They got a Grammy, Bret has an Oscar, and Jemaine’s shows (Wellington Paranormal and What we do in the Shadows) have been nominated for a lot of awards
I've seen a lot of people saying it's a parody of Piano Man. It definitely ISN'T. Go and listen to Where Do You Go To (My Lovely) by Peter Sarstedt. It's basically the same song, right from the melody to the style of the voice and lyrics
+Aaron Gillie (Bad Scooter) I was thinking the same thing. I was listening to that song yesterday, and it kind of struck that "why the hell is this familiar" feeling.
Hahaaaa. Just came here because that song is on TV 'he sent you a race horse for Christmas and you kept it just for a laugh'. You could play a good game of which song did the line come from!
It's not a parody of the Peter Sarstedt song specifically, but a humorous take on the whole genre of 60's/70's troubadours, which also includes 'Piano Man'. You could argue that the melody and the 'heartbreak' approach are similar to Sarstedt's; but the lyrics have nothing to do with each other. This is a pastiche of cliché, badly written, too-deep-for-you 'poetry'; while Sarstedt's song is the very real description of a celebrity's life, and how that knowledge, and her apparent rejection of her past, disturbs an old flame. There is no 'poetic' pretentiousness in Sarstedt's lyrics.
@@jacktadash Nah, it's really not. Similar styles, but one's a clear parody of that style while the other is a serious song. Similar but nowhere near the same song.
"The girl I described - she's as real as the wind. It's true I saw her today. The other details are inventions because I prefer her that way." Sucker punch my emotions then, why don't you?
My mom said that as soon as it started to play! I realized it when I was trying to sing it in the shower, and it came out as "Now Paul is a real estate-novelist, who never had time for a... Hey wait a second!" Seeing as FOTC are second only to Billy Joel as my favorite artists, I guess you can see why I love this one so much! XD
Even though this song is a bit of a micky-take, I would definitely still melt if Bret sang me this. He is just incredible. I mean: 'your beard is woven of heartache'... Just wow.
The other inventions are details, Because I prefer her that way. This season is wonderful! Love the pisstakes of various music genres. Brett is an amazing musician.
I think that though the tune is "Piano Man", the song is a pastiche of "Where Do You Go To, My Lovely". If it sounds mysterious and French and metaphorical, that's why.
Last I heard, they weren't sure if they wanted to make another season, since it takes longer to write and film a season than it takes making an album, plus they have to write more songs than they would for an album.
The lyrics and the general feel are a lot like 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely' by Peter Sarstedt - seems a lot more like that song than the Billy Joel one to me
"It's sooo hard to get through one because you have to record two albums worth of material, and write a sitcom at the same time it would take to do an album," Clement said. "The next time, we have to write the songs as well, it's even harder. So, I don't know, it doesn't seem worth it for us, I guess." The final decision on the future of the show will be taken next month, but, according to Jermaine, they are leaning against another episode.
I was in a cafe the other day and suddenly was like OMG they're playing flight of the conchords! But it turned out to be Piano Man. Which this is a spoof of. Dammmmmn.
@FOTC0123 It might just be me, but i think at the "She handed me a broken memory A keepsake to forever-more save" bit, he says Say, not save. not 100% on it but it seems to be
It's not Piano man. The progression is similar, but its OBVIOUSLY Peter Sarstedt 'Where do you go to my lovely" with all the romantic parisian imagery.
you messed up on a few lyrics i do believe. She said "your beard is woven of heartache We'll drink for the lonely tonight" She looked like a chocolate eclair Thats rare but thats just what i hear when listen to the song
A great, long joke of the show is that when they play as a band, they play songs like Rock the Party, really basic and meant to be crummy. Then in this other world that doesn't actually count, they make songs like this, where the parts are pretty complex and a ton of thought went into it. But they dont play any of that stuff at their gigs in universe. That's funny to me. Like they COULD... and they CAN... they just dont.
As much as I know this is a parody of an Elton John song or something, every time I listen, for some reason, "Your beard is woven of heartache and we'll drink for the lonely tonight" somehow always strikes me as very profound, haha.
its like suga lumps with my humps (blacxk eyed peas). though they dont sound like eachother. though i believe its a parody of that song. though this definitly isnt a parody though all the songs of season two either sound like a song or is a parody of a song.
I love Jemaine's bit in this. Kills me. Every time.
Or Jermaine's "but".
This song is every guy from 14 to 30 whenever they see a pretty face.
It's Hell.
The sandwich fillings get me every time
I just love how Jemaine, once he sees that Bret really loves this girl, is so nice and joins in the song with him.
True friendship.
Ha ha so true. Doesn’t even care about not having the bread.
This song is the bastard child of “Where do you go to my lovely” by Peter Sarstedt and “Piano Man” by Billy Joel.
Exactly!!!! It's just dripping with it
I just listened to Where Do You... (one of my parent’s favourites) and I was like ohhhh I get that punchline from that show I watched 13 years ago
Man, what beautiful song.
HAHAHA
"Which part's true?"
"I .. saw a girl."
Lolol
This is soul inspired. Everyone has one. But these guys souls are awake.
i wish these guys got the attention they deserved =(
Yes. Yes they do.
@@shannoso6918 now they do
Bret has an Oscar, they get recognition from people that know their talent
They got a Grammy, Bret has an Oscar, and Jemaine’s shows (Wellington Paranormal and What we do in the Shadows) have been nominated for a lot of awards
I'm impressed that Jermaine knows his Shakespeare trivia.
"She reminded me of a winter's morning"
"What? Frigid?"
lol

A brief taste of love is as sweet as any
Love Brett's sweater as always.

Probably one of the best scenes in the season.
i want a beard that is woven of heartache
LMAO
-She was like Shakespeare's Juliet...
-What, 13?
That part always cracks me up lol
It's incredible how many retellings omit that bit.
Never gets old.I had to listen to this again. I just "saw a girl" in the shops and this instantly came to mind 😁
it's funny the effect they can have
" Her eyes where reflections of eyes" that must be the most poetic thing I ever heard. And I studied literature.
Even though this song is a bit of a micky-take, I would definitely still melt if Bret sang me this. He is just incredible. I mean: 'your beard is woven of heartache'... Just wow.
This is the absolute funniest of funny. Nothing is better. It's perfect.
0:31 - I love the fact you can see someone's hand take the sax. Why is that so funny to me?
That... that's a bass clarinet.
He even said the name of the instrument in the song... 😂
Because it's a bass clarinet. Lol
This is their best song. It's not the funniest, but it describes a very real feeling that a lot of socially uncomfortable guys can relate to
"did u get the bread ? See i have been waiting here with all my sandwich fillings"
Still my favorite show
this is my favorite smiths song.
which
All of them.
Ya. You don’t know what your talking about. 1) this is comedy. 2) this is poetry gold compared to the one you suggested
Sorry wrong comment
it is my 75th favourite
Good song😊
My brother's been listening to that song a lot, I think that's why this song has been in my head for the past week
love these peeps
The other inventions are details,
Because I prefer her that way.

Great line. Stands out.
Aargh. Man, I'm gonna miss them if the show ends.
Well...do you miss them? Because I sure do.
Weirdness
I miss them so much they're so underrated 😔
That was Eugene. He was fixing the shower :P
This is what I want. I want this fantasy
What a beautiful song
"whats that mean?" lol awesome
The double maybe came up in my head randomly lol
this is my favourite song from the second series
I love this so much and I don't even know why.
RIP Peter Sarstedt
GENIUSES!
I think that though the tune is "Piano Man", the song is a pastiche of "Where Do You Go To, My Lovely". If it sounds mysterious and French and metaphorical, that's why.
They're not working on it yet, since the band's working on a new album. But once they're ready, they'll begin production.
this is my all time favourite fotc sooong :)
Very Billy Joel-like at the start
Piano Man! That's what it reminds me of.
what - 13??
What-dirty?
I’m getting a Beatles and Piano man vibe with this song
Can't wait for the next season!
This secret Cherie sounded like a very wonderful girl. Even though Bret made 95% of that up.
Last I heard, they weren't sure if they wanted to make another season, since it takes longer to write and film a season than it takes making an album, plus they have to write more songs than they would for an album.
The piano was so good! More artists should build on each others songs.
wow, nice finding dude
There's going to b another season??? NO WAY!!!
The lyrics and the general feel are a lot like 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely' by Peter Sarstedt - seems a lot more like that song than the Billy Joel one to me

her eyes were the reflection of ireland
***** lol
Ah, thank you! It is reminiscent of that. I've always wanted to know what the actual inspiration for it was, I just guessed Elton John.
@megaman351000 A Wurlitzer E-Piano (an a200 by the looks of it), and some toy keyboard, probably a Casio or something like that.
Where can i get the awesome painting of the black dog?
She reminded me of a winter's morning
(What, frigid?)
This is actually called 'Rambling Through the Avenues of Time," it's on the new album
i like that the chalkboard behind them has a kiwi drawn on it.
I was in a cafe the other day and suddenly was like OMG they're playing flight of the conchords! But it turned out to be Piano Man. Which this is a spoof of. Dammmmmn.
She looked like a perisian river
What dirty?
Anyone got tabs for Jemaine's Bass?
It goed dunn dunn dunn dunn.
Hope that helps.
@FOTC0123 It might just be me, but i think at the "She handed me a broken memory
A keepsake to forever-more save" bit, he says Say, not save. not 100% on it but it seems to be
That makes no sense. Lyrics are on the video, anyway.
How can i learn the piano Part? Im so angry!
@gettingkilt Thought the exact same thing too the first time I heard it.
reminds me of that Piano Man song by Billy Joel
You can’t cut jemaine grunt at the end, it is part of the song
days went by years went by... when was this? lol
His left and right arms switch when playing the keyboard. Weird. Great song though
Okay but lavender cigarettes are incredible
I don't think it's a parody but it does have a similar ring to it.
The question for the concords is not if they could, it is if they want to make another season.
story of my life
It's not Piano man. The progression is similar, but its OBVIOUSLY Peter Sarstedt 'Where do you go to my lovely" with all the romantic parisian imagery.
what maiden song do they parody?
its her eyes are reflections of eyes, i thought. theyre hilarious xD
Where'd you get that quote from?
And did you mean (with your last statement) that they're leaning towards not doing any more episodes?
anyone notived that he uses the "piano" thingy changing hand while playing it?
also it is "Her eyes were reflections of ice"
?
you messed up on a few lyrics i do believe.
She said "your beard is woven of heartache
We'll drink for the lonely tonight"
She looked like a chocolate eclair
Thats rare
but thats just what i hear when listen to the song
"Her perfume was Eau De Toilette"
"What does that mean?"
Water of Toilet.
I shit you not.
...😑No one needed you to tell them that. At least, no one with half a clue about cartoons needed it.
"Bret, did any of this actually happen?"

no prob
these guy's are the Simon and Garfunkel of comedy.
Fuck Simon and Garfunkel.
I think its - She looked like a parisian river , not a persian river.
What is this to the tune of?
mmmmmm...MAYBE!
Sounds a bit like The Kinks' "where do you go my lovely"
That was by Peter Sarstedt.
As much as I know this is a parody of an Elton John song or something, every time I listen, for some reason, "Your beard is woven of heartache and we'll drink for the lonely tonight" somehow always strikes me as very profound, haha.
I'm trying to watch tv.
Ya, that's what he says.
0:31 friendly little hand
"Oh, when was this?"
Which Elton John song?
To me this is 95% Piano Man by Billy Joel...
its like suga lumps with my humps (blacxk eyed peas). though they dont sound like eachother. though i believe its a parody of that song. though this definitly isnt a parody though all the songs of season two either sound like a song or is a parody of a song.
bret did any of this actually happen
sing us a song your the piano man
