Cheers luv. The audio is exactly what I'm after but the actual video is seemingly pretty rare. I have only ever seen it during a doco on 60's Brit music. If I ever find it, I will drop you a line.
Dateline Diamonds was the name of the film (you can get it on dvd!!) and also featured The Chantelles - and Kiki Dee. Kenneth Cope was in it too. (You may know him from such productions as Coronation Street, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), Carry on at your Convenience - or even Brookside!!) Their appearance was supposed to help the single (their 2nd) but the release of the film was delayed and didn't coincide with the record, hence no publicity, hence the single bombed... Then came Sha La Lee...
Love this song because it seemed so unusual. Then it struck me the chord progression was very like For Your Love. Turns out this song was released Nov. '65, the Yardbirds track in March the same year. Interesting.
I think this was the first professionally released song credited to Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane and so they were dead fond of it and wanted to re-use it for Ogden's. It does seem more suited to that album than their early r and b stuff I think.
Amazing...I've never seen such early footage with Jimmy winston(?) still in the band. Personally I don't think Paul Weller or any of the others "mods" from the 70's were mods. They were on a nostalgia trip while the original mods weren't reviving anything.
Here's a quote from Shawn Levy's "Ready steady go" (swinging London and the invention of cool).."the original Mods were extremely particular about their clothing...these very first mods wore tight trousers and pointed winkle picker shoes".....
What a Great Mod band ...like The Who... and I will add that the refreshing steady drumming of Kenny got The Who through the 80's(early) but was better then Simon phillips...and that creative almost unknown alt.band of T-S-Faces...what an unus...view ! Kick ass !
@highschoolmusical841 Yeah, even in the 80s, never heard of him, always those other bands. That's mass media (another thorn). I will get around purchasing The Small Faces cds AND Humble Pie AND Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance, as well. Steve should not have aBANDoned The Small Faces because of a hang up over a mistaken idea over 'Itchykoo Park' or was it 'Lazy Sunday Afternoon'.
Back fron their American tour? When did that happen? When i was in a black out? He must have had that enormous voice since birth; can you imagine a baby with that wailing? He blew us all away!
@highschoolmusical841 Yes, I never got into The Who beyond their first early songs and the 'rock opera' and 70s stuff wasn't enrapturing me, for that matter, I was never a fan of Queen, David Bowie, Meatloaf, and soft rock etc. I don't think The Small Faces truly embraced the hippie way. Did you know that 'flower power' and 'flower' children' ideas and terms originated in Los Angeles? Specificaly from Sky Saxon. It did not originate from San Francisco .
We were talking about American contribution to British musical culture (R&B) and victory in WWII over Germany (though it was mostly thanks to Soviet Russia) - i.e. history rather than just decent taste in music. You're 14 and not caving in under the peer pressure? Good on you. My daughter is 14 and started listening to rap... I hope it will blow over when she grows up... for now I just shut the door.
What a fucking drag it was talking to a Borders employee at Union Square today from whom I tried to get info. about this movie. I had forgotten the first part of the name and told him that it starred The Small Faces and Kiki Dee. He insisted and told me that there is no such person as Kiki Dee and that she would have been a CHILD in the 1960s. His station wasn't busy but it's clear he wanted this to end. I did a search typing in Small Faces movie and the info. popped up.

+American Born Patriot Seek a good psychiatrist....good Lord, you need help...
I like the small faces, especially the enthousiasme of Steve, but I understand that this song did not enter the charts, it is not a "catchy" song but rather a good b-side song.
@highschoolmusical841 Have you listened to Dick Dale? He was the king of instrumental surf music, during the early 60s. Check him out on TH-cam, if you haven't already. My sister used to see him, before he got really noticed, here in L.A. and Orange County, California. Yes. Great stuff. There were alot of Anglophiles, here in the U.S., trying to emulate the mods, rockers, and so on. One good example was Chocolate Watchband, from the San Jose area. Check them out too. Very Stones-like.
I remember seeing this song yonks ago without the dubbed over fake screaming ruining the song. It also did not have the shots of the audience or the cars and trucks (lorries) after the band took the stage. Does anyone have that version?
the guy on the first of the video says "just back from their american tour..." when in fact, they never did get a chance to tour in the US (i think they would have hit it big if they had a chance)
Actually Steve Marriot was very big in the U.S.....but with Humble Pie. Humble Pie were massively popular there but not here, conversely, the Small Faces were a seminal band here but had no impact over there. SO WHAT?..different tastes in different cultures...vive la difference!...
@highschoolmusical841 Okay, I'm not accusing you of fabricating at all , I too, would very much like to learn that information myself. Yes, in regards to Mr. Don Arden. Ian Maglagan, is too kind and forgiving of him, but he is a vile and despicable species a soul can be. Never can be forgiven for his selfish acts. Please, I may get backlash from this, but don't ask me what I would do were I to ever be nearby his final place of rest....
@highschoolmusical841 The Who weren't really mods, it seems. But, gaahh, that Jesus Christ-oh, god-I couldn't recognize the music of rock n roll anymore, I KNOW that aging plays a role in it, or it's called 'maturing' however 'maturing' is interpreted or defined , that rock opera shit never caught me getting into it. I was a kid during the 70s but I didn't quite get caught in the hounding of this group or that but I did have an active interest in music it's just I had no predessesors.
thanks, wasn't aware of that. jimmy almost hit steve in the head with his guitar. Not a way to impress the great Steve Marriott on the stage..heh heh heh..
whoah, im sorry i started an argument about countries and 'hitting it big' what i meant in my original post was the fact they didnt reach a large audience in the states and it saddens me that they arent as well known over here because of that. lol sorry for the poor choice of words
Jimmy Winston, the original organist who sometimes played guitar too. He played on 5 of the 12 songs on their debut album and sang lead on their cover of “Baby Don’t You Do It.” He was likely fired due to ego problems/jealous that Steve Marriott was getting all of the attention.
SMALL FACES. SO SO SHOULD HAVE BEEN MASSIVE,,,,, saw them a few times back then ,,,, they truly delivered every time. Gx
Allways blows me away. Years ahead of their time.
Can't get enough of this band at the mo, I love 'em!!
Best singer we've ever produced!
small faces are mod gods. pure and simple.
Wonderful clip such good quality - love 'em.
thanxs -for this great SMALL FACES video-they are one of the greatest band of all times-MOD RULES OKAY!
ultimate mod band...never forgotten.
Cheers luv.

Steve's eyes...I love this song...can't forget her...
Good clip. Nice to see Jimmy Winston.
Great to see one of the very best Bands in the world, just wish Steve and Ronnie were still with us.
Love this track!!!!
Dateline Diamonds was the name of the film (you can get it on dvd!!) and also featured The Chantelles - and Kiki Dee. Kenneth Cope was in it too. I wish I was alive....This band is awesome!!!!!
I love this track, first time I've heard it. I was born in 1969 and was into mod music in the early 1980s
I agree, the British have great bands and Steve is wonderful but also I like the Canadian band The Guess Who,
I know Garry..from the G W.....Nice guy!
Steve was adorable!!!!!!!!!
Hey, Kenney, I love this, too! Don’t know why it didn’t chart at all when it was released.
Love this song because it seemed so unusual. Then it struck me the chord progression was very like For Your Love. Turns out this song was released Nov. '65, the Yardbirds track in March the same year. Interesting.
Yes - according to Wiki anyway. Still a great song though, & I doubt any deliberate plagiarism intended. All songs come from somewhere!
What a voice Marriot had !! Top Mod
got the movie..great track..this shouldve been huge...not even top 50...were the guys still listening to the light programme...
Incredible band,
I love you Steve Marriott RIP stay cool and Baby keepgroovin'
Thanks! This was great.
F*ckin excellent clip of the lads!!
RIP stevie and ronnie
Liverpool Mods!
yeah cant agree wi ya more mate! wot a song to do so!
I think this was the first professionally released song credited to Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane and so they were dead fond of it and wanted to re-use it for Ogden's. It does seem more suited to that album than their early r and b stuff I think.
I thought Winston played keyboards in original line up but here he's on a guitar. Do you know if he played guitar aswell or was it just for this film?
Wish the roads were like that now !
Ronnie Lane always looked so happy on stage! Cheeky plonk!
So cool!!!
Oddly enough Humble Pie are largely forgotten in the States now. Of course, HP alum Peter Frampton remains legendary.
Saw them in 1974!
I prefer Small Faces to Humble Pie music, I'm American, and I agree the Guess Who are also one of my favorite bands.
TOTALLY different line up now,of course!
Obviously I'm not hip to the "whizzing" reference, but I do like this tune. Steve's haircut is brutal though.
Whizzed means speeding, the SF called speed the ' deeps' just name spelt backwards.
the haircut is the trad Mod style of the day in the UK the classic back comb
Jimmy Winston the original keyboard player before Ian McLagen. I guess the film makers told him to play guitar instead for the clip!
Anyone notice how they use the opening riff of this song for the opening riff of their instrumental Ogden's Nut Gone Flake?
Thankyou
so are you!!
Amazing...I've never seen such early footage with Jimmy winston(?) still in the band.

that's jimmy winston who was replaced by ian mclagan shortly after this was recorded.
Crosby, Stills and Nash were formed in the late 60s. Crosby was from The Byrds, Nash from the Hollies and Stills from Buffalo Springfield.
RIP Jimmy
Top!
Anyone have a quality upload of this song without the movie?
The irony is that they never got to take that American tour.
Back fron their American tour? When did that happen? When i was in a black out? He must have had that enormous voice since birth; can you imagine a baby with that wailing? He blew us all away!

Is this from a lesser known 60's cinematic showpiece?
That's Christian Bale on the Rickenbacker!
small faces, BIG TUNES! stonker!
Jimmy Winton in this one. Early Decca recording.
@highschoolmusical841 Yeah, I think I heard of Music Machine off a Nuggets compilation. I'll check out your recommendation. Thanks. Best regards.
I like the small faces, especially the enthousiasme of Steve, but I understand that this song did not enter the charts, it is not a "catchy" song but rather a good b-side song.
They’re so young
Didn't PC Plod use to be William Tell in the TV series (?)
Sounds like Ogden's Nut Gone Flake and Tin Solider
It is Ogden's Nut Gone Flake - with lyrics.
quite right they should have been ten times bigger than the beatles! amazing
Great video, they were so cute and young! Anybody know when this was filmed?
It’s from a movie called Dateline Diamonds, come out in 1966.
I think (from stuff i've read) that it was also due to bad management. They were totally exploited.
Is that Jimmy Winston(e) on GUITAR???
so, who's playing the hammond??
LOL!!
Tre
Liverpool Mods.
If you want Hubble Bennson, The Monkees are also looking for him.

Are you of the female persuasion?
you was never a mod!!
you're dead right on that!....
Ronnie was 'plonk' because of his massive member. Fact.
Who’s the 2 nd guitar player. No Ian McCagan on Organ
Jimmy Winston, the original organist who sometimes played guitar too. He played on 5 of the 12 songs on their debut album and sang lead on their cover of “Baby Don’t You Do It.”
