Hi John! I have been looking for a Kicad tutorial for a long time and I found yours. It´s well built, clean voice and a little comedy. I used Kicad but I learned in every single video of yours. Especially the ones you route a board, you showed a lot of technics Thank youfor your Kicad series. Marcelo - Brazil
You are very welcome! When I started it for some students of mine I never expected it to get anywhere near the response that it has. I'm glad to hear that you were able to benefit from this series.
Thanks a lot for all your videos. I have been using KiCad for a few months now for some hobby projects, scratching my head about quite a few things. Your tutorials were recommended by TH-cam and have cleared up quite a few things for me and have also given me a good number of ideas on how to make life easier for future projects.
It took 3 days, (with a few breaks obviously,) for me to get through your playlist on KiCad. Thank you for making these videos. It's the most comprehensive and helpful instruction I've found on the subject. You have been a great help. Thanks again.
The only thing that will add is to the series is how to add a 3D model for footprints, those that do not have one, but if you have worked in other CAD softwares with this situations you will know how to do that. For first time users will be a little bit difficult to find how to add the 3D part.
@@issaiass Yeah. I haven't messed with the 3D models myself. Maybe some day when I record a second edition of this series (I learned a few things myself!), perhaps after V6 is released, I can give this some time.
A really thanks for producing this series. I have learned quite a bit. Getting back into it after a long absence (stopped in 1984). Back then I was using ORCA. I still remember making home brew 2 sided PCBs and soldering on both sides.
I've yet to do a home-brew 2-sided board. Now that I can get five 4-layer boards incl shipping for $25 in 1 week (from JLCPCB), I'm not sure I'll ever feel the need.
For our program of "Internet et Robotique" we chose KiCad over Altium to replace PADs for our project sequence, and that, in no small part, because of your excellent Kicad 5 tutorial series. @@JohnsBasement Almost every student made the switch from commercial software to KiCad. All CADs have their issues and we must navigate to take advantage of their plusses without falling in their zeros. Even without Covid this would have been a very good move,,,,, with Covid and the machines that some students have at home, one ++ of KiCad is to work very well without a gazillion of CPUs and memory. Your channel was instrumental to this good move and we are grateful.
Great video. I've just started [ab]using my project directory accordingly. Oh, and you have too much time on your hands to be able to have figured all of that stuff out, as templates had me completely stumped up until now! Subbed!
Hi John, really enjoyed watching your series on KiCad as we are more or less in Corona lockdown. it a good way to pass the time and lear something new. KiCad was on my list for a while but never had enought time to leave Eagle behind but the next project i will definitly start with KiCad. Thanks for spending so much time in preparing all this. About halfway now so still a few to go but did not see an episode on the RF tools which i'm hoping to use lot in the future. Regards Rens
Thanks and congratulations for this excellent series of KiCad videos ! By the way I was wondering about the proper procedure to upgrade my long forgotten KiCad setup to 5.1.5 (on a Windows 7 machine)... I finally bluntly installed 5.1.5 over the existing one, thinking everything would be messed and I would have to un+re install everything but I'm now playing around with 5.1.5 and my old settings and (tutorial) projects survived ok.
Like track widths and vias? For that open the pcb editor, set them in the design rules and save it... even though you might not have any bord drawn yet. That'll do it for you.
I have read the entire lecture. Very good lecture. I have a question. The membrane_pad doesn't work well in kicad. 'cannot start routing inside a keepout area or board outline' I get an error and can't connect. Even if you look on the internet Originally there was an error in kicad .. How can I get the library?
I'm not aware of a show/hide on a per-net basis. However, I usually fill the entire board with a poured polygon ground... Which will connect the lot & kill the ratsnest on that net. If you ultimately expect to do the same, just pour it first. You can then hide it so you can see what your doing.
@@Berghiker Hmmm... You got me. Is there a setting that turns off the footprints? Are the tracks red and/or green? Did you draw them on the front (red)/back (green) layers? If you drew them on some other layer and then turned off the frint & back then it might act that way. 😕
Not sure I understand... If you have a directory in your template project directory, it will be copied to any new project created from the template. Just create a new folder in the template project.

I appreciate the kind words! So, now that a year has gone by, I'd like to know if you were successful.

I will have to play around with this. I want templates that include the PCB maker minimums. All your Kicad videos have been great.

'cannot start routing inside a keepout area or board outline'
I get an error and can't connect.
Even if you look on the internet
Originally there was an error in kicad ..
How can I get the library?
Is there a way to blot out the ground ratsnest lines. It looks so complicated when designing the pcb looking at all the ground or chassis lines?
I'm not aware of a show/hide on a per-net basis. However, I usually fill the entire board with a poured polygon ground... Which will connect the lot & kill the ratsnest on that net. If you ultimately expect to do the same, just pour it first. You can then hide it so you can see what your doing.
@@JohnsBasement Great. Thanks. Will try that.
@@JohnsBasement How do I do this? My ratsnest is all connected. I made a board outline too.
@@JohnsBasement Can you please make a video on this. My circuit has 50 components.
Try 5 minutes into this video: th-cam.com/video/tiJApIz72tE/w-d-xo.html
All is working except I can't see the copper pads on all the components on the pcb. I only see the yellow outline and the tracks.
I have no idea what you are referring to. Gerbers, 3D viewing, pcbnew???
Does this have anything to do with templates?

@@JohnsBasement Tracks green only, back layer.
@@Berghiker Where are your footprints? On the front or back? Are they surface mounted or through hole parts?
How do you create folders in template?
Not sure I understand... If you have a directory in your template project directory, it will be copied to any new project created from the template. Just create a new folder in the template project.
