  • This is a short video on how to replace the cheap/noisy China 2J27L tubes that come in these, with some higher quality 2Ж27Л replacements off ebay. You can get 4 of these NIB for under $10.
You can buy this amp here:

I've been using these awhile. They sound much better with a DC 5 volt usb power supply. Using a 5 volt transformer adds noise. Miady vest heater battery packs last for weeks.
    Without a charge. 😊

      I'll have to try that

There is *no* cleaner DC than a chemical battery.

Found this myself with a few different usb powered audio items now. Think they are definately better when powered from a large enougg power bank.

Your advice to use tubes from the old USSR is based on the fact that there was no obsolescence in production back then. Often, you can tell by the weight that all parts, including the heating element, were optimized for decades of use...The technology was largely stolen from Germany during WWII and used for their own production in Russia after the war.....we said Klingonentechnology because they are so massiv........thx for the vid!

I wish you made this before mid April that when I just had to figure it that being said your methodical process is GREAT so many videos on TH-cam where it's easy to tell they know a little about the first step and have not thought at all about the second step.
I now use it with a power supply that has low put of band of audio low ripple but Im sure U could easily whip up 5 volt 500 milliamps linear power supply

I was looking at this small preamp, but heard about the tube problems, so now the question I have is, did the Russian tubes fix the problem and how do they sound?

It wasn't as bad, but still was noisy and didn't sound good to my ears.

@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Thanks for the input. I generally seem to be put off by directly heated output tubes. The problem is noise, which gets worse with the higher voltages on the filament. Thus DC filaments is the way to go with those. BUT I been hearing that DC filaments changes the sound quality. At any rate, I decided not to go down this rabbit hole because of the need to have separate filament supplies. It just adds to the complexity of the design.

Hello! How good would a headphone amp sound with these tubes?

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics

Not sure, haven't really evaluated this pre-amp yet other than knowing the tubes it came with were super noisy.

I have one and it's not noisy at all..?

Some are, some aren't. Mine SCREAMS but is worse with the tubes it came with. Seems these tubes are being used outside of their designed use/range and luck of the draw if they work or not.
