When looking at the family tree itself, the Stuart dynasty in England was quite short, despite lasting over 100 years (though the Tudors were even more impressive, spanning 118 years in History with merely 3 generations)
I mean to be fair most British dynasties coming after haven’t reigned for that long. The House of Hanover made it about 187, the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha made it about 122 (I’m counting the House of Windsor) and the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg hasn’t even made it a year yet (that’s the family that Charles III is paternally descended from)
@@Edmonton-of2ecwe need a simpler name for Charles III dynasty, that one is so long and wordy
@@jaimelannister1797 I mean the royal family is still called the House of Windsor, it’s a just no longer a branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
@@Edmonton-of2eccharles III is considered a member of his mother’s dynasty, and Windsor is still the same house as Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In reality, the U.K. has had the same royal dynasty since 1901 when Edward VII took the throne. Still not as long as the Hanovers, but 122 years and 5 generations isn’t bad
@@emilybarclay8831 No, he isn’t. Cause that’s not European dynasties work. Proven by the fact that Elizabeth had to specifically declare her progeny would bear the name Windsor, not it just happening automatically. Charles is effectively the head of a second House of Windsor, descended in the agnatic like from the House of Glücksburg, not the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
Fun fact! The KJV Bible was NOT the first to be translated in English. Before this was the Geneva Bible (and the Matthew Bible before that). James HATED these first translations, as they insulted rich people. So for the KJV, he told the publishers to deliberately change the insulting passages about rich people and kings. The KJV was massively unpopular with the people, and although James tried to ban the Geneva Bible, publishers continued to publish them in secret.
correct me if i am wrong but i believe she said one of the first
But the KJV then became the most popular Bible translation in the American colonies, which is why it is still among the most popular English Bible translations in the world. A small group of Protestant Christians even claim that it is the "best" or a "divinely-inspired" translations despite the fact that our knowledge of the Bible has greatly improved over time.

she said ONE of the first, not the first
Fun fact, the first Bible in English to be approved for use in English Churches was the 'Great Bible', commissioned by Henry Vlll and written/translated by Myles Coverdale in 1535. A copy was put in every English Church.
Queen Anne will always be such a fascinating figure from history. So much focus on the negative that made her look bad which showed very clear misogyny and sexism on how women are viewed by society and history and always overlooked her actual queen qualities. She was a fantastic strategic military leader and fought off many foreign invasions during her reign, she was economically smart and she was the one that finally united the UK. She was a very good queen but sadly history paints her as fat, ugly, lesbian, belittled by the men around her and a person with multiple awful illnesses. Justice for Queen Anne. Let's change her narrative please.
Agreed! I plan to do a full Queens of the world video on her in the near future.
@@LindsayHoliday that will be brilliant. I watched a factual history programme about her not too long ago by one of my fave historians Dr Lucy Worsley and it really shone new light onto Queen Anne and told her story from different perspectives. The focus with Queen Anne is almost always on her female favourites and her being Britain's first quote on quote "lesbian queen" and also on her being fat, old and too sickly and ill to rule and being dominated and walked all over by the men in government but while those are some parts of her story it's not her whole story and she was actually a very good queen. And don't get me wrong I am fundamentally anti monarchist in every way but I just hate seeing like one specific narrative being told about a woman from history especially if that one story that is always the one told paints her in a negative light. Like she was a whole person. Tell her whole story. Don't just focus on the scandals and the flaws. Shine alight on her highlights. She fought off several foreign invasions because she was actually an incredibly strategic military leader, she was intellectually smart as well and economically smart and handled the financial situation of the country brilliantly and she was the one who finally united Scotland and England together to make Great Britain showing that she was very diplomatic and astute.
@@lucypreece7581you want people to look at monarchs with only good light just because of their gender?
@@SafavidAfsharid3197nobody said that
with such limited knowledge available to us, i wonder if anne suffered from endometriosis or even polycystic ovarian syndrome? the fertility issues, her obesity (let's not just blame it on cakes) and descriptions of her being "grey and sickly" fits some of the symptomatology.
In her video on Queen Anne Lindsay Holiday actually talks about how modern forensic historians think she had Hughs Syndrome that thickened her blood. If this is true and she'd lived in modern times a daily aspirin regimen could have saved her and her children's lives.
@@bambalina12 yes, you're right about the previous video (i forgot about that!). it all comes back to autoimmune. :(

Thank you! 😃
My last name is from the border regions of England and Scotland. When it dawned on me that I could have a drop of Scottish in me, I was all, “Score!” Scotland is among my favorite countries in Europe
Anne is such a sad figure, all those losses would be indescribable. Any how thanks for the amazing 5 part series Lindsay, I learned so much and can’t wait for what’s next. 🌟🌹☺️
Wikipedia and a channel called History Calling list each of her children and what could've gone wrong. Anne Stuart most likely had antiphospholipid syndrome and sticky blood.
The woman was constantly pregnant
That is why all inbreeding should be illegal, it is on the increase in Britain due to immigration from muslims who marry their cousins and other relatives, this issue isnt dealt with due to the worry from the government that thwy will be accused of targeting a racial group
@@wendyHew, my Grandparents (white, english citizens) were first cousins. There's nothing wrong with any of us, and marrying your cousin is not illegal here - because the Dna crossover is negligible.
@@gillianrimmer7733 The problem comes when first cousins KEEP marrying. A first cousin marriage every now and then in a bloodline isn't too bad. But if it keeps happening, it eventually causes all sorts of problems.

Great finish to this series! I have some ideas for future topics:

I don’t recall if you have done a video on Cleopatra, if not it would be a great topic.

I did the same! Great series!
This is why I am an avid lover of history!!
I am hoping we can see a video about the consorts soon. This series was amazing!
Don't think so...
I know right. I have been asking her for one as well. However, since no records or very little do exist on the early consorts of Scotland, she may not be able to find much content for a multiseries video. She may do a three part series as the Consorts of the later dynasties are indeed recorded
Lindsay also mentioned the Macdonald family as one of the highlanders. Scottish actor David Tennant's real last name is Macdonald. It would be interesting if he actually descended from the highlanders who opposed their Scottish kings.
David did an episode of "Who do You Think You Are?" But I don't remember any of the details maybe look for it somewhere
This series was amazing. I have been living in Scotland for some time now and it’s good to connect what you said with various places I have visited ❤

The beginning of the epoch just as good as the end which we are now.
Thanks so much for this series it was very interesting❤
Also James was raised by his maternal illegitimate uncle and his uncle was actually regent for Scotland
Technically speaking William and Mary were not accepted by "the Scottish Parliament" as Parliament could not sit while there was no monarch. Instead James was ousted by a Convention of Estates without the fiction that he had abdicated.
Mary ll and Anne both tending toward same sex relationships is so coincidental that it’s funny lol. But poor Anne!!
I thought William was the gay one in that relationship 🤔
Isn't it the "King James" Bible and not the St. James Bible?
It's King James not St. James. Sometimes it's referred to as KJV

Maybe your next series like this can be on the rulers of Tibet? Tibet has a long and interesting history that is very underrated but definitely worth checking out. While Tibet is often stereotyped in the Western media as a peaceful Buddhist utopian paradise, it is little known that Tibet once ruled a Great Empire that sat right at the middle of the Silk Road and was a formidable rival to China's Tang Dynasty!
Wish I could afford to go, my husband's heritage is part Scottish
king james and the stuart dynasty..
were also kings of ireland & wales,
also lords of man & dukes of normandy
yeah he was separately king of Ireland, but Wales was part of the kingdom of England
I'm not sure if the Stuarts were Lords of Man as the island though a dependency of the English Crown was still ruled by a feudal lord until I think the 18th century

far more complicated...,
henry 8th never metioned he was a king of wales... as by the time of his death, it was polictically part of england..., but culturally seperate...
in comparison
ireland was a lordship, until henry VIII ,the 8th act of becoming the king of all of ireland, at least symbolically,,
unable to personally rule, so had a lord luteniant based in dublin castle,,, the *uncrowned king of ireland, often his distant cousin, the fitzgerald clan of kildare ...
henry 8th
de facto did not rule all of the island or ireland, as there were gaelic nobility and royalty...
so the tudor dynasty like previous plantagenet dynasty,
waged a war of conquest or occupation, with a system of former kings & galic clan chiefs.. becoming feudal vassals or *irish nobility, under the anglo norman crown... or enemies and rebels

Ngl James I is underrated for how terrible he was💀 He was truly one of the worst Kings in English History
Agreed, he was even worse in Scotland than in England.
@@LindsayHoliday He sure as hell is down there with King John, I sometimes find myself thinking he’s worse than John, but then think about the absolute failure of a tenure that was his (John’s) reign, and end up putting them at the same level

James VI of Scotland I of England, was so much worse than John.

Next series: *The Gorgeous Georgians!*
she already did that with the Hanoverian monarchs. This is the end of the kings/queens of Scotland series since under the house of Stuart, scotland was united into a real union with England
I am pretty sure that had the Scottish Parliament not voted to end Scotland's Independence and unite with England, the kingdom of Scotland would have one of the oldest in Europe today, having been established in 843 by the Alpin Dynasty and still going strong with the Windsor family. If Scotland had still remained a kingdom, the honors of Scotland would have been part of the actual Scottish coronation

Good video but the trip to scotland at the end seems to have a mistake on it, it says $3950.00? it must be an error as a trip to scotland with flights would generally cost $250.00. Wouldnt you be on a trip with loads of people you know you have ripped off? for 3950 you could travel to the majority of the countries in Europe, as I have done, I have never spent more than £400 pounds on a destination. In fact for that price you could go on an all expenses paid cruise round the whole of europe and north Africa
Fun Fact: People Of The English Church Wanted To Biring Back James, Because He Was Catholic. They Declared James II To Abdicate Because his Daughter Mary Wanted To Be Queen With William Prince Of Orange.
Wow and we think its way bad now in 2023!! I think back then it was worse
22:25 I’m confused why this is controversial. If the crowns ceased to be united, there would be no more legal connection between England and Scotland. Thus it would be natural that Scottish subjects would be treated as foreigners in England, just as English subjects would be foreign in Scotland
Anyway, on to conspiracy. 95% sure that Elizabeth II deliberately chose to pass away in Scotland. Balmoral was one of her favorite homes, and it allowed for a good degree of royal pomp and pageantry to take place in Scotland as opposed to all of it happening in London.
It's most likely because of the vast estates that Scottish lords have in England. If they were treated as aliens, their lands might easily be taken from them by England.
Macbeth Macfinley never murdered his cousin, he was killed by Vikings near Elgin.
Day five for asking for mother in laws of Henry viii!
Interestingly, James I tried to spare the irish rebels of the nine years war, only for the english to sabotage that, the irish fought, after charles i gave them concessions, for charles i, charles ii gave some land back to the irish and they would later fight for james ii
James the first I wonder how his red hair changed? I have relatives with red hair and I have known all of them for 60 years their red hair never went darker ?
in the last video you said you'd talk about the inspiration for the Red Wedding scene in Game of Thrones. did that get cut for time or did you just forget?
That was included in part 4, near the beginning.
Charles II was king once…he became king once his father was executed.
Why on earth was King James V of Scotland behind his first cousins Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I in the line of succession to the English throne? 🎭🩰🎨
Henry Vlll was the heir to Henry Vll, who had 3 children : Henry VIIl, Margaret, who married the King of Scotland, and Mary who married the King of France and Charles Brandon.
Mary and Elizabeth became Queens after their brother died because they were daughters of Henry Vlll.
When Henry's line ran out because they both died childless, the succession went to the the next eldest child of Henry Vll - which was Margaret Tudor, the grandmother of James V of Scotland.

@@kashfiaislam9995 , yes, which is why they came before her in the succession. When HenryVlll died he was followed by Edward, then Mary ,then Elizabeth - then because the line ran out of immediate heirs, it went back to Henry's elder sister, Margaret and her heirs.

It would have been the Scots language James VI tried to impose on the Gaels (not English on the highlanders)
And the Scots language is descended from Old English, the Northumbrian dialect.
@@British-Patriot old english is what the English call it in retrospect, Anglish or Anglo-saxon. it actually has more in common with proper germanic languages such as Scots and Dutch than English which is more French influenced
@@stuarthenderson8216
This only contributes to my point. The Angles influenced most of the areas in Scotland, and the Celtic mainland was replaced by the Germanics, while the Highlands were and still are truly Celtic. The Northumbrian dialect of Old English, whatever it is called to others, inhabited Northern areas, including Edinburgh. Also, most words in English that are spoken are mostly Germanic, the "French" influence is exaggerated.

It's so interesting to know that the British Royalty was full of gay, bi, and lesbian monarchs but the irony is that many think that there's no room for any Queer royal family members to survive! (As discussed in the movie and novel of the 'Red White & Royal Blue')
There’s a lot of enthusiasm for Scottish independence, given they lied to us in 2014. I wish they’d let us leave.

Scotland has never been a commonwealth of England. Iceland was part of Denmaark.
After the execution of Charles I and the defeat of Charles II the countries of the so-called British Isles were forcibly united into a state known as The Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland which was really a military dictatorship ruled from England occupying the other countries.
