      The hydrant is either a middle of the line hydrant meaning there is no need to do it because hydrants further down the line are purged, or its a hydrant on a separate water line then what is used for tap water.

    Was fortunate enough to work in the city service center for two summers where myself and 3 more twenty-somethings got to spend our days flushing hydrants all around town... Much bullshitting to be had like 1 hours lunches, swimming in the hydrant stream, and "accidentally" blowing water mains across the city. Great fun.

      It's the Ductile Iron Pipes and manganese that cause the redness in the water. There are no lead parts. Usually the only lead found is some service lines to the houses. If the homeowner runs their water for a couple minutes before use the lead that had settled into the water is flushed out and the water is usable.

    Sand is a big one also, some of our end of the line hydrants have to be run 5 min or more to clear the sand out. Sand destroys pumps, a big expense.

    • @dnirvine
      @dnirvine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How are you getting sand in your water lines? This is nearly impossible without a water line break and flooding. If you have sand in your water lines you should be finding where the sand is coming from.

      @@dnirvine We get sand because the main pipe broke once and while the workers were repairing it, they didn't cap it off and tons upon tons of really fine sand entered the water way.
      Now that sand has settled in pipes, occasionally making it out the facet if we get summer time water restrictions.

    • @dnirvine
      @dnirvine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lazar2175 Yea, I've had sand and gravel get into the water line when I've repaired them as well. The line is suppose to be isolated using the main valves and then flushed before put the line is put back into service. The sand/gravel should not make it into the rest of the system. Not saying your repair guys did this though.

    • @dnirvine

    @WTHI-TV Sediments that are naturally in the ground DO NOT SETTLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE WATER SYSTEM!! If there was any way that sediments from the ground are getting in a lot more water would be getting out of the water lines and surfacing. The orange and red are iron/manganese rust from the old ductile/cast iron lines. As utilities replace this the rust issue will start to get to be less and less.

  • @curtisjourdain3506
    @curtisjourdain3506 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 56 seconds of the video, the fire hydrant is far too high. It's supposed to be no more than 5' off of the grade so the break away flange separates along with the barrel if a vehicle collided with it other wise the part that will break other than the vehicle will be the underground distribution pipe. Then the water will be shut down for a whole lot of people while the ground is dug up and the system is repaired.

    wasted exercise, when they flush the hydrant the initial pressure flow only grabs a small section of rusty slimy gunk from the bottom of the pipe and spits it out, and depending how thick set the gunk is the following water flow would just flow over the top of it, NRV's and BP valves fitted to the start of the branch pipe should stop most of the gunk returning to the main water feed, at least that's how it works on the UK hydrants

      Anders the pipelines that provide water to the fire hydrants are the same pipelines that provide tap water to homes. If it is just a waterline that is only used for fire hydrants they don't bother flushing it every year, only right before they hook a hose up to it. They only purge hydrants that are connected to the drinking water supply which is most of them.

    wow people are so dumb these days.. omg water from old metal valves with iron content looks reddish brown..almost the same color as rust...
    dont know about this town but alot of the old construction in my town Pre 70s is galvanized pipe... and if your not constantly moving water from it the moment it sits then gets stirred from renewed use it breaks loose rust barnacles that can flow to your fixtures and clog them up..reducing your water volume/pressure.
    coincidentally this is why you get a water softener too. hard water builds up in the small holes your fixtures use to move water around and reduce flow/pressure. water softeners can increase the lifetime of costly things like water heaters faucets and toilets for often times 4x as long as they would with hard water.

    • @flounder2760
      @flounder2760 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      as a side note if the city water dept does work in your area and shuts down your water for any period of time and you have metal pipes for your water... flush them out a outside wall hydrant first.. if something does break off and block the hydrant thats a lot easier to rectify then tearing a faucet bath or kitchen apart to get at the offending rust flakes
