I owned and campaigned one of these, which I bought from a Lincoln/Mercury dealership in Fort Worth. I started off with a 302 Windsor with the two-four barrel Shelby intake, which matched up with the openings in the Ram Air hood. Later I upgraded the engine to the BOSS 302 with a set of 'Headers by JR' "cross-under" headers. Since the Cyclone had been involved in a minor accident, the original fiberglass bumper had been destroyed and it carried a factory steel one. Fortunately, I was friends with 'Dyno Don' Nicholson, and he offered to give me one of the 'glass ones he still had. Of course, I jumped at the offer and my Stroppe-built Cyclone was back to the condition as he had produced for L/M. I left the vehicle pretty much as built, except adding a class-required roll bar and lowering the driver-side fiberglass bucket seat down so the top of my helmet was below the roll bar's top. When I upgraded the two-four barrel intake to a Weiand tunnel ram, it wouldn't fit under the Stroppe hood, so I used a factory fiberglass Cyclone hood instead, installing a low-profile "Pro Stock"-style hood scoop I got from Gary Harwood. With this combination I was able to set National Records in both IHRA Modified Production ... at the old Dallas International Motor Speedway ... and the next weekend in AHRA Hot Rod class at Bill McClure's Green Valley Raceway. Ultimately I quit racing and traded the Cyclone w/o drivetrain for a 1970 'Drag Pack' 428 SCJ Mustang Mach I 4-speed, which, I later learned was rather unique as it was factory-equipped with Air Conditioning... something supposedly not available, supposedly because the A/C condenser wouldn't fit with the Drag Pack's oil cooler... but there it was ... straight out of the Dearborn assembly plant, IIRC.
Boy, do I miss both those rare cars ... 😒 ... and wonder where they are now. 🤔

Hello John. I sold our B/FX Comet around 1978 to a guy in Irving. Boy I wish I still had it now. I ran it for a while with a Boss 302. Also ran it with a set of JR headers. Those were a b*tch to get on and off as I recall. Curious as to where that car is now. I do have some old photos of the car and am going to post them online to see if someone recognizes the car from the decals and can enlighten us as to where the car is now. Hope it survived and can be accounted for. As I recall the car had like 60 miles showing on the speedometer back then.

      @@jimtatum6865 Hello, Jim. 🙂
Like you, I wish I still had the car, and wonder where it is today.
It was rather rare, as it was still in more than 90% of the way it came to Holiday Lincoln-Mercury [Fort Worth] from Stroppe.

HAHA funny! You said it was "disguised" with a stock steering wheel and carpet. Anybody who thinks this is any kind of street comet has simply just arrived from some other planet where hot rods are strictly forbidden. This bad ass Comet is not to be mistaken for anything but a Hot Rod!!

However, this factory 'Hot Rod' actually came still-equipped with the OEM single exhaust muffler system ... or at least mine did. 🙂
BTW, the quarter and rear windshield glasses were factory LOF equipment, and the decklid was factory steel.

Nothing sounds Sweeter than a well built and tuned FORD, either small or big block they just have a unique sound all it’s own. The thing that has always cracked me up is how every single Race Sanctioning Body BANS FORD when they are unleashed as they absolutely destroy the competition from the other 2 manufacturers.

    • @patrickmcleod111

      Robert Read
Your Dad is the world's coolest grandfather if he is building a hopped up 65 Comet, with a 4-speed no less, for his granddaughter! Hopefully he will make sure the suspension is set up to better handle the 'possible' higher than normal speeds, for when it's going into corners and braking from higher than slow speeds.
I had a friend who had a moderately powerful 350 and a posi rear built & installed into his 70 Nova in like 1988-ish. He took us for a ride soon after the engine was installed. We lived in a semi-rural area with lots of narrow, curvy, hilly roads, and he was raising a little hell on one of these roads with a LOT of little rises and dips, and I can tell you that it was scary as hell in a 70 Nova with a stock suspension!
The shocks bottomed out a few times, because of the combination of age, high speeds, and being on a car that was NOT designed for high speed road racing! The Comet will probably be very similar if it's suspension is stock, especially since it'll be 3x older than that 70 Nova was in 1988! Fresh springs and nice high performance shocks should be the minimum standard, because it'll just be a matter of time before your daughter, or a friend of hers decides to raise a little hell in it!

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Mopar's were the best looking cars on the road in the late 50's but they never really had great styling in the 60's. They definitely did hit home runs with the 68-70 Dodge Charger R/T and 70-71 Plymouth Cuda and Dodge Challenger R/T and T/A. Mopar always had the most well engineered drivelines in my opinion. For a really long time the Chrysler 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission was the only automatic transmission on the market that could really handle a lot of horsepower and torque without breaking and could outshift even a skilled driver with a 4 speed manual. Although the 64 Pontiac GTO is credited as the first mid size muscle car the Detroit horsepower war was really started by the 55 Chrysler C-300...the first American production car with a 300 horsepower factory rating. The hottest Ford and GM V8's were still making less than 200 horsepower in 1955. It took Ford and GM until 1957 to catch up with Chrysler performance wise but after that the engines from all 3 major automakers just got more and more powerful every year until the muscle car era really peaked in 1969 and 70. But of course the federal government had to stick their noses in and fuck that up just like they do with anything else they touch

My grandma had a '66 Comet when I got my first car in 1973. My 1st car was a '66 Mustang. Both my grandma's Comet AND my Mustang had 289's. They drove the same and both were equals in power (1/4 Mile). I've been a MOPAR/BMW guy since the late 1970's but have fond memories of my grandma's Comet and my Mustang. A kid used to be able to build a respectable "hot rod" for under $5,000. Now, Hot Rodding is an old man's sport because so many Muscle Cars come from the Factory and are TOO expensive for a kid with a part time job. We used to pull and rebuild a V8 on a weekend and install a 4bbl carb and headers for a few hundred. With the right tires and rims you had your Hot Rod! Now, any clown with a fat check book can buy a $60,000 Muscle Car that would blow away anything we used to build in the 60's and 70's. 500 Horsepower was unthinkable in 1966.

One was perfectly restored SS racer, one was sitting up w/ a Boss 302 and the third was a bone stock A code sitting in a field. The racer was for sale for the right price, the other two owners wouldn't budge. Finally sold mine because of parts unavailability.

I had a 65 Falcon with a Shelby spec 289. That car was so much fun to drive! Not so much fun to gas up. I think the tail lights & trim on the Falcons were much better looking, but I have to say, the vintage Comets I've seen are almost always in better shape than the Falcons. That may just be a coincidence, but it lends to the impression that the Comets were somehow better put together. Either way, these were the best looking cars in their class, I think. Blows my mind that the Mustangs were more popular. But I'm clearly biased. This Comet is just gorgeous.

I had one of these cars back in the 1970's. It was campaigned for a time by a local racer in Dallas, Tx. I found the car in his mother's back yard in Carrolton, Tx, I traded him a 1970 428 Mustang Super Cobra Jet 4 speed car for the Comet. The Comet was complete except for engine. It did not have a top loader 4 speed in it but rather an aluminum cased 4 speed out of a Shelby Cobra. I installed a Hilborn injected Boss 302 and raced it for a while. I eventually sold the car and bought a Harley instead. This was around 1977 or so. Mine had the fiberglass bumper but I also had the original steel bumper that was on the car s delivered. That fiberglass bumper had "Thanks to Dyno Don" painted on it for it was the bumper from his 1964 A.FX car. If anyone knows the location of this car today, I would be curious to know where it is. I was told years ago that it was in a museum in Marietta, GA.

I grew up and got my license in the 80s, and even then 65 Comets were incredibly rare to see, which is partly due to Mercury making significant bodystyle changes pretty much every year. So a 65 looks different than either a 64 or a 66 Comet. The primary difference between the 64 vs 65 Comet was that the 64 had side-by-side dual headlights, while 65 has over-under dual headlights. Also 64 had more add on body trim along both sides of the car. From the side the 64 and 65 Comets look fairly similar, but very different from the front, and the side trim was different. Then in 66, the Comet basically became a Fairlane. But even if you go back to 61-62-63 Comets, they too are significantly different as well. It seems odd

Hello, Jim! So that's what happened to my old Cyclone! Great to know! 😀
Like you, I wonder where it is today. 🤔
BTW, the bumper was one of Dyno's left over '65 bumpers. That was the reason for the "Thanks to Dyno Don" acknowledgement on the bumper.

Odd that it's a Cyclone, but sports a Caliente grille...

      You noticed that, too. 🤔
Mine also had that same grill, but I always thought it was because the Cyclone grill had been damaged in the minor accident incurred by the original driver and the dealer "cheaped-out" by replacing the "two-tone" Cyclone grill with the cheaper "chrome" grill.

I don't claim to be an engineer but I really don't see how a fiberglass Fender could be lighter than sheet metal..... if anything aluminum would have been the lightest of all three materials.?.?.?

Mercury, the forgotten badass. I have owned mostly Mercury products in my years and I will be 55 soon, just to name a few, 68 Cougar XR-7, 66 Comet 202 2dr sedan called "Grandma " several 70-71 Montego Cyclone 351 cars, and so on. I am remiss to say that I don't own a Mercury at the moment, but do have a fox body 4eyed 83 Get Stang and I know where a Mercury Capri fox body 82-84 is wasting it's days in someone's back yard doing nothing. It's my next conquest. I say these things cause people either have forgotten or are too young to know just how badass Mercury's are/where. They never embarrassed me. I am still pissed off at Ford for tanking them and keeping the piece of Shit Lincoln line alive. Smfh.

I agree. I'm a Ford man but I actually prefer Mercury. I'd take a 67-70 Cougar over a similarly equipped Mustang any day of the week. The Cougar was a much nicer car than a Mustang. My favorite Merc ever made is either a 70 Cyclone Spoiler 429 SCJ or a 68 Cougar GT-E 7 Litre with the 427 Side Oiler. Love the 69-70 Boss 302 Cougar Eliminator too. Probably my favorite small block pony car ever made other than a 70 Plymouth AAR Cuda or Dodge Challenger T/A with the 340/6 BBL/Six Pack. I'm a Ford/Mercury man but nobody did muscle cars like Mopar did in those days. Seemed like Ford was always a little behind Mopar and GM(specifically Chevrolet and Pontiac) as far as street performance went...at least in those days
