    I love this video! I lived in Udon for a year in 1968 during the Vietnam war. I lived out by the airport that was an airbase in those days I was a civilian contractor. It’s amazing to see how the city has grown in 50 years and I wish I could come back and enjoy it again.

    Been in Udon Thani for the last 4 weeks and staying for another week 😜. It's a great regional town. The best thing I love about here are the parks (Nong Prajak or Nong Bua). I always go for walks early in the morning or evening and it's always so lively.

    • @craigross341
      @craigross341 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. In 2018 160 baht for an hour massage in Nong Prajak, and then a walk around the lake.

    Just discovered your videos and now I'm addicted. I have lived in Udon Thani for over 13 years. One reason I like it is because it's NOT A TOURIST TOWN. This is the real Thailand. The Thais are more honest here, the friendliness is genuine, and the city has become much more cosmopolitan. Since you're Italian and love coffee, forget about Cafe Amazon, there are many state-of-the art coffee bars in Udon for serious coffee drinkers. Good medical care here, a wonderful airport, and plenty to do, once you really start looking. The Mazada 2 is a great little car; that, or get a Toyota for ease of service and repair. Buy used from a fellow farang if possible, although some Thais take very good care of their vehicles, many don't. Espressos on me next time you and your lady return!

      Hi! I saw your comment, and it seems like you really know a lot about Udon Thani, so I just wanted to ask, would you recommend the city? I am being offered an English teaching position there, but I have never been to Thailand, and the city seems small. I am not a party type, but I still kind of nervous that it might be boring in there. Thank you!

    • @coolpapa5401
      @coolpapa5401 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Iisheell For financial and political reasons, the Thai government vastly underestimates the population of Udon Thani. Real estate agents estimate a population of about 1 million in muang district--the city limits.
      It's not blessed with natural beauty and isn't a tourist destination. Lack of tourists make it attractive for some, boring for the Pattaya/Phukhet crowd.

    Udon Thani has (or maybe had) a good connection if you want to go Laos. There’s a bus from the main bus stand in Udon Thani to central Vientiane. It leaves UT, stops at the checkpoint where you get stamped out of Thailand and into Laos. Then takes you over the Friendship Bridge and on to Vientiane. It’s all on the same bus - no muss no fuss. So much easier than going from Chaing Rai where you have to take a bus to the border and make your own connections at the border crossing.

    I was there as a contractor from the US working at the Voice of America radio station in 1993. Was there about 2 months. I rented a car from Parada car rental and became very good friends with the lady owner. I often wonder what became of her. The city looks much more modern now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

    These are real different kind of cars you are looking for! I would never buy a new one. In my opinion it's too much waste of money. It's different when we are talking about motorbikes. I just bought a Triumph Tiger Sport 660, made in Chonburi, Thailand. :-) About Udon Thani: I've never been there. I've even never been to Thailand until now, but I plan to visit Thailand in November 2022. Your videos are part of my preparation for the trip. Thanks for them! At first I'm interested in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. For a second trip in 2023 I'm thinking about a guided motorbike tour. Greetings from Germany and best get-well wishes to your girlfriend!

    Wondering if after 10 years of military service and aggressive saving / investing if I’d be able to settle modestly here soon 😄 travelled to many countries now and only going on 30; Thailand has a warm vibe and charm i havent seen anywhere else! In Asia have only seen Thailand, Japan & South Korea so far; hoping to see Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam as soon as possible 💪🏼 rural Germany is fun to drive in but maybe best for only living in the summers when Asia gets too hot 😝

    2nd hand car, I prefer Honda/Toyota one, you can find the car/engine part everywhere even you are in the rural area in- cases you have some problem with your car, for another japanese band it be easy to buy the car part as well but maybe harder than Toyota and Honda, That's why they are very famous in Thailand
    for MG, I agreed with you that's it nice design, but the QC and after sale service is not good enought being bad in some area, spare part are lack of services, my counsin have problem with the car and wait for part from China for 5 month, this is not fun at all.

    If you buy a used car here when you go to change the name in the owner book they inspect it & do give it a good looking over. They then make a valuation of it which I think are pretty much bang on the money & you pay 0.5% of that valuation in tax for transfer of ownership.

    What a lot of people don’t realize is vehicle insurance in Thailand is very different from western Countries. All you need to be legal is the compulsory government Por Ror Bor which is the disc with the year & date on it that you display in your wind screen but this does not cover much & here in Thailand if you have an accident & deemed to be at fault then you liable to pay blood money to the family if anybody who was killed. Compensation for any injuries & the medical expenses. You can also be locked up till this is sorted & they will stop you leaving the Country till it is. There are 5 Types of insurance Type one being the best & 3 the least. However all the third party insurance including what I mentioned above stays & you just get less cover for your own vehicle. For cars under 5 years old the recommend Type 1. For cars 5 to 10 years old the recommend Type 2+ or 2 & the + is just some extra cover for your car. For cars over 10 years the recommend Type 3+ or 3. I got an old Ford Ranger that is 16 years old. I insure it Type 3+ for any driver. It also has included in the cover 1 Million Thai Baht per 3rd party person & up to 10 people & 10 Million Baht in total for Death Blood money, injury compensation & medical bills & a 200,000 Bail Bond for the driver & that is with AXA & costs me 7,200 THB a year. I will try out a couple of links to a British guy who got into problems by hitting & killing an old Thai guy with his motorcycle & killing him & had no insurance to pay the blood money. I will try out another one that you can click on the different Types & see what they cover. I found when you ask for quote the insurance Companies usually only give one for 500,000 per person but I would recommend at least 1 Million & it did not increase the premium much.

    The last time I was in Udon Thani was in 1970 when I worked at the US base that was at the airport at that time. Back then, the town was totally old style Thailand, no modern stores ,no modern style homes, many dirt roads. I only recognized a few of the locations (the driving circles and the temple). Nope, I don't want to live there again, even with the huge expat community....it's just too freaking hot. 45c is not my style any more, I'll too old for it.

      I was there for two years 1969-1971. Worked at the Army base outside of town. I lived with a girl right across from the Air Force base. Wooden hut no plumbing but had a great time 😅 Many good memories 😊😊😊😊

    MG is a Chinese prototype
    You will be the one to test it.
    Avoid if possible....or lessons may be learnt...
    Buy new in Thailand...not used.

    MG looks sharp, but is cheap China crap with lots of quality problems. I would rather buy a well maintained previous generation Toyota Vios with the 1,6 Litre, 109 Horsepower gasoline engine with manual gear. We had that for 5 years before we bought our new Triton 2 years ago. It's so rock solid you need a ton of dynamite to kill it. No workshop visits except for tyre shift and other normal maintenance and annual service. Not the most sexy car around for sure, but reliable beyond anything els. The same with Toyota Corolla as long s it have not been used as taxi.
    Been to Udon hundreds of time and it is my favorite city in Isaan. UD town is trendy but expensive. There are lots of other markets with more "Thai" style and Thai prices. In fact Udon Thani is the city in Thailand with most amount of markets and eatery vs. population.
    The reason Udon Thani have been so popular among expats for many decades, is due to the american air base back in the days of Vietnam war. And the fact it is less than 1 hour to the Laos border in Nong Khai for border runs.

    MGs are cheap, poorly built and will lose their second hand value so fast making them a bad choice.. Better with a Toyota or a Mazda.
