    Why not pull the shot first..? If you gotta wait so long for the boiler to be replenished with cool water, why not use it for the shot first, then switch to the steam?

    I just received my Silvia and although I'm getting along with it fine, I was surprised the instructions didn't cover usage. It only went over first setup and maintenance. They mention it's easy to use. I guess they believe that's obvious? Based on what Gail says about the temp surfing being vital to protect the boiler coil, you'd think Rancilio would place some caution regarding it. That makes me wonder if it's really that easy to burn out the coil if you normally steam under a minute on average, but don't cycle water back through before pulling the shot? Obviously, part of the reason for doing that is to help regulate the temp for the shot (and speed), but I'm speaking specifically in terms of equipment damage. Thanks.

      @SeattleCoffeeGear  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Congrats on your new machine! While it won't happen instantly, the boiler heating element can burn out if not surrounded by water. We see this in our repair department more times than not.

    • @Blobabee
      @Blobabee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I honestly feel that SCG could benefit by adding their own instructions and caution about not cooling the boiler. That's just a recommendation (I used to work in Tech Support, so augmenting issues with solutions was a normal way to improve company and customer satisfaction). I, personally, watched many videos on the Silvia in advance, so I knew to cool the boiler, but the lack of manufacturer operational instruction sets an expectation that there's no concerns on operation.

    Hi guys - wondering if you could help us trouble shoot this machine a little. (Rancilio Silvia E with Rancilio Rocky Grinder.)
    For we feel there is something significantly wrong with it.
    For the past 2 weeks (since we received it) we have been trying to get good results.
    We have been temperature surfacing in all different ways. Grinding down to the lowest finest setting possible and are still experiencing really fast (5 seconds) flows and virtually zero creama. Obviously there is something not right. I have not touched anything else in or on the machine as yet..
    Any suggestions on for what to do next? Sorry for long post :)
    Thanks

    OMG, Gail HELP!!! My Silvia didn’t heat up few days ago. I don’t know what it’s wrong. But the heating light was lighting up, even I turned down the machin. I tried to reset the thermostat, but it still did not work. I would really like to know that is the heating element is burned down or the thermostat is down, And where can I get Spare Parts in FRANCE or on internet(220V)? Thanks.
    Sincerely.

    I purge steam through the group head after foaming, I figure this does to great things: it purges the steam as intended and it heats my group head and cup on a cold morning. Then I fill, tamp and pull my coffee.
    Is this not correct? Should I be purging through the steam wand only?

    • @kjeldschouten-lebbing6260
      @kjeldschouten-lebbing6260 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically the group head takes its water from about 2/3 up in the boiler, while the steamer takes it's steam/water from the top of the boiler.
      Purging through the top ensures you are taking out the hottest water and the most steam, it also ensures more of the heating element is submerged after purging.
      You can however do both:
      Purge most of it out of the steamer and purge a little through the group head afterwards to heat the grouphead.

    Hi! I'm seriously considering buying this machine however I wanted to get your insight regarding the overpressure valve. I've heard/read that the factory setting it comes with is 15BAR, is that true? If so, would you recommend having it dialed down to 9BAR?

  • @Shawdiee
    @Shawdiee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: After steaming, the instructions say to use the hot water switch and open the tap until a steady stream of water comes out, but you mention to do it until the orange heating light goes on. Is it necessary/better for the light to go back on or is it enough for the steady stream of water to come out?

    So the boiler is now lead-free. Is there a problem with the old one then? Does the lead leach into the water in the old model? What about other machines... are lead-containing boilers common?

    • @christopherbenjamin3891
      @christopherbenjamin3891 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ascosta +seattlecoffeegear I have this question as well, look forward to hearing a response

    • @ascosta
      @ascosta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Christopher Benjamin I called SCG's customer service and the person I spoke with didn't even know about the new lead-free boiler, said the new boiler was insulated, which is true but completely unrelated to the lead issue. She asked where I had heard about it. Really?!?! There's a TH-cam video on the channel and she didn't know? She told me to call Rancilio. Again... Really?!?! I was expecting better from SCG's customer service. Just a suggestion: this is an important health issue that might get a lot of customers looking for answers; you guys should straighten things out with Rancilio so you're able to provide better information to your customers, instead of telling each of us to call Rancilio ourselves.

      Yea please SOMEONE answer this... I don't want to slowly die of lead poisoning! ...I think I'm selling my SilviaPID lol

    • @ascosta
      @ascosta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kevin Wang Yeah, I'm now always flushing 2 cups of water before brewing. I'm considering doing a lead test (tap water vs. Silvia water that sits overnight in the boiler). It would be nice if SCG could actually do that experiment to dispel our concerns. It's expensive for a person to do (about $50 per sample), but for SCG, I'm sure it's nothing.

      +ascosta For my first home espresso machine, I'm deciding between Breville Infuser and Rancilio Silvia and I didn't know that the old Rancilio had a lead boiler as well. Do you know if the Breville Infuser is lead-free? I want to say that I'm sure that the manufacture thought about this and made sure that the lead never leaches into the water but I'm not sure.

    So, what is the mistake that burns the heating element? If I leave steam on for a too long time or if I would try to make an cofe without refilling the boiler with the tea button after steaming or both? Didn't get it. Thank you for the Update on the Silvia!

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Thomas B Correct. Having the heating element on, when there is no water in the boiler, can cause the burn out issue. Thanks for watching! :D

    It might be a bit of a basic question, but I can't find a good video on how to make an Americano with the Silvia. I'm talking about a nice, hot, big (3 shots preferred, min 2) Americano like I get at the local coffee shop. I just can't do it with my Silvia M. It doesn't taste right, or it's not hot enough, etc. I've tried with a kettle for the hot water, but still not right. Plenty of latte videos (which is great), but the lonesome Americano on a single boiler machine would be appreciated! I find milk-based drinks easier to do because the milk will often disguise the taste of the espresso shot. Keep up the good work!

    Hello! I bought a Rancilio Silvia and whenever I turn the machine on a noise comes from the steam wand until I open it and some waters comes from the wand.
    Whenever I finish steaming milk, even when i turn the wand off there is some air still coming out. Is that normal?

  • @JWomack
    @JWomack 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Gail! I've had an Ascaso Uno Professional for years. When I first got it, I pulled my shots first and then switched over to heat the boiler up for steam. After watching your videos I switched to steaming first and then surfing back down to pull shots. I swear I can't tell the difference in the quality of the drink in the end either way, so I switched back to pulling shots first, just for simplicity. I usually just pull shots, steam, (clear the steam wand) and then turn the unit off. Even considering Ascaso instructions confirm this order of operation, am I risking burning up my boiler doing it this way?! I drink triple cortados, for reference :-P
    Thank you!

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Triple cortados- yum! No risk of burning your boiler, it is simply a baristas preference for the order :D Gail likes to brew second because it is faster to cool the boiler down than it is to heat it up. :D

    I think for a home espresso machine specially if you live alone that the shallow drip tray is a advantage since you might only make 1-2 drinks a day(youk now I like pour over coffee too) there is less change of having a swimming pool full of germs.

  • @ascosta
    @ascosta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I virtually never empty my Silvia drip tray. The solenoid valve makes so that the coffee doesn't drip after brewing. Any water I use to purge the brewhead or wand, I catch with a container. The only water that goes into the tray is from the solenoid valve when you're done brewing. And that is such a small amount that it evaporates. So... No need to empty the tray.

    • @ascosta
      @ascosta 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sirion oh, but it's far far easier and less messy. I don't need to actually clean it because the water/coffee doesn't sit there for too long, so I just dump it in the sink and run water for a few seconds. Also, the container is not shallow, so no no risk of spilling when carrying it to the sink.

    I just got a Silvia, but I can swear my old Saeco/Starbucks Barista with an unpressurized portafilter testes just as good and I am a bit annoyed that I have to cool down the broiler as I don't need to do that with the Barista.

    • @RayR
      @RayR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have an old Barista to and a Silvia to. I loved the Barista (now stored in my garage). It was my work horse for many years. I loved how the Barista portafilter self tamped but.. the Barista could never get as hot as the Silvia or heat and froth milk as good. The Silvia is not as convenient as the Barista and requires more precision especially with grind size and timing. After getting to know the Silvia I can produce superior shots now with rich crema. The Silvia is unforgiving if anything is off but I love it... but I can also understand why people go with espresso appliances (They can look very stylish). I owned a few of those as well and they are very convenient but the espresso is not good and they are nightmares to work on yourself.

  • @ragnarocking
    @ragnarocking 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the Sylvia but nowadays it's too expensive for a single boiler machine with the caveats it has. There are better options out there with heat-exchangers or dual-thermoblocks. A few even come with a PID and pressure valve, for a little more $.

      If you make your shot 1st the espresso shot cools off while making the steam. Best to drink while it's freshly hot. Another reason is that the steamed milk / froth has a chance to sit for a couple minutes while you make your shot(s). Good to let sit and get the bigger bubbles out for better foam.

      Archaic design indeed. I've yet to see an espresso machine in this price range that didn't have some kind of fail-safe in the event no water was in the reservoir. Most either had a pressure-plate underneath the water reservoir, or a float inside to detect water levels.

      I have one of these machines and in fact they are very forgiving, the heating element has never broken and I have never done this procedure.

    Hi! Is the black metal base where the drip tray slides in/out is still prone to rusting? Links of people reporting the issue:

    Doesn't the Machine have auto fill?

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear

      +Reece Gock The Silvia does not have autofill, one of the reasons why the removable heating element is such a great upgrade to this machine. :D

      +Seattle Coffee Gear oh ok. Probably a silly question but I own the Breville BES920 and I was wondering does my machine have auto fill? Thank you

    Same old Silvia. Its too much $$$ for a single boiler. By the time you add the PID you're getting into entry level HX machines which are much better than the Silvia. Spending nearly $700 to have to do the temperature surfing ritual is ridiculous. Get a Quickmill Silvano if you want a single boiler (has a separate thermoblock for steaming) or a Nuova Simonelli Oscar for entry level HX.

    This machine pulls fast shots. Can’t get it to slow down easily unless I use a lot of coffee at the finest grind possible and then it won’t screw on tight. Weird
