    Of the dozens of sharpening videos I've watched, yours is the only one that gets it right. I especially like how you actually hone the blade after rough sharpening, using just the file. Brilliant. I will definitely try it. I have a bunch of tough old agaves to prune.

      Thanks for pinning my comment. I forgot to mention a tool I have been using for over 10 years now to simply touch up (hone) a blade that doesn't need complete re-sharpening. It is the $10 Corona AC8300 Sharpening Tool:
      Amazon:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BPASBK?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B000BPASBK&linkCode=xm2&tag=blacscousurv-20.
      Also available at Home Depot:
      www.homedepot.com/p/Corona-Sharpening-Tool-AC-8300/204162678
      It is small and fits in your pocket. You only need to do a few strokes on one side, until you get a fingernail-grabbing burr on the other side, and then remove the burr. I hone gardening tools, including the 2 ft long blades of shears, and all kinds of knives with it. It is sharp hard carbide so it lasts practically forever. It also makes a great ferro rod striker.
      Though it is meant for gardening tools, it serves well for outdoor survivalist knives as well, as this video demonstrates:
      Speedy Sharp - Blade Sharpener - Gear Review - TH-cam : th-cam.com/video/p3XOuZzibDE/w-d-xo.html
      Notice how well it navigates the compound curves of that of that huge knife. Note the name Speedy Sharp. This is just a rebranding of the Corona tool. Corona makes professional quality tools in general.

      Thanks for hearting this. BTW did you ever try the tool I mentioned in my first comment? I forgot to mention that I also sharpen utility blades, single edge razor blades, and even scalpel blades with this one tool. The tool is fantastic. I even did a Cool Tools review of it.

    just how i would of done it too - impressive to see it cut like that that without a finer hone. nice work scott

    These quote "Machetes" are more Sword-like than your everyday machete🤯That steel is HARD‼

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The steel itself is "soft", the thickness of a golok as opposed to a true machete is what gives it it's stiffness, a machete generally is quite thing for grass/cane kind of material, a golok can take on more woody tasks...

      @@WessexBladesHandMadeKnives Thank You for Your Help. I have 4 Bolo Cleaver machetes from Martindale & cannot find any information on how to sharpen them because what I have doesn't work. Thinking of getting a "Worksharp". It's frustrating. Thank You for Your Time.👍

    I made a huge mistake by getting the copy. I think webtex makes them. Tried using a file. Used a dremmel. Used coarse paper. That's all I have. Will not take an edge. Just rolls. The whole blade turns hot and warps. Help please.

    Hi - great video. Just got one of these and proper graft to cut anything, even thin stuff in by back garden! Proper attacked it with the supplied and my own 'cross thread' file - it's got a bit of a bitey edge on it, but nothing impressive. My Mrs bought me a 'survival weekend' for xmas, which I'm off on at the end of this month... I haven't got any machines, so have you got any other suggestions on how I might improve the chopper before I go please!?

      do what you can with the file...then draw file the bevel to really flatten it out with the file..it will finish it off a bit better..then strop on the finest sandpaper/wet n dry you have...with a drop of 3 in 1,,not perfect but in time you can do this with improving "feel" and really achieve a good edge,,.,,all the best!

    I know some people will wince at file sharpening a blade, and insist on using a multitude of expensive honing kits, but I always think of the native tribesman in the Amazonian rain forest sharpening their parang/golok/machete on a well worn rock by the river's edge to a razor edge, and then using the knife for everything from hacking down trees to skinning game.

    The lover part fades away bevel wise i have honed mine on a sandpaper block and follow your vids. Should i edge it all th way down the step down from grinder to sandpaper and oil stones?

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can improve the bevel's finish but it is soft steel, maybe 54 HRC, so don't invest hours of time or go too lean, a good robust edge with an even bevel you can maintain is the best outcome for this tool.

  • @Shooter11B
    @Shooter11B 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How does that edge do in wood? Chopping and whittling? I would assume better than a butter knife, but not anywhere near acceptable for most of us still.

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steven Szabo hi there ,,the steel is very good(if the heat treat is done okay...) so wood really doesn't affect it if the edge has a good geometry..all the best!

  • @jaylane82

    That's a very good edge considering the sharpener is a file. Very hard not to accidently knock the edge right back off when using a file. But awesome vid Scott.
    :-)

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks . with the golok mounted in a vice with wood or leather to cramp it in the jaws, the file could be used with even greater care. but a belt grinder or stones is the better option, in time the file teeth will wear, whereas a stone will just get smaller..

    • @jaylane82

      I agree totally. I carry diamond stones with me every day. Take care of your tools an they take care of you.

    hi scott do you know if these are still issued to are troops?

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi Joe! As far as I know it is still "issue" to our troops but I could be out of touch, for the money though it can be a bomb proof lopper/chopper, I've never known the handle come loose, or one ever breaking (unlike those cheap £14 Chinese short goloks, they're okay, if you get a good one!), the edge achieved after some work is shudderingly good and there is so much steel it could literally last a century, all the best !

    I just use a good steel,they say steels don't sharpen the knife but mine has been sharpened with just a steel for years and it gets a load of abuse,you can use this knife for everything from chopping wood to gutting rabbits.

    110% better then the edge that came on mine this summer, ive worked my ass off to get mediocor results. their heat treat is shit!.
    by a condor, or buy a ontario.
    Granted now that ive sunk hours and hours, and blood sweat and tears into mine. i cant give it up. but its jsut not worth the risk. their heat treat is terrible.

  • @kaikart123

    You can remove the burr by slicing a piece of wood without pressure.

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as you realise the ribbons of metal could rip and create micro serrations in the edge and then be left embedded in the wood, use a different part of the wood next time so as not to mash further metal together...for a rough machete it is a step to save time but for tool care and learning about micro/zero edge maintenance a stropping stage yields more performance, edge life and skill growth.

    • @kaikart123
      @kaikart123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wessex Blades&Bushcraft well considering you are using a file to sharpen a machete, it is implied that you don't have access to a strop.

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      could still gently draw the blade across the file

    • @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives
      @WessexBladesHandMadeKnives  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and all that is implied is no real access to huge grinders

      wrong, files are harder than the tool steel, this is the supplied file specifically for this task..

      initially use a good quality second cut file,,to define the bevel on both sides, working away from the edge will be safer and still work okay, keep the file flat to give an even bevel, work slow to minimise inaccuracies,,,then wrap the file neatly in 240 grit wet and dry paper with some water on it, this will have the flat file behind to support it following the flat you have filed on the blade, then use 360 grit...that will get your muscle memory used to achieving even bevels a bit,,and the blade should have remained cool due to the water on the wet and dry,,,,I hope that helps
