoes have limited vertical angles which they will travel or home at.
    3) Repairs, pumps, reloads, etc stop when you set Ultra Quiet conditions.
    4) As mentioned elsewhere, you need to be under 20 knots to safely launch torpedoes, else they'll jam in the tube & it can't be fixed (in campaign) until you return to port for repairs. Missiles to be launched at 5kts &

    Watch Captain Cavitation (EnterElysium). It fun to watch, not for his skill, but his blunders and still managing to pull his ass out (most of the time). Between frequent cavitations (lighting up his sub) to evading his on torps, he seams to (most of the time) pull off some fantastic maneuvers (like right out of a Hollywood movie) and generally survive.
    He is simultaneous the best and worst SSN captain in the navy.

    Jingles--
    Thanks for an interesting and fun review. Looking forward to more. I own COLD WATERS and am very pleased with how well it conveys the sense of the command decision cycle of modern submarine combat. You as the player focus on the tactics rather than juggling every watch station on the boat.
    I highly recommend COLD WATERS if you want to have a sense of the the commanders' thought process and let the crew work the stations. If you are interested in that style of play, then this game will be worth the cost to you. And you can always help to speed up Classification by working the Signature Tab and by maneuvering the boat to minimize the time to develop the TMA, etc.
    If you want to micromanage ever station, and immerse yourself in each watch station, this may disappoint. But no Sub Commander I know works every station.
    Also want to complement you on knowing when to attempt to break contact and minimize your signature by attempting to control cavitation. On to many of the COLD WATER videos I've watched the player go AHEAD FLANK the whole game and then wonders why he cant get a TMA and why he is constantly being dropped on by Helos/Aircraft or fired on by unseen platforms. You have put together a great primer on basic sub tactics.
    You've probably already noticed the many comments regarding the jamming of your tubes. You violated the launch maximum speed of to Knots.

    @16:02 With a sinking ship right next to you I would be less concerned with cavitation and more concerned with the radar return you just gave every enemy ship in the area by breaching the water with your sail. when your that shallow you should really control dives using the subs buoyancy.

    After much research, discussion and experimentation, the question which has been on absolutely nobody's lips since Cold Waters first came out, has finally been answered.
    In The Hunt for Red October, Captain Ramius ordered Ryan to steer the RH directly at the torpedo fired by the Alpha. The torpedo hit the RH, but didn't detonate as it hadn't ran far enough to arm. Would this work in Cold Waters..?
    NOPE, having got to within less than 1kyds of an Alpha, we fired at almost exactly the same time. I activated my torp immediately, but the Alpha didn't. Even though both Soviet torpedoes hit me while still inactive, they blew the shi... they caused sufficient damage to kill my sub.
    At least the Alpha was killed by my Mk48, so that was something.

    Jingles, good to see you branching out once again. I got to have a chat with the Killerfish developers (Paul and Nils) on the Steam discussion forums in January; I asked about additional improvements to Atlantic Fleet (obviously before knowledge of CW releasing was out). While they were not going to do any additional work on AF due to the next game taking all their time (CW), they did say that using the latest game engine from Cold Waters would allow them to go back to WW2 in the future, perhaps Pacific or Atlantic redux.
    Thought you would like to know.

    Jingles, the problem with your torpedo tubes malfunctioning was due to your speed. You were going too fast to safely open the tube doors and fire the weapons. Slow down to below 20 knots and you're fine :)
