      Getting a different species works most of the time. Its because bettas were bred for a long time to be "fighter fish" making most of them aggressive. Different species are much less likely to be aggressive since they were never bred to do so!
      Other than that, a densly planted tank, a tank at least 15 gallons in size, getting a female, plakat, and stalking the tank lightly. This all really helps raise your chances with domesticated bettas

      Only advice I can give that wasn’t covered in the vid is to get a female betta
      Males are naturally territorial and were even bred to be more aggressive while females tend to be a lot more peaceful, though it’s important to remember that every betta is an individual with their own personality and even female bettas have the potential to be aggressive, even if it’s unlikely

      Raising a fry. My Bettas community aquarium was successful, I had my fry alone till an appropriate size of course. His tank mates were 2 kooli loaches, 1 Panda Cory, 5 orange glow light tetra, 3 glass catfish. Planted and hidey holes.

      The bigger and densely planted the tank, the betta (badum tsss). Bettas like space and plants, and the more territory you give them, the less likely they’ll be aggressive with tank mates. Try and avoid shrimp as tank mates, as bettas love to chomp on them for food.
      Females can be kept in “sororities” (multiple female bettas) with very little hassle, so if you want multiple betta that’s the best way to go.

    Both my females did not like their tank mates (or each other) my first addition, Delilah, just tried to eat everything but soon realized that they weren’t food, so now she just inspects everything. My second betta, Blueberry, did NOT like the female betta or any of the other fish, so while she finished her quarantine, I added some shrimp for her to get used to, then I added her to a breeding box in the community tank, yes, she still tried to square up the fish and flared at everyone but after two-three days she calmed down completely and is now the perfect addition to the new tank. In my opinion, you just gotta give them time to realize that “fish are friends, not food”

    • @_AquaArt_
      @_AquaArt_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wait- so you put both females together? Betta fish can’t be together, unless it’s in a female society but even then you gotta have at least 8-10 of females in a densely planted, at least 35+ gal tank so they can make a hierarchy. Putting just two will cause them both to be super stressed. Making these betta societies are super hard and delicate. They mostly only work if they were raised together as siblings. Other than that introducing them together is super difficult.
      But I’m glad everything is good now!

    I had a male betta with some julii corydoras and he was the sweetest! When the cories had the zoomies, he would kind of tag along and zip with them halfway across the tank, wait for them to loop back, and zip with them back to the other side lol. He was so mellow and playful.

    So I find that some people who breed bettas do keep them together in such a way they can actually be with other bettas and even other males. You'd probably have to find a private breeder. I unfortunately have the cup bettas at our local pet store. I always found that the ones who look quite depressed (inattentive even when you touch and pick up the cup) are far more mellow than any actively swimming around in the cup. I normally pick those less active bettas anyway as a way to rehabilitate them. I had a betta I kept for 3 years before he passed that was basically a cat stuck in a fish body. He rather than wait for me to finish sprinkling pellets would attempt to jump out of the tank. He enjoyed chasing my finger along the glass and I even taught him to play around with a ball at the surface of his tank.

    We're lucky in the UK, a lot of fish stores keep male Bettas in larger tanks with other fish, so you generally know they're ok with other fish. Even if they're kept alone they're in bigger spaces than the cups they're in in the US..

    Maybe I got really lucky I put my sons male Halfmoon Betta in our 55 gallon community he’s the centerpiece, the coolest fish in the tank he swims around and checks up on all the other fish. I tap the tank and it comes up to one spot to eat separately through a little ring I put in the floaters so it’s always open he learned pretty cool, watching him act like an African bush fish when he’s stalking the guppy fry very cool! I didn’t do anything special to make him a cool fish just plenty a room and plenty of plants Hope that helps somebody.

    I have a male beta fish named Percy and he was temporarily housed with a minnow and he didn’t touch him but I wanted him to live alone in his 10 gallon so I eventually caught the minnow and got him out and my chickens ate him (he came from a creek so I wasn’t going to risk it in my other tanks either) so now I have a black crowntail named Percy in 10 gallons, a Blue VeilTail named Bellamy in another ten, and A community tank that’s like 25 maybe(?) with snails tetras Mollys guppies and zebra dynamos, they all get along very nicely 😂

    I have a betta with neon tetras, otos, and a few ghost shrimp. They only have issues at feeding time because the neons are faster. Luckily I noticed my betta will follow my hand so I just lead him away from the other to make sure he can eat. The tetras are more aggressive than the betta.
    Still need to figure out how to get both of them to quit grabbing the algae wafers and running with them when I try to supplement the cleanup crew.

    I had a female betta fish named Zuko and cardinal tetras. They lived in a shared aquarium which has silk plants, live plants, caves and large stones for hiding. I made sure to have a test run to observe Zuko's reactions to the tetras and vice versa. I had an extra tank to separate them if ever they don't get along. So after days of observing them together, I saw they're peaceful with each other. They lived like that for how many months. Until one day I found all the tetras floating and their stomach ripped apart. I'm suspicious of Zuko because I can't think of anything that will cause that. 😅

    I used to own a lot of bettas and other kinds of aquatic animals. For me one male, and an odd number of females (3,5,7+). Of course do some research to provide the right tank size… don’t need females fighting for space also for the females, make sure their colors are not brighter than the male. This is if you want only bettas.
    Side note: if possible breeding is a concern just make sure to take out the bubble nest when feeding or cleaning.
    Side, side note: some good fish to have with bettas are Cory Catfish, Kuhli Loaches and Snails. Careful of the Snails, they will breed like crazy.

    Mollies and platys can be with bettas just as well as bottom dwellers or guppies its how you set your tank up and it depends on how many fish you are adding to what size of tank. Bettas don’t do well with fish like tiger barbs or ciclids cause they’re fin nippers. Danios , tetras , mollies , platys any community fish can be good with bettas dont listen to the media hyping up betta aggression i have 2 community tanks all thriving realistically any fast swimming dominant fish you wanna avoid cause bettas are also dominate

    • @sarahenson9659
      @sarahenson9659 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried training your fish to respond to a light or a sound? I tap the front glass for my goldfish and he will also respond to a light. My betta will follow my finger to the food. His tank is heavily planted but I don’t worry about the corydoras too much. I drop sinking food in twice a week and that seems plenty. You know, heavily planted tanks sometimes provide a little food. It’s possible the fish aren’t that hungry. I mean bettas always seem to want to eat but maybe try feeding your fish every other day.

    Oh also! For those who don't know, the tank was already set up with tank mates for a reason. It's easier to introduce a betta to an already established community because territories are already figured out, and the betta will find a territory within established parameters. If you have a tank with a betta first and THEN introduce fish, the betta already sees the tank as his whole territory and it will be a lot more stressful for everyone involved as they try to find a way to re-establish territory. There's a higher chance that your betta will eat the newly introduced fish

    • @garg4531
      @garg4531 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tetras usually turn nippy when they’re stressed or there aren’t enough of them together; keeping a large group keeps any aggression focused on each other
      Neon tetras are otherwise very peaceful but I’d still suggest keeping an eye on them, as even if they don’t nip the betta they may still outcompete them for food
      Guppies are best avoided as their long flowy fins get mistaken for rivals and lead to aggression, and they might even end up nipping at bettas for the same reason
      Imo the best tankmates for bettas would be peaceful bottom dwellers like corydoras and loaches loaches, which keep to themselves at the bottom of the tank and are usually ignored by other fish

    I got my Beta as a baby from a store and it's the most peaceful betta ever she loves hanging out with her guppy friends and has no aggressive behavior she even tolerate the gourami

    My family kept bettas as a grew up, since I was 6 years old (my uncle let me pick one out as a birthday present). Ever since then we always had one, now I technically have my first betta that only I care for since I have my own apartment (but also is technically my 5th betta). He is the calmest betta I’ve ever had… like so calm that he’s NEVER flared or acted aggressive. Literally not even once and I’ve had him since February. I’m considering getting a tank mate for him (he’s in a 6 gallon shallow style tank, with 1 racer nerite snail who he doesn’t even seem to know exists). In this case, there is no top and bottom of tank to separate breeds of fish by, because the tank is only 7 inches tall. I want another tank mate that is suited to a shallow tank like this, but now that I’m hearing they are territorial about the water surface I’m concerned. Any ideas?

    My betta when I initially got him was quite aggressive for a few days, this was an already well matured tank he had been put into with only ottos corydoras and endler guppies. He had no issue with the ottos and I don’t think he even knew the corys were there but the endlers with their brighter colours and darting behaviour I think stressed him out initially. A few days later and they’re all friends the guppies know not to bother him and give him a wide berth and he just goes on his way. It’s been four months now and he’s grown into a pretty cool looking galaxy betta

    I had a betta with some spotted cory and they got along really well. Whenever I cleaned their tank, they would all huddle together in the temporary tank.

      Betta fish still require company: they are just a species that are extremely dominant and have horrid territorial issues. They still need socialisation.
      Finding a calmer and less territorial betta Is good for both betta and accompanied fish.

    My betta is ready to throw fist every time he sees his own reflection in the tank glass. That same betta, just accepts fish after fish as his new subjects. Unfortunately I had an issue with a khuli disappearing during a water change, & my betta preceded to search of off the khuli’s hiding spots looking for him days after. He’s since stopped. He just seems to enjoy watching his tank mates & looking for food in his duckweed. So far he’s had Guppies, Khuli, Cory, Blue & Crystal Shrimp, & Thai Micro Crab tank mates. He gave up on hunting Shrimp after he couldn’t get the biggest one down. He was really trying to eat it whole & alive. He’s super chill for a betta. He’s a halfmoon dumbo.

    Your doing GREAT ! But don't over plant the tank. Bettas need to be distracted to get them tamed. When i was young in the 1970's, i kept male and female Betta's in a community 35g. You need more variety of species. I had Angel's, Swords, cardinals, Platy's, Kribensis, Cory's, Chinese alga eaters. I think it was 4-5 males and 8-9 females. Everyone of them were chosen for for being mild temperament, which can be done when acclimated. Then there are the Psycho's that can never be tamed. They were held in isolation. Your set up is perfect with the cells with clear walls for seeing their temperament and getting them socialized !

    I had a male betta in a 10 gallons community tank with 9 other fishes. He is chilling and even had his food snatched by the other fishes lol. I hà swordtails, mollies, pygmy cories, cory catfish, cherry barb, yellow striped danios and even a tiny snail. The only fish I had bad experience with was the golden killifish.

    As a teen I was really into fish keeping and i had this big beautiful greyish-purple plakat with yellow fins. Loved him to pieces! I cohabbed him in a tank with a small school of Otocinclus in it, and all seemed fine. It was a pretty tall tank where he'd stick to the top, and the otos stuck to the bottom. I never saw any conflict between them. That is, until I woke up one morning and he'd murdered every single one of them. Needless to say, he didn't get to cohab with anything other than snails after that.
    He eventually developed dropsy and, despite all my efforts to help him, he sadly passed away 💔 RIP lil buddy, you were a little murderous but I still loved your spirit.

    Bettas in community tanks are a huge risk, it can be done but in certain conditions. If your tank is a heavily planted BIG tank (not a tank under 30-40+ gallons) with shy bottom feeder fish or animals that hide in the plants are good. You MUST be ready to redo me the betta if things go wrong, bettas are more solitary fish and prefer being alone but they can be done in a community tank

      @@nuggetsimp i’ve had neon tetras since i was like 6 or 7 years old and i still have some but they’re kinda like the family fish and i finally got my own fish tank and it currently has a betta (his name is bowie) and a mystery snail! (his name is jon davis) my betta is really curious about the snail so this is a really good sign that he is okay with tank mates!

    I got a steal on a betta at pet smart. It’s a perfect red and white dragon scale that has one of the best personality’s I’ve seen on a betta. He only gets annoyed with his tank mates if they go after his food but other than that he is completely chill. I never really see him flare. I know petsmart isn’t the best but the cup was clean and he looked healthy

    I like the challenge of an aggressive betta, makes it all the more satisfying when you finally find a species it can tolerate, recently my blue dream shrimp I added to my 10 gallon male betta tank were at first being harassed, but I gave it a bit more time and no deaths so far, he now usually looks at them and just ignores them, I think he realized they’re not a threat and they’re too fast anyways, I was about to remove them but I saw him chilling out around them.

    Similar things with angelfish, they are very aggressive and the only tankmates they should have should be quick so they can easily get away.

    ive only been gettin females because i prefer the short fins and nobody sells the wild ones that werent selectively bred siamese fighters… always have been very peaceful, even with a guppy, but ive always carefully picked fish that have very muted colors, the only colorful thing in there woth my current bb is the chilli rasboras, the tank is also pretty large. I hate fishbowls.
    its very colorful and shes pretty popular in my family which definitely helps hold my sanity together when my mom wanted to grab baby discuses and put them in ten gallon tanks when i first started the hobby

    I found that having established thanks with other fish in it and then introducing a betta fish within the store cup. You just take the whole cup and sink it so they can see the other fish let's them be like oh OK well this is their space they were here 1st. I'm just going to be living here too. And haven't had any issues. Infact in my 30 gallon tank i had three male bettas and they all had their territory and they left each other alone they only reason i don't have them and the other tank mates anymore is because somehow bacteria or a parasite got in the tank and killed everything. No clue what happened it was a well established tank everything was in there for about a year and a half then one morning one by one they all got sick and i spent the following month trying to treat them and then they all died. I don't have that tank set up anymore. I still got the tank around like in the shed, but i just don't want that size setup anymore. My little 10 gallon with a betta and a couple of guppies is perfect.
