  • The Gibson Les Paul Goldtop changed the world of guitars when introduced in 1952 and created one of the most significant guitars in rock n' roll history. The years leading to the perfected "holy grail" years, tell a story of great innovation and historical importance that you can see change from year to year. This is their story told by the owner and the vintage specialist of Chicago Music Exchange. Recently acquiring a consecutive collection of Goldtop's beginning with the first year 1952 extending to 1956, these guitars individually show every change made to each model that lead to creating the worlds most important guitar.
    Do you own one of these? Want to sell or trade it for something new? We buy and trade!

    I am honored to have found and bought an Early 1953 Goldtop , from a guy who had owned the guitar since 1974. I found the guitar on craigslist, spoke to the owner over the phone, and before i knew it, I drove nearly 1000 miles in one day to purchase it. I paid $3000 for it. It is an early 1953, and does not have a serial number, has never been refretted, still has the original pots in it, (dated 1952) . It was refinished actually very well in gold, and was converted to humbuckers and a tune-omatic style bridge in the late 70's. However i do have a few of the original parts for the guitar, and im planning on restoring it to its former glory. It has alot of age and beauty to it, and im still in shock that i own such an incredible peice of guitar history.

    I had an old Gibson Les Paul and loved the damn thing, I really love the collection you guys are showing, sooo much history there from the guitar world!!! Old Gibson Les Pauls are beautiful. But some how my body and mind, hands, fingers can let go more on a Stratocaster, a good quality strat is more my type...Although I love to see great musicians who can make a great Les Paul talk though. It's ALL about being super comfortable with sound and feel. My personal opinion is both types are incredible!!! But I am a Stratocaster lover myself... Peace

    I got one in 1994 from a family friend. They gave me a 52' Les Paul, a Maestro Fuzz Tone distortion pedal, and a 52' Gibson GA-40 amp. Sadly, I traded the Fuzz Tone for a Boss DS-1. When I got it, the guitar was in mint condition. Now, it has tons of wear (i.e. the paint has worn off, it's been shoved through an amp, it's been smashed through a wall). I stopped the abuse in the late '90s, but I never expected to still have it.

    6:20 cuz like, bronze has a lot of copper in it and copper is what is actually turning green? Also, if any red coloring fades, you will be left with nothing to cancel anything green so that can also happen (complementary colors cancel each other, red/green blue/orange, yellow/purple, etc).

    Last year I went to a Gibson showroom in Yaesu, Tokyo. I tried various guitars but the best thing I wanted was the Les Paul of the gold top with the p - 900 pickup. (Google translation use)
    I remembered a happy moment at that time with THIS video. Thank you.

    There's a little reverse logic at 6:50... He says "it's not unusual for a very worn instrument to feel great... it obviously feels great cause someone played it a lot..." I think that a guitar gets played a lot because it feels great, not feels great because it gets played a lot... This is why I am always wary of "Mint w/tags" vintage guitars... they are probably dogs... They were the guitar that someone grabbed off the rack, said "Eh, not too hip..." put it back, grabbed the next one, said "YEAH!! This is the one..." 60 Years later, guitar #1 is still in great shape, while guitar #2 is beat. Cuz someone played the snot out of guitar #2, died, someone else got it said "YEAH!!!" played the snot out of it... etc...

    Les Pauls Log was rejected in the 40's but what it was that made Gibson warm to the idea of producing a solid Electric guitar was Leo Fender started to make one. when Gibson heard about that they said: Find that Guy with the Broomstick with pickups on it.

    I have a 53 with trapeze bridge. Got it in late 60. My brother found in a pawnshop in southern California and my parents sent him the money to get it for me. It cost 65 dollars for the guitar and 35 dollars for a Gibson amp. I still play the guitar and it plays great. Amp gave up the ghost many years ago.

    Wilandovsky You don't like the hardware? Then switch it. But plenty thousands of people find the Les Paul to be a perfectly suitable and functional instrument. I've almost never snapped a string on a Les Paul, at least not any more than any other guitar, I've gotten plenty of sustain out of a Les Paul, and rarely have i gone out of tune on one (I actually go out of tune more on my strat which people say never go out of tune). Maybe you've simply had a bad couple Les Pauls, or maybe they just don't suit you. But that's no reason to bash the guitars or the people that they have suited for such a long time.

    • @guitargeekforjesus
      @guitargeekforjesus 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a les Paul, but I'm hoping to get one soon. I've broken about 5 strings during sets on my Tele :-)

    • @mrmapegothe13th
      @mrmapegothe13th 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      guitargeekforjesus They are great guitars, much warmer and deeper than a tele or strat. They are not for everyone though, just like a tele or strat isnt for everyone. None the less you will probably like it.

      Jimmy Gilmour I played a mid range one at guitar center and really dug the feel of it. Saving up for a custom shop 1960! I'm a huge jimmy page fan and I've always enjoyed the tones he's got. Looking to pair it with a tweed though instead of a Marshall. Love the meatiness of the les paul tone. And btw, thanks for being a decent human being with your reply :-)

    • @mrmapegothe13th
      @mrmapegothe13th 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      guitargeekforjesus No problem, and there you go! Those reissues and custom shop models based on the ones from the 50's and 60's are awesome. I'm looking to get a 1959 reissue VOS soon and I'm excited. You'll definitely have a guitar suited to Page with that Les Paul, but I don't know how close a Page sound you're going to get with a tweed, as he pretty commonly played a marshall that was cranked to max. Either way that Les Paul will do you well.

    • @Wilandovsky
      @Wilandovsky 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      guitargeekforjesus Note that the VOS series is yet another major 'gotch'ya' product sold by Gibson to cork-sniffers. There's a number of reasons for it, which of course don't matter, because if somebody likes the looks of the product and the advertisement behind it, they will buy it anyways, and the G-company know about it and take advantage of it (among these reasons is the fact that VOS Les Pauls sound WAY different that the early Les Pauls and very different from Page's guitar, old Les Pauls used unspotted pickups which picked up microphonics, the VOS series uses regular wax-potted pickups, which do not pick up microphonics but Gibson, of course, will not tell you that in the specs). I'm not bitching here, I own a Gibson guitar myself, I'm just telling you the truth.

    The truth is, apart from a few cosmetic suggestions, Les Paul had very little input to the initial design of the guitar that bears his name. Ted McCarty and John Huis did most of the work. Les Paul’s involvement was largely driven by marketing and the need to create a stir that would direct attention away from the emerging Fender guitars. They succeeded! I’ve never understood why the 57 gold top is seen as inferior to the 58/59 sunburst guitars. As these guys point out the 57 gold top is the birth of the modern Les Paul. Little has changed in terms of the basic set up and build, although probably the new guitars are of a significantly higher quality - I doubt if the paint would chip and fall of a modern LP so easily.

    My 1sy guitar teacher had one of these with p90s i forget which one it was but he did say it was from the golden era and it was worn out lioke the 55' here. I was so nervous that I sweat all over it and had to apologise. Some one broke into his house and took his strat and sg bass but left this one with the case open not knowing what it was and just thought "old crap guitar".
    I would think the Torres guitar would utterly eclipse the gibson LP and even the big F Strat. Over 100 years of making them and still the most prominent guitar design.

    For Les Paul models, especially the newer custom shop reissues, the gold top is THE model. Sure the burst/flame tops are nice but I personally find them overused and static. The double gold finish Gibson is using now is visually striking and imo the most accurate gold color to that of the 50s. The curved top on gold tops are more pronounced and look great.

    And due to thousands of cork-sniffers, Les Paul remains a crappy guitar since 1957. It's the cork-sniffers who won't buy a guitar with a real bridge instead of the horrible tune-o-matic junk that snaps the strings and due to razor-sharp saddles kills the sustain, a guitar without this horrible headstock tilt that forbids doing behind the nut bends and make the headstock easy to break, a guitar with a bolt-on neck that is possible to replace, a guitar with a roller nut that will actually allow the Les Paul to stay in tune for more than one song for the first time in history! Gibson used to make WONDERFUL guitars (with a Les Paul body shape) with all that in the Norlin era, but the cork-sniffers wouldn't buy it. Because it was simply better. No, cork-sniffers want the 1950's! So, Les Pauls must remain wall-hangers with horrible, horrible, horrible solutions reminiscent of the 1950's. Damn you, cork-sniffers!
