  • In early September, 2014, I completed a 10-day trekking circuit through the spectacular Cordillera Huayhuash in the Peruvian Andes. Demanding, but insanely gorgeous, the circuit was one of the best hiking experiences I've had. Here are the highlights.

    I can't wait to do this trek solo this summer. I love the Peruvian andes. Last year I did the Santa Cruz trek and Laguna 69 and I need to scratch that itch again. Thanks for making your video.

      @@BJC511 I went to Peru for the first time in late November. I hiked the Santa Cruz trek first in late November and Laguna 69 in early December. With it being my first time, I can't comment on differences, but this year I plan on hiking in Peru again sometime between May-September. I was a little lucky with the weather. I believe the months with the most rain are January-March. I'm a new filmmaker and hiker, and I don't have many other mountains to go off, but the mountains in Peru are pretty spectacular.

    Fantastic video! I went to Torres del Paine, in Chile, Patagonia last year, and made a video. And just now, while I was watching this fantastic video and decided: my next destination is Huayhuash!

      I've been around that area, but haven't ventured to the Cordillera Huayhuash. It's definitely on my list now Joshua Cripps. Like you I hadn't even heard of it.

    Dude, this was amazing! Talk about breathtaking views! I´m from Brazil and I´m planning to do this trekking some time soon! One remark: I don´t thing having gone solo on this one would have been a good ideia.

    Spectacular scenery. I have heard about this area over the years, but never investigated. With your video, now I know how wonderful it is. Your video quality seems to have improved slightly over your past videos; what type of video camera did you use to record your trip? More adventurous and beautiful videos like this please!

    Hi Josh - your video convinced me to do the Huayhuash Circuit this summer. I know you said in the video that you don't recommend solo trekking, what would you say are some of the reasons now that you've done the trek. Secondly, do you still remember who/which company you worked with in Huaraz?
    Thank you so much!

    • @MonkeyandScout
      @MonkeyandScout  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike,
      If you really love to be independent, then I would recommend going solo. You can pick where you camp, stay as long as you like, set your own schedule. What's not to love? Now that I've been once and my Spanish has improved, that might be the route I'd take if I visited Huayhuash again. In the video I recommended using a guide because it simply makes life a lot easier. They negotiate all the transportation, do all the cooking, know the best non-marked routes through the mountains to the best views, and they have burros to carry your heavy gear. Some of those passes are really steep and really tall, and I'm glad I didn't have to shoulder my full backpack over them. I don't regret using a guide service at all, but you do lose a little bit of that independence. The company I went with is called Huascaran Peru and they're based in Huaraz. Have fun out there!

    Qué lugar espectaacular, con esas montañas y ese lago,,,! hay personas que vivan permanentemente allí? supongo que además de mapas, llevarán guias para no perderse .no?

      Si si! Es un lugar muy espectacular. Y si, hay muchos pueblos pequeños in esas montañas. Nuestros guias son de esos pueblos.

    What was the cost of the guides?

    • @JoshuaCrippsPhotography
      @JoshuaCrippsPhotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the time (2014), I paid ~$60USD per day, including guides, mules, food, cooking, and transportation. This did not include gratuities or national park entrance fees. There were cheaper alternatives available with different companies, but none of them gave me the same feeling of confidence and care as Huascaran Peru.

    • @rlpatton1970
      @rlpatton1970 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Cripps Photography thanks I been with guides that I thought were worth as on Kilimanjaro and went solo in Chile where I thought you’d be crazy to have a guide..those prices seem reasonable even with inflation.. full guided trips seem crazy. Expensive

      sweet thank you. do you think its possible to get it for cheaper?

    • @MonkeyandScout
      @MonkeyandScout  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are cheaper companies there. But bear in mind that the less you pay the less your guides are being paid by the company, likely the worse they treat their animals, etc. Do some research and talk to a few different outfits before you decide.

    • @MonkeyandScout
      @MonkeyandScout  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Cam. No problems with robberies or crime at all, either firsthand or through the grapevine. We did run into some angry dogs at one point but by simply pretending to pick up rocks and throw them at the dogs we kept them at bay. All in all it was a fully enjoyable experience! (Except for when I got sick).
