Ah yes, survivor's guilt, when you feel you shouldn't have made it out alive at the cost of your comrades and friends. The poor man was driven to suicide, but, he had a thought, he still has his whole life ahead of him, with a family, with new potential friends, he also thinks that this isn't what they'd want him to do, and so, he turns back and heads home after nearly drowning. He'll make plenty of new memories over the years,, and when he finally passes of old age, he'll be with the boys again, sailing the seas forever, laughing and cheering along the way.

i definitely cried as well. My mom passed away about 8 months ago from radiation treatment for a brain tumor and thinking about this song did a number on me. the sadness of this song makes it so much more powerful to me

modern seafarers especially fishermen who goes to deep oceans can have this kind of life(sea life is still hard) were they lost their comrades from disasters even some veteran navy men wants their ashes to be buried in the ocean where the exact coordinates of their ship shank like the one who ask to be buried where the USS Lexington sank.
Soldiers feel this kind of suffering, even in present time. Dead comrade will haunt any man be him brave or not

This song and this animation in particular helped me grieve and I can’t listen to it and not feel his presence need me.

I literally cry to this. To think about this mans pain, his survivor guilt, his desperate desire to see his greatest friends and re-live that epic journey he had with them. To even think that from above they're watching him with smiles, and as he knows he'll get to see them again soon. hits me hard :(

I always imagined when they were staring down, that they would see the ship resting on the ocean floor
Funny that you say that, I had the exact same idea! Unfortunately I just couldn't find any pics with a good perspective of a ship and my freehand skills weren't good enough for something so intricate...
I always thought they capsized and saw their crew, whose ghosts helped them back up to their boat.
For me it was as Ofigz showed but a little bit smaller darkness surrounded by blue, really hammering in the singer's place at the shallowest part of a truly _unimaginable deep,_ followed by a side view the singer staring down with his mixed feelings before surfacing with the help of his comrades.
I think putting anything at the bottom, while showing the fate which should have befallen him, takes away from the mysteriousness and dread that comes from an open expanse of abyss.
Could've just took the first Pic u used in the first slide, free handed it harshly, set the opacity to like 15, erase some parts to make it look broken and boom
Actually, some years after my first comment (yes I'm still coming back to this video, it's just too good) I appreciate the simplety of a dark abyss more. It conveys better the message of "I'm drowning and I see something that I thought I'd wanted to see, but now that I'm staring it face to face I don't think I want to be doing this anymore". Without the ship there's nothing calling to the abyss, nothing saying "come down with your mates", just the old plain dark depths of the sea which is what would make somoene rethink drowning themselves

So I literally just found this about 30 minutes after finding “Bones in the Ocean.”
When I saw the wojack I was suddenly worried I was watching a shitpost, but holy ***fuck*** was I wrong there. Masterpiece. Absolute masterpiece. The song already just hits different, and this just makes that more so. Especially since I’d missed some stuff, like what “as I live all the years that they left me behind,” actually, you know. *meant*.

This is exactly what i imagine when i hear the song. grief and guilt for the lads that didnt make it, moved on with his life but his heart still stays in that sea. Along with the lads, until the end of his life.
That ending hit... really hard. Just as the song said, he lived on in their place, living as long as he could and filling that life with joy. He remembered them all the while, making a memorial for them. And when it was his time... He went to join them.

Since young i've been terrified of the sea, but it's like i can hear the waves calling me. In those hours where its only you and your thoughts i swear on Christ above i can hear it. The calling of new life, the very tides and their rhythimic hail: free from all, freedom in it's essence but with the curse that'll never find a home.
I've seen it in my father's eyes and within those who came before him, i've seen it in so many more faces that are now long forgotten and so many times that it scares me.

I've seen a few other videos for this song, but I don't think any of them captured the poignance of "As I live all the years they've left me behind" as well as this video. The montage of the survivor getting married and having his own life after accepting his loss is a goddamn gem.

it keeps changing through the song. AT THE FIRST TWO choruses (I think it 2). He remembers the FALLEN, and questions their thinks. with the question "do they think of me"?
Then he goes on to REMEMBER THE LIVING, with the question "do they think of me"?
Then he makes peace with the fallen. With he remembers the fallen, and he knows exactly how they feel. With AND they think of me. And it is finally no longer their (bones in the ocean) will forever be. BUT now, it changes to (souls) (our SOULS in the ocean) will forever be.
You heard it, and I heard it a zillion times. And our brains both heard it. But I, just now, today. I finally actually "saw" it.
It is a very impactful song with deep meaning, very easy to gloss over because of how good it sounds on its own. I'm glad you can more fully appreciate it now 😁

I literally started crying when explaining the meaning of this song to someone.
It's always that last solo that kicks me
I think what gets me most is the laughing.
Its the perfect type of laugh you hear when you’re with your buds.
For the protagonist it’s probably one of the most painful things he will hear in his life. All at once a lifetime of memories, jokes, and time spent together with his best friends comes flooding back to him. And no matter how bad we wants to, he can’t join his friends in reminiscing about those memories.
Yet to his fallen comrades, they get to share an eternity with each other, going over the times they’ve spent together and I’d imagine in some way making more memories even in death.
One day, when the Lord says its time, the protagonist can join his friends in the laugher, and they’ll be together once more.

I played this for my best friend Moss after he passed away from cancer at 8 years old. He loved car rides and sea shanties. It also really helped me realize that goodbye isn't forever...Too the good boys as well as man's best friend 🍻
Usually these videos are a bit sappy and in the face, but this is really moving, especially the part with the photos at the end.
I find myself revisiting this video at least once a month. It still brings tears to my eyes.
