  • An early feature on the NY Islanders' future HOF right wing, Mike Bossy, as a young rookie adapting to life in the big leagues and on Long Island. Televised between periods of an Islanders-Leafs playoff game on April 19, 1978. Bossy later scored in overtime to win the game. Thanks Boss!

Mr. Bossy had said that when he met his wife Lucie she worked behind the concession stand at the rink in Laval that he played at. Lucie spoke only a small amount of English and Mr. Bossy didn't start learning French until he was 16. He has said that he and Lucie tossed a coin-if he lost he would improve his French and if Lucie lost she would improve her English. As it turned out Mr. Bossy lost the bet and became very fluent in French. Ironically when Mr. Bossy was drafted by the NY Islanders Lucie had to learn English anyway

Watch him fly, stick handle and "break the goalie's ankle" (it isn't Chico or Billy) at 3:50. Bossy was just as explosive as he was deceptive. One of the top 10 of all time in my book. Yet, nobody would rank him there, even when they took care of business the Isles were way too humble.

Of course, the islanders had to learn the agony of defeat in a 7 game upset loss to Toronto that year as well as a semi-final loss to their dreaded nemesis, the NY Rangers, the following season before their 4 year dynasty.

Bossy was always bitter about the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals--he felt the Islander dynasty was unfairly overshadowed by the upstart Oilers--and then the NHL changed the playoff format to a 2-3-2 from 2-2-1-1-1-which meant the Islanders were stuck in Edmonton for 8 straight days--he has not been gracious whatsoever when talking about Wayne Gretzky or the Oilers in general
