Granny putting down Americans at every opportunity and then turning to their American relative to rescue them. Of course, I wished it would work, but i did make me giggle.
It was the exact reason we fought the Revolution. The British disdained "colonials" but expected Americans (and all their other colonies) to send them money.
Truly a great actress. I especially loved her playing scenes opposite Shirley McClaine because they are each iconic representatives of British and American performers.
Mary denounced her mother as American and touted herself as English over the notion that Mary would one day be countess and the countess lives in Downton Abbey. Cora's acceptance that they might have to downsize was "American" of her. Mrs. Levinson was simply giving a dose of reality. It's not as if there weren't plenty of poor people back in NY in need. Saving Downton would be helping a LOT fewer people. Most of whom would be the snobbish English aristocrats living an extravagant lifestyle in a mansion they cannot afford anymore.
@@MavisKen - Well, looked at objectively, these estates were businesses that simply paid excessive salaries, dividends, and other benefits to their owners. Mrs. Levinson was being asked to fund an unprofitable business in order to preserve the "executive's" compensation packages. Indeed, it was the aristocracy's refusal to accept that their estates *were* businesses, and thus they were no better nor different than "trade", was what delayed so many of them from making the changes they needed to make in their finances. The feudal model of living on rents and revenues from agriculture could no longer sustain the costly demands of their lavish lifestyles. Because being involved in "trade" was frowned upon in their social class, they didn't learn the skills of modern business and investment as early as they ought to have.
The British trying to manipulate the in law. Marys alwaays been insufferable about her being British and now wants an American to save their butts again. Just desserts, just desserts.
I agree, but it was mostly the script. They made her look way more uncouth than she could have possibly been given her position and wealth for that time. There's no way this woman raised Cora. And Shirley played it a bit too over the top. Should have been more subtle.
Im rewatching this whole series right now. Mary is outrageously insufferable. Mrs Leavison, her American grandmother, saved this stuffy dinner with her resourcefulness and added a bit of fun to the event too. All the guest weren't shocked like prudish Mary & Lord Grantham & the Dowager Grantham, they had fun and expressed that openly. Mrs Leavison stands as a juxtaposition to their pretentiousness- she wealthy & wise and chooses to enjoy life. In this scene she gave solid advice but neither Crowley was listening. Later in the episode she offers classic grandmotherly affection to Edith and confronts Robert about how he's interfering with and hurting Edith. I think she seems like a cartoon to them in their ridgid viewpoint and lifestyle but she is the one enjoying life as a wealthy woman with the wisdom and ability to shift with the changing times. Shirley McClain pulled this off really well. Though I agree with many its hard to imagine Cora was raised by her. Cora seems such a simp and daft half the time purring and meowing at Robert and others.
@@MavisKen I think their taxes were very high though, as well as their standard of living. They really had to keep up with their Peers, even if their peers couldn't keep up themselves.
Shirley Maclaine...terrible casting. Not believable as a woman of means. The Brits were just trying to make Americans look backwards and crass by casting her.
@@loriar1027don’t agree. Shirley is so affected and stilted here; she’s neither the genuinely brash American nor the nouveau riche American. She doesn’t suit this role, IMO. Other roles are better for her.
@ ok i see your point you think its a casting mistake youre not just hating on maclaine. and i could picture some other actor in the role for sure. theres a bit too much caricature with her in this role

Nobody has a duty to keep you living in luxury. Mary needs to learn this lesson.
How did you?
That’s right
RIP Dame Maggie

According to me , if you really want luxury, you must have luxury capital, and it is impossible to let others help you with your luxury😢

Not only did she fit the role she was the old tanks rival and equal. Maybe that's what you don't like.
Game, set & match.....Mrs. Levinson‼️
@@judyde you could reprise the roll and show us all how she should have done it. No? Then be quiet
