- Faerie Tale Theatre's adaptation of Thumbelina is one of their most imaginative, featuring Carrie Fisher in the title role.
A lonely char-woman (Conchata Ferrall) is given a magical barley seed, which sprouts into a lovely flower. When the flower opens, out pops beautiful Thumbelina (Carrie Fisher). The char-woman's wish to be a mother has been granted, and the pair could not be happier. But Thumblina's happy life with her mother is short-lived when the tiny creature is kidnapped by Mother Toad...

I just love how Thumbelina is reunited with her mother even though she found love in the flower prince. This plot hole being resolved made this one of my favourite versions of the fairy tale.
Today, in some other versions of the story, Thumbelina meets her mother again after marrying the fairy prince.

Carrie Fisher is my favorite Thumbelina (aside from the animated Don Bluth version)! I like the costumes she wore in this movie, and the exquisite, artsy atmosphere (especially with a low budget)!
It's also interesting to see Conchata Ferrell in such a radically different role from "Two and a Half Men!"
Thumbelina represents the pure spirit within all of us. She symbolizes the child we hide within our hearts. Her journey is lovely metaphor for our childhood. For every childhood is journey in itself. A pure and gentle spirit is a highly cherished treasure. A woman's beauty is measured by the size of her heart.

im half convinced the field mouse cared for her, if not on a romantic level the at least on a close emotional level of some sort. I think he knew deep down once she set foot outside the hole she wasn't going to come back and he let her go any way.

I was thinking it too. The way he lightly waved goodbye is what convinced me that Thumbelina will escape from an unwanted marriage with mole.
In some of the adaptions the mole or the frog tries to marry Thumbelina
When I was 6, I longed for a chair just like Tommy Ross' squishy flower. These sets were incredible, and the swallow costume/performer as well. You don't realize those things as a kid. All you see is a beautiful world you wish you could actually experience.
Rest in peace, Carrie Fisher. I can't believe it - I re-watched this episode (since it's one of my favorites from FTT) about a week ago before all this happened.

I'm glad that this version of the story has Thumbelina reunited with her mother, unlike the original story of which she never sees her mother again after marrying the fairy prince.
I was so happy too. This was the one part that was never resolved. Shelley Duvall and Don Bluth’s versions are my fave adaptations to this classic.

I'm so glad I found this version, cause all I ever heard was the 33 1/3 record story where she never saw her mother again, and I always thought how horrible an ending that her mother never knew what happened to her little girl, and how sad she must've been the rest of her life! 😢
It always seemed like a tragedy in the end to me as a child, but somehow I missed this version!
Had to wait till I was 53 to finally get a happy ending! Wow! 🤨🤗

This one was my favorite out of all the fairytale theater movies (at least the ones I have seen), in my opinion this was Carrie Fisher at her absolute best outside of the original star wars trilogy, god rest her soul

Fairy tales were originally harsher, scarier, more explicit ... or so I have learned from Clarissa Pinkola-Estes.
+tm13tube Someone should make a Faerie Tale Theatre that tells the original stories like the stepsisters cutting off their flesh in Cinderella, although this show did tell the original Little Mermaid tale, but of course that was before Disney's version
Carrie had such a beautiful voice
You can really hear Debbie in her speaking. Two parents with nice voices, she was bound to have a good one. Shame that it transformed into something deep and gravelly as she aged. By the time she was doing "Wishful Drinking" you'd never know this was the Princess Leia Organa's voice, but such is age and time and a bit of self-damage.

Well, I can definitely understand why Carrie (Thumbelina) didn’t want to marry Herman Toad. He gives her too much PTSD from being Jabba the Hutt’s slave considering Herman and his mother almost resemble Hutts.

Familiar faces in this production, from The Penguin of TV's 1966 Batman show to Tommy Ross (King of the Prom until a bucket of pig blood was spilled).
Fun fact: When George Lucas and Brian De Palma chose to hold auditions together for Star Wars and Carrie in the 1970s, they saw all kinds of young actors, among them: William Katt (seen here as the Prince, and he was also the star of the 80s thriller House, and the TV show The Greatest American Hero) and also Carrie Fisher (our sorely missed actor, author, princess, and all around hilarious person). Katt and Fisher were so good looking in this video, although I do prefer his hairstyle in Carrie.
Andersen's Thumbelina is one of the best fairy tales. I hope parents and grandparents and babysitters still read it to children at bed time.
