  • This video is Part 1 in a series of videos capturing the build process of a Mahogany bodied, "S-Type" guitar. In this first video, I show how to capture that Dog Hair/Silver Fox look with a finishing technique called Ceruse.
Please join me in my development as a guitar builder. You get to see my progress in real time and I show you exactly how I do all of the work on these projects.
This guitar is currently for sale in my Bellezza Guitars Reverb Shop:

When I saw this vid in my feed I had some doubts. Kit building after all. Can’t blame me for expecting another substandard beginner vid. But you took your time, researched and planned, ran tests. you went about it in an intelligent way, and the result was great. That’s how good work is done!
Love the finish! I’ve done a few ceruse finishes myself. One of my favs.
    Few tips if I may:
Removing the excess Timbermate works well when you use a damp rag. You will pull a little from the pores when doing this. Not enough to make a dif. The cosmetic effect will still be the same, and sealer and laquer allow you to get it flat later. A damp rag easily removes any haze and gives a great contrast from black and white. Nice and clean.
Brotha, get Mohawk ez vinyl sealer. It’s great stuff. Much better than the shellac for the job. I like that you used proper seagraves laquer. It’s what I use. Also, if you’re not opposed to spraying nitro, you could mix your own black nitro(or whatever color) laquer and use that to paint the body. More control that way.
Last tip: get super assilex sand paper for finish sanding. It will change your life.
Hope these tips help you in future builds!

Thank you so much for the comments and tips. I am going to check out the sandpaper for sure. I also should run some tests on the Mohawk sealer. I have found Shellac undercoats are a good way of purposefully cracking nitro top coats, so I use that to force the aging process (if I want to). Since this build I have invested in a FUJI HVLP sprayer, so I had some fun with that. I appreciate you watching.

Nice. If I may make a suggestion: use a high quality pigmented stain. Don't use a dye or the cheap big-box hardware store stains. Go to a woodcraft or a professional paint store. The cheaper ones tend to lift off easily and don't give you the coverage and depth. Good luck with your build!

My friends think I'm nuts. I'm the same way. Not all can do this. You are a woodworker.

Hi man, I really like your channel, your videos are great. I have a question for you, if I take a guitar with open pore finish, example prs s2 satin finish, do I can use it like stage 1 for cerute finish?. What do you think about the idea?

Did you thin the timbermate with water to a tootpaste consistency or? Excellent video thank you. I will be following your instructions verbatim on a mahogany tele. Youa re my new hero :)
