Cab Ride - East Croydon to Orpington

  • A ride aboard a Plasser 09 type tamper from East Croydon to Orpington. This requires reversal in the tunnel at Crystal Palace, which is shown fully. After Orpington, the machine reversed again and went into Hither Green PAD, but as I have shown this in my Paddock Wood-Hither Green video, I did not record it again.
    Incidentally, I neglected to add a caption explaining that once on the Tonbridge Loops, signalling passes from Victoria Eastern (VS) to Ashford IECC (AD)
    At Hither Green, one of the tampers was dropped off and shut down, and one came back out and continued to Ashford International. That entire journey will be the next upload

    Back in the early 60’s I was visiting relatives who overlooked the rail line & Birkbeck cemetery. Looking out the bathroom window in the gloom I heard the clanking of a steam loco. Sure enough an old SECR C class loco wheezed her way along the track. Seeing you passing through Birkbeck brought it all back.

    Excellnt video, thank you. Changing ends 𝑖𝑛 a tunnel must be a fairly rare event; can't think of anywhere I've seen it happen before.😁

    As I remember it, the connection that was lost, which you say linked East Croydon and Beckenham Junction, actually went through to NORWOOD JUNCTION and was useable only in the "towards Norwood Jn " direction. I think it's only regular user was a coal train from one of the Kent collieries to Croydon's gas works, along the West Croydon - Mitcham - Wimbledon line (later converted to a tram line).
    I did ride over this single track, single direction line once - on an enthuiast's special which sought out bits of line generally impossible for the public to cover.

      It does seem ironic that you cannot get to Bromley through Bromley Junction without an awkward reversal at Crystal Palace. It's a shame that this link was removed. As someone who has lived in the area for 20 years, you'd be surprised at how many people want to travel between local towns without having to bounce off of Central London. Bromley to Croydon is a very popular journey for locals and is currently only possible by car, or via a 40 minute bus ride.

    Thank you so much. This is the first time that I've been through a Tonbridge Loop track. I've been wanting to ride it for years. Please do unusual routings like this more often !! Video people just don't seem to think it is sexy enough to do these strange loops and ramps, an so on. This is so much more exciting than just going up and down the Brighton main line ad nauseam; that's been done over and over. DO MORE STRANGE ROUTINGS !! Pretty please. I am subscribed with all notifications, and I always give a thumbs up. Aarre Peltomaa

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, these odd loops are quite normal. I try to record as much as I can, especially when it’s interesting track. It’s just having a daylight run, otherwise you can’t see anything on the screen

    Excellent video. It shows common sense to the viewer where station names are shown and the various routes. I’m afraid some of these cab view videos do not show these details I think they assume people viewing all live in the area being shown. Well done can’t wait to see more in the future 10 out of 10

    The track going off to the left at 27:07 - the up Chatham loop - does anything still use that bit of track? There's a lovely footbridge over it with no caging and the track is still wooden sleepers. I waited for some pictures down there but nothing came along.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think there’s much. Only used I think when there’s engineering works and trains from
      St Mary Cray turn towards Chislehurst. I have seen MPVs using the downside spur in both directions as it’s bidirectional, but I’ve never seen this spur used

    Basic question Emm…how do the controllers know you are doing this journey please? Do you submit the plan beforehand to a central office or do the signallers find out that day on a work schedule and fit you in amongst all the traffic? I’d be interested to know how the preparation involved works.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All routes are logged with Network Rail planning. They find a path to fit around other traffic. You have normal working timetable services, or STP (short term plans), or VAR (variances such as small changes due to engineering works), or VSTP (very short term plan) which is very very last minute runs

      Vehicles need moving between sidings depending where they’re working the next shift. In this case, we’d worked from East Croydon sidings on a job at Balham, whereas their next shifts were into Kent, so one machine was dropped at Hither Green, the other went to Ashford

      I don’t have any choice at the moment. Because the camera is mounted with a suction mount it’s quite close to the glass. As you’ll note from the thumbnail, the glass is angled, so the camera is forced to look up a little

    You need to be careful with your subtitles. Some are unreadable, particularly when you let a dark text go over a batch of dark trees.
