Truma s3002 replace Thermocouple and Mini Insert - (Solves problem where only pilot light works)

  • My truma gas heater only worked with pilot light. When turning the knob it is not possible to increase power or heat as the main burner didn’t light. I made this video because it seems there are no videos on this subject in English for repairing these systems.

    I didn’t record the whole process of removing the heater and reinstalling, but before you do anything like this as a DIY project, you should disconnect your gas cylinder and never tackle the project without oversight of a professional. Never reinstall your gas heater using old o-rings on the exhaust duct.
    This video is intended to help folks who have a competency of working with complex projects. Be advised that gas systems are dangerous and I bear no responsibility for any person who injures themselves or others trying to tackle this without proper competency or professional assistance. If you want to work on a gas system like this and don’t know how to do it, then my advice is, don’t. Again, this video is for information purposes only.

    The parts you need for this fix:
    Assuming all other elements on your truma heater work, you need to purchase the following items with corresponding part numbers to do this fix. Just google search these part numbers to find a suitable supplier near you
    Truma Exhaust duct fitting, seal and clamp kit. Part number 30030-03600
    Truma magnetic insert mini. Part number 30030-12200
    Truma Thermocouple. Part number 30050-13900

    Thanks for filming this, and adding the part numbers. I decided not to replace the mini insert, as I could see my 32 year old thermocouple was physically damaged. Solved my issue. I appreciate your work.

    Sadly some dangerous misconceptions and advice on here about what a thermocouple and the valve does.
    The thermocouple generates, when heated, as mentioned, a small current which holds the magnetic valve open to allow gas to flow but only when current flows from the thermocouple when hot.
    This is why, to light the burner, you push down and hold the knob down for 30 seconds or so, this mechanically opens the valve against the spring and gas flows, the burner lights, the thermocouple gets hot, produces current, and this is the important bit, after about 30 seconds or less, the current energises the magnetic coil enough to keep the valve open, but only as long as it is getting heated, you can then release the knob.
    If the flame blows out, the thermocouple no longer produces current, the coil no longer produces a magnetic field, the spring ( which someone in the comments stupidly suggested to remove ) then closes the valve which prevents a dangerous situation of the gas still continuously flowing until the knob is turned to zero !!!!
    So by removing the spring of this safety component gas would be allowed to flow causing a potential fire hazard.

    Thanks this could be helpful as same symptom as my S3000P gas heater . Hope i'll be able to do it without removing the complete heater and try removing the parts from under the caravan. Assuming the part numbers will be the same for my manual piezo igniter model. Hopefully i'll be successful as well 🤞

      It’s not likely you will be able to access these parts from under the caravan. Usually the only thing from the bottom is the air inlet and gas connect. The rest is bolted in from the inside. But don’t worry too much, it’s pretty easy to remove once you take the cover off. It’s just the exhaust outlet and 4-8 bolts after disconnecting gas underneath. I don’t know much about the S3000P but please double check part numbers. Can’t say for certain they are the same.

    Thanks for the video, it’s much appreciated.
    So the heater is supposed to take air from outside the camper, exhaust them outside camper and the heater works as sort of a radiator, using radiant heat from the fins?
    It doesn’t create airflow though a camper like a modern diesel heater piped around the camper would does it?

      Yes that’s correct. It’s a radiant heater in that sense. But, often, many campers are equipped with an electric fan and piping just behind this heat source to pump the radiant air throughout the camper.

    I have the same problem on my Truma S 3002 (2010), and will try your method. Have ordered the two parts. However, how do I fit in the termocoupler - do I need to dismount the whole heater - I have looked underneath - and do not see how I can loosen the old, and fasten a new one??

      Yes, you need to dismount the entire heater to access this area.

      @@dashiszznit Thx - have done so now, and bought a complete new burner unit - instead of just the two parts you recommended. Cost me about $160 in addition. My unit is a 2010 model, so I hope this was a wise investment... - eliminating potential future problems... Will use a certified mechanic to mount it all together - and test for leaks...

    i have a sl3002 with electric box automatic ignitor that doesnt click or send spark.
    i changed battery's not 1.5 volts but rechargeable 1.2 volts (maybe this is the problem?)
    i sand all the contactpoints in battery tray - electroc box between wire connections and still not clicking sound.
    bridged the 2 pinn connection from switch on gasvalve with a wire between 2 pins and still nothing .
    of the sparkplug doesnt work should the electronic box still make a spark clicking sound or not?
    how can i test wich one is bad?

      @@chevroletbelair1 this is a different problem than the video.
      But having said that, the model in this one uses auto igniter which requires a 1.5v AA battery to work. When you turn the knob from zero to 1 to 10 it should make a tick-tick-tick-tick sound automatically. If it is not making that sound then something is wrong.

    Hi, thanks for the video.
    One question..... The old thermocouple seems to have two nuts where it goes to the valve. One big, one small. The new one only the bigger nut. Why is that? Superceded part??

      I think the big nut is there to only hold the magnetic valve in place. If you scroll to the 4:00 minute mark you’ll see a cut of the video where it isn’t installed. You’ll install the big nut to hold the valve insert in place and then the valve end of the thermocouple (small nut) will be then be used to attach the thermocouple to the big nut which should have a threaded hole to screw it in place.

      Also just a tip, your thermocouple should have come also with a larger nut as a part of the kit. That is for the thermocouple end that sits near the pilot light, to put that in its correct position. Mentioning that, just in case you’re confusing that part for the other one I the valve side.

      I think mine is just making a poor connection. It's working ok again now. Mind you, it is a 1989 caravan so its done well.
      I haven't replaced anything or even bought anything new yet. I did give things a clean a few years ago. 👍

      Hi Benjamin, I’m not a professional in all matters concerning these system. This was mainly a video for this one issue I found out the solution for, which is very common. Not sure I can be a big help for your specific problem. Id definitely recommend calling a gas pro to give you a hand.
