  • When I first learned of this place, I became obsessed. It is the most mysterious and impossible to reach place in the American West.
So, I set out backpacking to learn more about the people and things who once lived here.
What I found, might change the way you think about American History.
Make sure to subscribe for the following episodes, and a deeper dive into this incredible place.

I live in Colorado and around 1979 I was in high school I saw a black and white reel to reel film in geology class that showed what Glen Canyon was like before it was filled. That video exists somewhere. It was amazing and broke my heart. It is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever seen.

@@the_pov_channel There's a word for this "Hiraeth" It's not really translatable.....but it's a homesickness, or mournful longing for a place or home that is gone, no longer exists, existed only in antiquity, or perhaps never at all. A pull or mourning, or longing. It's a Welsh word.

It won the Carey-Thomas award in 1964. The photos are amazing . I hope you can find a copy somewhere even to just look at the photos. Bruce Berger has a great book called "There Was A River", mostly a compilation. He rafted down it in '62, and ended up stumbling onto the set of "The Greatest Story Ever Told". Turns out the River Jordan scene was filmed on the Colorado! On page 38, he tells a friend's (named Remo) story of going down the river and being able to float into a feature called "Music Temple". They reached a cleft that was 75 feet above water when Berger explored the temple in '62. When Remo explored it, the cleft was reachable by water. He and his group found a ledge barely protected by an overhang, full of artifacts from the Basketmaker III culture. A year later, the cleft was 10 feet underwater.
The whole section about Glen Canyon is ~60 pages and fascinating. Check it out sometime!

The Escalante River was always my favorite at Lake Powell. It would take you weeks to follow it all the way to the town of Escalante. These days, the water only goes up 1/2 mile before the river dries up. The river used to actually flow into the lake. It it extremely remote and almost impossible to traverse.

Do you do requests.? I have a beautiful spot,, with an overlook of the Colorado River called Canyonlands Overlook Campground.. I know,, it sounds like a busy place.. I can assure you that very few people ever go there because it is marked 4WD access only.. That is only partially true,, the 4WD part is only at the end of the trail,, less than a mile.. Its coordinates are 38.406838 -109.705323 .. It allows an almost 360 degree view of the canyons.. I have always wondered if there are any ruins around that area.. I have camped there many times with no one else within miles.. South of Moab, UT is the road to Anticline Overlook,, take that but turn left ~at the fee campground.. It is only a few miles to the end on good road then the "ledges" start about a mile from the end,, you cannot go any further.. That is where I want my "Chock Full 'o' Nuts" can placed.. (if you don't understand,, watch "Bucket List" with Jack Nicholson)

Wasn't there a lot more water in those areas when native tribes heavily lived there? So likely the water levels would've been similar?

That big mound-shaped peak, seen on the horizon in a lot of your shots, sure looks like Tokenove.

Navajo Mountain. Sacred place. Never seen any videos or pictures from the top. Rainbow Bridge is below it

@@kentkippes5773 - Yes, but it was Tokenove long before anyone called it Navajo Mountain, while that hike, or horseback, from that trailhead east of there, near that little Navajo town, is a really wonderful experience, climaxing with the approach to Rainbow Bridge. It's about 20 miles, with nobody else on the trail and no sign of humanity, no trash and no footprints.

And they call it progress. Or would it have been progress to let it be?!?? Depends on how you define progress. Something to think about!

There would have never been enough water to fill the grand canyon or even its inner gorge.
