"The heroes are clearly having fun, making the encounter tensionless." Holy shit, someone put it into words. I've been struggling to figure out why I couldn't get invested in the Ace Ops vs. RWBY beyond simply 'it felt too easy', but you nailed it on the head.
I wouldn't say either Ruby or Weiss were "having fun" and just because Blake and Yang both smiled at each other doesn't mean they were treating the situation like a game or making light of it.
@@spencermalley10 I mean, I clearly disagree; otherwise I wouldn't of said that in the video. Believe it or not, more went into my assertion that the girls are having fun during that encounter than just simply Blake and Yang smiling at each other for 1 second.
@@twiinsiink Like what? Because all you show is Blake and Yang smiling at each other before they rush Elm and Vine and that's more indicative of them realizing they have an advantage over them not that their "having fun".
Can we talk about how ruby hasn’t used her scythe how she used to like in v1-3? Or how blake doesn’t fight with duel wielding, her whip string gun blade thing, or her general old fighting style? The only one whose been consistent is yang and Weiss, but even Weiss is slipping since the choreographers forgot she’s also super agile and (while not weak at long range) better at short / mid range.
For real though! Ruby doesn't use recoil anymore and instead twirls Crescent Rose around like she's in flag twirling. Weiss has completely forgotten how to fence and now exclusively summons. And Blake and Yang's only go-to move is "they both hold onto Blake's ribbon and one of them throws the other around".
Twiins iink FR! It feels like Cresent Rose is a baby more than a weapon now since Ruby can’t do a basic freaking combo 💀 And as for Blake and Yang I totally agree it’s getting a lil stale lmao. I swear I wouldn’t mind if they just used some assets from Monty’s Dead Fantasy 😭 you should do an analysis on it! Probably only episode 1-3 tho since it’s like 6 episodes long lmao
@@twiinsiink id love to hear your opinion on Montys fights in red vs blue I really enjoy them and think they surpass rwby in some regards such as setting and how it's used
I stopped regularly watching RWBY three or four episodes into Volume 3* and haven't seen a single episode since Volume 4, but from what I've heard it seems like the fight choreography has trended simpler and simpler after Monty...left the team. *Ironically for this discussion, because of the fights. Not so much because of the **_quality,_** but because of the **_quantity_** and **_context._** So much gorram time was being wasted on fights that **_don't matter_** against characters we have **_no reason_** to **_care_** about. *Why?* Even more ironically, this feeling that fighting was overtaking the things I liked about Volume 1 (which were greatly reduced even in Volume 2, so Monty gets some of the blame) was _why_ I stopped watching RWBY. If I'd watched the trailers first I'd have gotten a more accurate idea of what the show's interests and focuses would be, but...
One thing that annoyed me was the fact that Winter rarely used glyphs instead of using summons, even though she should have many abilities yet used none of them against Cinder.
Sonic Badass 2000 Seriously. Pyrrha gave out much more in her fight w Cinder, so I was expecting Winter to do better. It was cool she started fighting without her aura and chopped off Cinder’s grim arm, although it would’ve been better if the fight was more close rather than a total stomp. Hell, it would be symbolic if Winter cut off Cinder’s human arm instead; like some Ironwood parallels.
THAWING CHICKEN It wouldn’t make sense for them to do any better against Cinder because Cinder eclipses them in power. She was still new to the maiden powers when she fought Phyrra and Phyrra was a prodigy herself. Penny and Winter are good but they aren’t amazing and a maiden would be able to defeat them easily. As for Winter cutting off Cinders human arm that would make no sense from a writing perspective. From a writing perspective only Juane and Ruby should do any permanent harm to Cinder because they have personal reasons as to why they hate her.
jake trinex Phyrra is a prodigy sure, but Winter is much older and a full fledged huntsman enlisted into the military, she should at least a bit better than the main kids; maybe even a bit below qrow or at the same level as the ace ops. As for personal reasons, cinder literally impaled Weiss. Although, seems like the writers forgot too since Weiss didn’t even tell Winter lol
I just miss Ruby's "she's physically weak so she uses rifle recoil to boost her swing dmg" and "hi-speed combat style despite wielding a heavy-looking weapon" concept. Now she's like "lemme fly to some high ground and pew-pew these nubs". Her hyperspeed semblance just can't be felt at all. Same with Ren, just pew-pewing and shit, zero melee combat.
I understand Ren but Ruby lugging Crescent Rose around as often as she does would develop some muscle to wield it the way she does now (plus this is the same girl who could drag a giant Nevermore up the side of a cliff). But I see where your coming from and her added strength might be a detriment rather an improvement.
@@juicebox7372 The glyphs to stick to the side of the cliff and her own semblance to run fast enough to drag the Nevermore up there, but she still has to have enough strength to drag it up there otherwise her speed would be useless if she can’t get it move in the 1st place.
The Fights that I have the most to say about would be: Watts vs Ironwood: I find it simple but refreshing. No Semblances, no fancy Weapons...just two Men with Guns that try to kill each other in a really cool and creative Setting. I always wondered what a Duel between two Gunslinger would look like, and this Fight gave me the Answer. Bonus Points for the really awesome Song. Qrow & Tyrian vs Clover: It can be fun when the Hero and the Villain have to team up to defeat an even bigger Threat, but this was simply not the way to do it! The Fight looks good, but I can't enjoy it because of how unnatural it is. The Writers passed both Clover and Qrow the Idiot Ball, just so this Fight could happen and so Clover could be killed. Not to mention that they are fighting in the Tundra AT NIGHT! If their Auras break, then they are BOTH going to freeze to death and Robyn will die too! Not that I care about Robyn, but still. Penny&Winter vs Cinder: Penny's Part in the Fight was okay, but I expected MUCH more out of Winter. She is supposed to be a grown up and more powerful Weiss, but the only Power she ever uses is her Summoning. I know it's a Problem that Team Rwby's W has, but I didn't know Winter was suffering from that as well. No Glyphs, no Time-Dilation, not even Dust! I almost get the Feeling the Writers deliberately nerfed Winter because they felt bad for Cinder!
So glad you said this. I 100% agree, especially about Winter and the Ace Ops. There's so much more they could've done with them, and would've helped emphasize that RWBY should NOT be equivalent in skill to people with YEARS of experience on them. I really hoped Winter/AceOps would be better guides/role models
Side note, also bothered by how easy Winter was being with Weiss during "training". We saw her throw a lot more at her in the Weiss v4 character short, before she could even summon. While on first watch miniKnight was cute and clever, it would've felt more earned if done while Weiss was attacked by multiple of Winters summons like in the short.
When was the last time Ruby and Yang actually had a conversation as sisters? What gets on my nerves even more about the show is that when Ruby is talking about Summer to anyone, Yang never seems to be around. Summer may not have been her birth mother, but she raised her so technically she is her actual mother. And Yang has the audacity to still call Raven “mom”. At the end of the volume when Salem mentions Summer, Yang doesn’t give a shit. Oh and also the Blake and Yang thing is getting in my nerves too. It’s like their not two characters their more like a ship now. A ship that makes zero fucking sense. This volume was so freaking bonkers. Imma shut up now. Here have your like 👍🏽!
A huge problem for me with yang is that she never seemed like ruby's sister. Even in the early volumes the only time she acted like rubys sister is the first 3 episodes. After that the sister dynamic is just never there
The writers wrote Yang and Blake to be super dependent on each other to feed bumblebee fans and it's honestly so annoying. Bumblebee is a cute ship but it gets annoying when it's constantly shoved into your face and the characters aren't even characters anymore, they're a pairing.
Yang and Blake have essentially become the new Ren and Nora, which is ironic, because Vol. 7 was the exact volume Ren and Nora started acting independently of each other and getting their own separate development arcs. Nora is a Mantle sympathizer and Ren is clearly a supporter of the military. Seeing couples disagree with each other is amazing to see and even more amazing that they managed to pull it off convincingly. Ren and Nora are just the best. In fact, all of JNPR is just the best, even Jaune. Sure, he can come across as a little Mary Sue at times, but I think that complaint only exists because he's supposed to be a side-character, yet gets more development than Ruby, the actual main character. (And also because he's voiced by one the writers and creative heads behind RWBY) If he was the main, all the focus and development he goes through would have been pretty standard for an MC of an anime. He's even the first one with a love interest subplot, which is also pretty MC-esque.
I found it really annoying that the only teamwork ever displayed was by Yang and Blake. It's not a bad thing, per se, but it's sad to know that it's due to pandering, since Ruby and Weiss don't get the same treatment Great video like always BTW!
I know right! Especially since Harriet has her line (in like, episode 4 I think) where she makes it clear the Ace Ops are coworkers- not friends. RWBY using teamwork could be a perfect excuse for them to win against the "strongest Hunstmen and Huntresses in Atlas".
Remember the last time Weiss and Ruby teamed up, where Weiss enhanced Ruby's bullets to freeze enemies as she sniped to slow down Torchwick's Mech? I want that stuff to come back. Literally any more combinations would be nice. Yang and Ruby, Yang and Weiss, Blake and Ruby, Blake and Weiss. That'd be some good shit. You would think a show about teamwork would, I dunno, show teamwork?
@@twiinsiink Eh, that excuse would still ring hollow. I get it, power of friendship and all, and leaving out how despite Harriet's words the Aceops are clearly friends, them 'just being co-workers' still doesn't change that they're an elite squad that would have worked together for years. Them being unable to work together would make no sense.
Supereyepatchwolf has a great video called "What Makes A Fight Scene Interesting". Give it a watch. It explains something RWBY has been lacking from it's fights.
If a fight can be summarized as "they hate each other, so they fight lol", then you're doing something wrong. Without any setup or stakes a fight feels hollow. Gon vs Hisoka from HunterXHunter is so good because their fight has been hyped up ever since the initial arc, and simpley had good choreography overall.
@@danielzakgaim2764 I wouldn't say they hate each other. In fact, I kinda hate Watts talking about his history with Ironwood. It's more along the lines of Ironwood outsmarting and finding the guy who's put his country through hell and getting to wail on him.
Honestly, all JNR need a 1v1 by this point but with how they focus on RBWY, not even well half the time, no one else get's fights like this. Even though they're all basically protagonists by this point. Ironwood's fight was amazing and I feel like Jaune and Neo tussling in the hallway could have been a good bit of seeing him extend his Aura. Like, say, slicing the floor to bring up an Aura wall to stop her from getting away. Maybe an actual forcefield like he originally said so long ago to both block and track her inside. Then he'd have far more versatility in the way he outstrips the others: AURA.
Completely agree with this and the post above. JNR need 1v1 fights. *Especially* Ren. My boi Ren has gotten no respect the entire show. I say give him a rematch with Neo. Have him drop his shitty guns and just fight hand to hand from now on.
@@heyarnold7256 Thank you for mentioning how useless Ren's weapons and fighting style are. The first and last badass thing he did was using hand to hand combat against the grimm in the Initiation, I expected to see others along him using Aura infused combat but I guess that was an outlier. At the very least he should get a better weapon cause his puny knives and weak bullets isn't cutting it.
While the choreo was much better in this volume, there are even more fights that don't really need to happen, and the more you look at them, the more you notice some "work arounds" and stuff that downright makes no sense, stuff that was added for comedic sake or just to look cool. It really makes it feel like nothing matters.
I don't mind fights that don't need to happen as long as they're still fun. The Food Fight and Pyrrha fighting team CRDL are both pretty unnecessary but still exciting and entertaining.
@@twiinsiink I mind them, but more in the sense that I think if these fights are meaningless, why not save the resources so you can boost the later fights or use the time to expand upon important elements that have been left to suffocate from the plot bloat?
@Terrance Kling Isn't it since Neo is a) obviously better than JNR by a league and a half (do you really think JNR would have lasted vs Cinder as well as Neo did?) and b) they used no tactics to fight her during the whole time....
@@Slayer398 "b) they used no tactics to fight her during the whole time...." Jaune was always portraid as someone who sucks at fighting, but is a really good strategist and shotcaller. Ok that there's an emergency, but he the fact that he doesn't even think for a moment, analyzing Neo's moves and trying to use the information that he knows about her is really really bad writing, ignoring his whole characterization just so the plot could keep going. " a) obviously better than JNR by a league and a half (do you really think JNR would have lasted vs Cinder as well as Neo did?)" ??? They were also trained by pro huntsmen and also passed through stuff that normal huntsmen don't even think of, they should be just as good as Team RWBY in some capacities, yet they where completely fooled by Neo, and she didn't even use any remarkable strategy. The best movement that Ren could think of was shooting his blades and trying a kick? Really? The same character that exploded a grimms head in volume 1 with his bare hands tried this now? This is only one example, the writers passed them the idiot ball just so the plot could happen as they wanted. (Sorry if I sounded rude in any moment btw)
Volume 7’s fights have a problem. The fight “effects” to show impact obscure your view when going frame by frame. I noticed it in the 2v1 in episode 12. It doesn’t work and it only ruins the fight. It doesn’t even show impact. It just obscures the amazing choreography.
The fight cramping wouldn't of been a problem if the show got more episodes instead of flashy explosion effects or when Yang activates her semblance and instead narrow down the pace of the volume to get to know the Ace Ops, establish Penny's return, more Schnee time, etc.
RWBY Volume 2 was undeniably the Gold Standard of RWBY fighting choreography. Ever since Volume 3 ended, RWBY was just an empty shell of It's former self. I can only hope that Bunta Kinami will save RWBY by making the Shonen Jump Manga reboot of the series as RWBY's new future.
Volume 7 was... a letdown. It could have been amazing but it was so unfocused that I was frustrated through most of it. I didn’t care about the Ace Ops and I HATED Robyn, and so many of the fights this Volume involve them. How am I supposed to enjoy a fight when I don’t care about the characters? I found the fights this Volume to be lacklustre, except for the Watts vs Ironwood fight and Cinder vs Penny and Winter. The Qrow, Clover and Tyrian fight has some of the most interesting choreography in the show, but it’s impossible to enjoy because the circumstances that led to this fight were so stupid and contrived. As a quick aside, I actually used the system you used to rank all the Volumes fights. For me, Volume 7s score was lower than yours for Volume 4. Ouch.
Real talk, I'm so glad i'm not the only person who hated Robyn. But yeah, the circumstances for all these fights to happen are pretty wack, especially Qrow and Tyrian teaming up.
Twiins iink Yeah, Robyn was awful. I wished she had been replaced with May Marigold, and the Happy Huntresses angle dropped. That way we get a character with some clout, but still an outcast, within the aristocracy of Atlas. Henry Marigold from V4 introduces his last name to Weiss like it’s well known. That way, when we get introduced to May we get a character with some social standing among the elites of atlas, someone to demonstrate how bad the elites are by simply having them react to her actions or the fact that she is transgender (maybe some rich snob dropping her previous name would help show how shitty they are), and she could be more subtle in her approach to getting what she wants, unlike Robyn. It would help the election plotline a lot by having this character with some ties to the elite, rather than some nobody.
I like Robyn and I feel like she can be a really cool character but they literally wrote her to be really weak and annoying when I feel like they were trying to write her as strong and doing what's best for people. Also the fights were meh. I don't like the Ace Ops (Marrow is an exception) so I don't care about their fights. I love Winter but all of her fights were a let down. She's constantly shown lecturing Weiss on her ability when the show makes it seem like Weiss is stronger anyway.
@@twiinsiink was the reason because Qrow learned that ironwood put a bounty on RWBY's head? I checked out when I watched it cause I got bored (that should give some idea to how the quality of the show has dropped despite the graphical quality jumping).
Drunkle qrow had the best choreographed fights in Volume 7. Despite the last fight he had being so freaking stupid. And the fight was relatively short. That Yang and Blake teamwork was such a eye roller and didnt do much for me.
I remember someone pointed out that the only time the ace ops ever worked together well was when clover was there. Which he wasnt against team rwby and as a result there teamwork was messed bad as you can see with elm getting triggered and marrow and harriet arguing.
Yeah, the story creates convenient reasons for their victory to be reasonable, but that doesn't make the writing any less worse. Saying, "look at Elm and Harriet's problematic personalities" is the height of plot convenience we didn't know they had those personalities before the fight occurred. The idea that Clover is necessary for them to fight well together is also kind of silly for me considering all the times previously in the volume when the Ace-Ops split off away from Clover to work on other stuff.
@@CommentsDeleteSometimes What does Harriet nearly getting stomped by herself have to do with the Ace Ops not being able to fight well together without Clover? The scene you're referencing doesn't show Harriet failing to fight well with a teammate, it just shows Harriet running into a problem by herself. It's not an argument against what you're trying to propose. You actually need to reference a moment of Ace Ops showing bad teamwork with each other when Clover isn't around.
@@alekseiangell4886 Because thats more proof to show there not all that by themselves than to say there is. I showed proof why there not all tgat. Wheres your proof tgat they are? No. Okay then. So where are yall getting this from? Nowhere. Meanwhole theres literal onscreen showing of them NOT being good without there leader. My argument was never that they had bad teamwork. My argument was tgat there only good when clovers tgere and clover wasnt there vs rwby
Kinda makes sense why I thought this season was sort of... "meh." I lost interest... if not on Chapter 9, then it was just before that. Right before the flurry of actually good fights (as it seems).
Same here. I stopped watching the series on the 9th episode way back when it was airing and I JUST started finishing the series today due to this video.
@Twiins iink You know, I'm glad you actually talk about the fights without trying to simply accept the "emotional stakes" or the "hype" nowadays and pass it off as good, unlike most TH-camrs nowadays. RWBY's main selling point was the fights, and it got the core of its prime audience hooked during the trailers.
I felt like Volume 7 was the best RWBY's been in a while, but damn; I was not expecting that score. The best grade since Volume 3 and the second highest score and number of fights only beaten by Volume 2. The show may have taken a dip in Volume 5, but it has shown a fairly steady improvement after Volume 3. With all the flak RWBY has received, I wasn't going in to Volume 7 as excited as I did for previous volumes and was even several days late to watching its first episode because I just forgot. That excitement came back in no time at all after I started watching the first episode.
It's ok. I saw someone else use the cake analogy on reddit when talking about what was wrong with the fights. www.reddit.com/r/RWBY/comments/eopqxp/rwby_3_things_i_think_the_story_needs_to_work_on/ The point he made was different though.
The Ironwood vs technocuck was an outstanding fight for me, since usually I don't see much in action or flailing, It doesn't make me ever think about what's happening, but that one, that one was like strategical or something, it was outstanding!
If you like big brain strategy instead of mindless punching, I recommend the anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. You might or might not be casually familiar with it because of all the memes, but the core premise of the series is that all the fights are literally just a series of deception-based outsmarting battles, where a character can only win if they use their heads. It gets pretty out there pretty quick. For example, there's one fight in the series where two characters' souls get trapped in a photograph with a murderous ghost and if the ghost kills the image of the characters in the photograph, the characters in real life die, plus, they can't do something simple like destroying the photograph because that would also destroy them. It looks pretty hopeless, until one of the characters figures out that they can just take a picture of the picture the ghost is in, but this time zoomed in to only have the ghost in frame, effectively trapping the ghost in another photograph.
Weird fight and Non fight as the JNR vs Neo fight was, I really enjoyed it conceptually. This show rarely has fight with a win con other than "hit the other person until they go down". I liked the fact that it was less a brawl and more a game of keep away and this added a different tension to things. I just wish that first half, where everything is slow mo and Jaune just strolls up like he was just waiting to the side the whole time, wasn't so bizarrely animated. I want to see more fights in this show where there are stakes, but they aren't life or death.
On the cake thing I think fondant would’ve been better. Looks great tastes awful. Anyways I found myself let down by all but Qrow and Itonwood fights. I could go into detail but mainly the sound design kills me. In older volumes even when an attack missed you could feel it. It just feels like they’re slapping wet noodles now with hits being weak or muffled. Even in fight scenes it doesn’t feel like a fight because I can’t feel the fight
May I suggest some slight differences to your rating system, because I can see why it sounds confusing. a) You're way over-explaining it. Just say 'Each fight is rated between 0 and 2, 0 being terrible, 1 being good, and 2 being fantastic. I'll rate all the fights in the volume and create an average at the end' People understand what an average is, you don't need to put in the percentage at the end - suddenly you were talking about fractions, and then you're talking about percentages, it's confusing. Just rate all the fights and present the volume with the average score, between 1 and 2. b) Use decimals, not fractions. It's much easier to understand the difference between 0.25 and 1.25 than it is to understand the difference between one quarter and one and one quarter - there's too many 'ones' being thrown around in speech. Additionally, it helps you as the rater. Currently, you're forced to put two different fights into, for example, the '1 and 1/4' category - but what if one is marginally better than the other? You could rate fight A as 1.25 and fight B as 1.30. Allows for much more precision. These analyses are really good and it's nice to have a catalogue of the different fights in RWBY, which are so incredibly important to the show. Keep it up and tell us about volume 8 when it arrives!
There is no 0 in my scoring system. And honestly, all you're suggesting is that I word it differently. The percentage simply acts as an overall look at a volumes' fights. Seeing the amount of fights and total points is nice, but I think there's value in seeing an average "grade" as well. Decimals and fractions: you're splitting hairs. They do the same thing. Your example of precision is pedantic, as there's no need to pinpoint such overly specific values to the fights. The way I have it set up now allows for you to quickly see if a fights has done poorly, well, or excellent without getting lost in 100 decimal points.
Twiins iink of course there’s no 0, cause that would mean a lack of a fight. But all scales still need a base of zero, that’s just kind of how maths works. And I get it sounds pedantic, but I only point it out cause you yourself said people found it confusing. Wording can make all the difference, especially when it comes to understanding stuff. I’m sorry for causing offence.
@@twiinsiink Also... you do kind of have a 0 rating? The near-fights. They fit the literary definition of a fight - two sides attacking each other - but they don't have enough action to place them even at a 1/4 on the scale. i.e. they're a zero.
May I ask if you've seen Revolutionary Girl Utena? The reason I ask is because the fights in Utena are structured and animated almost entirely the same (especially with reusing cels) but the reason the audience gets invested isn't because of the fight itself, but because of the characterization that leads to the fight happening in the first place and the idea of how it will resolve. The conflict of ideology between characters with narrative stakes is so much more valuable than fight choreography quality. I used to think flashy fights with acrobatics and fancy moves was what made a fight "good", but now I just see it like a flashy toy being dangled in my face. The more I see, the less interesting it gets, especially when you have tons of shows now trying to out-particle effect each other with the same kind of bogged down basic move combinations. It's why one of my favorite animated fights is the Asuka VS Eva Series fight in the End of Evangelion movie. Not only does the narrative context and symbolism give you a reason to be invested in what's happening, it's also not full of stupid flashy particle effect gimmicks or speed so fast it can't be followed. You can feel the weight of each blow and movement... and it was made over 20 years ago!
You hit the nail on the head my friend. Thats exactly why I like One Piece fights so much. People put too much stock in choreography and not the actual storytelling of the fight. Even the early parts of any shounen battle series easily had far more gripping fights than anything RWBY has done lately.
I haven't seen Utena (though, I'd like to) and I also haven't seen Evangelion so your Asuka vs Eva reference is also a bit lost on me. Regardless, I agree that excessive acrobatics and particles can be fun, but aren't what make for a good fight! RT seems to be finding their way back to that tasty choreography that we had back in volumes 1 and 2, so I'm excited to see what volume 8 will have in store for us.
@@twiinsiink Thank you for responding! If there's anything I want to see with "improved choreography" in RWBY, it's that we see more teamwork between the characters. I mean actual teamwork like what Yang and Blake have been doing but apply that to all of the characters. You would think in a show that places so much emphasis on teamwork that they'd work together and maybe make a theme out of it or something, but they don't. I want to see some Ruby/Yang, Weiss/Blake, Ruby/Blake, and Yang/Weiss combos instead of Ruby, Weiss, and Blake/Yang fights. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - You can watch all 39 episodes of Utena on TH-cam for free by NozomiEntertainment with English subs (don't bother with the dub, it's awful) and with Evangelion I'd resort to pirating as the Netflix adaptation messes up many important lines of dialogue with both subs and dubs (sub is better here too). Both shows have lines that are meant to be double or triple entendres, and the dubs screw those up. The Asuka/Eva Series fight really can't be spoiled but I recommend watching the series and then the movie, the payoff is worth it. :3
This was easily the best season since season three. Everything just felt like it was genuinely moving and like interesting things were happening that had good planning and payoff without being horribly predictable. It also felt like it had the dark elements of the show without being too melodramatic (I'm looking at you Qrow subplot). There were definitely some bad fights but overall I loved this season.
It was definitely a big step in the right direction, although I personally disagree about payoff for some parts. The election subplot and Penny being framed were dropped about as soon as they came up, and Robyn Hill in general was uninteresting and unlikable to me. But I'm glad so many people are enjoying it and that it is improving.
4:27 Its definitely a decision that makes more sense on paper. Clover is trying to arrest Qrow and if they stay in this battle royal Qrow has an extremely low chance of winning not just because of the numbers disadvantage because of his and clovers semblances. I think people get on Qrow decision because of hindsight since Qrow choosing to team up with Tyrian is the reason Clovers dead. Lets say Tyrian didn't kill Clover and he just escapes before backup arrived to arrest Qrow. While the hole is still there its less distracting due to a lack of consequences.
in terms of characters fighting together and/or always being around, I half-expect Yang and Blake to merge like Ruby and Sapphire into Bumblebee permanently.
Ranking them would be pretty tough, as I feel like too many elements of design can come down to subjective opinions. But, I'll probably still make a video discussing their new outfits eventually!
@@twiinsiink Thanks. I'm a sucker when it comes to character designs. Gotta say I'm impressed with Blake's,they actually managed to make her look older than her mom.😉
@@fyrflyr2378 I love character design too! Can we talk about the fact that aside from Ruby no one in the team really wears their color now? That had me disappointed...
My biggest problem with the Volume is the Ace Ops fight and how inconsistent RWBY is with the strength of its characters. In Volume 4/5 we were shown that there is this MASSIVE gap in power between RWBY+RNJR and actual Huntsmen and their opponents like Qrow and Tyrian. Yet in the few months between the events of those Volumes and the Volume 7 climax, we are supposed to believe that these students with only A SINGLE YEAR of formal training are supposed to be able to beat up on the strongest Hunters in all of Atlas? Ruby is the only one that actually seems to struggle with her opponent, and I bet its supposed to funnel into the fact that one of her 'weaknesses' is that she is good at fighting Grimm, but not people. Yet the fight still seemed too easy considering that Ruby hasn't actually won a fight against another human/faunus opponent that wasn't some grunt without help. Weiss basically mopped the floor with Marrow and Yang practically 1v2'd Vine and Elm while Blake did a bit of jumping around and getting captured. Lets say that most of the Ace Ops are close in power with each other while Clover is the strongest. Clover was able to hold his own 1v2 against Qrow and Tyrian while all of Team RNJR was getting manhandled by Tyrian alone a few volumes ago. I understand that the Ace Ops personally trained RWBY and RNJR for a few weeks/months during Volume 7, but this still doesn't justified a bunch of barely qualified huntresses beating an elite squad of Hunters that are the best in AN ENTIRE KINGDOM. The whole thing just feels so completely asinine and undeserved.
Way I reason with it; they didnt win in pure fighting power or strength. If you look at the fight and thier fight against the grim Ace ops get carried by thier semblances way more than team rwby does with the exception of weiss. Each rwby member countered the ace ops semblances with the fight with weiss being a prime example of when yang busts the floor. They just countered thier fighting styles, if they continued to just mindlessly throw themselves at the ace ops they would've lost, but they didn't do that.
I actually quite like the lack of fancy choreography when Watts and Ironwood throw hands. It really sells focusing on trying to kill eachother, technique be damned. ‘Why spin and kick, when I can break a motherfucker’s nose with my fist?’
Hey Twiins, I got a sorta theory that might explain why most of the important stuff happened in the last few episode of V7 (In this video case, why most/half of the fight happened in the last few episode). The sorta theory is that the V7 that we are seeing now is actually a part of the original V7 plot where the other part of the original V7 plot is spread to V8 and V9. The reason for this sorta theory is because of RT announcement for V8 and V9 is greenlit before V7 air (the announcement was like in October and V7 air like in early November). The announcement remind me of the news that I hear like how the first few episode of She Ra season 2 is originally suppose to be in season 1 and the info that the PPG reboot season 2 is already in production before the news that season 2 is greenlit is announce. The V8 and V9 announcement making me worry that the writer might stretch the plot that they originally have for V7 into a 3 volume plot to safe time in production. I mean, Maria is originally suppose to be in V5 along with Adam being gone in V5 before they have time management issue and move it to V6 like what they mention in V5 commentary. So it kinda possible that RT still have time management problem but this sorta theory need V8 to be out. Wonder if you think this is plausible or not?
I believe that, makes sense why the election arc felt so unnecessary or Weiss getting pushed aside of a location that reflects most of her character. Plus season/sequel greenlit has always been a thing in production, doesn't matter if the series did that good or not but due to contracts and deals they can start production on the next project even before the first one airs. Makes for great articles that talk about "Renew for a new season after three days of airing." Also I do not believe that Maria wasn't a creation for V5's lack of silver eye talk, and even if she was planned for V5....she easily forgotten in the Volume after her introduction. What the hell does she do, have sex with Pietro to pay off her eyes. Greatest huntress my ass.
@@fandude666 On the Brightside, we have the walking dead ship which is Maria x Pietro. The true endgame of Rwby beside beating Salem's whale in a pokemon battle. On the different note, I agree with you here about Maria and silver eye. I feel that Maria have a different intention for V5 but they make her have silver eye in V6 because it is a response to lack of silver eye info in V5 and less. You know, I wonder if the writer plan the plot for more than 1 volume? I mean, it seem like they only plan the plot for 1 volume. V5 commentary did show the possibility that the writer did cut some part and move it to V6, so it might be possible that they only plan for 1 volume. Do they have a idea on how the end the series? Usually, I follow the story writing advice of make the beginning and the ending first then make the middle part since that always be like my guideline to prevent me from off rail in the story.
@@quddushashim6638 It does feel each Volume can almost be seen as it's own story that so happens to be part of a continuing narrative. Based on their recent "Atlas fall" cliff hanger, it feels like they want to rush the story as fast as possible. I honestly don't think they have a real ending yet, mostly due to the fact that they can twist a truth as much as possible. They say they have plans up to 12 volumes, that could mean anything like small foot notes or where the characters go, all of that means nothing if the execution turns out differently. Keep this in mind, anything can change during production. As long as the final product isn't release yet, any detail can from writing to animation can be altered. While making a pre planned beginning and end can help keep focus on a story, maybe keep the end as a vague concept incase changes happen. But do know when it's proper to end, or else you end up like other series where they had a chance to end it but kept going due to popularity and "There is no happy ending, life keeps going." So I feel like it should be known when to end it. Maria, I hate you but my god you and Pietro make one hell of a ship.
@@fandude666 The "There is no happy ending, life keep going" phrase sound like it become a excuse to milk a series, just like subversion the audience's expectation by giving them a bad/cheap ending because the writer have feck up the story and can't really fix it unless they pretend it on purpose.
@@quddushashim6638 Kind of one of the reasons I got tired of Steven Universe after the Diamond conflict and movie(funny enough, I'm actually drawing Spinel doing a parody of the iconic Green Lantern Emerald Twilight cover: Issue 2). I haven't even watch Future yet because I feel like it should just end and leave on a high note before things get even more overcooked. I've heard that production is over and should be wrapping up the series soon, so better late than never I guess.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! We share the same opinion on most things but I wanna add my thoughts on the RWBY vs Ace Ops fight! I was always given crap because I don't like it. They're supposed to be Atlas' elite but they got beaten effortlessly (aside from Blake, their auras didn't even break and weren't even out of breath) by a bunch of teenagers? Bullshit. And don't give that 'they trained with them' crap, a month isn't NEARLY enough to justify this. And the Ace Ops were really stupid for the sake of plot here. Team RWBY won because of teamwork? Um, the Petra Gigas fight? If the Ace Ops weren't using teamwork then what the hell was that? And even then the only teamwork we saw from team RWBY was Yang&Blake (who apparently can't live 5ft apart from each other now). I really miss the Atlas Paladin fight… There's too much stupid shit to this fight for me to enjoy it. The choreography was okay I guess but it's just everything else that ruins it for me.
Apparently, even Blake's supposed aura break was just her aura being weak despite the stomping she received while all the Ace Ops(especially Marrow and Harriet who got hit once or twice but got knocked out cold and loss their aura) got few hits but somehow lost and the worst part is that Team RWBY just carried and tied their bodies right after the fight and went to the next objective as if that was a grimm fight.
@@jefferynwosu7223 It didnt do the breaking animation and i knew as soon as the episode came out that peoppe would say it broke but it didnt. All it did was flicker
I posted this before but another youtuber pointed out how tge ace ops NEVER workes well together except ONCE when there *leader* was present. And he wasnt present against team rwby vs ace ops. Instead of working well, they did the opposite. They were getting triggered easily (elm and harriet) and marrow and harriet got into an argument mid fight.
Some things I disliked the fights is such as Oscar not getting completely pumbaled by neo like yang did in like Volume two or how the ace ops completely failled against rwby it made it hard to believe they where meant to be Atlas best since the didn't act professionally atal and rwby should really still be students and around that level
I was under the impression he got offscreend....hence the battle damage and clear exhasution. And then he got back up. Which i dont see why he couldnt have gotten back up. If hes not dead then it makes sense. At leats to me.
I will happily disagree about the camera work. I was able to follow the battles pretty well on my end but I can see how others would get lost as well. But I agree with a lot of people Volume 7 is a big improvement over volume 5 and with new writers and people heading the project I think some fresh blood will definitely help this show a long.
I agree but honestly I haven't liked anything since V4 to V5 but V6 kinda put it all in our face that they have grown up by making everything way to easy for them...but I'm not saying V6 fights aren't good it's just. It's mostly store line and seems like they only made the fight to keep it an action anime...but that's just my opinion
I agree this volume has great "not fights". Most of the fight has some sort of character growth or importance to plot. However, fights are start to look the same, the only Character doesnt seem to have that problem is Weiss however it could because she doesnt fight much 1vs1 fights or against another human or maybe she has so many skills by pressing another button or doing a combo it looks different no matter what. I wish we had more different team ups or challenging fights that characters had to take down by doing two tasks. Imagine having Blake (the "ninja") and Ruby (the "Sniper) had to sabotage a "Boss level" enemy. Imagine having Weiss and Jaun doing a support role and help the other teammates being protected and avoid damage. Imagine Nora and Yang go all out against the enemy or using the powerhouse status to overpower the enemy. Some many RPGs can do great job with character styles of battling with 1 move and lot of more with Team work. It´s said that RWBY doesnt do that anymore.
@@twiinsiink It's kinda ironic that they have like 10 heroic main character and somehow they are frenquently pair with the same character and they never explain why. If Blake and Tang are always together then come with a strategy or a reason why.
People don't like fights that are fast like the moves are quick, I personally love fights like that, Volumes 5-6-8 are my favorite because of the Fast moves and attacking strads. Volume 7's fights aren't really my favorites, I don't like them and I don't hate them but they were pretty good I guess.
Wow, I'm really easily pleased. I loved all of these fights. A lot. I love all of the fights in RWBY the same. They all look amazing to me. I am a massive pushover. It's nice to see another view on them, even if I don't agree.
Personally if Rwby played with more team attacks against the ace ops (freezer burn, ladybug, ice flower) I would’ve liked the fight a lot more, and it would’ve been an easier way to tell the audience that Rwby won because they consider each other friends and used better team work. 🤷♂️ But still, it’s not a horrible fight
CRWBY need torrian to animate the fights because for someone who can make interesting and amazing fights especially Death Battle , he can make the fights amazing and enjoyable but that doesn't mean i dislike the animators efforts because this volume 2 of my favourite fights in the whole show
Hey, your fight discussions are really cool and thought out! Have you ever considered doing something similar for a different series? I don’t really have any thoughts as to what kind, I just like this content :D
Thank you! Uh, I've thought about making videos on other shows before, but I hadn't considered doing a "let's talk about fights" for anything outside of RWBY.
They literally came out of the ace ops fight untouched, If I was in that fight, I’d be dead, but because of their aura, RWBY would probably come out severely injured. The Ace Ops are high ranking huntsmen and huntresses compared to them. Who just got taken out of their first year at Beacon.
I'd rank the whole fight against the AceOps at 1/4, but I have to admit that I have a really heavy bias against Team RWBY. It's strange to say that, but they kinda are winning too much? In Vol 5~7 the only "fight" that they "lost", if I'm not mistaken, was against the Apathy, and that wasn't a fight per se, and more like an encounter.
Ferret Queen they really haven’t been in a hand to hand fight since then though. Volume 4 the tried to fight Tyrian lost but fought a grim. Volume 5 the fought at the battle of haven and Weiss got destroyed, ruby got knocked out, yang couldn’t keep up with emerald and mercury. Even though jaune was fighting cinder lol cinder was just toying with him. Ren and Nora couldnt lay a hand on hazel. Volume 6 yang and Blake vs Adam. Adam did destroy them if you really think about it and due to yangs mentoring from her she won because of strategy. Like the rest of the fights if you collect from all of the season they won through strategy.
@@slauter1939 I speaking just about Team RWBY in this, so I'm not considering Team RNJRs fights in volume 4. But yeah, Weiss got destroyed in the fight against Cinder team, but it wans't "natural". She constantly tried to just summon, instead of doing literally anything else. In volume 2 Weiss lost her fight in the train because she was overwhelmed by her opponent strenght and because she was still a huntress in training. In volume 5 she lost her fight against Vernal because it was her time to receive the idiot ball. Yeah, Cinder toyed with Jaune...because hand to hand combat is not his point, he's a strategist and lost his mind. Ruby got knocked out, but it was a surprise attack while she was using her eyes. Nora and Ren struggled with Hazel, but once he used the Lightning Dust, Nora just destroyed him. And, at least in my perspective, in the end they won because Cinder was defeated by Raven, not because of their own strenght in a lot of ways.
Ferret Queen Ferret Queen see volume 5 weiss lost because not only wasn’t vernal trained by raven and extremely experienced that was weiss first 1v1 fight since the fall of beacon. Plus the mentality of it was claimed that Vernal was the spring maiden to just learn about the maidens and to immediately go fight that is gonna mess with you mentally. Plus weiss knew she was not going to hold up against someone that was trained by Raven so of course she resorted to try and do her strongest move and try to summon. She haven’t had over a year of combat of course your gonna be rusty. Just because Nora hit Hazel once doesn’t mean he got destroyed he got hit due to Nora getting supercharged. He charged into Nora not knowing what her semblance is after he found out he added fire dust and they still got destroyed they couldn’t keep up with him. I’m not sure if this is what your trying to say or not but imma add it for other It’s not you who think this a lot of other people do just because someone like Nora was able to hit Hazel out of a room they complain about power scaling. Some people semblance over powers another wether your experienced or not, in terms of ability yes some may be stronger in that category but not in power.
Ferret Queen Also I feel raven is naturally stronger than cinder but due to the maiden power cinder is able to over power everyone, until she fought raven
@@slauter1939 I understand what you're saying here about Weiss, and it makes some sense...but even so they never demonstrated this clearly in the show. Besides, Weiss isn't that much of a stubborn person, maybe she was in volume 1, but in 5 she grew up. At this point in the series none of the members of Team RWBY are, even Yang is capable of creating complex strategoes from time to time and thinking clearly, so insisting in using a move that isn't being effective do not suit her that much, again, in my perspective. To be honest (and sorry if I sound rude) this sounds really apologetic of the writers mistakes.
As hard as it is to admit we will never get the satisfying Monty fights again, there is hardly any substance to the new fights. There doesn't even seem to be an attempt to emulate Monty's famous quirks and instead they're playing it safe while doing the bare minimum "sprinkles" to make you think it's a cool dynamic fight
A couple of people think your point about RWBY having fun means enjoyment and tension are mutually exclusive in a fight scene, but the root of the problem is that there was no setup for there to be tension in the first place. Both RWBY and The Ace Ops are only fighting because the plot demands that the main charcters are at the center of attention. We never see a point in the plot where the Ace Ops are actually superior(noticeably) to RWBY, and all we can go off of is hearsay from the characters. The fight itself doesn't have the main characters struggle, so there's no tension there either. For a fight to have tension it has to be setup within or before said fight. By never establishing the Ace Ops as vastly superior nor having RWBY struggle, the viewer has nk reason to believe that RWBY might lose besides some characters saying"these guys are cool".
Now i begin to think that Ace ops (Without Clover) and RWBY should've fight before, but when they are training. Obviously the Ace-ops will beat RWBY because the former are stronger and well-trained. This can get the team to train harder to be at the same level as them. And then maybe a few months timeskip or almost a year, when the betrayal scene happens. RWBY might have a better chance to win. Though still have to remove the "Then you trained us." line from Ruby, it just doesn't suit for me.
All the cake analogies, is this the lead-up to a Twiins iink and Cake Station meetup? Also, on a side note, I don't know if I'd constitute RWBY vs Ace Ops (Continued) as a separate fight.
lol, that'd be pretty cool, but I don't think they even know who we are. It's fair of you to consider RWBY vs Ace Ops one long fight (as it is all one encounter). I considered it two different fights because they were interrupted by another fight and also some dialog. Two different fights from two different scenes. I'll let you know that if I had considered it one big fight, I'd give it a score of 1. As the first little part with mostly talking offers so little it wouldn't really make much of an impact on the overall fight.
The fights of RWBY. My problem with fights in RWBY as of late is that they seem to go back to this feeling of i have to learn how to fight again every single volume. Its like they get so focused on showing new abilities that they forget what the characters have learned as a whole. Ren and Nora for example always go in head first and lose before they can figure out that teamwork is an option, and it happens all the time. Why do they have to lose the same battle again and again to use tactics they learned in season 1. In that giant battle with the bird and scorpion Grimm they all used teamwork effortlessly. But now they have to think about fighting how they were taught to before the actual fight? It makes the fights lag imo. Too much talking also plagues the more recent fights in the sense that when they talk they pause action. They have shown before once again that they are capable of talking and fighting at the same time by calling shots as well as subtle banter, but now they full on stop to have whole conversations mid fight. This slows things to a crawl and often interrupts the conflict. One on one fights mid battle is another issue. It can work but they should be included as moments in the grand scheme of things, simply adding flavor to the fight. Right now a small one on one fight does nothing but take up time that could have been put into the team fight. RWBY needs a pinch of salt rather than a gallon of it when it comes to these small interactions within a larger battle. Otherwise the One on one fights and dialogue are fine. Now back to growth. Making them continuously grow allows for villains to be stronger than them. That keeps the growth feeling like growth and not like "My friends are my power" at the beginning of every volume. If the characters are all strong it creates a fight that is who is the better fighter and not who has more power. Those 2 points combined add for a fight where the characters have to be at their best to win, when in actuality they should always be at their best because they are literally fighting for their lives 70% of the time. There is no reason or room for regression in a time where their lives hold the weight of the world. Of course there comes a point where you have to ask when is it too much, but that's just it. You don't have to have a huge power scaling moment in every volume, so Ruby doesn't have to take a steroid every volume to feel like she is growing. There are many things at play when it comes to growth. Its okay to Coast on growth in battle for a volume or two so long as the characters don't fall off while growing in other ways. Even then you can have a character fall off and have to pick themselves up again (Example being Yang). But the characters shouldn't learn how to fight over and over every season for absolutely no reason other than abstract growth. It makes every character fell stupid, dim and dull. A great example of this feeling of dim thinking on the characters part is the fight at the end between Clover, Qrow, and Terian. Qrow teams up with the person who is the enemy of both himself and Clover. Regardless of Clover's knowledge on Salem, Qrow knows the bigger picture. So his decision to work with Terian comes off as idiocy. He knows that a tactic of Salem is to divide humanity and make them fight her battles for her, and he knows that Terian works for her so why would he fight with the greater enemy that poses more of a threat? No matter what "score they have to settle" its still a bad move by Qrow and one that doesn't make any sense due to his knowledge. If Qrow teamed up with Clover to fight Terian, Clover could have still died due to Terian and it would have allowed for a more emotional build up at the end as well as being a more logical option. When Qrow screamed "I'll kill you" after watching Clover die because he himself didn't think, it felt very confusing. He could have either avoided the death or made Clover's death mean that much more not only to himself but the viewers as well We are at the point where the characters have had several reality checks and have had to rethink what they believe is correct. This want to fix a problem with no solution would no doubt be stressful to them, and their character development proves this making them seem like their growing wiser. the fights need to carry that same weight. That weight being: "We are not fighting for just us anymore. we cant just sit around with the world at stake while its on our shoulders. if we are to pick up the mantle and fight for the sake of the entire world we must do so with our all and nothing less" Of course these are kids though. So they are gonna have fun moments to distract from the greater fight at large, but in battle they have to feel like they are moving forward or at least being steady. As for the adults they need to do a better job at being what they are. Huntsman who have seen and dealt with more than the kids have. im not saying they have to be perfect but they have to think more and act not on impulse but out of knowledge of the gravity of the situation Ozpin is the only one who acts with the other people of Remnant in mind. Every decision he made was because of his experiences so why would the other adults act reckless with theirs.
Fix. WEISS. SCHNEE!! EVER. SINCE. She started summoning that is all she does!!! She doesnt ricochet or use time dialation or block blows with more blows she is boring in a fight. Im glad she can summon really but she is basically the red mage she should be good at both!
I feel like the ace ops losing to rwby might not have been so bad if per say, the excuse was that the ace ops didn't really want to fight them and went easy. Or one of them refused to fight or one or two of them wasn't there. Or maybe they had already fought another battle beforehand and they were weakened. Anything would have been better.
1:30: Does anyone else get really irritated when people try to figure out what qualifies as "subjective" or "objective"? I appreciate that Twiins is explicitly saying her opinions aren't actually objective, but...don't try to be objective. Every criticism or compliment worth saying is _subjective._ Just make sure your subjective judgements are supported by the text* and don't rely on unimportant details. Also, how are characters and songs just superfluous aspects to a fight? If a character's...character doesn't have _some_ effect on every part of a fight-from why they're fighting to how they're fighting to when the fight ends-it's not a good fight. Meanwhile, the soundtrack of a fight is important for establishing the mood. If you mean you're not considering how good those things are _outside_ the context of the fight and instead focus on how well they're used _in_ the fight, that makes sense and is just an oversimplified point. But it doesn't really sound that way. (Which is my point.) *In the abstract sense which includes audio, video, etc.
Characters and songs are superfluous in relation to "subjectivity". Fore example, I really like the song "Neon" that plays during the FNKI fight back in volume 3, but I didn't let that effect the score because not everyone would like the song. However, in this video I mention the song that plays during Ironwood and Watt's fight as a positive in that it made in impact on the timing of the action- it wasn't just my opinion on the song that had it effect my score but rather how it was used. Another example is the fact that I hate Robyn A LOT, she's my least favorite character in the show, but I don't let my disdain for her alter how I score her fights (they don't get arbitrarily lowered because I think Robyn's character is shittily written). Really, what you say with "make sure your subjective judgements are supported by the text* and don't rely on unimportant details." IS what I try to do for these videos, I just feel it important to let the viewer know that this isn't so much an "opinion" piece, as I really do want to try and be as objective as possible for these fight videos so I can plug in the data I collect into my little charts.
@@twiinsiink I guess I just disagree with how you describe your methodology. "Objective" reviews are a pet peeve of mine, especially the ones who think that objectivity means ignoring all context or subtext.
I agree with everything but “Maybe Volume 8 can pull its fight scene back up to where it was in poser”. While I agree with that, please keep in mind that Monty animated a lot of the fight scenes in Volume 1-3, as well as the fight scene between Yang and Adam in V6 (it was suppose to replace Yang losing her arm). No matter the soft wear, the fights most likely won’t have that power behind it. I’m not saying it’s impossible without Monty, however from seeing the last 4 years it’s unlikely at this point of time.
I just want Yang to go back to using her old Ember Celica, since they were more effective weapons than the downgraded form that she received in Atlas, along with making proper use of her semblance(i.e. not pausing to activate it right in front of the opponent).
At first it was about the fights, the characters and the story. Now it's all about the ships they don't care how horrible the story writing is as long as it has ship teasing for their shipping fuel they're happy.
What ships do they care about?....renora? Okay thats one. And they hinted at yang x blake....so two....wheres *all* these ships that people are lying that they care about?
@@gravenwolf6535 i alreasy mentioned that. So thats 1 confirmed and one *hinted* at. Where are *all these other ships* they care so much about...nowhere. exactly. Its just you people making up BS lies.
@@CommentsDeleteSometimes I'm talking mostly about the Bumblebee moments they've been throwing at during v7 it only gives them more reason to keep them watching the show. What if RT does a Qrow/Clover instead of Clover they hook Blake with Sun. Do you think those shippers will continue to watch the show or drop it. Many of the fans I've seen commenting they only care about the BB ship and less about the story or other characters that isn't Blake or Yang.
I'd give the Ace ops vs. RWBY fights combined about a 1/2 point, mostly for the animation. I even made a whole video it. th-cam.com/video/iQWB2EPrpAo/w-d-xo.html
I've never really cared for Ironwood vs Watts. It's boring to me because they just...shoot at each other. The use of Amity is cool but doesn't help that much. Maybe it's because the bullets look weak or that they have no other effect like explosive, poison, ice or something. I never rewatch it.
I’d like to point out that the CRWBY animation team still hasn’t figured out how to use emphasis in fights. So many awkward pauses and fights jerking to a halt detract from the experience. Points that should have emphasis are too smooth, leading to fights lacking... weight. Overall, its extremely distracting.
I'm gonna be that guy, but I don't think their fights will ever be as good as they were back in Poser; being that they lack that Monty flair. That, and wasn't Poser a more simpler program to use compared to Maya, which made it a easier to animate fights; I could be wrong.
Poser is "simpler" as in there's less options available. It's a hyperbolic analogy, but think of it like Poser being MS Paint, and Maya being Paint Tool Sai. Also, Maya is the professional standard, basically all of the animators hired to work on the show are familiar with Maya and know how to use it, not so with Poser.
Anyone else just want Ren’s guns to actually do something for once? What’s even the point of having, let alone firing, them if they *never* do any damage?
While I'm not trying to defend the ridiculous ease with which Team RWBY mopped the floor with the Ace Ops, it does make a bit of sense why the Ace Ops would lose that match-up against RWBY. The Ace Ops were missing a crucial member of their team, their leader. Now, it's been established already that the Ace Ops aren't friends and they don't exactly know each other that well outside of their capacity as co-workers. The only time we've seen them work as a full team before was during the Gigas fight down in the mines, and that was when Clover was with them. Clover was calling all the shots and they generally work better as a team when they're recieving direct field commands. They don't try pulling off individual partner combos, more group combos with all five of them. Plus, the fact that Clover's Semblance is broken and is constantly boosting the entire team's luck when he's leading them also contributes to their success. Overall, the Ace Ops have A-tier leadership and group teamwork while really weak individual teamwork. Their biggest mistake was splitting up to face each RWBY girl more or less 1 on 1. Meanwhile, for RWBY, one of the worst aspects of their team actually turned out to be useful in this situation. RWBY has terrible leadership and close to no group-wide cohesion or teamwork like the Ace Ops do. They haven't pulled off a single Quad-combo attack involving all four of them since Volume 2. While they are weak as a group, they are incredibly strong as individuals or in Blake and Yang's case, duos. Since the girls all more or less have a good understanding of each other, which stem from their friendship, they don't need the instructions of a team leader to work well together with their chosen partner. Their teamwork really falls apart if all four girls try working together, but the pairs are extremely strong. You know, Team RWBY isn't Team RWBY, it's more like Team RW BY. And usually that aspect of their team would get hard countered by the Ace Ops, who are really good at working as a group, but they make the dumb decision of all going their separate directions in the fight. So it's less stupid if you think about it. Their friendship alone wasn't what won them the fight, it was a mix of the incompetence of the Ace Ops without their team leader and linchpin, Clover, and the fact that Team RWBY managed to split them up so they can fight 1 v 1, which obviously gave them the tactical advantage as they themselves work better separate than together.
The fight in episode 12, with team RWBY vs the Ace Ops, extremely irritated me. It was regarded at the beginning of this volume that the Ace Ops were the "elite of elite huntsman", and yet they ended up getting their asses handed to them by a bunch of teens with their "power of friendship" gibberish. It would be like a series centered around a high school junior varsity team winning a fist fight against US navy seals JUST because the show is about them. If this series should insist that team RWBY overcomes the Ace Ops, then that's fine, but they should have shown team RWBY having to had put in extreme struggle and effort to emerge victorious against these "elite of elite huntsman". Seeing Ruby and her team all bruised, bloodied, with broken bones after winning against the Ace Ops would have been far more accurate for the scenario. Instead they were given the Mary Sue treatment and emerged victorious without a scratch on them. Plot armor has been working too damn well for the 4 main characters, which results in terrible story structure. I blame shitty script writing.
if they just struggled a lot and actually work together as TEAM RWBY, then i think it would've been better but overall your opinion idk for me i just loved it loll
"The heroes are clearly having fun, making the encounter tensionless."
Holy shit, someone put it into words. I've been struggling to figure out why I couldn't get invested in the Ace Ops vs. RWBY beyond simply 'it felt too easy', but you nailed it on the head.
Glad I could help :)
I wouldn't say either Ruby or Weiss were "having fun" and just because Blake and Yang both smiled at each other doesn't mean they were treating the situation like a game or making light of it.
It's something you get a lot in recent comic books with young heroes, they never take anything seriously and never seem to be in real danger.
*Why?*
Even more ironically, this feeling that fighting was overtaking the things I liked about Volume 1 (which were greatly reduced even in Volume 2, so Monty gets some of the blame) was _why_ I stopped watching RWBY.
@@jakejax8032 You fail to understand, its not about Winter winning its about her not using her abliites to their fullest potential.
@@SonicBadass Exactly! She has Time Dialation, Shields, Platforms and probably three Million other Types of Glyphs, so why is she only using Summons?!

The Fights that I have the most to say about would be:
Watts vs Ironwood: I find it simple but refreshing.
Winter can’t use dust because her weapon doesn’t have dust in them since they’re just swords.
@@justapotato1176 She still has about three million different Glyphs that she could use for Combat.
If Qrow is as good as Tyrian then Winter should be able to stand her ground against Cinder
I really enjoyed watching 'Nora' using Neo's fighting style.
Blake and Yang need to stop being attached at the hip and maybe the fights will be a bit more creative and Ruby and Yang will seem like sisters.
After that the sister dynamic is just never there
@@cakeday4058 In V2 Yang referred to Summer as "super-mom". Kind of weird that she's forgotten all about her now.
It's not a bad thing, per se, but it's sad to know that it's due to pandering, since Ruby and Weiss don't get the same treatment
Great video like always BTW!

That's true. Though, I will say that they're not as bad as they were in volume 6, so that's nice.
The fight cramping wouldn't of been a problem if the show got more episodes instead of flashy explosion effects or when Yang activates her semblance and instead narrow down the pace of the volume to get to know the Ace Ops, establish Penny's return, more Schnee time, etc.
The problem with the volume is that they didn't skip episodes 2-5 entirely.
I really don't like the abundance of 2D effects, especially when Yang uses her semblance. I miss the glow effect it had in the first volumes.

Thank you for pointing that out, I didn’t really notice it
Yeah, the story creates convenient reasons for their victory to be reasonable, but that doesn't make the writing any less worse.
@@alekseiangell4886 But they never did that good. Lol harriet almost got stomped by a mammoth grim when she was by herself. Prime example right there.

Interesting, I actually really like the taste of fondant.

You can watch all 39 episodes of Utena on TH-cam for free by NozomiEntertainment with English subs (don't bother with the dub, it's awful) and with Evangelion I'd resort to pirating as the Netflix adaptation messes up many important lines of dialogue with both subs and dubs (sub is better here too). Both shows have lines that are meant to be double or triple entendres, and the dubs screw those up.
The Asuka/Eva Series fight really can't be spoiled but I recommend watching the series and then the movie, the payoff is worth it. :3
I hadn't considered that about Utena, but you're absolutely right
@@thefloofartist1908 Yes! Teamwork! I've been crying about that since like, volume 3
I agree 100%
Maybe then they'd actually get to talk to their other friends for once.
I would also love to see you rank the character designs.
Ranking them would be pretty tough, as I feel like too many elements of design can come down to subjective opinions. But, I'll probably still make a video discussing their new outfits eventually!
@@twiinsiink
Thanks.
It's kinda sad that the most positive statement that can be given is, "Maybe next time they'll finally be as good as they were before!"
Love the undertale in the bg :) And awesomely entertaining vids!
Remember when yangs punches actually looked like they hurt
“Neo bullying RNJR” 😂
Watts vs Ironwood was THE BEST FIGHT SINCE THEY SWITCHED TO MAYA. Fits with Ironwood being the best character in the show.
I really like your work :D ! This really interessant the way you are analysis RWBY
I actually quite like the lack of fancy choreography when Watts and Ironwood throw hands. It really sells focusing on trying to kill eachother, technique be damned. ‘Why spin and kick, when I can break a motherfucker’s nose with my fist?’
Nobody:
Me:oh shit Blake is attacking from the darkness where we can’t see her so cool😃
Makes for great articles that talk about "Renew for a new season after three days of airing."
Also I do not believe that Maria wasn't a creation for V5's lack of silver eye talk, and even if she was planned for V5....she easily forgotten in the Volume after her introduction.
I really miss the Atlas Paladin fight…
There's too much stupid shit to this fight for me to enjoy it.
I agree so much about the teamwork!
@@jefferynwosu7223 Wow, how many more things are wrong with this fight? I swear RWBY's power scaling is SO bad
Twiins, please, do a video discussion about the weapons. Design, functionality, names, references, changes and different uses.
I'm not really well versed in weaponry. I don't think I'd be particularly qualified to dissect them for a video
Twiins iink Sad, but fair enough.
Some things I disliked the fights is such as Oscar not getting completely pumbaled by neo like yang did in like Volume two or how the ace ops completely failled against rwby it made it hard to believe they where meant to be Atlas best since the didn't act professionally atal and rwby should really still be students and around that level
I've stopped watching but it's seems to me like bad power scaling has always been an issue
Ivan Back From The Card Shop Indeed. Sadly, the issues don’t stop there.
@@yugen8195 yeah. Its actually overshadowed. Impressive since mad power scalers normally have a loud voice on the internet
So this entire video explains why every encounter in black lagoon is entertainment. Why did this *just* end up in my recommended?
Yes all the way! Fights are getting kinda repetitive with the limited ways characters are allowed to work together.
Honestly, Qrow's choreography and weapon abilities are almost always peak!
Too bad they turned him into an idiot in episode 12
RNJR+Oscar Vs Neo was basically Neo humiliating the main cast for 2 mins
Wow, I'm really easily pleased. I loved all of these fights. A lot. I love all of the fights in RWBY the same. They all look amazing to me. I am a massive pushover. It's nice to see another view on them, even if I don't agree.
Personally if Rwby played with more team attacks against the ace ops (freezer burn, ladybug, ice flower) I would’ve liked the fight a lot more, and it would’ve been an easier way to tell the audience that Rwby won because they consider each other friends and used better team work. 🤷♂️
But still, it’s not a horrible fight
Ironwood vs Watts is probably my favorite fight in the series
CRWBY need torrian to animate the fights because for someone who can make interesting and amazing fights especially Death Battle , he can make the fights amazing and enjoyable but that doesn't mean i dislike the animators efforts because this volume 2 of my favourite fights in the whole show
I love your videos and everything you stand for
That's so nice, thank you!
@@twiinsiink Well, I'd be happy to see you cover other shows in any capacity then :)
Well said!
@@twiinsiink Re-did the math (for if you had done that), it'd be about 78.8 percent-ish, yeah?

Why couldn't marrow use his semblance before the Ace ops vs Rwby fight even began? His semblance is really useful when he is in a group.
Marrow didn't really seem like he wanted to fight, seems Ruby running out of the room real quick caught him off guard.
the best part of rwby right now is old episodes and the the ost
I love volume 1, 2 fights more than volume 7,8
The ace ops and RWBY fight is like a 1 1/2 for me, it's way better than a 1/4 ahhhh
Maybe keep watching the video before you comment so you can see that there's a second RWBY vs Ace Ops fights that gets a higher score?
Yeah, I apologise lol
He could have either avoided the death or made Clover's death mean that much more not only to himself but the viewers as well
We are at the point where the characters have had several reality checks and have had to rethink what they believe is correct. This want to fix a problem with no solution would no doubt be stressful to them, and their character development proves this making them seem like their growing wiser. the fights need to carry that same weight.
That weight being:
"We are not fighting for just us anymore. we cant just sit around with the world at stake while its on our shoulders. if we are to pick up the mantle and fight for the sake of the entire world we must do so with our all and nothing less"
Of course these are kids though. So they are gonna have fun moments to distract from the greater fight at large, but in battle they have to feel like they are moving forward or at least being steady.
As for the adults they need to do a better job at being what they are. Huntsman who have seen and dealt with more than the kids have. im not saying they have to be perfect but they have to think more and act not on impulse but out of knowledge of the gravity of the situation
Ozpin is the only one who acts with the other people of Remnant in mind.
Yeah. They kind of imply through dialogue that the Ace ops (aside from Harriet) are holding back, but I don't really think it's enough.
Weiss forgot about time dilation
(Which is my point.)
*In the abstract sense which includes audio, video, etc.
You need to remember that Monty was not the only person on earth who can choreograph/animate a good fight.
I just want Yang to go back to using her old Ember Celica, since they were more effective weapons than the downgraded form that she received in Atlas, along with making proper use of her semblance(i.e. not pausing to activate it right in front of the opponent).
You should analyze some of the fights from Red vs Blue, another rooster teeth work.
Finally. I've been waiting for this
"Neo bullying RNJR" LOL
At first it was about the fights, the characters and the story. Now it's all about the ships they don't care how horrible the story writing is as long as it has ship teasing for their shipping fuel they're happy.
I disagree, I think the writing's gotten much better in volume 7.
What ships do they care about?....renora? Okay thats one. And they hinted at yang x blake....so two....wheres *all* these ships that people are lying that they care about?
@@CommentsDeleteSometimes Bumblebee.
Am i the only one who actually loved Qrow, Tyrian, and Robyn vs Tyrian and RWBY vs Ace ops?
I mean, I gave both fights a 1. They're not bad encounters.
People say team rwby vs the ace ops but i call that the battle of the thicc
Can u talk about your thoughts on their new clothing designs?🥺
I will eventually, but honestly I'm still figuring out how I feel about them.
Pretty much. But I do think this volume deserved a few more points.
The only fight i bothered watching was James vs Watts, and even then i only did that because Caleb Hyles did the song for it.
Please god let them fix Weiss soon. I miss her.
