In my opinion, the best song they ever did. I bought this LP in '72 (after buying the "Virginia Plain" single) and this track entranced me then and still does now - I'd go so far as to say this is one of my favourite top 5 songs ever.
There again, what do I know........(!)

This song is fucking awesome, Roxy's masterpiece perhaps. The version on Viva is utterly sublime but so is the rest of that record, one of the greatest live albums ever put together. The song is so good even Bowie couldn't resist paying homage via Tin Machine.

Soon this piece of music will be 50 years old and you can still hear it as if it were new. Surprisingly, you can also hear old music, several centuries old, as opposed to old literature, again and again, as if it were the first time. Music does not age. Literature does.

Hmm, that's a real problematic point of view...Would you deny that Shakespeare has nothing to say to humanity today? Or, even if you're talking about the language itself you don't think just listening to Shakespeare recited is no longer a pleasant experience...?

The first four Roxy albums still sound ahead of their time. Theg just released a live Bryan Ferry Band live show from 1974 which includes a fabulous version of "A Really Good Time" that makes you realize how good their so-called "minor" songs were.

this version is a great piece of recording luck. today you wouldn't have much chance of hearing a song as good as this in its unaltered type form. yes there are a few unintentional moments but that just adds to the brilliance . when you play this song it always stays in your head all night, ; ferry singing I would do anything for you and the sax ,guitar and keyboard in the background.

I would almost think , you never noticed , Roxy's drums ? I know they are a little bit further , in the back ground , as you call it , but pardon my comment , for me and I heard this album first , when it was brand , harry spankers and strait after that for at least 10 years , I could not start my day without it ! So , maybe this is all a bit unfair , since Roxy was one off the prime example's off bands , associated with producing a " wall of sound " and belief you me , life , they where nothing short of that ! But that is also , why I tell no more about , drums and things , find out yourself , you won't regret it .

OK, it's pretty raw and rough and hard-going in parts, but damn, it's unbelievable what confidence and ability these guys had, for such a new band. It's not like they'd been doing pub gigs for a decade or anything. There's a sophistication to this song that most other bands couldn't even approach.

Hendrix could make incredible sounds but you can't tell in parts of this if it's guitar, oboe, sax, keyboard or what the hell it is. Brian Eno was amazing. Next on the list to enjoy will be " In Every Dream Home A Heartache " - another Roxy Music masterpiece !! the reason i probably prefer the John Peel Session Is because i am a Hawklord & an old glammy / punk rocker ! - punk aint dead ! - its just revolting -revolution rock ! White dinner jackets, indeed! Kind of like Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood trading in their Radiohead chops for suits and ties? (Now there's a Monty Python skit idea in there somewhere.) Though knowing their talents they would both be thundering through the aisles of Henry Poole & Co. all decked out bringing Savile Row into the 21st century.

It's raw but see the contours of what would become their magnus opus. Glad the album-version and the viva version are so different...two great versions of the masterpiece, album version is a bit avant garde(accessible)... art-rock and the viva version is less avant garde..more rock but excellent too.

Lots of uncontrolled energy and some out of tune playing here, but in this case it's like when huge things collide in space to make new worlds. They actually know what they are doing! The last verse is so majestic.

the best version of their best song. Period. Eno’s treatments are non pareil. Nothing they did comes close to this version. Is it really Manzanara on guitar here? So plugged in, unlike him

Now I know what's wrong: it's too fast! They must have been nervous. We also tend to do that when performing. Either that, or the recording has been sped up. Apart from that, impressive.

@@reidreido I think it's pretty much perfect, but there is something about it that doesn't feel quite right to me. Of course the audio quality is pretty poor.
