Feel free to share this around. I can't post on Twitter/X right now because of a less than flattering tweet about a certain former president. Plus, the TH-cam algorithm is not happy with my change in topics, and the same goes for a large portion of my audience. I don't expect to ever again reach the views I had during the HEIGHT OF MY POWERS or whatever, but I still need a handful of new subscribers and new patrons from time to time to keep this going. I love the art that I'm making now, and that will have to be enough.
I'm a big fan of the direction your content is going! I liked the old stuff, obviously, but it really feels like there's a renewed investment in this channel thanks to these recent developments. ✊ Keep on fighting the good fight, no matter what that looks like!
I love that despite being full of murderers, rapists, and mobsters, all the real villains of the game are just greedy and racist/sexist cops, a real estate mogel, an amoral doctor, and a crooked insurance company executive... and arguably our protagonist, a war criminal made a hero with a badge whose actions prior to the game led to a whole bunch of arson and mob violence. Just like real life. 😢
I will continue to love the new direction of your channel. The world is grim and your sense of humor makes youtube a little less bleak of a place. Keep up the good work :)
Fun fact, LA Noire was originally not intended to even be an open world game. That change, and subsequent shoehorning of mechanics, happened relatively late in development and was a top-down decision made with the intention of trying to get some of that sweet 'GTA' money.
Many TH-camrs I follow have slowly become more and more insane in their videos, the common denominator is me, to me at least. I love that everyone is gradually slipping into unhingedness. Welcome!
Another video about this game claimed with some evidence that this is what was initially intended (with different prompts), but got lost in translation
I'm glad you're not too stressed about the drop in viewership, because I'm continuing to enjoy the new-old content. I am here for the meditative explorations interspersed with TH-cam poop. If I had friends, I'd recommend you.
LA Noire is very enjoyable if you go for it as if it were a visual novel or something like that. I feel like some aspects of the game, like open world, are there just there because someone (publishers? investors?) made the team chase the trends of the time.
You hit the nail on the head in that brief comment. So much of the AAA infustry seems to think the peak of video game storytelling is just recreating the medium of film in the least efficient way possible.
I started watching you for your political content. I am sorry most of that audience hasn't kept up like I have. When you made this shift, I was pleasantly surprised. It was like listening to a bands new release, realizing they changed genres, and still enjoying it. Keep it up hommie, I like what you make
I'm on the other side. I don't really care for the new content, but after years of enjoying his videos, I still owe it to Leon to give each one a watch and a like.
Even though I learned so much from your prior content, i felt a sense of obligation when it appeared. I always appreciated and even enjoyed the experience, but I had to steel myself before watching. Now, a sense of relief and accompanied your latest contribution. I know that it will be well made and engaging. I only wait for time to watch uninterrupted.
To everyone reading: If you like this game but haven’t watched the movie LA Confidential (or read the book, which is way nuttier) give it a shot! Cool video as always 😎
Dude, thanks for making these videos where you just have fun with something. I've been dealing with a lot of tough life stuff recently and am also trying to re-learn how to have fun with things and just seeing someone enjoy something with no strings attached is just, really refreshing and aspirational for me. Ive never played it, and I think it's pretty definitely unintentional, but based on your description I think there's something pretty interesting about the fact that in this copaganda game you literally can't fail, nothing you do can have lasting consequences, and as you fail upwards in rank the game gets easier to the point where the tutorial is more difficult.
As I've gotten older and have less time on my hands I've come to really appreciate linear, narrative heavy, hand-holdy games. Everything you said about it is 100% true, but I still kinda love it (except for how the story ends. I love a downer ending but this one is super unsatisfying).
I tend to know nothing about the topics of most of your new videos but i watch every one because i love what you have to say and you always make me laugh.
Hey I found you during your Political Days but honestly I like this better. It's obvious that you're having a much better time too. Keep on trucking dude
For what it's worth, I like the direction of you having fun with your life. It's more fun for me too. I used to skip your videos because I simply didn't have the emotional fortitude to rub my face all the way down in the barrel of how shitty things are, but now I never miss. It's nice to not put my face in the shit barrel sometimes.
Really enjoying the new direction of the channel. Doesn't hurt that this video made me laugh out loud several times. A wonderfully humorous discussion of a deeply flawed game that manages to be nuanced and insightful.
I feel you are being too hard on it. As someone who likes this game, i approached it as an interactive movie. Like the old 90s fmvs. I position myself for the narrative and try to play it how i think the game wants me to be. I immerse myself in the world much in the way i approach disco elysium. It isnt perfect, but it still delivered an experience for me.
but even then i find it hard to enjoy the story because many of the things you are supposed to do to get the best score are awefull like treatening a woman you know noting about witout evidence because you are supposed to know she must be a conniving B**** since this is a film noir i guess
Intro had me thinking Renegade is in his story narrator era and got excited. When I realized it was only a bit I was like "oh :(" Love the essay though ☝️😊
I ❤ L A Noire, it was a unique game and was a lot of fun. The map was amazing one of the best realistic maps on ps3. The gameplay was unique and fun. The navigation was also really clever.
Screwing up and doing untold damage while doing your job and still get treated like a hero and never facing any consequences for it probably says something about what life is like for a US cop.
yup, unless you screw up in a really public way as a cop, there is no real punishment for anything. Bad cops are like bad priests, whatever they do just gets swept under the rug and they get sent someplace else and no one is any wiser.
Weird, it looks like this is the first video of yours TH-cam recommended to me in months! I thought you'd been taking a break, but it looks like I just didn't see them in my feed.
You're not alone. TH-cam barely recommends my videos anymore, and even the vast majority of my subscribers haven't watched my videos this year. The best way to keep up with channels you watch is to subscribe, click the bell, click All, and check your subscription tab every few days or so. It's a few extra clicks but not much more than that. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my new video.
It's refreshing to hear you talk about things that interest you and not the nonstop misery spiral to hell that the world can feel like sometimes! I'm here for whatever. On a related note, I'm surprised you didn't mention Brendan McNamara and his absolutely exploitative working conditions he imposed on those beneath him.
Longtime (does it count as “longtime” if I started ingesting your content in 2019?) fan of the channel and finding that you made an LA Noire video just for me was very flattering, thanks poppa
Kinda, but it would still bother my English teacher brain. "Good" and "Bad" are adjectives referring to Cole, and "Accuse" is a verb. The camera is focused on the suspect, though. Not Cole. It also feels a little misleading. An interrogator playing "good cop" is still putting on an act whereas "Truth" suggests Cole actually does believe the suspect is telling the truth, which is what happens in the game when that option is used. I don't think I like either arrangement.
The original setup works if you think of each word as part of a sentence that describes the gist of Cole's response: I think you're telling the truth/I doubt that's the truth (or the whole truth)/I can prove that was a lie. I do absolutely think this could have been communicated better though, and I know they didn't have much wiggle room with regards to how much things could realistically change in the remaster, but Good Cop/Bad Cop/Accuse seems like a swing and a miss - for starters, plenty of the doubt lines involve making accusations. I don't remember if I picked up this interpretation of the intent behind Truth/Doubt/Lie from my own playthrough, or if it's something I was directly told by one of the designers, since I do know some people who were on the dev team. I kinda suspect it could be the latter (though I am the quintessential unreliable narrator), because both analysing game design choices with friends over several pints and making complaints similar to the ones this video levels at Truth/Doubt/Lie would have been very on brand for me in 2011. I don't mind Honest/Suspicious/Dishonest either (particularly because "suspicious" might make those sometimes quite intense doubt dialogues slightly less jarring), but I think the justification for it misses the mark a little. We're focusing on the person being interrogated because this is Cole's POV - not necessarily literally based on the camera angles, but as the player, we are inhabiting Cole. The whole body language thing was a core part of the game design (and I admit I have a soft spot for the goofiness of those cartoonishly telegraphed idles), because of course a cop would believe in analysing the body language of someone they're interrogating, so we need to be looking at the person we're sizing up - as we do that, the action is still centered on Cole, not the NPC. Truth/Doubt/Lie also reflects Cole's perspective, because it broadly categorises what he's going to say next.
When i played la noire back when it came out, the whole cheating thing being an issue blindsided me. Cole having a family is such a small irrelevant part of the game and you dont even see them except for when his wife kicks him out after. So i just thought he was getting a new girlfriend until the reveal, was a terrible twist that brought down the enjoyment of the stories being told.
I had broadly similar thoughts when replaying it recently. It was an unbelievably fun experience though - there's a certain entrance to the gallery where, if you're careful enough, you can drive your car in there and just plow people down in narrow gallery corridors
I read the words “truth,” “doubt” and “lie” as shorthand for claims the main character is making - “truth” stands for “I think this person is telling the truth, “doubt” is “I doubt what this person is saying,” etc.
The women in this game can turn their heads 190° around and yet still can't see me comin 90 mph driving down the sidewalk, beep beep mf here I come! 🚓💨
5:45 The actions were originally Good Cop, Bad Cop, and Accuse, before being changed at the last minute, which I think is way better than what they went with
i feel like difficulty levels (including very easy) are required if you're trying to promote games as a storytelling medium rather than a dexterty test. Games can have very good, very well written stories, but if that story is gate kept by player ability then what's the point in telling a story? That said there absolutely should be harder modes as well for people who enjoy both, but accessibility should be paramount if you're trying to tell a story
