Kintsugi, brilliant idea. I've used on ceramics never outside. I believe that people who apply gold leaf wipe the application brush on their face each time in order to pick up a tiny bit of moisture which the leaf will stick to more easily than a dry brush. A single wipe is all that's needed. Great job. Kintsugi is the technique, Wabi Sabi is the ethos, embracing imperfection.
I saw this technique used for broken plates and cups, the japanese call it "kintsugi" "healing with gold". The idea is not to hide "scars" but to include them and made them beautiful. Very comforting idea....
i visited once the shwedagon pagoda in yangon/myanmar... they plated the whole main Roof with this gold... and the story is the neighbours feel it as honour to collect their dust and the small particles of gold in it and donate it to the pagoda... it looks great!!!
When using your new windows in the tilted position, be careful that if a cat tries to go in or out through the small opening, it can get stuck and may not be able to free itself. The cat will slide down through the gap until it's so deep that it can't breathe anymore. There are many warnings about this all over the internet. But aside from that, they are beautiful windows that fit very well with your historic farmhouse. 🙂 Keep up the good work, I love to watch your vlogs! 🌞
Kintsugi uses urushi lacquer, which is a remarkably hard substance. It could be that you will need to re-gild the mends on occasion. But in any case, I love the concept, the process, and the outcome. Rescue comes at a price, but the object is worth rescuing. And I love that you honor the concept in your restoration work. Thank you.
You can take a soft cloth and buff the gold to make it smoother. Windows look great! Make sure you seal them before winter and rain. Mortar will definitely last longer and look much nicer that silicone.
I don’t know if you have gone to the Sunday market in Tongeren (Belgium) yet, but they have many vendors selling vintage architectural hardware such as door knobs and handles, shutter dogs, and anything else you can think of. It is very worthwhile. I go many times during the year.
I love the piece of art you call a window ledge!! It is so organic. I love gold. The other repaired ledge looks really good too. I would love to have window ledges such as yours. All the windows in their varying styles are wonderful. So much noise and climate insulation. Kudos to you!!
I spent part of my childhood living in Japan and have a life-long appreciation for Japanese artistic traditions. The idea of honoring the origins of an object formed by another craftsman by making damage part of its history is such a lovely way of honoring the skills of the past. I love seeing that aesthetic reflected in an old Belgian farm home.
It's not an issue in northern Europe, down by the Mediterranean you will see some but generally they just keep the shutters closed during the day to keep them (and the sun out).
Gold leafing was my trade over 30 years ago. Yes you should have sealed the lime mortar with shellac applied glue then gold leaf then sealed with shelac again this will help keep it looking good longer. As always practice makes perfect. Love what you are doing.
Illia and Mariana that is beautiful the windows it is going to be a magnificent house with magnificent views I love it and all the care put in to it❤🎉❤
All looks good we have restored some stone work some I sealed with stone sealer clear thin varnish like liquid. Some I didn’t just forgot the difference is amazing and had to go back to fix. Worthwhile as if water gets in and it freezes the stone breaks. Thanks again for sharing 😊
I can really appreciate your attention to detail in the work you both do. Fantastic effort and dedication shown.Love your newly installed multi functional windows. 😊
I love the dill repair, and the windows are beautiful. I can't wait to see the shutter catches restored, and that lovely front door will be glorious when you find the perfect handle!
What a great idea with the gold on the window sills. I love it! ❤ Copper could also be interesting, btw. Of course it will change colour, but it could be nice as well. And Ilia clearly loves his windows! 😊😊😊
Those are some nice windows It's great that you were able to have a modern function and still maintain the original look. Looking forward to seeing how they look once you've completely finished all the trim and everything. Thanks for sharing the gold process with us.
instead of lime mortar for the gap between the bricks and the window, have you considered burnt-sand mastic? That might be the more traditional solution to that flexible gap. It is really easy to make up at home - just fine sand and linseed oil. The sand needs to be very fine and very dry, so I use bags of "play sand" from the local supermarket and dry it in the oven before use. If you fill a jar with the sand, the correct amount of linseed oil is just enough to fill all the spaces between the sand, without ponding on top. Give it a good stir and it is ready to use. By coincidence I am doing exactly that today! My tray of sand was in the oven last night when I was cooking my pizza, so it is dry enough to use this morning! 🙂
I love the idea of kintsugi. Your golden cracks of window sill look beautiful. 🤩 Now you only need to seal the golden layer with urushi laquer (Japanese laquer) for weather protection.
Did you look up some clips on how to apply gold leaf? I remember you need to brush the brush along your forehead. That way it will pick up some skin fat which prevents the brush to become static and repel the gold leaf. And before applying you also need to cut the gold leaf in strips or squares first, instead of using the entire leaf in one go.
I love the windowsill repair. I’m curious to see what it looks like when it’s wet. 🙂 Congratulations on the new windows. I’d at least temporarily seal around them on the outside so that they don’t rot out. Good luck finding your door handle!!! ♥️
In Holland they did ( knipvoeg) its verry difficult and timeconsuming and that why so expensive. But i think you will love it . Its amazing beautiful on the bricks wall. 😊
Your windows are a mechanical marvel with the two different ways they can open. The handles are very attractive. A most unusual use for gold leaf, sealing a crack, as it will not rust. The windows seem to be soundproof! How luxurious it is not to hear road noise. Preparing the shutters actually sounds exciting. The metal hardware, fashioned like a person wearing a hat, was very creative and so attractive. You will surely use your creative skills to make them stunning. I am thrilled by seeing that you have released another vlog for our enjoyment. Thank you. Lyn
You live in such a beautiful area. I was wondering if you live near Flanders Field which was the scene of a famous battle during WW1. Your house would have been about ten years old during that time. I also wonder if it had a role to play in the war. Do you know about the history of it? Your place is looking beautiful. You’ve put a lot of work into it, which will be very rewarding when it’s all done.
You would make the stone part towards the windows close to flush with mortar *before* the windows are installed. Then, on top of the windows you would stick a watertight band (Compriband) which is self-expanding and would press itself between the window and the wall to seal the gap. It is important to not make it air tight but only rain-water-tight. It is important to let moist-air get out. The air-tightness is made at the inside part of the window towards the rooms. Now it will be impossible to get the band on top of the window, so you have to search for other possibilities to get a water- but not air-tight solution in place. No silicone of course.
and eventually install those films on the windows that turn the glass into a mirror. Not only protects from other people's eyes but also prevents the windows from overheating - just another idea
kintsugi seems very appropriate since you have a Koi pond. i would match the door color for the shutters since the edges of the upper window on the door show white they would be a good contrast but still match.
The light and air and ability to lean out and be part of the world from inside is wonderful. You will re-point the whole house exterior? That is a mind-boggling task.
You two are an inspiration as you continue to restore your home! Ilya - just curious about your knowledge & skillset. I know some of it is “learn as you go” but did you have formal training of some kind? What a great team you are! Look forward to every video!
All the windows on the outside, at Chatsworth, the estate of Duke & Dutchess of Devonshire, in England, are covered in gold because it lasts for an extremely long time.
Window sills need to be sealed with Osmo Stone Oil or similar sealer. Also, looks like you still have some silicon caulking to do. Limestone is a rather soft and porous material. Obviously they won’t last as long as granite sills would, but they should last for your lifetime. You guys do nice work. Thanks for sharing with your viewers!!
The stone sills they are fixing are in the same materiel as the new stone sills. Those seem to be from when the house was built 1910. So the new sills will possibly last four or five lifetimes .
@@francesconicoletti2547 You’re correct regarding them being the same material. However, the new stone sills were installed to replace original sills which had deteriorated too far to save. That means that some of the sills lasted only 115 yrs. before needing replacement. Those that weren’t replaced are still 115yrs. old. The goal is to preserve these aging original sills so that they will last several more decades. If a lifetime is 75 years, it’s doubtful that any sills will last 300-375 years (four or five lifetimes) when several have already been replaced after 115 years. I might agree with you if they were granite…but remember they’re only limestone.

Go back a few episodes, they referred to this exact technique.
i visited once the shwedagon pagoda in yangon/myanmar... they plated the whole main Roof with this gold... and the story is the neighbours feel it as honour to collect their dust and the small particles of gold in it and donate it to the pagoda...
it looks great!!!
A touch of gold to honour the object is a traditional Japanese method of repair. It's lovely.
I love the gold foil accent on the window sill❣️It’s an unexpected place to find gold, which makes the surprise so much fun.

Thanks for that concern. Something I needed to know. As I’m sure others do. Kind of your to write it.
The kintsugi is beautiful! Thank you for showing us this technique.

Looks good. There are grand houses in England that have various parts of the windows done in gold to ensure lasting strength.
Ilia, you are definitely a jack of all trades. Seems like there is nothing you can’t do! Love the door color.
You are multi talented. Now a goldsmith too. Love this channel
Pure gold is very nice there and windows and door with dark red colour was joy to see. Good luck to you all.
What a beautiful, creative idea, love, love, love the gold❤
Illia it’s beautiful, what a great idea❤️🎶🤗🎶🦋
The care and attention to detail are what will make your home so beautiful ❤
The gold is beautiful! I like the Japanese use gold to repair dishes.❤
The windows really elevate the outside appearance of the house , your choices are always perfect. And as for gold enhanced windowsills….divine ❤️
A window box of flowers will look very cottage-like.
Илья!попробуй ручку на окнах повернуть на 30 градусов а не 45 должно быть микропроветривание
The gold is beautiful. You are putting so much love into this as well as hard work ❤

I love the gold veins in the ledge. I am looking forward to the next step of your renovation; concrete needs to happen for the pretty stuff to happen.

Love the windows... but no screens! We can't live with out screens in Canada, too many mosquitoes ;) Great job De Hoeve team!
It's not an issue in northern Europe, down by the Mediterranean you will see some but generally they just keep the shutters closed during the day to keep them (and the sun out).
The colour of the shutters: same as the front door ❤👍
I like the gold scars on the window ledge. It looks beautiful.

I love your window sill repairs. Perfect.
The window sill looks great with the gold leaf! What a creative and beautiful solution.
Casually mentions "repoint the whole house!" 🤯 The kintsugi looks great, as do the windows! Nice pumpkins!
Gold leaf is gold glitter’s rich cousin. Always always vacuum, never sweep😂
Why never sweep?
well i never heard of this.... i was confused at first but then reading comments and watching the video i now understand. how cool!!!
My goodness but the window choices are lovely. You made wise choices there. Your pride for them shows happiness. 👍👍👍
Illia and Mariana that is beautiful the windows it is going to be a magnificent house with magnificent views I love it and all the care put in to it❤🎉❤

Thanks guys love the tilting window i have never seen them before
Flower boxes will be beautiful! Gorgeous windows.
The ultimate in visible mending!

Looking great, and the windows too. Be careful with cats and windows open at the top. The can try to get outside and get stuck and die.
I can really appreciate your attention to detail in the work you both do. Fantastic effort and dedication shown.Love your newly installed multi functional windows. 😊
I love the windows and the special touch of the gold fill!
At first I thought the gold on the window sill was crazy, but I love it! Great idea!
I love the dill repair, and the windows are beautiful. I can't wait to see the shutter catches restored, and that lovely front door will be glorious when you find the perfect handle!

Copper could also be interesting, btw. Of course it will change colour, but it could be nice as well.
And Ilia clearly loves his windows! 😊😊😊
How nice to see big, strong Iliya doing such delicate work for a change. love the results!
The window sill looks GREAT!!!! Compliments your home so much! Have a wonderful week.

I like what you have come up with. It looks beautiful! 😊
Love your windows.
I had heard of and learned about that technique, but this is the first time I have seen the process, we’ll done. ❤️
I love the gold, you are so creative!
Love those windows .... How they both open, and hinge to let air in...
And they keep the noise out 👍
Love the Handels on the windows😊
Windows are beautiful. Love that they open different ways. That's cool.
Thank you for the video. Have a great week.
A traditional method in the UK to seal around window frames and brick is to use burnt sand mastic. Natural and flexible
In Holland they did ( knipvoeg) its verry difficult and timeconsuming and that why so expensive. But i think you will love it . Its amazing beautiful on the bricks wall. 😊

To help your search: In dutch they call everything concerning handles, lockplates, hinges,... 'deurbeslag'

Idd do the shutters the same colour of your front door and have you thought of getting some tint film for your Windows it helps keep the heat in
Just like a treasured Ming Vase.
Please.don't forget to 'burnish' the goldleave (look up on the internet). This is necessary to fixate the gold and make it much more durable.
burnishing gold leaf
The light and air and ability to lean out and be part of the world from inside is wonderful. You will re-point the whole house exterior? That is a mind-boggling task.
Stunning
Looks amazing
