The best way I can describe the difference between ATLA and TLOK is by paraphrasing a comment I heard somewhere else: "Aang never wanted to be the Avatar in a world that needed him. Korra is eager to be the Avatar in a world that doesn't want her." Keep that in mind as you watch this show. Korra is not Aang, and that's for good reason. I can't wait to watch your reactions!
She is the complete opposite of Aang and that was always the right decision to tell a new Avatar story instead of telling the same stuff again. Ironically here, but i can imagine if it could be possible.. Korra would be a great big sister to Aang and have lots of fun. But Korra is 17 here and as a teen she is stupid and does stupid things cause she is beginning to bloom a true personality and her emotions are dancing Mambo. My teenage years are far behind me but not to far to don't understand her.
Great perspective. The detail I would add to that is their attitudes to their respective duties as well; Aang was a pacifist in a time of war, while Korra is a warrior in a time of peace.
Another difference description I’ve heard goes along the lines: “Aang is a great person learning to be a good Avatar. Korra is a great Avatar learning to be a good person.”
Just to give you a time line, it's 70 years between Zuko's coronation and Korra's firebending finals. The teaser about Zuko's mother is an enticement to read the ATLA comics. Her story is in there.
Yeah I remember really enjoying the first book and getting more disappointed as the show went on, hopefully with some time and watching it with this amazing couple I have a blast all the wat through this time.
Amon is voiced by legendary voice actor, Steve Blum. Some of his credits include Spike (from Cowboy Bebop), Orochimaru (from Naruto), and Tom (the host of Toonami, on Cartoon Network). You'll be hearing a lot more of him, when you get to Star Wars: Rebels; he voices one the main characters (Zeb), and some of the background characters.
When ATLA came out I was Aang's age and by the time Korra came out I was her age. For me both shows are the greatest shows of all time. Both of them were perfectly toned for how I felt at the time, so the fact that they're different was always perfect for me.
So many fans gave the finger for the "What happens to Zuko's Mom?" Joke back then. 😆 Understandable because at this point in 2012 i guess we don't had the Comics, which explain these events.
Oogie, Tenzin's Sky Bison, is named after Aang and Katara's love. Sokka would walk in on the two kissing and say it gave him the 'oogies'. Also, you'll notice that Oogie has physical differences from Appa. Oogie is actually from a separate breed that was kept safe and rediscovered. Same with any lemurs you see in LOK.
Aang sadly passed away at the age of 66. Using the Avatar state to keep him alive in the ice for 100 years was the main cause. Here's another example, Kyoshi was the oldest Avatar in history and able to live to be over a couple hundred years old. This was because she was one of the few Avatars who rarely used the Avatar state.
I don't think the Avatar State plays any role in age. Where did you get that Kyoshi rarely used the avatar state? Extending age has to do with meditation and earthbending as evidenced by Bumi and Guru Pathik.
Actually, it was confirmed in one of her books that Kyoshi learned a special "cellbending" to keep her body from aging, so technically she could have lived forever if wanted, that's why she died at 200+ years old, but still looking as early 30s
@bluehope42 From what I recall of where we get the long life thing confirmed for sure, it didn’t give me the sense of it being Earthbending (Pathik is unknown if he’s a bender). It always seemed to me like some sort of meditative awareness of the body to keep it in a set state.
I just wanted to let everyone know that Aang was a kid who was raised up by monks, whereas Korra was not. Therefore, they are their own unique characters with different life experiences and upbringings. Enjoy the show you two!!
While this series gets dogged on a lot, I’m under the belief that it’s because it just doesn’t match its predecessor. That does *not* mean that the show is bad, I think it’s amazing and loved every episode of it. Enjoy it!
I'm still of the opinion this show would have been on par, or greater, if only the creators weren't treated so poorly by the Nick execs. They had plans, but they were never given a second season until way late into season 1, so they couldn't set up future events like they did with Avatar, then they were told to push Season 2 to ride a hype trend, but told they wouldn't have Season 3. Then at the very end of S2, they were told to get two more seasons out, then told they were going to be online-only halfway through S3. The odds were stacked against Korra from the start
That and the fact that a lot of it is "Great idea, mediocre execution." Its not a bad show, but ATLA set the bar so high that TLOK's flaws are *magnified*
S1 still ends in a kinda disappointing way. And i still think S1 is the best season of Korra plotwise. S3 has the best action arguably of the whole franchise.
Fun fact: the four year-old version of Korra is voiced by Cora Michelle Baker (in her first and only voice acting in credit) the daughter of Dee Bradley Baker (the voice of most, if not all of the animal characters in the franchise)
if i remember right because thats a kid show or produce by a kid program they cant say dead so they say gone just like we dont see blood and dismember and other thing like that ^^
@@baki_morningstar They WHERE, in fact, allowed to use words like "dead" and "kill" and whatnot. Aang: "I guess I have no choice. I have to kill the Fire Lord" as one example.
the comparison between the 2 shows is: "The Legend of Aang was a story of a person learning how to be a better Avatar and the Legend of Korra is the story of the Avatar learning how to be a better person".
Fun fact: When Jinora asks Katara what happens to Zuko's mom, the comics hadn't been published yet at the time. Ikki cockblocking us in the show was funny but also frustrating for the fans. 😂😂😂
I’m SO excited for you guys to watch this show. It does have flaws mainly in the following seasons due to production issues but it’s such a great show. I hope you’ll like it!
Straight into Korra! Hell yeah! I know it doesn't get as much love as the original series, but it's genuinely one of my favourite shows, you guys are in for a ride that's for sure.
One reason Earth Bending has taken such a drastic turn from just trying to throw the BIGGEST rock possible is because of all the collateral damage that occurs in major cities like this. A small scuffle can result in several streets needing to be completely torn up and repaved or even knocking over an ENTIRE Sky Scrapper!
About the kids being so different. To be fair, I can see it happening. If your parents are too big of goofballs, you kinda grow up to be more grounded and serious because someone has to be, and the opposite is true as well. But you also have to keep in mind that Aang and the crew were kids. We don't know what kind of people they grew up to be, and I'd be shocked if they stayed the same... Most people don't act like they did when they were 11 by the time they have children of their own lol. It's just hard to remember that because of the life they had, they had so many responsibilities for being so young.
Very important to keep in mind that yes, Korra is not Aang but she doesn't need to be. They already showed in Avatar that all the previous lives had different personalities and plus Korra is a teenager so of course she is gonna be a bit hotheaded. They never say it in the show, but Aang died at the age of 66 because of the fact that he was stuck in the Avatar State while in an iceberg and as a result it shortened his lifespan
About the differences between parents and their children, you must understand that we met the Gaang when they were children. Their progression into adults and the dynamic with their own children is handled really well in Legend of Korra imo. Early 2026 we are getting an adult Gaang movie too, can't wait.
Toph was voiced by the incredible gorgeous looking woman Michaela Jill Murphey and Korra is voiced by the talented lovely Janet Varney. And J.K Simmons is Tenzin. You didn't notice it if he is not swearing about Spiderman 😆
@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 If it makes a difference, his use of his voice in this show is fairly different, with a few moments like sound like his now bombastic roles that creep in. His calm/stoic voice is fabulous though.
If you noticed when Aang was talking to the past avatars, each generation of avatar seems to over correct for the personality traits of the one before, which can be seen as the previous avatar's weaknesses or flaws. And their personalities are almost mirror opposites of the previous generation's. So the differences between Aang and Korra really shouldn't be too surprising.
There we go, starting on another saga. This show has many aspects that I like seem explored in the Avatar universe and, while the pacing might feel different, its definitely one of my favorite shows back when I watched it not long ago. Korra is a welcoming character to this universe and I love her personality, as opposed to Aang who we know how he was like. Is nice to see the changing of pace of the world and how we see how the Avatar behaves in such world. Very excited to go on another journey with you guys!
Aang did die somewhat young. 100 years in an iceberg in the Avatar State the entire time took a toll on his body that didn't really manifest until the end of his life but he ended up dying at 66.
If you want to understand the problems about the Equalists, you have to read the comics of Aang's Era. The problems about benders and non-benders start there and are the seeds for Korra problems in season 1, as some other problems from future seasons for Korra.
This show has a lot of highlights in both characters and story. It is always a fun watch and some if its highs are better than ATLA. That being said there are a lot of moments in the show, i won't spoil, i promise, that ignore, destroy, or retcon the world building and power scaling that the original show spent so much time to build up so carefully. Because of that I have a hard time enjoying the show for what it is. I sincerely hope you enjoy your time with it, and i'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts, and i will never fault anyone who enjoys this show. It's just not one i personally enjoy.
I’m excited that yall have finally started this series. No expectations as the original but it is still pretty good. I’ll warn you right now though, season 2 is tough to watch. The rest of the series is pretty good though. Also keep in mind that seasons 1 and 2 were written as stand alone seasons where the writers didn’t know if the show would continue. Seasons 3-4 were written as one when it got the green light, so it’s a whole lot better
@@t3haznpenguin Just that ENTIRE scene of a dozen Earth Benders in formation, gathering their power together and yelling for the purpose of lifting a S I N G U L A R R O C K
And yes, Aang died around the biological age of 68 (168, chronologically). All that time in the iceberg in the Avatar state drained his life energy pretty hardcore.
Aye on we go! There is a chance, that maybe by the time you guys get through this one, the newest series which was "leaked" may have started to come out. But I don't think it has a date yet, all info on it so far has been leaks so got to wait & see but you never know! Enjoy the series.
5:23 - Never change, Ken 😂 Fair Warning: LoK was never meant to be 4 seasons. It was supposed to be a mini series. Had the writers anticipated the success Season 1 got, I think they'd have handled it differently.
It's interesting to see a situation where the current Avatar receives the proper training when they are supposed to, rather than Aang needing to figure it out himself.
I love both shows but I will say that I still love Korra as the Avatar over Aang. A lot of people will disagree with me but she is just a badass and went through the biggest character development in the show
This is a great series...please keep in mind that there were a lot of points where they were not even sure whether they would be able to get another season. The creators of this series wanted an Avatar that was the exact opposite of Aang. Her growth emotionally is the bigger picture. And though The last airbender had time to grow, sadly this series did not. So a lot happens in a very short time.
I was never a huge fan of The Legend of Korra, but the animation was actually pretty phenomenal and the story wasn't all too bad. That being said, It was a great show, it just wasn't for me since it had little to do with the original. Knowing both of your personalities to a degree, im sure you will love it though. Cheers to a new series! P:S: They are right when they say, treat it as its own show, since it has little to do with the original. That's okay though, the series was pretty good.
Tenzin is the GOAT. Every character is great but when he shines...he absolutely shines radiantly. No spoilers but some stuff later really showcases it.
I love Legend of Korra. The legendaryness of The Last Airbender is likely to never be surpassed but Korra is just a good continuation of a world that has so much potential to be continued. Whenever ppl react to Avatar I always view Korra as "are you not ready to say goodbye to this world yet? Try Korra then!"
Avatar felt like an early industrial age but with the world coming together post the war this feels like a bit of a jump to 1920s which makes me wonder if the next series will jump to like 1960s style or possibly even more modern day.
Korra has its moments but it's not as good as atla imo, and there's a reason for that. ATLA pretty much had nickelodeon's support throughout its whole run, and it had its series planned out from the start. Meanwhile korra was the opposite, it was supposed to be a mini series with only 12 episodes, but nick renewed the show when they basically finished korras story, so they had to pretty much rush each season. Not to mention, they kept cutting the shows budget, and they even removed the show from their network when season 3 was still going, you could only watch new episodes of korra through their website at the time which was crazy, they were really trying to sabotage the entire avatar franchise. The only reason why nick cares so much about avatar now, compared to when korra was still airing, is because avatar became an even bigger franchise after it came over to netflix back in 2020
Tenzin carries a heavy burden. A gerntleman to it's core and he is a good man and tries to be a good dad. (Never forget Siblings, Moms and Dads are still and also.. just other people with issues, problems and feelings) And, in my case being the youngest and only girl of 4 children including me. It is never easy... And wait until you meet their other Kids.😆 Kya and Bumi. As you noticed of course.. Kya is the name of Kataras Mom and Bumi best friend as a kid of Aang.
Without really spoiling anything Aang's three grandkids almost seem to take on a different aspect of Aang's personality. The one boy (who's name is Meelo) definitely is more Aang's wild playful nature. The others you will see more of as the show progresses.
Katara, Zuko, Uncle Iroh, and Toph are still alive... Aang and Sokka arent as already mentioned... So, I dont spoil anything and tell you which season or which episode. I'm just saying that those are the ones that are alive. Uncle Iroh, isn't alive per say. He is in the Spirit World.
aang died at the age of 66 cause korra is 17 when the show starts. aang died younger cause his life energy had been mostly used up to keep him alive in in the iceberg for 100 years which drastically cut iin half making him only live to his mid 60's.
I liked the original avatar series but kora was good (decent if I may comedy was good tho ) also imo. XD 5:23 lol ken has dark humor like me also XD. 😂😱
The circumstances of Aang's death were never really explored, but regardless of the events he had in his adult years, one theory is that he was frozen for 100 years as a child, and thus far exceeded his average lifespan, and thus did not live nearly as long as Gran-Gran Katara here. Unfortunately.
I can say that this series of the New Generation, might be the most interesting one out there and witness the new Avatar being Korra 🙂 so with the moment with Zuko’s mother, it’s sad that it can’t be animated but there are webcomics to physical comics that contain the story. I believe that there is a TH-cam channel that cover the comic series that you both might like to check out after this series or whenever you can to discover what happen between OG Avatar and Korra timeline. Or watch a Timeline Video discussing the story at its fullest within the world of Avatar.
This series has its rocky moments: season 1 is decent, but has a lot of rough edges; season 2 is a downright slog and has very few redeeming qualities; season 3 and season 4 are just the best (3 probably more than 4, but I am very biased). Overall, the highs outweigh the lows, and the journey is enjoyable. Hope you have fun with it!

And yes, Aang died around the biological age of 68 (168, chronologically). All that time in the iceberg in the Avatar state drained his life energy pretty hardcore.
YOOOO i didn't think they'd watch it this soon! sick
😜😇
This is where the fun begins!!!! 🙏🏽💪
I am so excited you're going into Korra! I ADORE this series!
Love this show so much. Korra is my hot headed water bending queen
Aye on we go! There is a chance, that maybe by the time you guys get through this one, the newest series which was "leaked" may have started to come out.
But I don't think it has a date yet, all info on it so far has been leaks so got to wait & see but you never know!
Enjoy the series.
Would be great timing if that happens 🙂
5:23 - Never change, Ken 😂
Fair Warning: LoK was never meant to be 4 seasons. It was supposed to be a mini series.
Had the writers anticipated the success Season 1 got, I think they'd have handled it differently.
FINALLY! Been waiting for you two to start Korra!
🥳🥳
yaaaayy, so happy to see you reacting to LOK so soon!! looking forward to following your journey on this one too
It's interesting to see a situation where the current Avatar receives the proper training when they are supposed to, rather than Aang needing to figure it out himself.
lets go i luv Korra and i think you will to ENJOY!! :)
Btw Tenzin is voiced by J.K. Simmons
Its a wild rocky roller coaater but definitely worth the ticket. Enjoy.
KORRA!! KORRA!!!! KORRA!!!! KORRA!!! YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
I love both shows but I will say that I still love Korra as the Avatar over Aang. A lot of people will disagree with me but she is just a badass and went through the biggest character development in the show
Yeeeee 😎
Just finally finished the last season few weeks ago so im excited to see y'all going on this now 😅
the sadest things about seeing Katara is knowing of Sokas fate
Tenzin has Aang's airbending ability but I think he has a lot more Katara in him than Aang.
What I love about korra is that she's the complete opposite of aang
This is a great series...please keep in mind that there were a lot of points where they were not even sure whether they would be able to get another season. The creators of this series wanted an Avatar that was the exact opposite of Aang. Her growth emotionally is the bigger picture. And though The last airbender had time to grow, sadly this series did not. So a lot happens in a very short time.
The way I’m watching every “The Legend of Korra” reaction solely because of Lin😭 I love this woman so muchhh
So far we did the vibe of the show. Definitely different than ATLA. But there’s no way to repeat that magic 🤩 so glad they didn’t try
Trust me this is a great story of maturity and finding yourself.
At least it was supposed to be.
3:26 Not-so-subtle ad for you to buy the comic book.
Someone definitely should've told Korra about Collateral Damage and financial stuff.
Tenzin is the best character in the whole show. There's nothing else to say because its *fact* :v
Tenzin is the GOAT. Every character is great but when he shines...he absolutely shines radiantly. No spoilers but some stuff later really showcases it.
Here we go ❤
I love Legend of Korra. The legendaryness of The Last Airbender is likely to never be surpassed but Korra is just a good continuation of a world that has so much potential to be continued. Whenever ppl react to Avatar I always view Korra as "are you not ready to say goodbye to this world yet? Try Korra then!"
the one question i've never gotten answered about this series. did tenzin ever get his pictures of spider-man?
Yaaay you’re finally reacting to it! You’re gonna love all the seasons
🙂
Avatar felt like an early industrial age but with the world coming together post the war this feels like a bit of a jump to 1920s which makes me wonder if the next series will jump to like 1960s style or possibly even more modern day.
1:10 it's good to see you again
Korra gets a lot of hate but some reason I always come back to Korra. Such a underrated show. We’re in for a treat
ah tlok, one of my favs. i hope you guys enjoy!!
There’s a whole story on Zukos mom it’s online
(Never forget Siblings, Moms and Dads are still and also.. just other people with issues, problems and feelings)
And, in my case being the youngest and only girl of 4 children including me. It is never easy...
And wait until you meet their other Kids.😆
Kya and Bumi. As you noticed of course.. Kya is the name of Kataras Mom and Bumi best friend as a kid of Aang.
KORRA GANG, GET IN HERE 🥳🔥🍻 sorry Aang babies, OUR TIME TO FEAST
Without really spoiling anything Aang's three grandkids almost seem to take on a different aspect of Aang's personality. The one boy (who's name is Meelo) definitely is more Aang's wild playful nature. The others you will see more of as the show progresses.
7:18 👀 💪
Katara, Zuko, Uncle Iroh, and Toph are still alive... Aang and Sokka arent as already mentioned... So, I dont spoil anything and tell you which season or which episode. I'm just saying that those are the ones that are alive.
Uncle Iroh, isn't alive per say. He is in the Spirit World.
Tenzin sounds like he wants pictures of a certain superhero. :) the punchline is that he's voiced by J.K.Simmons.
aang died at the age of 66 cause korra is 17 when the show starts. aang died younger cause his life energy had been mostly used up to keep him alive in in the iceberg for 100 years which drastically cut iin half making him only live to his mid 60's.
I liked the original avatar series but kora was good (decent if I may comedy was good tho ) also imo. XD 5:23 lol ken has dark humor like me also XD. 😂😱
😜😈 dark humor can be fun
The circumstances of Aang's death were never really explored, but regardless of the events he had in his adult years, one theory is that he was frozen for 100 years as a child, and thus far exceeded his average lifespan, and thus did not live nearly as long as Gran-Gran Katara here. Unfortunately.
He died at 66
@@carlosalbertoalcazarandrad5348 Ah okay. Thank you for solving this mystery. This information was totally new to me.
If ya want to know about Zuko’s mother look up the avatar comics
yay korra time, finally!
Toph voice actress did not voice Korra. But she does do the voice of a character in a later season... not spoiling tho
Just wait for season 3
YEEEESSSS I COULDN'T WAIT
😎🤘🥳
Korra!!!
I love the Choreography and villians and bending. Not the romance but i dont like ATLA romance either.
And I really love the animation style
