I gotta say, this must be my favourite video yet from you guys in terms of photography and cinematography. A lot of these shots I would be happy to hang up on my wall!
ISO 80 at 44MP is insane for doing landscape and architecture and something that I would really use. Also the Tirpitz was a sister German battleship to the Bismark and was sank by a British Bombing raid, they dropped a bunch of 12,000 lbs bombs to hit it and sink it.
My budget is very limited compared to this camera, but I feel like I need it some time, whether it be this year or five years from now. The video specs in particular are great for me, not to mention the photo quality.
If I was interested in FF, this would definitely be on my short list . Having the L-mount is so much better than a proprietary mount. I love MFT and the ability to swap first-party lenses across bodies. Vendor lock-in is driving me a bit crazy on many fronts, not just cameras. Stay warm!
I have been planning to upgrade to the Z8, but this seems to match it with the same shutter door and good eye auto-focus. Most importantly, it shoots the 177MP files. Your sample comparison to 44MP is stunning. As a wilderness landscape photographer who makes huge prints, I will consider going with this camera simply for that feature.
Z8 is superior in almost every aspect. And it’s on sale. The Nikon lenses are stellar as well, and the best value of any camera company. Just take a look at the Z 1.8 S primes, you get Canon L or Sony GM quality optics at $400-600. But the main advantage on the Panasonic is size and weight, otherwise the Z8 tramples it.
@@contentm3893- You speak as someone new to photography. First off color can always be changed and modified. Nikon SOOC have the best color science out there, especially their JPEGs. Perfect skin tones, where Canon are a bit too warm and Sony too blue. Fuji is a close second in terms of color science. Both Nikon and Fuji are known for their colors. Panasonic and Sony are not. But again, In post it can all be modified. Next, are you seriously comparing a non-stacked sensor to a stacked sensor in dynamic range? I’d take the negligible hit to dynamic range yet get vastly superior speed, readout speed, and video. Also Nikon just added shuttle angle to the Z8 just 2 days ago. In conclusion, the Z8, now 2+ years old tramples this camera.
I'm amazing how people assign one camera with the entire system. From my experience, if I had chosen Nikon or Canon few years ago, I would have spent more, at least $5000 more on lenses and another $2000, maybe $3000 on body's. Is really a meter of making money for some of us. We all have bills to pay at the end of the day 😅 Thanks for sharing your Z8 evaluation. It makes sense to me now what you are trying to say. And that's really a good thing I want a Hasselblad X2D performance for the price of MFT 😂 or it doesn't make sense for me to upgrade my 16MP Canon or S5 (fist gen) and G9 Take care and best moments Grat Review, guys 😎
Excellent comprehensive video - even in spite of exhaustion and inclement weather. Well done guys. Also that was a lovely portrait of Emily/MicroFourNerds that you took, hope she's pleased with it. Much as I like Panasonic cameras and their features, it doesn't seem like would be for me. A great landscape camera, a great filmmaking/static camera, but not what I want/need as a wildlife shooter.

Chris, I really enjoyed seeing your photos on this trip, you have quite the eye for artistic compositions. Jordan, also compliments to your video work. Your experience behind the camera really helps capture the spirit of Norway. Thanks for braving the weather, I think it really paid off. This is some of your best work.
Just wanted to drop a thumbs up and a comment. I really enjoy your reviews. I'm not a Panasonic shooter and probably never will be but I watch just about every review and always seem to learn something new. Cheers and thank you for the wonderful content!
Chris and Jordan. Can you do a camera test showcasing the 8K video off of the Canon R5ii, Lumix S1Rii, Nikon Z8, and Soy A7RV? Im wondering which camera has the sharpest video, the best color, the sensor that picks up the most color fidelity (fine color differences) and other factors. I want to know which camera produces the best 8K video image. And do some comments on the colors of each camera, as some would say the Lumix S1Rii has the best colors out of all of them. Maybe make comments about attachments for audio, battery grips to extend time and overheating, mention about run times for each camera in 8K, etc.
1, I'm a Lumix shooter so I had a vested interest in watching your review! BUT 2, regardless of that, I'd have to say it's one of your best ever. You nailed the balance between a tech review and the fun of photography/videography. Also love that you mixed the lenses up. Regarding the camera, I'm sold. I shoot weddings with the original S5 & S5ii and have an S9 for travel/everyday/street. I'm loving that it has a nice multi flippy screen, I'm loving the viewfinder, I'm loving the build. All in all I expect to make a pre-order :D
Great review again guys. Your shots have gotten better and better like fine wine since those early day. Lovely bag there Chris...and that Raven part was hilarious!!
Wait, what the hell, Chris and Jordan were in the town and I didn't even hear about it until now?!? ;_; I am really sad for the weather you guys experienced, but to be honest in the recent years Tromsø winters start to really display challanging conditions that require the best cameras and creativity to overcome that (laughing through the tears). The thawing weather spells in the middle of winter here got longer and more frequent in the last 3 years - quite relevant to what scientists say, that Arctic is the most dynamically warming region on the planet. Sorry for the offtopic, great video and a great camera. This Panasonic creates a big challange to both Sony A7RV and A7IV in a way.
Thanks for keeping it so professional whilst soldiering through the elements! Great option for L-Mount, Custom Luts, iPhone Apps, and nearly a perfect controls layout attract me as a photographer. Looking forward to follow on testing… tempting option for this A7R5 user.
The images and footage were great throughout! I'm a Fuji shooter and don't even do much video, but this looks like a terrific camera. Well done Panasonic.
Absolute sweet spot. Loved the S5ii (have two bodies), didn't enjoy the SL3 much (mostly ergonomics), this is a great hybrid of everything. Oh and Pana is actually giving out free CFe-B cards with this camera right now!
Great video! Great review! Like the details you were going into. And regarding the camera, I think it's great. Panasonic chose all the right compromises imo. Preordered today (L-Mount user).
Tromso is definitely a great place to test low-light, high ISO performance, not to mention the incredible monochromatic opportunities. Thanks for sharing.
Brooooo... that Cinelike A2 looks freakin' phenomenal!!!! Closest thing to ARRI that I have ever seen SOOC. Also, I can't tell if the footage has that same digital sharpening going on like the S5II has, or if the sensor is just that clear naturally. Either way, this looks amazing! Definitely not OVER-sharpened at all.
Just curious…why is it when Panasonic says this is a great camera for stills that every reviewer is harping on video inadequacies… instead of looking at the video tools listed as “bonus features“ on a stills camera (glass half full perspective)…🤔
Exactly. Bashing on a full frame photography/stills camera for it’s extra video features (which are fine). And lots of YT’ers jump the ship. Frustrating.
Thx for putting such effort into there reviews. 🙂 I also believe your photos got a lot better compared to earlier videos (personal taste). Really interesting camera... I guess I am still more torn to a Fuji GFX, but this one here with L mount glass is exciting!
Just a note that the S5 and up has a red frame recording indicator setting that actually wraps the entire frame of the lcd preview with a thick red frame to help you clearly see if you’re recording. Obviously not if the screen isn’t facing you, but your camera operator can clearly see.
The fluorescents are oscillating because you’re shooting in 24 fps. 25 fps gets you into sync with the 50 Hz cycle and will mostly eliminate it, especially if you stick to 50% shutter.
It has nothing to do with framerate, only shutter speed/angle matters here. You can shoot both 24p or 25p with a shutter speed of 1/50(or 1/60 for 60Hz).
So at 3300, how does this compare to the Nikon Z8? Which is hovering in that 3k-3.4k price range at the moment Z8 seems more versatile with its speed and stacked sensor
Yay - screen with good articulation! Cinelike A2 looks amazing. Noise performance seems great. Shame that it lags behind Z8 and R5II in sensor speed demanding situations.
Unrelated to the camera, but I recently bought that wotancraft 10l with the pouches. *such* a great bag! Super comfortable, and tonnes of space. All those molle strips are super handy too. It has replaced a domke f6, which was OK, but I eventually got fed up of the metal fixing (which I initially wanted), scratching the crap out for of hands. The wotancraft seems *way* more rain proof (not just the coating, just the structure). Really great!
Too bad you had such a lousy weather in our town. Hope you come back for some cold and beautiful aurora nights. Camera looks great, and your reviews are as always, thrust worthy. 👍
26:44 Same on the G9 II, so unfortunately I stick to single point AF because for what and how I shoot (mostly static subjects), I can't use their object tracking because it wanders too easily AND the initial object tracking focus point is way too big, compared to the small box I get on my Z8, which sticks to the selected target like glue. I use Nikon's 3D Tracking with AF-C mostly for focus/recompose...but I can't do that on my G9 II because of the things I just mentioned. Sadly. I wish they'd update/fix that. It's one of the only complaints I have about the G9 II.
Always love your PP videos, and this one is no exception and with great pictures as bonus. But 4:15 in, it is not a raven, it's a crow. The difference in size is massive. All the rest with ravens and norse mythology is right, though. In lovely Canada you should also have both ravens and crows, both all black, which may confuse some. In Norway and Western Europe crows are grey and black, further east crows are also all black. The two subspecies do interbreed and make hybrids ;-)
Honestly... since the S5II Panasonic has been knocking it out of the park.... just the continuous firmware improvements that the S5II had transformed it several generation forward... completely free. I don't much care for the MP count... but i do miss the screen on top. And FINALLY tethered shooting with C1 on a Pana camera makes it studio usable... and for $3600 it's just like the S5II significantly cheaper than the competition... L-Mount is the place to be as a Photographer/Videographer these days
Harsh conditions apparently lead to great photography and video. Nice stuff! This is what the L-mount needed. If it has a thin enough sensor stack, I'll be using one for M-mount lenses. I know, not mainstream use, but that's how I use my S5 IIx. I just want more resolution for large prints. To Panasonic: Finally.
Wow, expected it to be much bulkier. The lock switches, sensor cover, tilt screen, separate door ports are lovely touches. But the high frame rate limitations are a letdown and 8K doesn't interest me much. Main things that would compel me to upgrade from the S5ii are uncropped 4k120, better preamp (sucks in both of my S5ii's), and better rolling shutter. So I can't say it would be worth it for me but a very nice body. (The G9ii and GH7 have actually tempted me to switch much more in order to minimize these pain points.) We'll see if there's an S1Hii on the way that addresses these. Thanks for such a lengthy and thorough review for this release.
The cinema profile is stunning. A really nice look indeed. I also liked the subject matter when talking about the APS-C mode. The sovereign, independent country of Canada really does have a very good looking and unique national flag and the camera showed it beautifully.
18:45 - That gas station costs the equivalent of $7.98 USD/gallon today (2/25). Today gas in my town in SW Utah is $3.19/gallon. I’ll never complain about the price of gas again.
@@Kevon420 So cheap there's no incentive to consider consumption when buying? Probably contributes to the popularity of those huge pickups and small trucks. In Australia, the equivalent cost is US$4.60 per US gallon. Price is indexed, so cost goes up every year and per capita consumption goes down every year.
There's some heavy taxes applied to petrol in Norway, to further discourage ICE vehicles, which likelycontributes to the high price, and perhaps to maintain price parity with other European countries. It's a bit weird given that Norway gets a lot of income selling crude oil to other countries. A recent article I read put Norway's cash reserves at over USD$4trillion.
As an S1R owner, I can absolutely understand why Panasonic have taken the route they have with the S1R II, it makes total sense, but as a photographer, I was hoping that Panasonic would have done something similar to the S1R, and created a camera similar to the Leica SL3. I am not a fan of flippy LCD screens; it is my least favourite thing with my X-H2, and I thought the screen in the S1R was very well implemented. As for the size and weight of the camera. Again, I can understand Panasonic going for the smaller size, though I am someone who has always appreciated a bigger longer grip. Probably the biggest annoyance for me with the S1R was the battery life. For some reason, the battery drains ridiculously fast, I was hoping that if Panasonic had released a larger body, they would have released a new battery, which fixed the issues, but obviously that is not the case. So, I am sure that 90% of Panasonic shooters are going to be impressed, but sadly this camera really misses a few things for me, but I am not the target audience. Such is life.
there is no reason to upgrade from s1r, s1r body is better, sensor is better, no phase dots on sensor, it gives very clear image, for photo good af, same evf, better screen, video in camera focused on photo no reason. I am s1 owner, also good camera for photos. bought z8 and I think if you want to upgrade camera it is better choice. If I had s1r instead of s1 I think I would just use s1r+28-45 1.8
@@bingbong4848 I have already had this argument with someone else on a pre-release video on another channel, and he had to concede to my point as to why I hate flippy screens. I am a portrait shooter, This means that much of the time, I will be shooting in portrait orientation. If shooting from a low position, The S1RII, has to flip around to be able to show the screen in portrait, whereas the S1R does not, you just turn the camera and bring the screen up. Also, I am always worried that I am going somehow damage the screen when it is flipped out, which is something I don't have an issue with the older S1R. So, what maybe a minor point for you. Isn't for me. It is a deal breaking point. For me, ergonomics, mean more than anything with a camera. I hate the flippy screen on my X-H2, and actively avoid shooting with that camera, because it bugs the hell out of me. I am tempted to buy a second hand X-H1 instead (a camera that I loved).
@@eyeamstrongest Making a comment suggesting that someone lacks a certain skill level, should only be done when you know the photographer and their work. I am guessing you have no knowledge of who I am or my abilities as a professional photographer, or previously when I worked as a television cameraman and occasional director. Also, ergonomics and skill have nothing to do with each other. It isn't that I am unable to use a flippy screen, I just don't particularly enjoy using one. Yes, they are useful if you are shooting video, but I didn't buy my S1R to shoot video, I only use it for photography. The S1R was primarily a photography camera. The S1R II is much more a hybrid camera, and it has been designed as such, because Panasonic recognises that much of their user base are videographers or hybrid shooters. So it makes sense for them to go down the flippy screen route with the S1RII. As for the longer grip, that is just down to me having larger hands. Finally, when it comes to battery. I have most of the battery draining features of the S1R turned off. It is just that the S1R/S1H are well known for draining batteries, with my S1R, being able to drain the battery completely in weeks, if left in the camera, and will lose around 40% of its battery, in the same period, just being left in a bag. Fortunately, I am not looking to upgrade my cameras any time soon. The S1R is still a great camera, and if you know how to use the autofocus system properly, then it is quite usable.
Just FYI regarding your comments about 32bit audio @ 16:30 32bit audio is actually pretty tricky to do because 32bit DAC chips are *extremely* expensive to make to the point where just about every single implementation of a 32bit interface generally uses 2x 24bit DACs and does some signal trickery to combine the two signals at different gain levels while phase canceling the noise offsets. The benefit is also marginal. 24bit already has a MASSIVE decibel ceiling for normal use cases making 32bit overkill. So no, I really wouldn't expect camera manufacturers to start putting 32bit audio capabilities into camera bodies - I'd rather have a cheaper body.

Z8 seems more versatile with its speed and stacked sensor
quality looks dope holy moly.
Yay - screen with good articulation! Cinelike A2 looks amazing. Noise performance seems great.
Shame that it lags behind Z8 and R5II in sensor speed demanding situations.
Gorgeous images - sharp, wide dynamic range, and improved color.
Really hoping Jordan changes his attitude on ravens, but great meeting you guys!!!!
You AND Tom Calton commented?!
Really great!
fantastic video review guys!!
24:32 Great photo of Terry!
This camera is amazing!
Video looks gorgeous. Favorite shot: 13:52
"The Panasonic S1R II Looks Like L-Mount's Best Camera" Damning it with faint praise...
I'm like 30 seconds in and hot damn that is some good looking footage: great location and evidently great camera.
17:47 banding here, does the camera not have banding auto detect?
Best review video on techs.
Probably the most impressive gallery of photos I've seen Chris shoot so far!
The cinema profile is stunning. A really nice look indeed. I also liked the subject matter when talking about the APS-C mode. The sovereign, independent country of Canada really does have a very good looking and unique national flag and the camera showed it beautifully.
Beautiful photography Chris!
is AF getting better or is Jordan getting slower 🤔
Even if you don't watch entire video definitely watch 22:52 to 24:10 just superb
Pics looks like a great time too!
I absolutely agree with you about the ravens. (Great camera too.)
18:45 - That gas station costs the equivalent of $7.98 USD/gallon today (2/25). Today gas in my town in SW Utah is $3.19/gallon. I’ll never complain about the price of gas again.
its $1.5 for the gallon where i come from so am definitely not even gonna dare to complain 😄
USA usually has by far the best price of gas than most western countries, as far as I know.
@@metalmick99 My comment was about petrol price in Australia, not Austria.
I love the display. hope they make a video focused s1hii or even just s1ii with proress raw
Nice one guys, I like it, still not quite there yet to get me to update from my XE1.
You guys nailed it with the background music 😍
Minor point- this screen is both tilting and articulating
there is no reason to upgrade from s1r, s1r body is better, sensor is better, no phase dots on sensor, it gives very clear image, for photo good af, same evf, better screen, video in camera focused on photo no reason.
@@MichaelLaing71 sounds like a skill issue
Without videos of Chris using cameras, I don't know what I'd watch
Just FYI regarding your comments about 32bit audio @ 16:30
32bit audio is actually pretty tricky to do because 32bit DAC chips are *extremely* expensive to make to the point where just about every single implementation of a 32bit interface generally uses 2x 24bit DACs and does some signal trickery to combine the two signals at different gain levels while phase canceling the noise offsets. The benefit is also marginal. 24bit already has a MASSIVE decibel ceiling for normal use cases making 32bit overkill.
So no, I really wouldn't expect camera manufacturers to start putting 32bit audio capabilities into camera bodies - I'd rather have a cheaper body.
Ive really enjoyed this episode and 8k res almost explode my monitor :D
Best Part of the hole Video is definitely 24:06 ! 😂😜 Great work you both! Great detailed deep dive!
