  • Hey everyone thanks for coming and checking out my video. I have a 1974 volkswagen thing currently at the shop, will it run? Should this be restored? Maybe help another thing live? The hard top is pretty cool on this thing! Thanks for stopping by and i hope you like the vid!

Wow , I haven’t seen a VW thing SINCE the ‘70’s . I was just a kid then . I thought they were a bit wired but also thought they looked kind of fun . After you found out it’s a runner , I’ll bet you were on the ‘net searching for prices and availability of replacement floors .
It probably sat too long with the doors off , out in the elements . If the subframe is still solid or repairable , it looks like it deserves floors . I’ve a feeling it’s still fairly solid . I’m sure the previous owner thought so too . That engine sounds good . Definitely deserves an oil change . Just wondering but I’ve a feeling it’s still got a clutch that works and the gearbox may still be good . Just hope the brakes were working and downshifting wasn’t the preferred method of slowing down . As good as the engine sounds , it may not have been beat on too much , other than left out to rust . Why does someone always have to let a vehicle go,to heck in order for us to get our hands on it ? Well , that how I got my hands on my ‘73 CJ 5 . Best of luck with it . Sounds like you did well on the wheeling and dealing part 👍

The fan shrouding is guaranteed to have rats nest covering all the cooling fins on the heads and cylinders. The Thing shares the same floorpan stampings as the Karmann Ghia. Ditch the 009 centrifugal advance distributor for a stock vacuum advance unit - the 009 is known for a flatspot on a stock engine. Nice find!

Its so rare, please restore that Thing! Normally that engine will only need a revision for the carburettor, you can get a repair kit with everything in it for a low price also in the US, New ignition cables, sparkplugs and points, spray in the distributor and perhaps new cap and finger. New engine oil!

It runs fantastic! That engine will go for another 50 years running like a real Beetle/Thing should! Do we see more of that restauration?

Wouldn’t need much to get it back on the road again.
Floor pans, brakes, maybe some wiring and take it for a spin.

I had one a lot like that. It was orange with a white top but it had a little Ford four cylinder sticking out the back and a radiator Jerry rigged into the front. It did wheelies lol and the front and wobbled at 50 mile an hour, because it did too many wheelies lol.

Those Volkswagen things are very rare to see them on the roads, the engine is like Joe the same engine found on the Volkswagen Beetles , good luck on your project.

The VW thing is the direct descendent of the WW2 kubelwagon ( did I spell that right ? ) . I once saw a TH-cam video where someone ran one head to head with a Willy’s MB . It did surprisingly well and gave the Willy’s a run for its money .
While the “ thing “ doesn’t need a front driven axle , imagine an AWD from a Porsche Carrea ( I think they had one with an AWD ? ) .
Someone must have built one already , but just a thought ….. 😎 I’m not a VW guy but the cool factor is high 👍

It figures, someone that knows very little about vw's, finds a fairly rare aircooled vdub, i've been trying to find a reasonably price thing for along long time, that top is common on things, db blaster works wonders on things. good luck

Please dump the oil out and change the screen before you do that again. you will thank me later. Then tend to build up sludge around that screen from sitting like that. will save you thousands on a rebuild later.

I appreciate the comment, after I do these old start videos I always dump the oil and throw fresh stuff in it but did not know about the screen, I will definitely keep that in mind!!
