Great analysis, I think we need to honor these bands more that are people's gateways into new genres, they deserve more respect than they're generally given!
Back then Blinded in Chains was part of the soundtrack for Need for Speed: Most Wanted and as a kid it became basically muscle memory to go to the menu and put the song on at the start of every cop chase, good times
Damn! That was prime Trivium and A7X! So much amazing guitar work! A7X, BFMV, Trivium and KSE was the first "non-obvious" heavy bands I listened too, still got a lot of love for their works.
This album is so good! I didn't like the vocals at first, but they really grew on me. After about a dozen listens I was sold and saw them about 4 times on this tour. I don't like how they are currently viewed by the metal community in general and I hope they can figure out a formula for some new shit eventually.
This album changed my life, it really did. I was huge into A7X, more so than the other OC bands, and Waking The Fallen was my jam. Then they evolved into whatever genre City of Evil is and I must've listened to the album on repeat for a couple of years, and eventually led to my Deathbat tattoo in 2006.
One of my favorite albums of ALL time. Definitely open my eyes to thrash and new wave metal. So I agree with the assessment that it is a very important album for metal.
I found Bat Country on a random computer in my tech class in high school and fell in love with the sound. It was the first time I'd heard A7X and would go on to find out more as I dove into metal.
Growing up here in SoCal during this time was incredible. Mainly for the fact that in the “core realm” of things, there literally was a band for every walk of life. the list is pretty stacked with bleeding through , A7X, Atreyu, and bleed the sky to name a few, because it seemed that each band found their footing early on and just started dropping killer records. The venue to be at to see’em all is Chain Reaction, and man oh man, does that room get rowdy. Great review!!
This was a really important album for me growing up. I probably wouldn’t be playing guitar or recording music if I hadn’t listened to it. Even today, I’ll crank out the main riff on Beast and the Harlot. So fun to play.
Venom and Manson were my gateway to heavy stuff, but I love A7X. I first saw them at The Cotton Club in Atlanta when they were promoting Waking the Fallen. Tiny venue, maybe 100 people there. It used to be under The Tabernacle. I really miss those days.🤘
Oh my god hahaha this was definitely my intro to metal. I'm brutally critical of this record now, but we gotta give it some credit for what it meant to the metal community!
This was an important album for me getting into metal, around the same time I was listening to Disturbed and Korn and the three of those together have a special place in my heart even though they aren't my cup of tea any more. Korn might be my favourite of the 3 now.
For me, city of evil is their only album that instantly hooked it's claws into me, and their only album that has stuck with me over the years and also the only time that I have seen them live was shortly after the release of this album, but what a fucking amazing album it is. So many great riffs, melodies and harmonies, especially the vocal harmonies, so awesome, and something that is really rare in metal. On top of my mind can't really think of any other "modern" metal band that does that with the same finesse. (Of course there are others, but I mainly listen to extreme metal, classic old heavy metal or hardcore punk, so I might just be uneducated) But for me this is definitely a 10/10 album, love it! Maybe someday I should give their other albums a second chance.
This album changed everything for me. I heard Bat Country during music class show-and-tell in the 4th grade and was OBSESSED. My brain was shattered. Still have such a soft spot for it!
I was also 15 when this came out and was already a huge A7X fan so this one hit hard! In fact my 1st metal cd ever was a burnt copy of sounding the 7th trumpet that my friend gave me. Great memories and great album!
Loved this album so much in my early teens. Bat Country was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. Its not really to my taste anymore but this will always be one of the albums that really got me into metal.
Fantastic review. I was 13 when I first heard Bat Country. Syn’s playing and The Rev’s drumming amazed my 13 year old mind. I was introduced to Hair Metal from my parents and at the time that was all I listened to. This album was the bridge I needed to push me towards heavier music. With the song Betrayed in introduced me to Dimebag Darrell, who became my biggest inspiration and motivation on guitar. They were my favorite band in high school and I still consider them to be a favorite. I’m forever grateful for this album leading me to what I love. I’m 30 now and through the years I may not listen to them as often as I used to. But man sometimes the nostalgia hits just right when listening to some of these songs.
Avenged Sevenfold was my first Metal concert back in 2006 on the City of Evil tour. Absolutely loved this album when it came out. Fun thing is M.Shadows is my cousin so seeing how big they got after this release was pretty sweet as well
I love this album. While I'm with you Brad on loving Waking the Fallen a bit more, City of Evil is objectively, the best one of their career. I've always been a big A7X fan from when I heard the song "Chapter Four" on NASCAR Thunder 2004 and love how every album they put out is very different from each other. Sounding the Seventh Trumpet being on the punky side of metalcore. Waking the Fallen being on the classic and extreme metal side of metalcore. City of Evil embracing their classic metal and thrash influences. The self-titled showcasing experimentation. Nightmare being their darkest album and getting heavier. Hail to the King bringing back the classic metal side. The Stage, becoming a progressive metal band with hints of thrash and even black metal. Hope whenever their next album comes, it either continues their prog exploration or showcases more extremity.
Dude i remember when i was younger i hated this band because of the immature accusations of them being an Emo band, glad to say that i quickly grew out of that shit and this album is in constant rotation on my playlists.
I was in highschool when this album came out and I would say it was the one that actually got me into metal (besides The Poison from Bullet For My Valentine). When I was younger I was not into nu metal, I was more of a pop punk/ punk rock girl and also was getting a bit into metalcore and post hardcore. This album was definitely my gateway to explore more metal subgenres, so I agree that it was a key to broaden and diversify the heavy metal listeners and it should be recognized for that (and also for its musical quality).
The edward scissor hands mashup really works lol! But i love the overt danny elfman refs in their music. The Rev and Syn had a side band that was heavily oingo boingo influenced. Some of songs the he wrote for that band ended up in a7x.
This is one of the best guitar albums from the 21th century. I'm not talking about technical (even that, Gates and Johnny kick some pretty hard chops and arpeggios) guitar, but straight kickass riffing with awesome melodies and badass solos. They are right there besides Children of Bodom and Lamb of God as the best metal guitars from that era. Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, Bullet For My Valentine, and of course Trivium. Those 4 was my first "non obvious" heavy bands (I mean, the first besides Metallica, Slayer, Black Sabbath and the giant classics like em) I got to listen. Nowadays I'm a death metal dude, I even have my own death metal band (and we are really old school oriented), but I always got respect and love for those modern heavy albums which made me pick that guitar and work on my shred and skills like crazy.
Feel like A7X doesn’t get enough credit tbh. Yeah they’re not the heaviest band ever, but they’re genuinely good songwriters. I enjoy them immense even though I’m more into heavier stuff
The wicked end and strength of the world is actually my 2 favorite from this album, but you mentioned them as the worst part?. I confused we have radically different taste.
Avenged Sevenfold are THE band that got me into heavier music than classic Heavy Metal beyond Iron Maiden and shit… especially the Rev‘s drumming inspired my love for music and musicianship and now I am listening to stuff that is heavy like Slaughter To Prevail
Everyone talks so much crap on a7x but for me a young metal head back in middle school they were monumental in really cementing me in the metal genres now many many years later. Metal is my life. Iv grown from a7x a little bit but will always have a place in my heart
Really love this channel and on this topic discuss. But sadly I'm not really good in listening english language and there's no english subtitle available in this channel so I cannot really understand what you talkin' about sir.
Honestly I mainly hear the Guns n' Roses in the album's sound is mainly in the guitar playing, particularly the way they play and tone their guitar solos.
I LOVE OC METALCORE! Love the whole gothic tinge they provided. Bleeding Through’s Love Will Kill All is criminally underated imo. As for A7X, I’ve always dreamed about a Waking the Fallen pt 2 but also love the danny elfman songs! Usually after Waking the Fallen I find one or two songs from each album to enjoy but the last one didn’t have anything that caught my interest. Interested to see what they release in the future 🤘🏽
This album came out when I was in high school. I had always heard of them but wasn’t properly introduced to their previous work. But, when I heard Bat Country on the radio, I about shit myself as a young teenage drummer. I was kinda tired of the 16th not dbl bass patterns and Cookie Monster vocals at the time and this was just so damn fresh! I took money from delivering pizzas to go to the store and buy the album. Lol I skipped prom to go see them too!
I think I'll always prefer Waking the Fallen. I also think that Shadows found his true post-surgery voice on later albums. But goddamn this album is good. The guitar work and drumming especially is really good. And the songs themselves? Some of their best. "Beast and the Harlot", "Bat Country", "Sidewinder", "Burn It Down", "Seize the Day". Just those 5 songs alone are titanic songs for the era. Shadows' vocals are an acquired taste here (as I said, I think he really found his voice later, especially on Nightmare), but he was just coming off vocal surgery and was still relearning how to sing, so that can be forgiven. Besides, that Axl Rose swallowing Willie Nelson tone is totally unique and charming in a weird way.
They don't fear to change their sound! I like this! And I like how they became more Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. I love 'City of Evil', 'Avenged Sevenfold', 'Nightmare' and 'The Stage'.
FLAWLESS fucking album. There isn't one song on here that is even close to being the worst or "bad". There's only least best on City of Evil, kinda like the self titled album right after! I lost a lot of weight when I deployed to Kuwait and Iraq when I would listen to this on my ipod back in the day. When the intro to beast and the harlet would play I felt like I could sprint forever....
A7X get shat on a lot but this album was really something new. Even now I can't get enough of Nightmare though. I think it's a much more well rounded and better sounding album. Not a huge fan of the album The Stage, but the title track is easily one of my favourite songs ever.
Hmm maybe I'll give this another listen. I've kinda outgrew A7X because I got into more extreme metal bands. Not helped but the fact that I found myself only liking their singles and not full albums. I remember I was kinda hyped for The Stage in 2016. When it came out, it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't clicking for me. Then, when they dropped out of the Philadelphia date when they were touring with Metallica in 2017 (understandably so), I completely fell off from this band. They're coming out with a new album later this year (supposedly) and I'll probably check it out. Maybe I'll become a fan again?
Yea Brad sounds like I did the same as you and got in to Godsmack then A7X then Behemoth and all the good extreme shit after. I’d say death metal is my most loved genre but most other genres I only got into a few bands and the rest seemed crap. So there can be a band in every metal genre that people can like. Still love A7X the are quite progy band in ways and the stage actually is progy but I love it.
Great great album, and I actually like the more progressive songs towards the end. Still The Beast and the Harlot to this day man, when that thing comes on I am on FIRE! She's the dwelling place for DEEEMOOONS! Fucking Babalon! Bat Country is an awesome trip song!
There are few bands that I actually hate, but I cannot overemphasize my hatred for these guys. Of course I'll still watch the video because it's Banger/Bradley!
listened to it again after watching. Few strong moments but overall lacking. I remember being so disappointed at first and not really easing to it later on. Not really into metalcore per se but I really loved Waking the fallen for its mixture of styles and seamless transitions between them. CoE feels like variations on one song. And the drums sound terrible, particularly the snare. Guitar work kills though on that album.
I wasn't really into A7X growing up, but I WAS really into their early contemporaries in Bullet For My Valentine. I swear that if you were to draw a venn diagram between BFMV and A7X's fanbases, they'd be just, like, a circle due to how similar they sound haha.
After watching I had a relisten and concluded that I did and still hate the sound and style of this band. The G 'n' R style cock rock image direction is like kryptonite (the video for Beast and the Harlot makes me cringe), the vocals are annoyingly raspy and nasal, the drum sound is a bit flat, and whilst there's no doubt they can shred I find the sickly sweet melodic harmony choices gross. Not my thing but really appreciate the review putting it in context because there's no denying they were a big deal, for teens particularly, back then. If I had been a couple of years younger when this came out I may well have gotten into them.
Loved it at the time, but can't listen to more than 30 seconds anymore. The vocals just ruin it for me. Musically speaking, this is the last album of theirs that I really enjoyed.
I really liked this album when it came out, and I know there's a lot of divergent opinions about Avenged Sevenfold, as musicians and as people, but I think we can all agree on one thing: that is some ugly as HELL album art!
This is a cheesy and cringey band, but this album is great, I can’t lie. It might be mostly nostalgia for me, but you can’t deny the song writing, melodies and solos are great. I even got my dad into this album.
The record that made me a metalhead besides Triviums' Ascendancy
Yes another story like mine! and not getting into metal by some death or black metal like so many other ppl on the Internet profess.
Damn! That was prime Trivium and A7X!
So much amazing guitar work!
A7X, BFMV, Trivium and KSE was the first "non-obvious" heavy bands I listened too, still got a lot of love for their works.
Falling away, cant buy back time. Burned it down anyway.
Avenged Sevenfold helped me get into metal, Arch Enemy helped me to get into more extreme and brutal stuff. Metal is therapy, hail Iommi.
This album is so good! I didn't like the vocals at first, but they really grew on me. After about a dozen listens I was sold and saw them about 4 times on this tour. I don't like how they are currently viewed by the metal community in general and I hope they can figure out a formula for some new shit eventually.
metal community are like the kpop community petty lil ppl that gets triggered when some bands comes up with something different
This album was my gateway to metal, love it ♥
This album changed my life, it really did. I was huge into A7X, more so than the other OC bands, and Waking The Fallen was my jam. Then they evolved into whatever genre City of Evil is and I must've listened to the album on repeat for a couple of years, and eventually led to my Deathbat tattoo in 2006.

Overkill Unearthed is one of my favorite series from you guys, nice content.
Love these overkill unearthed reviews
Growing up here in SoCal during this time was incredible. What?? You didn't like the orchestrated section of The Wicked End?? That shit is epic.
Same here, only toss SOAD in there as well.

OMFG, banger just cheers me up, putting Brad on the cam and review one of my favs album all time, fucking metal 🔥🔥
The Edward scissor hands scene absolutely floored me 🤣🤣
This album started it all for me. Forever grateful for this release! 🤘
Best album of all time. Great riffs, excellent drumming, incredible flow. Great gateway into metal
Love this album, so much more depth than people give them credit for. I think the Stage was a real return to form.
The drum fill in Blinded by Chains is my favorite part of the entire album. You had to single that part out.
I was also 15 when this came out and was already a huge A7X fan so this one hit hard! In fact my 1st metal cd ever was a burnt copy of sounding the 7th trumpet that my friend gave me. Great memories and great album!

This album, this fucking album is the single reason I'm into metal today, well now I'm more of a Death metal guy but i can't ignore my roots
The haters seem to be quiet these days. I think people appreciate a7x a lot now, not just fans. It’s just good music
I remember checking out the self-titled 18 Visions album back in the day. I thought it was pretty solid.
Oh the irony behind the name Overkill Unearthed and reviewing A7X
And the irony is no one cares about overkill
here before the elitists show up and cry over this "not being metal"
Crazy guitars, interesting/unique vocals, dirty/party imagery… the GNR comparison fits.
this is my favorite video you guys have put out to date. I especially appreciate the 18V callout.
Dude i remember when i was younger i hated this band because of the immature accusations of them being an Emo band, glad to say that i quickly grew out of that shit and this album is in constant rotation on my playlists.
Man, 2005. My entry point. Still love this album. Gateways are important. Sick review.
When will we get a video talking about Orange County Metalcore tho? 👀
I was in highschool when this album came out and I would say it was the one that actually got me into metal (besides The Poison from Bullet For My Valentine). When I was younger I was not into nu metal, I was more of a pop punk/ punk rock girl and also was getting a bit into metalcore and post hardcore. I always hear the guns n roses influence in the albums energy and Shadows voice. You mix Phil Anselmo and Axel Rose and you get Shadows
My top 3 album from them, alongside Self-titled and Nightmare
The edward scissor hands mashup really works lol! But i love the overt danny elfman refs in their music. The Rev and Syn had a side band that was heavily oingo boingo influenced. Some of songs the he wrote for that band ended up in a7x.
The self titled is probably my favorite but this album and Waking The Fallen fight for being my second favorite.
This is one of the best guitar albums from the 21th century. I'm not talking about technical (even that, Gates and Johnny kick some pretty hard chops and arpeggios) guitar, but straight kickass riffing with awesome melodies and badass solos. Totally agree with it being their best album. Also really appreciate the 18 visions shoutout. Those guys were solid back in the day...
Feel like A7X doesn’t get enough credit tbh. Yeah they’re not the heaviest band ever, but they’re genuinely good songwriters. I enjoy them immense even though I’m more into heavier stuff
Hahahaha that Danny elfman comparison are so on point!
Great to see this reviews from the good old classics, love em!
I thought they finally released their new album after quickly reading the title.
Everyone talks so much crap on a7x but for me a young metal head back in middle school they were monumental in really cementing me in the metal genres now many many years later. Metal is my life. Iv grown from a7x a little bit but will always have a place in my heart
I hope you guys do a deep dive on parkway drives horizon album, that would be a BONKERS review

Lol I skipped prom to go see them too!
I don't agree with the verdict, but the review is so great. Good job Zorg.
Why did my brain read that as '... Album Review I Overrated Unearthed' ha!
cool review! I agree that Eighteen Visions definitely deserves more praise and attention! Even their butt rock stuff is good!
I literally thought AX7 put a new album out lol.
Eighteen Visions is amazing!
someone recently said ( I forgot who it was) : " A7x is the Motley Crue of Metalcore", and I realised that this is exactly why I despise them
I think I'll always prefer Waking the Fallen. I also think that Shadows found his true post-surgery voice on later albums. But goddamn this album is good. Stone cold classic. Love this album
This album was on repeat on my cd player
They don't fear to change their sound! I like this! And I like how they became more Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. I love 'City of Evil', 'Avenged Sevenfold', 'Nightmare' and 'The Stage'.
Still love this album
Of course this fuckin dude would be reviving A7X…
great band i love avenged sevenfold first heard avenged sevenfold city of evil in 2006 amazing album
R.I.P REV 🤘🏻
FLAWLESS fucking album. There isn't one song on here that is even close to being the worst or "bad". There's only least best on City of Evil, kinda like the self titled album right after!
I lost a lot of weight when I deployed to Kuwait and Iraq when I would listen to this on my ipod back in the day. When the intro to beast and the harlet would play I felt like I could sprint forever....
Never got into A7X... but Beast And The Harlot? Yeah.
Also I have until the ink runs out in my car rn. It’s so bad in a good way. I think vanity is my favorite tho
The transition record for sure.
One of the best from A7X
I kinda agree with the guns n roses comparison, esp appetite era.
I love this album
A7X get shat on a lot but this album was really something new. Even now I can't get enough of Nightmare though. I think it's a much more well rounded and better sounding album. Not a huge fan of the album The Stage, but the title track is easily one of my favourite songs ever.
Love this album still
5:38 seriously, who let that kid into vegas anyway
Hmm maybe I'll give this another listen. I've kinda outgrew A7X because I got into more extreme metal bands. Not helped but the fact that I found myself only liking their singles and not full albums. Not their last good album btw. Their only good album. But it’s incredible tbh

Definitely not their last great album, their most recent one The Stage is their true pinnacle.
Great album
I got tired of their sound in general but I still rate this album highly
Great great album, and I actually like the more progressive songs towards the end. Still The Beast and the Harlot to this day man, when that thing comes on I am on FIRE! She's the dwelling place for DEEEMOOONS! Fucking Babalon! Bat Country is an awesome trip song!

Never understood the hate on this band. The guys can clearly play.
Strength of the world is the most impressive song on the album dawg
Loved it at the time, but can't listen to more than 30 seconds anymore. The vocals just ruin it for me. Musically speaking, this is the last album of theirs that I really enjoyed.
Best records.
The riffs on this album are amazing, but the drum sound is the worst. And the Self-titled album and Nightmare are superior albums in every way.
Self titled better than City of Evil? Brother, what are you smoking?
Hell no, city of evil smokes those albums
Nah this is by far their best album and the drum sound is stellar
@@oisinmcphillips2090 Sorry, lad, the production on City of Evil just annoys me too much. Call the self-titled one a guilty pleasure, if you will.
